Guy Pearce Reveals Talks With Original Creative Team And Cast For ‘Priscilla Queen Of The Desert’ Sequel As He And Adrien Brody Receive Santa Barbara Film Festival Tribute
Image
We may be getting round 2 of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

In a wide-ranging career tribute and conversation Thursday night in front of a packed crowd at the 2000-seat Arlington Theatre ahead of their receiving the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s Cinema Vanguard Award, Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Guy Pearce, on stage with his The Brutalist co-star and Best Actor Oscar nominee Adrien Brody, made some news.

Moderating the evening, I saved a choice clip of one of Pearce’s memorable early performances as salty drag queen Felicia in 1994’s Australian hit comedy, The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert to run towards the end of the two-hour tribute, and then asked him what memories it brought back. To my surprise Pearce revealed he is in talks with original writer/director Stephan Elliott and co-stars Hugo Weaving and Terence Stamp about a possible sequel, saying...

Guy Pearce Says ‘I’m S–‘ in ‘Memento’ After Rewatching Christopher Nolan Thriller: ‘I Hate What I Did’
Image
Plenty of cinephiles think fondly of Guy Pearce’s turn as the amnesiac Leonard Shelby in “Memento,” but Pearce isn’t one of them.

The 57-year-old actor, who most recently picked up an Academy Award nomination for his supporting turn in Brady Corbet’s historical epic “The Brutalist,” spoke candidly about his performance in Christopher Nolan’s 2000 thriller “Memento” in an interview with The Times.

“I’m having an existential crisis,” Pearce admitted. “I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie. I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of ‘Memento’ earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again.”

“But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did,” he added. “And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again? It came crashing down.

Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) as Gold Derby reexamines the 10 best Guy Pearce movies, ranked.

Born in England on October 5, 1967, his family relocated to Australia when Pearce was 3 years old, and he became a competitive bodybuilder as a teen. His acting career began when he was cast in the Australian soap opera “Neighbours” in 1986.

Pearce’s breakout film role was as drag queen Felicia Jollygoodfellow in the surprise hit Australian film “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” in 1994; just three years later he found success in American films with the Oscar-nominated “L.A. Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert Star Provides Update On Sequel Film: "Slowly Getting Closer"
Image
Hugo Weaving has provided an update on The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 2. The original The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was directed by Stephan Elliot and released in 1994. It was a dark comedy road trip movie that chronicled the journey of a transgender woman and two drag performers who travel from place to place in order to perform as a cabaret act. The film's leading trio of actors included Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terrence Stamp. Earlier this year, a Priscilla, Queen of the Desert sequel movie was announced.

Speaking with Variety, Weaving provides an update on this sequel film. The actor mentioned that he had just recently been corresponding with director Elliot surrounding the film's progress, and has "another script to read" as a result. The script for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 2 has gone through multiple iterations, making for "five drafts" in total.

‘Slow Horses’ Star Hugo Weaving Confirms Season 6 Return, Teases ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ Sequel: ‘I’ve Read About Five Drafts’
Image
Speaking at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, Hugo Weaving revealed he will reprise his role as Frank Harkness in Season 6 of “Slow Horses,” returning to London in January for a two-and-a-half month shoot.

“Each season generally is a book, but also each season departs a little bit from those books,” Weaving said. “We’re getting to the point with ‘Slow Horses’ where the seasons are catching up to the amount of books that [Mick] Herron has written.”

The actor also provided an update on the developing sequel to 1994’s “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.” “I was texting the director [Stephan Elliott] this morning. I’ve got another script to read. I’ve read about five drafts,” Weaving said. “It’s slowly getting closer to perhaps happening next year. Still lots of things to finalize, but it’s looking promising.”

While Weaving is globally recognized for “The Matrix” franchise,...

Image
As of this writing this year’s five predicted Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor are Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”), Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”), Stanley Tucci (“Conclave”), and Denzel Washington (“Gladiator II“). 2025 Oscar Predictions: Best Costume Design
Image
If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2024 winner “Poor Things.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Costume Design.)

Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 Best Picture champs also won this award; the last to do so was “The Artist” in 2012.

Among the other double dippers was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,...

A Walk Through ‘MacArthur Park’: Jimmy Webb Tells the History of an Odd Pop Classic That Found New Life as the Musical Climax of ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’
Image
Here’s one cake that didn’t get left out too long in the rain: the eternal pop pastry that is “MacArthur Park.” The song’s epic length and unusual structure haven’t kept it from turning into a decades-spanning perennial, one that is just finding yet another new life as a result of its extensive use in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which scores a full-on movie-musical climax with actor-singer Richard Harris’ original 1968 version before switching to Donna Summer’s disco remake for the end credits.

Jimmy Webb is one of the indisputably greatest songwriters of all time, known for undying classics like “Wichita Lineman,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Galveston” and “Highwayman.” “MacArthur Park” is undoubtedly a more polarizing song than those others, but more music fans than not will break into a grin upon hearing the start of a seven-minute, suite-like epic that likens a failed romance to...

Guy Pearce on Getting Back Into Drag for Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Sequel
Image
Long before RuPauls Drag Race, there was The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The 1994 comedy became an instant crowd-pleaser, following two drag queens and a transgender woman (Terence Stamp) as they travel across the desert Outback to perform their eye-popping cabaret act. Years later, the film, written and directed by Stephan Elliott, would find its way to Broadway with a new title: Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical.

Now, buzz has been building about a potential sequel. If Hocus Pocus, Bad Boys, and Beverly Hills Cop can slip back into the limelight, why not Elliots iconic comedy? Pearce, who recently spoke to MovieWeb about his gripping new historical drama, The Convert, which just hit theaters and finds the actor playing an embattled minister in a 19th-century historical epic, took time to comment on Priscilla, noting:

I've got to be honest. I don't even know what to expect from it myself,...

The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert 2 Gets Progress Update From Guy Pearce
Image
Guy Pearce discusses the potential sequel to The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The cult classic film strongly showcased LGBTQ+ representation, highlighting unity and community. Despite a potential sequel in the works, Pearce ensures that the next trip with Adam, Bernadette, and Tick will honor the impact of the original.

Thirty years after his glamorously dressed, Abba-filled trek across the Australian outback ended, Guy Pearce addresses the status of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert's recently confirmed sequel. Helmed by Stephan Elliott and starring Pearce, Hugo Weaving, and Terrence Stamp, the comedy focuses on two drag queens and a transgender woman's journey across the outback to perform at an Alice Springs resort. Catty and sardonic, Pearce's Adam is often the loudest of the trio for better and worse, with the performer slyly using his mother's wealth to purchase the bus they christen Priscilla.

Netflix Shines Light On 1994 As Great Year For Film; What Got Left On Cutting Room Floor

Who says 1994 was a classic year for cinema? Netflix begins today to make that argument, curating a release of 17 films that turned 30 this year. The streamer has its list below. I have mine, and with the exception of the seminal Farrelly Brothers-directed Dumb & Dumber with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, and Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional, the film that stars Jean Reno and a sinister Gary Oldman and introduced the world to the outsized talent Natalie Portman, and maybe Ron Howard’s The Paper, there’s a lot missing. How about Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Clear and Present Danger, Sicario, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Interview With the Vampire, Speed, Ed Wood, and the other two films in a starmaking year for Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. Juilliard’s Prestigious Mfa Drama Division Goes Tuition-Free With Major Gifts From Broadway Producers
Image
The elite and prestitious graduate acting program of New York’s The Julliard School will go tuition-free beginning this fall, a massive shift in the economics of arts schooling and student opportunities.

The school announced the move today, explaining that the four-year masters program, which currently costs each student about $53,300 per year, will eliminate the tuition after having raised $15 million including key gifts from Broadway theater producers Stephanie P. McClelland and John Gore.

The fourth year of the four-year program has always been tuition free in order for the school to compete with the many three-year arts schools, but the switch to entirely tuition-free is a major change in the world of elite arts education.

In a statement, the school said this morning, “Today we announced that the Drama Division’s Mfa in Acting will join Julliard’s growing list of tuition-free programs. Beginning in fall of 2024, all four years...

2024 Oscars: Best Costume Design Predictions
Image
If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)

By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 73 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,” 2019 winner “Black Panther” and its...

Image
With “Dancing with the Stars” set to come back for a 32nd season this fall on ABC after spending last year on Disney+, there’s a long list of celebrities who deserve to compete on the dance floor. Two of my previous suggestions came true: Frankie Muniz (who came in third in season 25) and Kel Mitchell (who came in second in season 28). Below is a list of female stars I think the show should consider inviting to the ballroom to vie for the next Mirror Ball Trophy. Do you agree with my picks? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see on “DWTS.” And feel free to let us know in the comments what other stars you would like to see when the show comes back in September.

Husslup Launches Initiatives To Support Writers During Strikes
Image
Husslup, the talent discovery platform founded by industry executive and producer exec H Schuster, has established a number of initiatives designed to help writers and freelance creatives during the writers and actors strikes.

These include script development workshops, a trans creatives working group and a new AI hiring tool.

The Hussulp Script Development Workshops will help diverse writers develop spec scripts. Launching in September, it will see actors read the scripts to a small audience of members who will provide feedback. The first two scripts that will be read are Quick, Quick, Slow, a queer, two-step romantic comedy in the vein of Footloose-meets-Priscilla Queen of the Desert, by Jett Garrison and The Big Coconut, a feature by Mexican-American writer Randy Gordon-Gatica.

The readings will be executive produced by Samantha Sprecher, who spent 20 years at Billy Crystal’s production company and produced Jennifer Esposito’s debut feature Fresh Kills,...

What's Coming to Pluto TV in June: 'Shaq's Garage, 'Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,' 'Kinky Boots'
Image
This month, free streaming service Pluto TV will premiere the new kids’ animated series “Shaq’s Garage.” The show focuses on the secret adventures of basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal’s extraordinary collection of cars, trucks, and other unique vehicles, known as the Shaq Pack. The show will debut on June 5.

The 1994 Australian road comedy “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” was eye-opening at its debut. The movie centers on two drag queens and a transgender woman crossing the Outback en route to a nightclub performance. Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terence Stamp star in the comedy that helped introduce LGBTQ themes to a mainstream audience. The film arrives on the service on June 1.

Interestingly, it’s just one of three movies coming to Pluto in June that led to a stage musical adaptation. In addition to “Priscilla” is the British comedy “Kinky Boots.” That film’s musical version won...

“The Deb,” according to the official synopsis, tells the story of “lovable farm-girl and high school outcast Taylah Simpkins, who is certain the upcoming Debutante Ball, ‘the Deb,’ is her one chance to redefine herself. When her cynical city cousin Maeve is exiled to Taylah’s drought-stricken town Dunburn, she thinks the ball is a ‘heteronormative shit-show’ and immediately disrupts the status quo. In their search for the spotlight, Taylah and Maeve dig deep to find self-acceptance — and a date to the Deb.”

For Gaten Matarazzo, Things Couldn’t Get Much Stranger Than A Smash Broadway Show, Ecstatic Reviews And Getting The Last, Bloody Laugh In ‘Sweeney Todd’ – Deadline Q&a
Image
At 20 years old, Gaten Matarazzo is already something of a Broadway veteran. The New Jersey native was only 9 when he made his debut in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, a few years older when he appeared in Les Misérables and then, just last year, took over the role of “Jared Kleinman” in the final Broadway cast of the hit musical Dear Evan Hansen.

Still, even theatergoers who had followed his career from the beginning couldn’t help but be caught off guard by his performance in Tony Award–winning director Thomas Kail’s current revival of the Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler dark, funny and musically lush classic Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. As the young orphan Tobias, Matarazzo is on stage for about 25 minutes of the musical’s just-shy-of-three-hour running time, and even alongside Broadway heavyweights Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, the Stranger Things star more than holds his own.

Guy Pearce Apologizes for Questioning Trans Casting: It Was ‘Insensitive’
Image
Guy Pearce is taking a moment to reflect.

The “Memento” actor issued an apology after tweeting about casting non-queer actors to portray queer characters, particularly with transgender roles.

“A question – if the only people allowed to play trans characters r trans folk, then r we also suggesting the only people trans folk can play r trans characters?” Pearce said in the since-deleted post. “Surely that will limit ur career as an actor? Isn’t the point of an actor to be able play anyone outside ur own world?”

Pearce’s own breakout role came by playing a drag queen in 1994 film “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.”

The “Mare of Easttown” star responded to fans on Twitter in since-deleted posts, adding (via MovieMaker magazine), “Ok, so if this debate is actually about Trans actors not getting the opportunities to work like other actors do then let’s be...

Guy Pearce Apologizes for Questioning the Roles Trans Actors Can Play: ‘I Understand How It’s Insensitive’
Image
Guy Pearce issued a lengthy apology statement on Twitter after he generated backlash for a controversial statement on transgender actors. In a since-deleted tweet, the “Memento” and “Mare of Easttown” actor mused about the roles trans actors can play.

“A question — if the only people allowed to play trans characters are trans folk, then are we also suggesting the only people trans folk can play are trans characters?” Pearce wrote. “Surely that will limit your career as an actor? Isn’t the point of an actor to be able play anyone outside your own world?”

While apologizing for “crassly focusing” on an “already-harassed minority,” Pearce also wrote: “I see that raising the question of gender identity within the casting process on a platform like Twitter was not a good idea. For that, I apologize, enormously. I acknowledge it has only stirred up and inflamed attitudes and made us all dig our heels in.

‘Seriously Red’ Review: Krew Boylan Gives a Star-Making Turn as a Woman Who Finds Herself While Impersonating Dolly Parton
Image
A spiritual kissing cousin of such compellingly campy ’90s Aussie-produced extravaganzas as “Strictly Ballroom” and “Muriel’s Wedding,” director Gracie Otto’s “Seriously Red” disarms and delights as a sensationally spirited concoction that neatly balances unfettered outrageousness and unabashed sentimentality. The beating heart of the entire enterprise is Krew Boylan. As screenwriter, she has created a terrific role for herself. As star, she proves absolutely fearless while illuminating every aspect of a sometimes exhilarating, sometimes exasperating, always endearing protagonist. She works a singularly impressive type of movie magic while simultaneously driving the movie over the top and anchoring the borderline-fantastical narrative in something resembling reality.

Boylan stars as Raylene Delaney, better known as Red, a socially awkward small-town New South Wales realtor with, as she herself admits, “an impulse control problem.” To put it mildly. A fanatically passionate fan of Dolly Parton, she decks herself out as her idol for a company gathering,...
