THE GREEN HORNET is a 1994 Hong Kong martial arts film shot in mainland China. It's a revamp of the 1960s US TV series, doing away with the American lead and focusing on the masked crime-fighter Kato, somewhat confusingly renamed as the titular character now. The Green Hornet fights various bad guys in martial arts bouts and also romances a woman at times.
It's pretty clear from watching this that the money ran dry in mid-'90s Hong Kong which is why this is very much a cheap and cheerful affair. Still, I ended up enjoy it mainly for the cast alone; certainly the slim plotting is nothing special and the fights are fun but quite average. Chin Kar Lok, an actor I best know for his performance in DRUNKEN MASTER II, is the masked crime fighter, Esther Kwan the annoying female lead. Rongguang Yu is reliably good as the local police chief and the great Lin Hui Huang, a former Shaw Brothers regular, is a decent villain. The film is directed by Lam Ching-Ying who also has a supporting role; sadly he was nearing the end of his too-short life at this time.
