While many will remember Rosamund Pike’s film debut in the James Bond movie Die Another Day, the English actress has revealed she denied an uncomfortable request during her audition. While Pike got her start in Hollywood as the Bond girl Miranda Frost in Pierce Brosnan’s final outing as the MI6 agent 007, this part opened the door to many more acclaimed roles and even an Oscar nomination for her performance in Gone Girl. From Pride and Prejudice to Saltburn, Pike's best movies showcase how exceptional her career has been since she first graced the big screen back in 2002.
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Pike reflected on the early days of her career and offered troubling insight into the requests put forward to young actresses hoping to get their start in the industry. Even at just 21 years old, Pike was self-assured enough to tell her Die Another Day casting team,...

Exclusive: BritBox International has become something of an unlikely savior of the UK drama industry of late amid the co-pro crisis and the streamer has now swooped in for one of the BBC’s biggest upcoming series.
BritBox is co-producing and has taken rights in the U.S. and Canada on The Other Bennet Sister from The Power co-creator Sarah Quintrell and Industry producer Bad Wolf, which is based on the book by ex-BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow.
With casting close to being unveiled, the show that is set to roll cameras shortly tells the story of Mary Bennet – the seemingly unremarkable and overlooked middle sister in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
Jane Tranter, who runs Bad Wolf, said “Georgian expert” Hadlow, a former BBC colleague, is “really good at looking around the edges of something in a creative and perceptive way.”

Following her critically acclaimed directorial debut Past Lives, filmmaker Celine Song returns with Materialists, an A24 romantic drama about love and class.
The plot
The film stars Dakota Johnson as a high-end matchmaker in New York who finds herself torn between her broke but loving ex (Chris Evans) and a wealthy, suave new suitor (Pedro Pascal).
A new trailer for the film was released on Thursday.
The backstory
Song, who wrote and directed the film, has cited classic novels such as Pride and Prejudice and Howards End as key inspirations. Like those literary works, Materialists explores the tension between romantic idealism and the social realities of wealth and marriage.
Johnson told the Associated Press that her character Lucy is at a crossroads in her life.

Every performer has hit a roadblock at some point in their career. There are many popular actors who bombed auditions for iconic roles and cringed as they recalled the stories later on. Spare a thought for someone like Nicholas Hoult who read for both Batman and Superman but didn't get either gig -- he ended up as Lex Luthor, though, so don't bring out the tissues for him just yet.
As fans, it's fun to look back at these casting stories, wondering what might have been had these performers secured coveted parts. Sure, some might have rocked the roles, while others would not have been right fits at all. No shade intended, but sometimes life happens for a very good reason. It's okay, because none of the actors mentioned below saw their careers end after bad auditions. Quite the opposite, really, as they all went on to achieve success in their craft.

Jane Austen is one of the best and most beloved (female) authors of all time. Her novels, which blended romance and drama with intelligent social satire, have become timeless classics that are beloved even today.
Among her novels, Pride and Prejudice is a very special one as it has inspired numerous authors and readers all over the world. We’ve had numerous adaptations, and Netflix is working on a new series inspired by the book right now.
In 2005, though, a theatrical adaptation by Joe Wright appeared. The movie, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, was a major hit at the time and it has recently been re-released in theaters.

Beating Netflix’s (entirely unnecessary) remake of “Pride and Prejudice,” the BBC’s spinoff “The Other Bennet Sister” and French rom-com “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” to the proverbial punch, the 250th birthday celebrations of arguably Britain’s most cherished novelist begins with a four-part drama focusing on her elder sister.
For many literary scholars, Cassandra Austen is a villainess of Miss Norris-esque proportions. After all, her deliberate burning of her sibling’s vast personal correspondence — only 160 of her approximately 3,000 letters are still intact — largely thwarted any attempt to further understand the famously elusive author. However, “Miss Austen,” itself based on Gill Hornby’s same-named piece of historical fiction, does its best to exonerate her reputation as a cultural vandal.
The BBC original certainly comes with an impressive period drama pedigree. Director Aisling Walsh won a BAFTA for her post-war miniseries “Room at the Top,” while leading lady Keeley Hawes...

In honor of the film's 20th Anniversary, Focus Features is re-releasing Ang Lee's 2005 film Brokeback Mountain. The movie features an impressive cast, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Williams, in a film that chronicles the intimate and heartbreaking relationship between two cowboys sent to work on the titular Brokeback Mountain. Taking place during the summer of 1963, Ang Lee's film was considered a bold film at the time of its release, and helped push the boundaries for queer narratives in film and television.
Brokeback Mountain's premise centers on Ennis Del Mar (Ledger) and Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal), with the two actors delivering awe-inspiring performances that set the tone for the film. Premiering at the Venice Film Festival in 2005, Brokeback Mountain was one of the few films that year to dominate awards buzz and conversations. Jane Austen adaptations are nothing new, and with 2025 being the 250th Anniversary of her birth, they have never been more relevant. Thankfully, the year also marks two decades since the theatrical debut of Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice, sending the movie back into theaters and putting eyes back on Austen's timeless romance tale. Now, thanks to this re-release, Pride & Prejudice's box office haul has hit a brand-new milestone, 20 years on from its first. Officially, Pride & Prejudice has now surpassed the $130 million mark, split between a $42 million domestic total and $88 million in overseas markets.
Pride & Prejudice has surpassed this milestone thanks to a consistent performance in domestic theaters following its initial re-release opening weekend, in which it earned over $2.8 million and finished eighth in the top ten earners. On Monday, April 21, and Tuesday, April 22, Pride & Prejudice earned just shy of $1 million in total, taking...

Netflix is bringing another classic novel adaptation to the screen. Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence, which was previously filmed by Martin Scorsese in 1993, is being adapted into a miniseries at the streamer. The news comes on the heels, coincidentally, of Miramax announcing plans to produce a series adaptation of Gangs of New York, another Scorsese film that, like The Age of Innocence, also starred Daniel Day-Lewis.
Netflix has tapped British screenwriter Emma Frost, a veteran of Shameless, The Spanish Princess, and The Man in the High Castle, to showrun the series. Frost is not to be confused with the Marvel Comics character of the same name, although she did write for The White Queen. It will attempt to stay true to the novel's original themes, while also bringing the novel to a new, younger audience. The series is the latest in Netflix's attempts to mine the literary canon for content.

It looks like our box office predictions for the weekend ended up coming true after all. In a surprise reversal, Sinners, which looked like it was going to have to settle for a second-place debut at the Easter box office, rallied thanks to performing stronger-than-expected on Saturday evening. As it stands, Ryan Coogler’s vampire pic will dominate the weekend box office, with a $45.6 million gross compared to A Minecraft Movie’s still potent $41 million (in its third weekend). Boasting an amazing A CinemaScore rating, word of mouth may well propel Sinners to a stateside finish north of $100 million. Notably, this is the first time a horror film has ever gotten such a strong rating, with only movies like A Quiet Place 1 & 2 managing anything north of a B in the last decade. However, it will likely be up to foreign gross to see if the film ultimately turns a profit...

Easter Sunday Am Writethru after Saturday Night post: It’s a win for original movies as Warner Bros’ Sinners has taken the lead at the Easter weekend box office with $45.6M per Warners over the studio’s A Minecraft Movie which is landing in second with $41.3M. Since 2000, this weekend reps the eighth time that Warner Bros has led the Easter weekend box office with an event title after 2010’s Clash of the Titans, 2016’s Batman v. Superman, 2018’s Ready Player One, 2019’s The Curse of La Llorona, 2021’s Godzilla v. Kong, 2022’s Fantastic Beasts 3, last year’s Godzilla x Kong and now Sinners. Let the record show that Warner Bros with both titles contributed 64% of the entire weekend’s box office. Among all Easter weekend openings, Sinners ranks 9th.
This comes after a better-than-expected Saturday of $16.5M for the Ryan Coogler directed, Michael B. Jordan starring vampire pic, down...

While Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is on the receiving end of great reviews (including our own) and word-of-mouth, it looks like our prediction that the film would over-index this weekend and beat A Minecraft Movie to take the top spot over Easter Weekend isn’t coming true. According to Deadline, Sinners is on track to gross $40 million, compared to A Minecraft Movie’s $45 million. It’s a rare double whammy for Warner Bros, who own the top spots this holiday weekend. That’s a huge turnaround given how dire their box office situation was just a month ago. Given that Sinners cost in the $100 million range, that’s a very decent start for a movie that should hopefully leg out to consistent business in the weeks ahead. However, it can’t be denied that with the rapturous critical reception, the opening might be a little underwhelming.

In the 2005 film adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” the central love story between Elizabeth and Darcy is set in motion during a ball. It’s a rowdy, exuberant scene full of carefree dancing and whispered observations about the other attendees.
That’s also director Joe Wright’s favorite scene. Not too long ago, Wright rewatched his debut feature, which Focus Features is bringing back to theaters this weekend in recognition of the film’s 20th anniversary. “The first ball, the community dance, I’m very proud of that scene. It has a kind of energy and a vitality and a messiness and joy,” Wright tells Variety.
In the scene, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) first spots Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) — “the person with the quizzical brow” —and then overhears him insulting her appearance. It’s also where viewers are introduced to Elizabeth as a young woman with sharp wit, who has a...

“Queer theory takes the joy out of being gay!” blurts Bowen Yang’s character Chris in one of several laugh-out-loud yet emotional moments in “The Wedding Banquet,” Korean American filmmaker Andrew Ahn’s fourth feature in just nine years. The official synopsis reads: “Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. ‘The Roses’ is a reimagining of the 1989 classic film The War of the Roses, based on the novel by Warren Adler.”

Vin Diesel is undeniably known for his role as Dominic "Dom" Toretto in the Fast and Furious franchise, but he has flirted with many other franchises, including XXX, The Chronicles of Riddick, and even the MCU. One of his recent projects that should've kicked off a new franchise is becoming a new hit on streaming.

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has been adapted for the small or big screen seemingly thousands of times. It is an easy crowd-pleaser, but the cast has to be just right. Of course, many actors have played Mr. Darcy, but few have been as iconic as Colin Firth's turn in 1995, for instance.

Elon’s three marriages and other relationships have made headlines. Musk also has a large brood of children, and he’s been open about why he’s decided to father many kids.

I have to disagree with Greek storyteller Aesop in his warning that it is possible to have too much of a good thing as someone who’s revelled in covering Sam Baron’s trilogy of Amit Shah tragicomedies. These were all written and directed by Baron so I was most intrigued to see what he would do when realising comedy veterans Harry Kershaw and Chris Leask’s script Office Royale. Think Battle Royale but within the walls of Peep Show with pangs of romance and it’s still funnier than you’re imagining. Working with an assembly of brilliant British actors and a trusted crew Baron doesn’t disappoint and brings this acerbic, biting script to life. As it premieres today on Dn, we chat about the daunting prospect of having so many characters to track at the same time, how he created a rough and ready aesthetic for the camerawork,...

What would movies be about if not for love? Since well before the days of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca,” romance has driven countless classic stories, setting up some of the highest highs in cinematic history to follow. Be it Cary Grant and Grace Kelly seeing stars in “To Catch a Thief” or Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal disturbing diner patrons in “When Harry Met Sally,” the 20th century was chock full of iconic romances that helped humanity fall in love with the movies. Of course, those titles were dominated by white artists telling largely heteronormative tales — meaning many (but not all) of the best and most inclusive romances have arrived this millennium.
Now, the best romance movies of the 21st century both resonate and surprise, showing audiences characters they might recognize from their own lives in new and surprising ways. Yes, finding “the one” is exceedingly well-frequented thematic territory,...

Persuasion (2022) has long been considered Jane Austen’s most mature and sad work. Its themes include regret, desire, and the prospect of second chances. Unlike Pride and Prejudice’s vibrant conversation and Emma’s humorous matchmaking, “Persuasion” is quiet and thoughtful. It follows Anne Elliot, a young lady persuaded to reject the guy she loves. Years later, when circumstances bring them back together, Anne must manage the difficult task of regaining what was lost.
This is a tale about time and the changes it brings—how it reshapes individuals, affects perspectives, and, if fate permits, gives another chance to fix what has been shattered. Anne Elliot and Captain Frederick Wentworth’s love is neither youthful, spontaneous, nor characterized by great romantic gestures. It is a love that has lasted through heartache, quiet, and the passage of time. It’s a narrative about patience, endurance, and the quiet power that comes...

The fourth and, supposedly final, entry in the Bridget Jones franchise, Mad About the Boy, now streaming on Peacock, is stuffed full of Easter eggs and callbacks to past movies in the Renée Zellweger-starring rom-com series.
From the blue cocktails Bridget enjoys with her friends after yet another painful dinner with many smug married couples to her red-and-white penguin pajamas, sheer top and short skirt and a memorable sweater, the fourth film features numerous reminders of Bridget’s past.
Director Michael Morris says the Easter eggs are an intentional form of fan service.
“There are more probably than you would ever see in the first run through,” the director told The Hollywood Reporter at the Mad About the Boy New York premiere last month. “You could say Easter eggs are fan service. What’s wrong with fan service? Those are people who have been with the franchise for 25 years.
