To quote Space Ghost himself, "I'll be dead long before you were born, and I'll be dead long before you'll be dead."
In 1994, producer Mike Lazzo donned a pith helmet, filled his arms with machetes, and trekked into the darkest corners of the bleak, terrifying Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. In the depths, he re-discovered a long-forgotten, one-season animated series from 1966 called "Space Ghost," a superhero show about a white-clad, cape-wearing starship captain who fought bud-like villains in the inky void of the cosmos. Space Ghost, voiced by Gary Owens, could pass through walls and oversaw a pair of sidekicks named Jan (Ginny Tyler) and Jace (Tim Matheson) as well as a chimp named Blip (Don Messick).
Like most of Hanna-Barbera's output, "Space Ghost" was strange and awful. 20 years later, reruns of shows like "Space Ghost" were increasingly enjoyed exclusively by college students under the influence of potent smokables. One would be...

"Toonami" debuted on the Cartoon Network in 1997, back when the network was just hitting its stride. Cartoon Network debuted in 1992, and originally offered mostly old animated reruns. It was, for years, the best place to find old Droopy cartoons, as well as Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry cartoons, old DC superhero fare, and reruns of Hanna-Barbera trash like "Scooby-Doo" and "The Flintstones."
In 1994, the network had the brilliant idea to repurpose a largely forgotten Hanna-Barbera character named Space Ghost, transforming him into a talk show host. "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" set a new dadaist tone for the Cartoon Network, proving that it could make hip, self-aware, original content in addition to its blocks of reruns. In 1996 and 1997, Cartoon Network launched a quartet of new shows -- "Dexter's Laboratory," "Johnny Bravo," "The Powerpuff Girls," and "Cow and Chicken" -- and their reputation was solidified. It was now a destination station.

Nobody does April Fools’ Day better than Adult Swim. For the past 20 years, the network has made it an annual mission to keep the prankish spirit of the jester-based day alive by throwing its viewers a curveball. Be it absurd gags, silly gimmicks, and sometimes grade-a shocking game-changers, April Fools’ Day is a colossal event for Adult Swim that every adult animation fan can’t miss.
Here are a few of the channel’s best April Fools’ Day moments from the past two decades.
2004 – Mustaches
Let’s go back to the prank that started it all—mustaches! It was just a night of regular adult animated programming, but with mustaches drawn onto all the characters in every scene in every show. It is such a simplistic gag, yet it birthed the tradition.

Prior to the debut of "The Powerpuff Girls" in 1998, show creator Craig McCracken had directed a series of tasteless cartoon shorts starring a character named No-Neck Joe. No-Neck Joe appeared regularly at the celebrated annual Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, cementing McCracken's underground credentials. The Powerpuff Girls first came into McCracken's repertoire as early as 1992, back when they were called the Whoopass Girls. The juxtaposition between the characters' creepy, ultra-cute, Margaret Keane-like faces and their ultra-violent behavior was the stuff of comedy legend, and McCracken kept the Girls in his back pocket for years.
Throughout the 1990s, McCracken rose in the ranks of the animation world, landing gigs on shows like "2 Stupid Dogs," "Dumb and Dumber," and, most notably, Genndy Tartakovsky's seminal series 1996 "Dexter's Laboratory." McCracken directed many episodes of the show. "Dexter's Laboratory" was one of four new series launched by the Cartoon Network...

Created by Sean Akins and Jason DeMarco, Toonami is a late-night programming block that helped introduce Japanese animated series to audiences in the West. First launched in 1997 on Cartoon Network, the block continues to this day on Adult Swim and is responsible for expanding the animated palate of multiple generations, myself included. Originally, Toonami was hosted by Moltar, a former supervillain from the 1966 animated series "Space Ghost" (not to be confused with "Space Ghost Coast to Coast"), but was replaced three years later by Tom (short for Toonami Operations Module). Tom wasn't just a host; he also came with his own lore and storyline from episode to episode, similar to the way the robots on "Mystery Science Theater 3000" also have backstories and character arcs.
Tom was a way to usher in a new era of Toonami, kicking off his transmission with an episode of "Sailor Moon R." Fans loved Tom,...

What should be an absolute no-brainer hit at the box office is at risk of being scrapped for a tax write-off despite positive test screenings, the result of yet another frustrating corporate decision prioritizing capitalism over creativity, and an all-out attack on the art of filmmaking.

Some of the most underrated Cartoon Network TV shows elicited laughs from generations of children and even adults. Just like Disney and Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network has made several animated TV shows that left a significant impact on the young demographics since its 1992 debut. Shows like The Moxy Show, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Johnny Bravo, Mike, Lu & Og, and Dexter’s Laboratory solidified the network’s reputation in the market in the 1990s. At the same time, several more were made over the next decades. At some point, these shows were considered spectacular hits among younger audiences and still evoke...

Wrapped Up: The Complete Collection compiles every adventure of Milo Mummy and friends in one book and is now available from Oni Press! In our latest Q&a, I caught up with Wrapped Up creators Dave Scheidt and Scoot McMahon, who reflected on the origins of the story, creating Wrapped Up's eclectic mix of characters, and what's next for the two of them:
For those who may be unfamiliar with Wrapped Up, can you tell our readers how you two first came together and started working on this comic book?
Scoot: Dave and I had worked on a short story for Art Baltazar and Franco's Aw Yeah Comics and wanted to work with each other again on something original.
Dave: Yeah, I really just admired Scoot’s work from a distance and we eventually became friendly and ended up working on a short story and now he’s stuck with me.

Comedian Judy Tenuta, who was known to fans as “The Love Goddess” and “Aphrodite of the Accordion,” died on Thursday in her home in Studio City, Calif. She was 72.
Named after Judy Garland, Tenuta attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she majored in theater. Her interest in comedy began when she took an improv comedy class with Chicago’s The Second City, shortly after which she began opening for other comedians throughout the 1970s.

Judy Tenuta, the quirky comedian known for playing the accordion and for her colorful characters, died Thursday at her home in Studio City, California, of ovarian cancer, according to her publicist. She was 72.
She had been battling stage 4 ovarian cancer as she detailed in her video “Judy Tenuta Kicks Cancer’s Ass,” which was shot at her home during the pandemic.
Tenuta was born on Nov. 7, 1949, in Oak Park, Illinois, where she grew up in a staunchly Irish Catholic neighborhood. She attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she majored in theater. Her interest in comedy took hold when she took an improv comedy class with the famed Chicago group The Second City, and she began opening for other comedians.

HBO Max and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav can't seem to keep their names out of the headlines recently, tied exclusively to baffling business decisions like canning the highly-anticipated release of "Batgirl" or absolutely obliterating the streaming platform's animated offerings. Zaslav made it known during the Q2 earnings call that he had hoped to cut 3 billion from HBO Max's operating budget before the inevitable streaming merger with discovery+, which apparently meant annihilating the relationships HBO Max had with Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network.
Learning that your life's work is being wiped out with complete disregard for the artistry or the lives of those that crafted it is difficult enough, but as "Infinity Train" creator Owen Dennis shared, Zaslav and the Discovery team couldn't even have the common courtesy to inform the creators of their decision to throw away their years of work like expired takeout. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: Who is an underrated TV superhero that deserves more respect/attention? (Old and current shows are fair game.)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
This is tough because my outlet puts a premium on superheroes, so really none are overlooked as far as we’re concerned. However, I haven’t seen as much general love for “Black Lightning” as the show deserves. Maybe people are burned out by the deluge of Dctv, much of which is past its prime, though others are exceptionally innovative and increasingly great (“Legends of Tomorrow”). But “Black Lightning” provides something that we aren’t seeing elsewhere in superhero series. As we reported yesterday, Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Aqua Teen Hunger Force voice actor and animator C. Martin Croker passed away on Sunday at age 54. Now Adult Swim has decided to honor his memory in the best way they know how. The broadcaster announced on Twitter that they have posted virtually every episode of Space Ghost online and without the normal pay log in. This is great news for anyone who ever loved the show as well as those who have yet to discover it. This is an extra special treat considering DVDs for the series are out of print and hard to come by. To check them out, click on this link. Zorak and Moltar would have wanted it that way.

He was 54. Born in Atlanta in 1962, Croker began working for the Turner Broadcasting System family of television networks in the early 1990s, animating several of TNT network’s “TNT Toons”…...

Space Ghost is getting his own Funko Pop this summer! There's no exact release date other than sometime this coming season, but I'm for sure picking this one up. I was never too big a fan of the original show, but I do love me some Space Ghost Coast To Coast! Ideally, if they did an exclusive one where Space Ghost was holding a coffee mug, I would prefer that more! Can we get a Brak, Zorak, and Moltar as well?...

I tuned into Cartoon Network's Adult Swim (Ok, [adult swim]) here and there when I was growing up, but since I was always busy watching movies, I never became a devotee who kept the channel on all night and dove into their entire catalogue of shows. I remember when it first started with Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and I've had Too Many Cooks stuck in my head since that debuted back in 2014. YouTuber kaptainkristian has put together a great documentary that looks at the fascinating history of [adult swim], breaking down its origins and detailing its impact on comedy, music, and the TV landscape. It'll be a cool trip down memory lane for some of you, and an eye-opening education for others. Check it out.

There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. These days, cartoons for grown-ups are not only ubiquitous, but hilariously twisted and high-quality to boot — and that's due in large part to a phenomenon called Adult Swim. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's...

They conceive the characters, write or co-write the scripts, set the pace and provide the vision for the TV programs you know and love. They're called showrunners, and they are the designated auteurs of the boob-tube renaissance still in progress. Writer-producers such as Joss Whedon, Shonda Rhimes, Matthew Weiner, Vince Gilligan, and the holy trinity of Davids — Chase, Milch and Simon — have earned profile pieces and graced magazine covers, becoming celebrities in their own right. They are to modern television what film directors were to the New Hollywood of the...

When people are asked to name great animated comedies the likes of South Park and Family Guy are usually at the top of the list. And every time that happens, I shed a tear (I'm an emotional man). Not because I dislike those shows (in fact, quite the opposite), but because Archer never seems to be among the top three named. Despite being created by Adam Reed (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021), Archer is often overlooked by many. But we're going to change that status right here, right now (time zones be damned!). Hear me, Internet, Archer is a show worthy of your time and affection! Don't believe us? Here's 11 reasons why you should watch Archer.
Also, don't forget to watch the comedy's return January 19th on FX.

The above embedded video is more of a TV trailer than a film trailer, but it’s all hilarious. Mike Salva‘s Pound Dogs follows the minimalist adventures of dogs locked up at the local pound, desperately waiting to be adopted. To relieve the boredom, they resort to fun dog activities such as rubbing one’s butt along the floor, wearing sombreros and confessing their love of eating cat poop.
Salva has animated a 13-minute pilot episode for a potential series for Pound Dogs. The short film features the voice work of comedians Ryan Williams and Sean Parrott; cartoon voice actors Andy Merrill (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and Samantha Newark (Jem); and singer/music producer/filmmaker Steve Taylor.
Pound Dogs, the full short, will be screening at the upcoming NY Television Festival on Wed., Sep. 21 at 6:15 p.m. and Fri., Sep. 23 at 9:00 p.

Former professional wrestler, actor and voice actor, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, whose legal name is Randy Mario Poffo died in a car crash Friday in Florida at the age of 58. Police said he may have suffered a “medical event” before the accident.
Before Stone Cold said so, before you smelled what The Rock was cookin’, professional wrestling greats like Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage graced the squared circle. The latter became equally synonymous with pro wrestling as the aforementioned Hulkamaniac in the 1980s, with his trademark sunglasses, flashy fringed robes and jackets and matching cowboy hats.
“Macho Man” Randy Savage was known for his raspy voice uttering his catch phrase “Ooh yeah!” at every turn. Later, Savage went on to become the spokesman for Slim Jim snack foods in the mid-to-late 90s, appending “Snap into a Slim Jim” to his already known catch phrase, “Oooh yeah!“. Despite many new marketing campaigns since then,...

Adult Swim, which is typically written this way, [adult swim], to give personality to the title, is part of Cartoon Network. It’s primarily dedicated to animated TV shows that are for adults and not for kids. That’s not to say that the content is obscene necessarily, but the humor is directed to a more sophisticated audience. By making use of innovative DVD publishing technology, Adult Swim brings its consumers Adult Swim Shop (adultswimshop.com) for manufactured on demand DVD purchasing. Now all the zany and sometimes demented cartoons that are on or have been on adult are available to customers through Adult Swim Shop. There are a few non-cartoon titles.
Some of the titles that Adult Swim Shop offers are: Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Brak Show, Frisky Dingo, 12 oz. Mouse, Harvey Birdman, Metalocalypse, The Mighty Boosh, Moral Orel, Robot Chicken, Sealab 2021, Space Ghost and Space Ghost Coast To Coast.

Maybe the seemingly haphazard collection of shows in the 12-disc Adult Swim in a Box is designed as a profound statement about the perceived randomness of life. Or maybe the people who put it together were just as high as the Williams Street crew behind Aqua Teen Hunger Force must be nowadays to be churning out the increasingly stranger seasons of their show. Maybe it just has more to do with what Adult Swim in a Box reads as if one flips around the top of the paper case in which it comes – “Cash Grab in a Box.” The collection is simply a paper sleeve, no extra frills, containing the retail box sets of six of the programming’s series – Sealab 2021 (Season 2), Metalocalypse (Season 1), Robot Chicken (Season 2), Space Ghost Coast to Coast (Season 3), Moral Orel (Season 1) and Aqua Team Hunger Force (Volume 2) ...

Breathed was dismissive of the idea, claiming that no one wanted to read the strip, that it was no longer relevant, and it just wasn’t going to happen. Well, a few years have gone by,...

The new Adult Swim In A Box is an embarrassment of riches - six boxed sets for six different shows and a bonus disc featuring five unreleased pilots -- more than 20 hours on 12 DVDs. I was especially happy to get season two of Sealab 2021, which I have never been able to catch regularly, and season one of Metalocalypse, which I have always enjoyed.
Getting season two of Robot Chicken, volume one of Moral Orel, volume two of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and volume three of Space Ghost Coast to Coast just seemed like a bonus. Well worth the suggested retail price of $69.98 for Adult Swim fans who haven't already purchased any of the included sets.
The pilots are a mixed bag, but mostly good. The Best of Totally for Teens is a live action parody of a moralistic teen variety show hosted by thirtysomethings trying to be hip. It's a promising premise,...

Midway Games announced Tuesday that it has signed a multiterritory agreement with Cartoon Network to publish video games based on five of the network's Adult Swim programs and three of its top-rated children's programs. Under the terms of the deals, which went through Cartoon Network's sibling company Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Midway secures multiterritory rights to develop and publish games for the console, hand-held and PC platforms. Adult Swim is the network's late-night programming block of animation that targets on an older -- if not necessarily mature -- audience. The shows included in the Midway deal are: Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Brak Show, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Sealab 2021 and Space Ghost Coast to Coast.
