Top German producer and longtime Constantin exec Martin Moszkowicz has revealed his concerns over “growing anti-Semitism’ in Germany and anger over the muted response from the country’s cultural scene in the wake of the October 7 Hamas terror attacks on Israel.
The Resident Evil producer broached the subject in a recent interview with Munich-based newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung to mark his upcoming departure as chairman of Constantin Film after 10 years in the role, and a total of 30 years at the company. Current Deputy Chairman Oliver Berben will take on the Chairman role from March 1, 2024.
Moszkowicz, whose film and theatre director father survived Auschwitz but lost most his immediate family in the Holocaust, said he had been “outraged” by the silence of the German culture sector in the immediate aftermath of the Hamas attacks, which killed at least 1,139 people, most of them Israeli civilians.

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

51 years ago today, on April 19th 1961, Federico Fellini's masterpiece "La Dolce Vita" arrived in U.S. theaters. The film was already a phenomenon; it had premiered in Italy the previous February, was instantly condemned by the Catholic Church (it was banned entirely in Spain until 1975), and won the Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1960. On its U.S. release, it was widely acclaimed by critics, became a huge box office hit, and picked up four Oscar nominations the following year, including director and screenplay, and won for costume design.

"[E]veryone I know absolutely despised Bertrand Bonello's House of Tolerance, set in a Parisian brothel ca. 1899-1900, whereas I found myself rather touched by the film's oddly idealized portrait of a defunct community," writes Mike D'Angelo at the Av Club. "Granted, there are risible moments — you can't make a movie in which a hideously disfigured prostitute cries tears of milky semen without inspiring a lot of wisecracks on Twitter. But Bonello's compassion for these women feels genuine, and I appreciated the deft way that he juxtaposed their various assignations with the practical, menial details of their trade, as well as his pointedly anachronistic use of music…. I make no great claims for House of Tolerance, but the degree of intolerance among my colleagues has me befuddled."

German movie mogul known for Downfall and The Baader Meinhof Complex
In 1977, Wim Wenders proclaimed: "Never before and in no other country have images and language been abused so unscrupulously as here [in Germany]. Nowhere else have people suffered such a loss of confidence in images of their own, their own stories and myths as we have." The film producer Bernd Eichinger, who has died of a heart attack aged 61, went further than most to bring back that confidence to German cinema.
Still suffering from the fatal legacy of nazism, German cinema emerged from the doldrums of the 50s and 60s into the next decade with directors such as Wenders, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Volker Schlöndorff. Eichinger dreamed of re-establishing the glory days of German cinema of the 1920s, when the world-renowned film company Ufa was both a commercial and artistic success. London, April 22 – Brooke Shield is happy that the photographer who clicked her nude picture of her as a child was not able to make out profit from it, calling his financial struggles “justice”.
The ‘Pretty Baby’ star posed nude for photographer Garry Gross as a pre-teen and alleges that he tried to make money by selling the picture when she turned 16.
“Everything that happened that felt sordid (about the shoot) happened after the fact. My kids walk around naked all the time, and I was nine – I wasn’t uncomfortable.

Schweiger became a star with the release of the social comedy Der Bewegte Mann (Maybe … Maybe Not in the U.S.) in 1994 and has managed a career that has encompassed high and low brow fare that has earned him critical kudos and popular success.

Constantin sure on 'Maybe'
Constantin Film is bringing the 1995 hit German comedy Maybe ... Maybe Not back to the big screen. The company will produce an English-language remake for Screen Gems.
Based on Ralph Konig's comics Der Bewegte Mann and Pretty Baby, the original film was directed by Sonke Wortmann and produced by Bernd Eichinger and was the highest-grossing German film of 1995.
The remake will be produced by Robert Kulzer for Constantin Film.
"I have wanted to make this movie since I saw the original," Screen Gems topper Clint Culpepper said. "Now I am finally getting the opportunity to, and it is very gratifying."
The story centers on a womanizer who is kicked out by his longtime girlfriend because of his habitual cheating. The only one who will take him in is an elderly gay man with whom he once worked. The womanizer soon realizes his girlfriend is the love of his life, and he enlists the help of his new roommate and his circle of gay friends to win her back.
