The Upfronts: How TV’s Big Week Evolved From Chess Match to WWE Free For All
Image
The TV upfronts have a long and colorful history, rooted in grainy images of network executives strategically moving shows around an oversized scheduling board, trying to parry moves by other programmers in the equivalent of a high-stakes chess match.

Today, the strategy is less a cerebral cat-and-mouse game of positioning those pieces than a WWE-style free for all, where programmers try to assemble cohesive lineups but can’t begin to plan how to counter competition that’s coming at them on a multitude of fronts.

Billions of dollars in advance commitments still hang in the balance, with networks and now streaming services seeking to impress media buyers and garner their share of the advertising pie. While sellers still dress to impress, from flying in talent to hosting parties, the Trump economy has cast a shroud over this year’s festivities, stoking fears companies will cut back on spending amid looming recession anxiety.

15 Best Medical Shows Of All Time, Ranked
Image
In its eight decades of existence as a medium, scripted television has been mediated by certain bedrock genres. There's the family-centric soap opera, the crime drama, the workplace sitcom ... and there is, of course, the medical show, which has proven in those decades to have virtually inexhaustible appeal for both comedy and drama.

With a good team of storytellers and a strong cast of actors in tow, the sky's the limit to what depths of feeling and engagement can be drawn from the experiences of medical professionals and their daily efforts to care and do no harm — and TV, with its structural affinity for individual "cases," may just be the ideal medium to mine those depths.

To prove it, we've compiled a ranking of the 15 greatest medical shows of all time. Because this is a universal genre pretty much wherever there are TV studios and networks, the list's only rule...

Why Lauren Holly's Jenny Shepard Left NCIS
Image
Lauren Holly's "NCIS" character, Jenny Shepard, played a considerable role in the CBS procedural juggernaut from season 3 to season 5. From 2005 to 2007, the erstwhile Naval Criminal Investigative Service director loomed over Leroy Jethro Gibbs' (Mark Harmon) Major Case Response Team during some of its most fascinating and dangerous investigations. It's saying something that her debut episode is the two-part season 3 opener "Kill Ari," which finally ends the team's clash with Rudolf Martin's Ari Haswari, who just might be the most devious antagonist in the show's history.

The role of the NCIS director is extremely important for the series, and Shepard's determination, personal issues, and romantic history with Gibbs make for an extremely memorable boss figure. Unfortunately for fans of her character, Holly ended up leaving the show in a fairly definite fashion in "NCIS" season 5, episode 18 -- titled "Judgment Day (Part I)" -- when the terminally ill Shepard...

41 Times TV Killed Off a Series Regular and Left Us Speechless
Image
The 2024–25 TV season isn’t even over yet, but the carcasses of beloved characters already lie scattered across the landscape.

A device as old as television itself, character deaths happen when actors want to move on (or are forced to), or when a stale story needs a jolt of life.

Sometimes, we go seasons without a significant death on any of our favorite shows. Other times, we can barely catch our breath before we’re saying goodbye to someone else.

So far this season, Kevin Costner’s forced exit from Yellowstone led to John Dutton’s ignoble death, one that left many believing he took his own life.

The ‘Criminal Minds’ Actor Who Hated Starring in the Show That Destroyed His Soul: ‘I didn’t think I would get to work again’
Image
After spending years on the medical drama Chicago Hope, Mandy Patinkin’s next major role in TV was as Ssa Jason Gideon in Criminal Minds. He joined the series in its pilot episode and lasted only two seasons before announcing his exit. The show went on for another 13 seasons, followed by two seasons of its revival show, Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Patinkin’s character was replaced by Ssa David Rossi, played by The Godfather III fame Joe Mantegna. Gideon left the Bau team at the end of Season 3, Episode 2, after his girlfriend was killed by the serial killer Frank Breitkopf. While Gideon had his reasons to leave the Bau, Patinkin also had reasons to leave Criminal Minds.

Later, Gideon was addressed in a major way only in the tenth season of the show when a serial killer from his past murdered the legendary Ssa agent.

Every Diehard NCIS Fan Needs to Watch This 6 Season Series Starring Mark Harmon in His Most Criminally Underrated Role
Image
Any NCIS fan can easily attest to the fact that nobody else could have played Leroy Gibbs as brilliantly as actor Mark Harmon. For nearly two decades he was the face of the hit crime procedural drama and became one of the most beloved characters on CBS Network.

But even before he stepped into the shoes of Gibbs, he was already a well-established actor in the industry with several projects to his name. And apart from his NCIS role, there was another show in which his acting chops are equally remarkable.

Long before he got on board NCIS in 2003, he was a part of medical drama Chicago Hope as Dr. Jack McNeil.

Why Mandy Patinkin's Jason Gideon Left Criminal Minds
Image
While each major broadcast network has procedural dramas, CBS is the king of the format, at least in the 21st century. It's mastered the art form of the procedural, specifically focused on crimes of all kind. The "NCIS" franchise alone has spawned a handful of series, each of them taking place in the United States and abroad going as far back as 2003.

But CBS is no stranger to other long-running procedural crime dramas, including the darker and no less famous "Criminal Minds." When "Criminal Minds" began airing in the fall of 2005, it boasted a unique hook, focusing on the profilers of a specific unit of the FBI and the very grim cases that they would have to solve all across the country. The show has lasted in some form for two decades, although what was once a full-season drama airing on CBS is now a streaming reboot series titled "Criminal Minds: Evolution" on Paramount+.

Isabella Rossellini
Isabella Rossellini Joins Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Beauty’ (Exclusive)
Isabella Rossellini
Isabella Rossellini has joined Ryan Murphy’s upcoming FX series “The Beauty” in a recurring guest star role, Variety has learned.

The “Blue Velvet” star and “Conclave” Oscar nominee joins previously announced series leads Evan Peters, Ashton Kutcher, Anthony Ramos, Jeremy Pope and Rebecca Hall.

FX and 20th Century Television declined to comment. A representative for Murphy could not be immediately reached for comment.

“The Beauty,” from co-creators Murphy and Matthew Hodgson, was given an 11-episode order from FX. The series, which is currently in production, is based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley. While character and plot details are being kept under wraps, a description of the comic series reads as follows:

“Modern society is obsessed with outward beauty. What if there was a way to guarantee you could become more and more beautiful every day? What if it was a sexually transmitted disease?...

The Pitt Season 1, Episode 7 Review: The Most Controversial Episode Yet
Image
The following contains major spoiilers from The Pitt Season 1, Episode 7, "1:00 P.M.," now streaming on Max. It also contains references to sexual abuse, abortion and pregnancy loss.

The Pitt Season 1, Episode 7, "1:00 P.M." is essentially the midpoint of the 15-episode season, and so it's appropriate that the Max drama comes roaring out of the gates. With arguments and controversies around nearly every corner, this is the episode that will make some people fans of the show, and will turn other fans off entirely. Everyone's mileage will vary depending on their personal opinions on each topic -- and how much they're willing to take.

"1:00 P.M." doesn't introduce many new patients, because the existing ones have enough problems. The teenager seeking an abortion is still locked in the ER's bathroom, while there's a shocking reveal about the patient who just fell off a ladder. Meanwhile, one main character gets the worst possible news.

Why Cote De Pablo's Ziva David Left NCIS
Image
The hour-long procedural has long been one of network television's go-to genres. When done effectively, they can last for decades and launch multiple spin-offs that make a gazillion dollars for creatives and suits alike. What's the secret to the crafting of a long-running procedural? In the case of the broadcast war horse known as "Law & Order," it's to hit on a unique narrative format (i.e. the criminal justice system viewed from the street and court levels), and hit big on every casting choice. For shows as unabashedly formulaic as CBS' "NCIS," it's good enough to hit big-ish on every casting choice, and get slotted into a favorable spot on the broadcast schedule.

Initially, Mark Harmon's Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs was the anchor of the series. The sun-kissed California hunk with sandy hair and blue eyes got his start on television as Dr. Robert Caldwell on "St. Elsewhere...

Actors Who Were Considered To Play NCIS' Gibbs Before Mark Harmon
Image
In hindsight, it's impossible to imagine anyone but Mark Harmon in the role of gruff "NCIS" boss Leroy Jethro Gibbs. It wasn't exactly a career-reigniting role for the actor, who had already built a legacy on shows like "St. Elsewhere" and "Chicago Hope" before joining the CBS military police procedural's inaugural 2003 season. However, it soon became apparent that Gibbs would be his defining role. Harmon embodied the character in a way that made him the unquestionable centerpiece of the ensemble cast throughout his 19 seasons with the show. He left "NCIS" in 2021, but Gibbs perseveres: In 2024, CBS rolled out the prequel show "NCIS: Origins," with Austin Stowell playing young Gibbs while Harmon narrates, "Young Sheldon"-style.

Knowing Harmon's importance to the "NCIS" franchise, it may be surprising to find out that the people behind the show didn't call his agent the second they conceived the character of Gibbs. In 2023, the makers...

What Happened To The Cast Of The 1978 TV Show Dallas?
Image
Long before the Roys of New York or the Sopranos of New Jersey, one family dominated television: the Ewings of "Dallas." The genre-shaking soap opera aired for 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991, chronicling the dramatic, twist-filled epic saga of the Ewing Oil dynasty.

On a picturesque ranch in Dallas, Texas, the family used their money, connections, and cunning to bat away threats from outside and within. Whatever threats that rival oilman, spurned lovers, or wannabe politicians think they can pose, "Dallas" always reminds us that there's nothing stronger -- or more dangerous -- than family.

Over 30 years have passed since the final episode of the original series, and there's been well over 10 years of silence from this world following a brief revival on TNT. As such, many are curious about what happened to the cast of "Dallas," so we tracked down as much information about its massive ensemble cast as we could.

Isabella Rossellini Scores First Oscar Nomination for ‘Conclave’
Image
After a four-decade career in films, Isabella Rossellini scored her first Oscar nomination on Thursday for her supporting role as a Vatican nun in “Conclave.”

The nomination places Rossellini in the Academy history books. She is the daughter of three-time Oscar-winning actress Ingrid Bergman. Her father, the Italian neorealist filmmaking legend Roberto Rossellini was also nominated once, in 1950 for his screenplay for “Paisan.”

Swedish acting legend Bergman is often cited as one of the greatest screen icons of all time, famed for her roles in “Casablanca,” “The Bells of St. Marys” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Notorious.” She was a seven-time nominee who won three Oscars: two for Best Actress (“Gaslight” and “Anastasia”) and one for Best Supporting Actress (“Murder on the Orient Express”).

Rossellini’s nomination this year, in fact, comes on the 50th anniversary of her mother’s win for “Orient Express,” an all-star mystery film in which Bergman...

Brilliant Minds Just Cornered NBC Into Renewing It For Season 2
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Brilliant Minds season 1, episodes 12 and 13 (the season finale).Brilliant Minds' season 1 finale may have backed NBC into a corner when it comes to making a renewal decision. Although the finale ends with several significant cliffhangers, NBC hasn't decided whether Brilliant Minds season 2 will happen. The neurology-focused medical drama concluded its first season with a two-hour finale that features a shocking twist. After spending the first hour dealing with the building collapse, the series reveals that a seemingly random doctor (Mandy Patinkin) who was helping treat collapse victims is actually Noah Wolf — Oliver's (Zachary Quinto) supposedly dead father.

During the second half of the finale, Oliver wants to focus on the case of a pastor who is having strange hallucinations and perception issues, such as believing her husband is a hat on a rack. However, his world is turned upside down when he learns his father is alive.

The Pitt TV Review: Noah Wyle returns to the ER in this intense real-time medical series
Image
Last Updated on January 6, 2025

Plot: A realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Each episode follows an hour of Dr. Michael “Robby” Rabinavitch’s 15-hour shift as the chief attendant in Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital’s emergency room.

Review: Back in the 1990s, two competing medical dramas debuted on network television the same year. CBS series Chicago Hope hailed from David E. Kelley and lasted for six seasons, while NBC’s ER, from creator and medical doctor Michael Crichton, stayed on for fifteen years. ER launched the careers of Juliana Marguiles, George Clooney, and newcomer Noah Wyle. Fifteen years after its series finale, ER veteran Noah Wyle is back in scrubs in a similar yet unique medical drama. The Pitt, from ER showrunner John Wells. Shifting away from...

R.I.P. Bradford English of Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
Image
Bradford English had a screen acting career that spanned from 1971 to 2010, and over those 39 years he racked up more than 70 credits – but for many of us, he’s best remembered for playing the drunk, abusive blowhard John Strode in the 1995 horror sequel Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Sadly, we lost English right before Halloween this year, as it has been reported that he passed away on October 25th in Pasadena, California at the age of 82.

English was born in South Orange, New Jersey on January 16, 1942. His obituary can be found online and says he “was a true force of life and was filled with love. He was a husband and a family man who was survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart Cecelia Gail English. Together they created a beautiful family of four children: James Bradford English Jr., Jeffrey Brennan English, Kristin Lunney English and Colleen Margaret Theresa English.

Image
The Rookie guest star Ali Larter opens up about the chances of returning as Dr. Grace Sawyer. Known for her multiple roles in the NBC show Heroes and for playing Clear Rivers in the first two Final Destination films, Larter recently returned to television in the Taylor Sheridan oil saga Landman. The series, which streams on Paramount+, marks Larter's first main cast member role since 2016's short-lived baseball drama Pitch. But she recurred heavily during The Rookie season 2, playing a love interest of Nathan Fillion's John Nolan.

In comments to MovieWeb, during a press event for Landman, Larter reflected on her time as Grace Sawyer. The actor mentions that she enjoyed working on the ABC, specifically citing her experience working with Fillion. Nicholas Pryor Dies: Soap Veteran & ‘Risky Business’ Actor Who Recurred On ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Was 89
Image
Nicholas Pryor, whose nearly seven-decade acting career included hundreds of episodes of soap operas, playing Tom Cruise’s dad in Risky Business and Kathleen Robertson’s dad on Beverly Hills, 90210, died October 7. He was 89.

Fellow actor Jon Lindstrom announced the news on social media, saying in part: “Nick was an Actor’s actor, and an exceptional friend. … He was a mentor, a sounding board, a trusted confidant, and even a father-figure beyond, yes, playing my own father on #Gh and #PortCharles.” See his full post below.

Pryor racked up nearly 175 screen credits and half-dozen more on Broadway. After getting his screen start guesting on such 1950s and early ’60s TV series as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Doctors, he played Tom Baxter in more than 75 episodes of the NBC daytime drama Another World. That led to a starring role on The Nurses, a 1965-67 continuation of CBS’ The Nurses, which...

Isabella Rossellini to Receive Lifetime Achievement Honor at 2024 European Film Awards
Image
Italian actress Isabella Rossellini will receive the European Achievement in World Cinema award, a lifetime achievement honor, at this year’s European Film Awards.

The Italian-American star, daughter of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman and Italian film director Roberto Rossellini, was a successful fashion model — famously for French cosmetics brand Lancôme — before shifting into acting. Her first leading role came in the Taviani brothers’ drama The Meadow (1979), but her international breakout was David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986) in which she played the mysterious and tortured nightclub singer Dorothy Vallens. The performance, in which Rossellini also sang the film’s titular tune, won her the Independent Spirit Award for best female lead.

Over the next four decades, Rossellini carved out a unique career in cinema, moving between big-budget features — Robert Zemeckis’ Death Becomes Her (1992), Peter Weir’s Fearless (1993) — and independent auteur films, working with Peter Greenaway (2003’s The Tulse Luper Suitcases), Guy...

Did you know that Chris Pine's dad, actor Robert Pine, played a super-tiny role on "The Office" as the father of John Krasinski's Jim Halpert? You probably didn't — but on a recent podcast, stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey discussed the elder Pine's time on their set.

In the 109th episode of "Office Ladies" — a recap podcast about the hit NBC mockumentary sitcom — Fischer and Kinsey tackled the first half of season 6's "Niagara," which centers around the wedding of Jim and Pam (Fischer). "This is where we are going to meet Jim's parents for the first time," Fischer says as the two discuss the scene featuring the couple's rehearsal dinner. "We have Betsy Halpert, played by Perry Smith, and Gerald Halpert, played by Robert Pine, who is the father of actor Chris Pine."

"People were so excited," Kinsey said, and Fischer agreed: "We were a little bit excited.

Warner Bros. TV Fires Back at Michael Crichton’s Widow Over ‘Baseless’ Claim ‘The Pitt’ Is an ‘ER’ Ripoff: It’s a ‘New and Original Show’ (Exclusive)
Image
Warner Bros. TV has responded to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by Michael Crichton‘s widow, calling the legal move “baseless” and arguing that the studio’s upcoming medical procedural “The Pitt” is very different from “ER.”

“The lawsuit filed by the Crichton Estate is baseless, as ‘The Pitt’ is a new and original show,” the studio said in a statement. “Any suggestion otherwise is false, and Warner Bros. Television intends to vigorously defend against these meritless claims.”

The swift Warner Bros. response comes after the Crichton estate accused exec producer John Wells of a “personal betrayal,” claiming that he and star Noah Wyle came up with “The Pitt” after the Crichton estate blocked their plans to reboot “ER.” “‘The Pitt’ is ‘ER,’” the lawsuit states. “It’s not like ‘ER.’ It’s not kind of ‘ER.’ It’s not sort of ‘ER.’ It is ‘ER’ with the exact same executive producer,...

‘ER’: 25 greatest episodes ranked worst to best
Image
It is not hyperbolic to say that “ER” was a game-changer when it premiered 30 years ago. And the best part is, no one saw it coming. CBS’ much-hyped and also Chicago-set “Chicago Hope” was predicted to win the Great Medical Drama War of the 1994-95 TV season.

And then NBC unleashed its two-hour “ER” pilot on Monday, September 19, 1994, and an instant hit was born. No one had seen a hospital show like “ER” before, with its addictive blend of propulsive filmmaking — its innovative Steadicam long takes have since been adopted by numerous shows — accelerated pace and thoughtful storytelling that conveyed a riveting sense of medical realism that is still unmatched. It also made overnight stars out of its original cast, Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, Sherry Stringfield, Noah Wyle, Julianna Margulies and Eriq La Salle.

“ER” — which amassed 124 Emmy nominations 23 wins, including Best Drama Series in 1996 — was also one of the...

Why Tom Selleck Dropped Out Of Freaky Friday
Image
Tom Selleck was originally cast in Freaky Friday but dropped out after Annette Bening. The movie faced production issues, with Annette Bening and Michelle Trachtenberg dropping out. Mark Harmon replaced Selleck and brought his experience in teen comedy to the role in Freaky Friday.

Although 2003s Freaky Friday is a cult classic, the Disney body swap comedy originally offered a major role to Tom Selleck. Directed by Mark Waters, Freaky Friday was a huge hit for its stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Earning over $160 million on a budget of only $26 million, Freaky Friday paved the way for Lohan and Waters to make teen movie history a year later when the pair reunited on Mean Girls. Freaky Fridays adaptation of Mary Rodgers classic novel was hugely popular and its sequel, Freaky Friday 2, will be released in 2025.

Before Freaky Friday became a cult classic, the movie endured a surprisingly...

This NCIS Actor Was First To Utter 1 Swear Word On Scripted TV (& It Couldn't Be More Fitting)
Image
Mark Harmon broke the taboo of using profanity on scripted TV with his character Jack McNeil in Chicago Hope in 1999. Harmon's no-nonsense characters in Chicago Hope and NCIS paved the way for more relaxed standards in TV programming. In his upcoming project, Freaky Friday 2, Harmon will depart from his serious roles, showcasing his caring and patient qualities.

This one NCIS actor was the first to utter one forbidden word on television, changing the media forever. While expletives are commonplace on television now, someone had to utter them first to break down the walls of tradition and usher new slang into the media. While television has relaxed its standards to adhere to the times, the media's breakdown was gradual. Some actors and musicians got away with profanity on live TV in the 1960s and '70s but often faced the consequences. It was another beast to usher cursing into scripted network TV,...

Chicago Med Casting News: Dominic Rains Out As Series Regular
Oliver Platt, Steven Weber, Marlyne Barrett, S. Epatha Merkerson, and Jessy Schram in Chicago Med (2015)
Chicago Med is short a cast member going into season 10, and this one hurts.

Dominic Rains' Crockett Marcel was in a precarious position as Chicago Med Season 9 ended, but with no official word that Rains was leaving, I hoped it was a false alarm.

Sadly, the news broke earlier today via Deadline that Rains is leaving Med.

Why This News Isn't Entirely Unexpected

Dr. Marcel seemed like he was getting more and more unhappy throughout Chicago Med Season 9.

Marcel was mentoring Zola for the first part of the season, but when she was fired for not following protocol, Dr. Archer blamed Marcel -- and Marcel listened.

He then tried to micromanage Dr. Tanaka-Reed to make up for his "mistakes" with Zola, leading to an unnecessarily tense situation.

Worse yet, Dr. Marcel lost a patient that triggered his trauma over his young daughter's death.

Noah Wyle Recalls ‘ER’ Success, Reveals Near-Revival Before New Medical Drama
Image
Noah Wyle, best known for his role as Dr. John Carter on the hit medical drama “ER,” recently shared insights into the show’s early days and a potential revival that never came to fruition. In separate interviews, Wyle discussed the moment he knew “ER” would be a success and the discussions that led to his upcoming project, “The Pitt.”

Speaking on the Still Here Hollywood podcast with Steve Kmetko, Wyle recounted the moment he realized “ER” was destined for greatness. During a preview event in New York City’s Avery Fisher Hall, clips from the two-hour pilot were shown to an audience. “The place went crazy, like clapping, cheering, stomping,” Wyle said. “We all got this rush.” This reaction, he noted, was when the cast realized they were part of something special.

Wyle also revealed that the show’s success was not a foregone conclusion. “We shot the pilot...

Former ER Star Reveals the Moment He Knew the Series Was Going To Be a Hit
Image
Noah Wyle knew ER would be a success after the audience's positive reaction to the pilot episode clips. Michael Crichton created ER, initially as a film, turning it into a TV series under Steven Spielberg's influence. ER overcame doubts, surpassing Chicago Hope and becoming a timeless classic.

Former ER star Noah Wyle recently sat down to reflect on the hit series, and at which point he knew it was going to be a success. According to him, it was very early on in its creation. Wyle played the part of John Carter on ER, which ran for 15 seasons from 1994 to 2009 on NBC. The series also starred the likes of George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Julianna Margulies, and Eriq La Salle, and to this day its influence is felt in shows like Greys Anatomy and Chicago Med.

Chatting on the Still Here Hollywood podcast with Steve Kmetko, Noah Wyle said that...

The Leroy Jethro Gibbs & Director Leon Vance Actors Go Way Back
Image
Harmon & Carroll's history predates NCIS - both appeared in Chicago Hope, reuniting them on the successful police procedural series. Carroll credits Harmon for his NCIS role. Harmon will executive produce NCIS: Origins, while Carroll continues as NCIS director. Harmon & Carroll are key players in the NCIS franchise, competing for the most appearances. Harmon will return to a spinoff, Carroll in season 22.

NCIS actors Mark Harmon (Leroy Jethro Gibbs) and Rocky Carroll (Leon Vance) go way back, even further than their extended time together in the cast of NCIS. Mark Harmon has appeared as Jethro Gibbs since NCIS originated as a backdoor pilot on the legal drama Jag. Rocky Carroll joined the show as NCIS Director Leon Vance a little while later in NCIS season 5, making him the show's longest-standing NCIS director. While both actors have a track record as mainstays on the show for nearly two decades, respectively, their...

Image
Erich Anderson, who was sometimes also credited as E. Erich Anderson, racked up over 100 credits during a screen acting career that stretched from 1983 into the 2020s, but he may be best known for playing the role of Rob in the 1984 slasher classic Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. A character out for revenge, Rob looked like he had a shot at being able to take down hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees for good… but when Rob finally caught up with Jason, things did not go well for him at all. Among Friday the 13th fans, Rob has become a favorite due to the fact that he seems so cool and capable at first, but then whiffs his shot at vengeance in a major way. Emmys mystery: How often do cast additions to drama series win?
Image
Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.

According to Gold Derby’s odds, the performer from the sixth and final season of “The Crown” with the best shot at Emmy glory is supporting female frontrunner Elizabeth Debicki. She played the role of Princess Diana for two seasons, finishing the job started by younger season four cast member Emma Corrin. The characters embodied by predicted nominees Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II...

‘A Man In Full’ Trailer:  Jeff Daniels Must Protect His Dying Real Estate Empire In New Netflix Drama Series
Image
Facing relentless foes and sudden bankruptcy, an Atlanta real estate tycoon must claw his way back to the top when his empire begins to crumble. That’s the premise of the new Netflix series, “A Man In Full,” starring Jeff Daniels. Based on the New York Times bestselling novel by the late author Tom Wolfe, the series comes from David E. Kelly, the TV super producer behind classic TV shows like “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” “Picket Fences,” “Chicago Hope,” “The Practice,” “Ally McBeal.” Kelly also soared higher and proved his TV might during the era of streaming PeakTV, creating “Big Little Lies,” “The Undoing” with Nicole Kidman, “Nine Perfect Strangers” and dozens more.

Cocoon (1985)
Suits, Ted Lasso, and the Rise of Comfort TV: Is the Desire For Easy Viewing Creating a Barren Streaming Landscape?
Cocoon (1985)
Perhaps you've had this experience:

You hear about an interesting movie or show, or you remember an old favorite, and you reason that since it's a well-known title, it's several years old, and you subscribe to several streaming services, you should be able to watch it for free somewhere.

Then you conduct the research that's necessary to find anything in the vast streaming landscape, and you realize that you're gonna have to shell out to rent or buy this thing.

Or worse, that film or series simply is not available. Anywhere.

If you're lucky, you can go on Amazon and have the DVD delivered in a couple of days, but you haven't seen your DVD player since Obama was in office, and you need something to watch now.

Freddie Highmore in The Good Doctor (2017)
The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 1 Spoilers: Will a Heartbreaking Story Get Things Back on Track?
Freddie Highmore in The Good Doctor (2017)
The Good Doctor returns for one final season, and spoilers suggest it'll be more like the way it used to be.

In recent years, the show has morphed into a relationship drama centered around Shaun and Lea's constant clashes, with some Glassman drama thrown in.

There will still be plenty of that on The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 1, but those subplots appear to be mixed into a solid medical storyline.

According to spoilers, Morgan's baby needs a new heart valve -- and someone else's needs the same thing.

This set-up reminds me of years ago on Chicago Hope when Mandy Patinkin's character wanted to use a brain-dead baby's heart to save another child, but the mother wasn't ready to admit her newborn had no chance of survival.

But in this case, one of the mothers is Morgan, and both mothers have a baby who is alive but struggling.

Morgan...

How Futurama Became A Career-Defining First For John Dimaggio
Image
Watch any American cartoons (and/or play some video games) made in the 2000s-2010s and you'll notice some familiar voices across the shows. One voice you're bound to hear is that of John Dimaggio.

Born and raised in New Jersey, with the accent to prove it, the 6'4 Dimaggio has a deep voice that's as imposing as his frame. Don't think that he lacks range, though. He can play lovable heroes (Jake the Dog in "Adventure Time" or Aquaman in "Batman: The Brave and the Bold") and tough guys who are more emotional than they let on (Marcus Fenix in "Gears of War" or the short-tempered humanoid tiger alien Rath in "Ben 10"). He's just as good at playing villains, if not more so due to his baritone. Dimaggio's bad guys range from serious bad news to incompetent comic relief (Dr. Drakken in "Kim Possible").

He's also been in most of the "Transformers" films,...

How David Boreanaz Evolved From Buffy To Seal Team
Image
David Boreanaz got his start as the brooding vampire Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which defined the genre and influenced future vampire bad boy characters. Boreanaz broke into the world of procedural TV with his role as FBI agent Seeley Booth in Bones, showcasing his range as an actor. Currently, Boreanaz is gaining recognition as the fierce leader Jason Hayes in Seal Team, proving his versatility and solidifying his status as a prolific television actor.

Starring in a procedural TV show can give many actors their breakout roles, turning them into international stars. Actors like Matthew Gray Gubler, Pauley Perette, Mariska Hargitay, and Emily Deschanel rose to stardom thanks to their roles in shows like Criminal Minds, NCIS, Law & Order, and Bones. The stars of these series often make a name for themselves exclusively through their work as Detective So and So. However, there are other times when...

Death and Other Details' Violett Beane Says Viewers Will Be Insanely Surprised by the Ending
Image
Step aside (for now) White Lotus, Only Murders in the Building, and even you, Knives Out. Violett Beane, who plays Imogene, a wannabe murder-mystery solver on Hulu’s Death and Other Details, says “trust no one.” She goes on to say that audiences should expect a big twist coming up in the new series, which has generated buzz for its White Lotus by way of Agatha Christie vibes. “I think audiences will be insanely surprised by the final episode. You definitely don't know what's going to happen. I haven't seen anything quite like it in any of these newer murder mysteries.”

The shocking season finale doesn’t air until March 5, but fans are already eager to know about a potential second season. “On the creative side, absolutely, we love the idea of a season two, and have so many ideas of where we would go with it,” Beane added. “In terms of production,...

Why Did Mark Harmon Abruptly Leave NCIS?
Image
Mark Harmon completed an 18-year run as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, making it the third longest-running scripted prime-time TV series. Harmon's final appearance as Gibbs was in the 19th season, but he's not retired from acting and may return for a final goodbye. NCIS transformed Harmon's career and legacy, with Gibbs being the most recognized role for younger audiences, despite his earlier sex-symbol persona.

When Mark Harmon began his historic run as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the CBS police procedural television series NCIS in 2003, he had been acting on television for approximately thirty years. However, despite the vast experience that Harmon brought to NCIS, nothing could have prepared Harmon for a run that lasted approximately eighteen years. Indeed, prior to NCIS, Harmon’s longest run on a television series had been on the CBS medical drama series Chicago Hope, in which Harmon appeared in ninety-five episodes...

10 Things I Hate About Julia Stiles

I hate that her idgaf attitude was not present in more 90s teen rom coms.

I hate that I totally forgot about the movie Save The Last Dance.

I hate that she doesn’t get the respect she deserves.

I hate that I thought she was in that movie Swimfan.

I hate that she got stuck doing generic rom coms.

I hate that her character in the Jason Bourne franchise never got a spin-off.

I hate that I really haven’t seen much of her later work.

I hate that she tricked me into liking Shakespeare as a teen.

But most of all, I hate the way I don’t hate her – not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all. Oh, and I hate that I don’t know what the heck happened to her?

So let’s find out: Wtf Happened to.

What Happened To Mia Sara
Image
Mia Sara, known for her iconic role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, has been mostly retired from acting and focusing on her passion for writing as a poet. Sara has expressed that her time working on Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Legend was not enjoyable, and she does not look back on those roles fondly. Mia Sara is making a comeback to the big screen in the upcoming Stephen King movie The Life of Chuck, directed by Mike Flanagan and featuring a star-studded cast.

Highly regarded as one of the most iconic and talented actresses of the '80s, Mia Sara has not been in the spotlight much since her role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, leading to speculation about what she has been up to. Mia Sara made her film debut in 1985 as Princess Lili in the cult-classic film Legend, alongside Tom Cruise. Before that, she had been...
