Sylvie Pialat, Producer of Cannes’ Opening Film ‘Leave One Day,’ Sets Projects With Directors Emmanuelle Bercot, Atiq Rahimi and Gustav Kervern (Exclusive)
Image
Sylvie Pialat (“Timbuktu”), the producer of Cannes’ opening night movie “Leave One Day” directed by Amelie Bonnin, is on the roll. The Cesar-winning producer, who runs the Paris-based banner Les Films du Worso, is currently developing a raft of new projects from renown European auteurs and up-and-comers, including Alain Gomis, Emmanuelle Bercot, Atiq Rahimi, Hu Wei and Felipe Gálvez.

Pialat will be working for the first time with Emmanuelle Bercot, the critically acclaimed French actress and filmmaker whose directorial effort “Leaving” world premiered at Cannes in 2021 and earned Benoit Magimel a best actor prize at the Cesar Awards in 2022. Bercot also had her 2015 movie “Standing Tall” open the Cannes Film Festival.

Bercot’s untitled next movie, which will reteam Pialat with Pathé Films, her partner on “Leave One Day,” is an adaptation of the book called “L’Enragé,” written by journalist Sorj Chalandon. The movie will tell the gripping true story...

The Surfer
Image
We never learn the name of Nicolas Cage’s character in The Surfer. (He is credited simply as ‘The Surfer’.) It might, then, be tempting to think that this film — which features yet another Cage character slowly descending into madness — is simply an example of the ‘Nicolas Cage Type’, of ‘Cage Rage’, of the kind of uniquely bizarre freakout that has for years provided ample fodder for meme-merchants and YouTube compilation editors.

But this is not quite the Cage of bees and bunnies in boxes. Instead it’s a surreal, somewhat psychedelic riff on Hitchcockian suspense from Irish director Lorcan Finnegan, who has specialised in such material, and in turn Cage seems to be channelling something closer to Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo, or Michael Douglas in Falling Down: an ordinary but obsessive man, pushed to his limits.

The crazy here is coming from outside of Cage as much as within,...

3 Doors Down Singer Brad Arnold’s Stage 4 Cancer: Michael Douglas Beating Stage 4 Cancer Should Be a Source of Inspiration for Him
Image
The voice behind some of 3 Doors Down’s biggest hits, Brad Arnold, has revealed a personal battle with stage 4 kidney cancer. The frontman revealed earlier this week that he’s been diagnosed with clear cell renal cell carcinoma and that it has metastasized to his lungs. This devastating news has left fans shaken, and millions are worried for the singer’s health.

3 Doors Down was all set for its highly anticipated summer 2025 tour with Creed, however, the band will have to cancel the tour with Arnold undergoing treatment. Despite the relatively serious diagnosis, Arnold is not one to give up easily. The band pausing its music journey to prioritize the singer’s health and Arnold’s honesty has struck a chord with listeners who’ve followed their journey for years.

All 7 Albums of Selena Gomez, Ranked
Image
Selena Gomez has been serving up music for over a decade, and let’s be honest, her discography is a rollercoaster of emotions, bops, and the occasional experimental moment that left us raising an eyebrow. From her early ‘Selena Gomez & the Scene’ days to her solo evolution, she’s given us everything from heart-wrenching ballads to sassy breakup anthems, and dance tracks that refuse to leave our heads. Some albums hit just right, making us scream the lyrics at 2 Am, while others, well, let’s just say they had potential.

Gomez has undeniably grown, both as an artist and a person. Her music reflects her journey, from the innocent Disney days to full-on pop queen with a side of heartbreak vibes. Whether she’s giving us whispery vocals or a full-blown emotional meltdown in song form, there’s always something memorable. But not all albums are created equal, and that’s where we come in.

Bruce Willis Almost Starred In A Sci-Fi Remake Of A Classic John Wayne Western
Image
Whenever Roger Ebert saw a limp Hollywood remake of a classic movie, the esteemed film critic used to lament that studios had it all wrong. They shouldn't be redoing movies that were already brilliant, but, rather, revisiting films with promising premises that, for whatever reason, didn't work the first time out. While this may sound like perfectly reasonable advice, studios typically aren't keen to throw money at projects that already failed once. That's how executives get fired.

This is how we get unwanted, undercooked remakes like 2006's "The Omen," 2012's "Total Recall," and 2014's "RoboCop." The originals were smart, zeitgeisty genre flicks from top-notch directors, while the second go-rounds were sweaty retreads with no point of view and, thus, no reason for being -- but at least the execs who greenlit these movies could defend them on the grounds of brand recognition. Had they gone down in flames with a remake of,...

Christopher Lee's Classic 1973 Horror Movie Weirdly Became A Heavy Metal Song 27 Years Later
Image
Christopher Lee starred in many now-classic horror movies, among them The Wicker Man, which ended up becoming the direct inspiration for a metal song 27 years after its release. Christopher Lee is one of the most respected actors of his generation, with an impressive career spanning over six decades and covering not just movies and TV projects but also music. Lee became widely known after playing Dracula in seven Hammer Horror movies, which also made him one of the most iconic horror actors ever. Outside his Dracula movies, one of Lee’s most notable horror movies is The Wicker Man.

The Wicker Man was directed by Robin Hardy, written by Anthony Shaffer, and inspired by David Pinner’s 1967 novel Ritual. The Wicker Man is a folk horror movie that follows Sgt. Neil Howie (Edward Woodward), who travels to the island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. There...

Netflix’s Newest Certified Fresh Thriller Bears a Striking Resemblance to an Underrated 22-Year-Old Film
Image
For the Christmas season, Netflix finally released Jaume Collet-Serra's next action thriller, Carry-On. Starring Taron Edgerton and Jason Bateman, Carry-On sees the Christmas season at Lax take a dark and threatening turn when an international criminal secretly takes a Tsa worker hostage. Since its release, the film has been consistently in Netflix's top ten and has been receiving great reviews from critics and fans alike. Audiences consider the film to be a solid hit for the streaming company, with some fans even noting the similarities the film has to other action-packed hits within the same genre. Others in Collet-Serra's filmography even have some similarities to Carry-On, such as his other Liam Neeson-led transportation-related films Non-Stop and The Commuter, both getting moderate to positive praise. But the film that probably most resembles Netflix's newest hit is an underrated Joel Schumacher classic from 2002, called Phone Booth.

In all the best ways,...

Michael Douglas Blames Silicon Valley for "Dumbing Down" Hollywood
Image
With a career spanning more than five decades, Michael Douglas has seen the movie business evolve before his very eyes, but lately he’s been critical of what the future holds for the industry, going so far as to say it’s been dumbed down by one region in particular: California’s Silicon Valley. Douglas got his start in 1966 as 'Jeep Driver' in his father’s film, Cast a Giant Shadow, the title of which is apropos when you consider that he’s a nepo baby that lived in the shadow of Kirk Douglas for much of his early years.

Currently in the midst of filming the upcoming drama Blood Knot, Douglas was on hand at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for an informal chat (via The Hollywood Reporter) that saw him discuss the changes in Hollywood over the years. While 35mm is still used in many productions,...

Michael Douglas’s 'Falling Down' Predicted Today’s Political Climate
Image
Quick Links Bill Foster Is Mad as Hell and Isn't Going to Take It Anymore in 'Falling Down' 'Falling Down' Predicted a Vanishing Middle Class Michael Douglas Deserved an Oscar for 'Falling Down'

The 2024 presidential election revealed that the United States remains a starkly divided nation, both ideologically and especially in terms of perceptions of the economy, as while those people who have invested in the stock market have experienced great returns, millions of people have little or no savings and struggle to afford to buy groceries.

The middle-class political revolt that took place with the 2024 election was anticipated over 30 years ago in the 1993 psychological thriller film Falling Down, in which Michael Douglas stars as Bill Foster, a recently divorced and unemployed defense engineer whose anger and confusion over being rendered irrelevant is highlighted through a series of violent encounters that Foster has while...

“I just took off my jacket”: Sharon Stone Went to Extreme Lengths to Convince Michael Douglas for Basic Instinct That Will Never Happen Today
Image
Sharon Stone has been proving her excellence in acting for decades now, and Basic Instincts, which became her breakthrough role in the entertainment industry, continues to leave fans baffled at her eminence. Not only does she fit perfectly in her role as Catherine Tramell in the erotic thriller-mystery film series, but her performance is still regarded among her best ones to date.

Sharon Stone. | Credits: Basic Instinct / TriStar Pictures.

Surprisingly enough, the role didn’t come to her easily, for, as it turns out, Stone had to go far and wide and to extreme lengths to bag the part. What’s even more surprising is that the one she had to convince wasn’t filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, but rather, it was Michael Douglas – her co-star and equally fitting part of the first film, who played Detective Nick Curran in it.

Michael Douglas Wasn’t Convinced About Sharon Stone for Basic...

Bruiser (2000) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
What if I told you that the late directing legend George Romero wrote and directed an ahead-of-its-time “one bad day” revenge slasher classic back in 2000 that mixed Michael Douglas in Falling Down with Michael Myers from Halloween and featured a live performance by The Misfits… yet no one noticed? It would take Robert Stack and a special episode of Unsolved Mysteries to uncover how a film that was arguably one of George Romero’s best films in the second half of his career went completely unnoticed, and stayed that way even as we speak today… This is just what happened to Bruiser.

Look for yourself and you’ll find a very thin file on the existence of Bruiser (watch it Here). To craft even the video you’re watching right now we had to reach into the time vault of eBay and find a DVD copy featuring a commentary from...

Jennifer Seward is a 'Super Happy Fun Clown' in Horror Comedy Teaser
Image
A first look teaser trailer has debuted for the indie horror comedy film called Super Happy Fun Clown, the latest creation from indie genre filmmaker Patrick Rea. It kind of sounds like a mashup between Joker and Falling Down (always worth a watch) featuring a woman this time who goes berserk and heads on a killing spree. To escape a life of oppressed obscurity, a battered former wunderkind weaponizes her obsession with clowning, serial killers, & classic movie monsters into a night of shocking infamy. Jennifer Seward stars as a woman who dresses up as "Jenn-o the Clown", who decides to let loose after realize her life is fading away. The film also features Dan Daly, Tim Shelburne, Nicole Hall, Matt Leisy, Deborah Madick, and Violet Rea. Thanks to Bloody Disgusting for the tip on this. Looks like it might turn out pretty badass - a brutal tale of vengeance from a pissed off clown.

3 Years After Batman & Robin, Joel Schumacher Helmed This Highly Underrated Vietnam War Film
Image
Quick Links Joel Schumaker Had a Hard Time Moving Past Batman & Robin What is the Story of Tigerland? Tigerland Was One Of Joel Schumacher's Most Acclaimed Films

The late Joel Schumacher directed many iconic films throughout his career, from The Lost Boys to A Time to Kill. It's almost impossible, however, to hear the director's name and talk about him without making his involvement with DC part of the conversation. Despite the acclaim he received for his direction in thrillers and dramas, his brief time in the comic book/superhero genre wasn't quite met the same way. Batman Forever opened to mixed reviews in 1995, but it was 1997's Batman & Robin that received the biggest amount of backlash. Although his two Batman movies have come to be seen in a better light than how they were initially upon their release, the negative impact that they had on his career is undeniable.

10 Movies To Watch If You Loved Joker (That Aren't Folie Deux)
Image
Joker: Folie Deux hasn't made a great impression on fans of the first film, prompting an examination of movies more similar to 2019's Joker to watch as a palette cleanser. Openly antagonistic towards fans of the previous film, Joker: Folie Deux failed to reach an audience, flopping even harder than infamous comic book movie bombs like Morbius and Madame Web. With the sequel so widely disappointing for those who enjoyed Joker, it's a better time than ever to examine some great films that are more similar to the first film than Joker: Folie Deux is.

The themes of Joker include mental health, loneliness, abuse, and societal disenfranchisement, all of which are better represented elsewhere than in the commercial disaster that is Joker: Folie Deux. Some of these films are obvious influences on the original, reflecting themselves through Todd Phillips' work both stylistically and thematically. Others are simple great chasers to the ideas presented in Joker,...

John Waters 1994 Horror Comedy Doesnt Get the Credit It Deserves
Image
Through his provocative, original style, John Waters has made many films that garnered cult followings. In the majority of his mainstream movies, the characters and plot are usually exaggerated, creating a campy style of entertainment. Still bound in reality somewhat, this creates room for brilliant comedic stories. He satirized themes like suburban living, celebrity culture and gender roles. Even when aiming for gross-out or comedy, Waters reflects on the darker sides of society. In his film Crybaby, this is prevalent, and it's even more so in his hilariously dark comedy Serial Mom.

Serial Mom follows Beverly Sutphin, a suburban mother who seems normal, but has a gross infatuation with all things murderous. She quickly transforms from what the police call her, "Beaver Cleaver's mother," to a grand suspect in multiple murders in their suburban Baltimore town. Initially, Beverly seems like a typical suburban mom who audiences have seen in every classic sitcom.

John Carney in Once (2006)
The stage musical adaptation of John Carney’s Sing Street is heading to London in 2025. Here’s what you can expect:

According to Deadline, the stage production of Sing Street is finally coming to the UK, having premiered in the US two years ago. It will play at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith from the 8th July to the 23rd August 2025, with the possibility of a West End transfer if it’s successful. James Bond's Barbara Broccoli is producing.

Walsh said in a statement that Broccoli “is steering the whole thing, she steered the show from the beginning. She’s the one who originally approached me to do it after we had so much fun on Once“.

Michael Douglas Reminisces About Meeting Now-Wife Catherine Zeta-Jones During Career Tribute at Deauville Film Festival
Image
Michael Douglas reminisced about meeting his now wife Catherine Zeta-Jones at France’s Deauville American Film Festival in 1998 as he received a career tribute on Friday, the opening night of the milestone 50th anniversary edition.

Douglas, who was introduced on stage by his “Franklin” co-star Ludivine Sagnier (“Lupin”) and drew a long standing ovation, went on to talk — partly in French — about his long history with the Deauville Film Festival and precisely the “slight issue of Catherine.”

“I had just seen three weeks before I came to the festival this movie ‘Zorro,’ ‘Mon Dieu!,” joked Douglas. “When I arrived supporting our film, I think it was ‘Perfect Murder,’ I look at the catalogue and I see that ‘Zorro’ is coming the next night, so I ask my assistant, ‘Can you find out if Catherine Zeta-Jones is coming?’ And is she coming alone and if I could have a drink with her.

Exclusive Interview: Paugh Shadow (The Omicron Killer) When did you first decide you wanted to venture into the filmmaking industry and is it all you dreamt it would be? After 9/11 and I was walking the streets of Manhattan because I lost my job at the World Trade Center, I saw people filming a movie. I asked what they were doing and asked if I could be apart. The rest is history. I just kept finding projects and progressed from there. Absolutely not what I dreamt it would be. It is definitely harder than one imagines. You have worked as an actor and a voice actor which one do you have more of a passion for and what is the vocal challenges between the roles? I have an equal passion for both. I have just had more opportunities with just acting as oppose to voice acting. The vocal challenges with acting...

The Simpsons' Frank Grimes Gave Hank Azaria A 'Rare Opportunity'
Image
The episode of "The Simpsons" called "Homer's Enemy" is one of the most memorable — and darkest — episodes of the series. It features a new character named Frank Grimes (Hank Azaria), recently hired at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Grimes is stern, serious, intelligent, and worked his way into a well-paying nuclear power gig after struggling out of childhood poverty. He has an unshakeable work ethic, and a deep concern for safety. Naturally, when he meets a feckless, incompetent boob like Homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta), Grimes instantly becomes incensed. How can this fool, Grimes felt, have a successful job and a loving family, even when he is obviously incompetent to a life-threatening degree?

Homer's incompetence even gets Grimes in trouble. When Homer almost drinks a glass of sulfuric acid, Grimes slaps it out of his hand, accidentally dissolving part of a nearby wall. Grimes receives a pay cut for destroying the wall.

‘Yannick’ Review
Image
Stars: Raphaël Quenard, Pio Marmaï, Blanche Gardin, Sébastien Chassagne, Agnès Hurstel, Jean-Paul Solal, Laurent Nicolas | Written and Directed by Quentin Dupieux

With a lengthy directorial career since the early 2000s, French director Quentin Dupieux has made a name for himself as an interesting surrealist. It helps that his unique takes on relatable issues are quick watches, with films rarely lasting longer than 80 minutes, and Yannick is a fascinating example of what the creative delivers so effectively.

Dupieux’s twelfth feature opens with a play entitled The Cuckold, as three actors perform on-stage to a half-empty room. While the consistent laughs make it clear that the audience is enjoying the play, the performance is interrupted by Yannick (Raphaël Quenard), a night watchman who stands up to share his displeasure. His reasonings are that he took a day off work and travelled an hour to see this play, yet it does not...

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Raising Cain was Written and Narrated by Mike Holtz, Edited by Joseph Wilson, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

There’s a lot to miss about the ’90s. Video stores. Arcades. Music Television. On and on. One of the many things I miss is the slew of original thrillers that used to grace the big screen. Each one with varying amounts of horror, cheesiness, and sex. Richard Gere and Michael Douglas were involved in more sex and danger in the ’90s than Maureen Prescott’s ghost. But today isn’t about watching the guy from Falling Down rip his expensive and pleated slacks off in a fever of passion. It’s about directing legend Brian De Palma returning to the genre with his very own fever dream Fight Club. A story of split personalities,...

One of Michael Douglas' Best Performances Is in This Overlooked Dramedy
Image
A challenge that many movie stars face as they enter the second stage of their careers is managing to retain their leading roles whilst finding a way to reinvent the persona that they’re often associated with. That challenge is certainly exacerbated for actors like Michael Douglas, who broke out in the industry thanks to a series of energetic, scene-stealing performances in films like Wall Street and Falling Down. While Douglas appeared in many erotic thrillers throughout the 1990s, he faced a fork in his career when the genre grew less popular in the subsequent decades. However, taking a chance on a smaller project can often be advantageous, as Douglas gave one of his greatest performances in the heartfelt literary dramedy Wonder Boys.

Old 97’s Never Put Out an Album as a ‘Cash Grab.’ But Rhett Miller Says It Crossed His Mind
Image
If you wonder what motivates a band after three decades together, ask the Old 97’s. “It feels so unlikely that we’re here, in this moment, in our career and in our lives, and we’ve built something that’s really pretty unimpeachable,” Rhett Miller tells me. We’re sitting in his office — the basement room in his Hudson Valley, New York, home where he writes, seeks inspiration, and often streams solo shows online. “I don’t want to fuck it up.”

The Old 97’s are capping off a year...

On ‘American Primitive,’ the Old 97’s Just Want You to Enjoy Life for 41 Minutes
Image
On their latest album, American Primitive, the Old 97’s have sandwiched songs about assessing their life choices and serial monogamy with reminders that the world is a doomed and hopeless place and that if you’ve found even a modicum of joy, then that day is a triumph. On the first track, “Falling Down,” they try to frighten you into gratitude via a caustic surf-rock apocalypse built with tremolo electric and strummed acoustic guitars, as frontman Rhett Miller sings, “You’ve got to dance like the world is falling down around you — because it is.

8mm (1999) – The Test of Time
Image
I am of that age that still thinks the 80s was 30 years ago and that the 90s just happened. Strange as that logic is, there’s nothing like movie anniversaries to pull me back into reality. Last episode we looked at In the Mouth of Madness and its impact now going strong 30 years later. That flick though, like most of John Carpenter’s catalogue, was something that was already out when I started my movie journey. I had already seen it on VHS and on TV from time to time which puts it in another category altogether. Move ahead just 5 short years to 1999, one of the greatest years in cinema history, and we start getting that 25 years of existence that puts that nice existential crisis right into my gut. Today we are going to look at one of those movies that probably isn’t considered a traditional horror movie but is absolutely horrific in nature.

Smt & Persona: A Devil Summoning Anime Guide
Image
The Shin Megami Tensei games have become some of the world’s biggest and most popular RPG series of all time. Standing alongside the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy franchises, Shin Megami Tensei has proven itself to be an incredibly successful and long-lasting series, spawning multiple spin-offs, sequels, and cross-media expansions over the years. With three major series to its name with multiple titles attributed to each, plus over 20 spin-off titles, the Shin Megami Tensei series is simply massive.

It would be only natural for the series to enjoy various anime and manga adaptations over the years. Existing across many of the Shin Megami Tensei titles, the many animated films, OVAs, and anime series have all helped to broaden and expand the worlds of their respective games. With so many having been released over the years, it can be easy to overlook a few that may have fallen through the cracks.

Old 97’s Celebrate Survival in New Song ‘Where the Road Goes’ With Peter Buck
Image
Rhett Miller bums a ride in the back of a pickup and receives the signs of his past and future in the video for “Where the Road Goes,” the Old 97’s’ new song that celebrates the band’s more than 30 years of longevity.

While Miller sings about various highs and lows of life and career (“from the bottom of a bottle to the palazzo/who knows where the road goes”), he sees the number 97 everywhere — on a highway sign, above a gas station — and also a ramshackle marquee announcing American Primitive,...

The Best Seasons of ‘Survivor,’ Ranked
Image

Outwit, outplay, outlast. The basic formula for competing on “Survivor” hasn’t changed since the reality series made its debut on May 31, 2000. Contestants continue to be divided into tribes and forced to form a new society as they adapt to their physical and social surroundings. Players still have to compete in challenges, build their social game and face the elements and hear host Jeff Probst yell his signature phrases like “You gotta dig deep!” and “Wanna know what you’re playing for?” — and they still have to look into his eyes while he utters the dreaded phrase “The tribe has spoken.”

While the essential gameplay of “Survivor” hasn’t changed throughout 44 seasons played over 23 years, the game certainly has evolved. A myriad of new twists and advantages, the 39-day format shortened to 26 days, and the evolution of the contestants themselves have led to the long-running series having...

The Dire Wolf: Doom director Andrzej Bartkowiak takes the helm of supernatural thriller
Image
Andrzej Bartkowiak got his start in the entertainment industry working as a cinematographer, working on such films as Terms of Endearment, Prizzi’s Honor, Twins, Falling Down, Speed, Species, Dante’s Peak, The Devil’s Advocate, U.S. Marshals, Lethal Weapon 4, Thirteen Days, and Trespass. But back at the turn of the century he also got into directing, working mainly in the action genre: Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Maximum Impact, Dead Reckoning. His most well-known movie, for better or worse, may be the action horror video game adaptation Doom. Now Deadline has announced that Bartkowiak is treading back into horror territory, as he has signed on to direct the supernatural thriller The Dire Wolf.

Coming our way from Steelyard Pictures, The Dire Wolf has a screenplay written by Ry Cook and is expected to start filming in New Mexico soon, aiming for a 2024 release.

Final Sparklehorse Album, Bird Machine, Receives Posthumous Release: Stream
Image
The estate of Sparklehorse, the indie rock project of the late singer-songwriter Mark Linkous, has unveiled a posthumous new album called Bird Machine. The LP arrives today, September 8th via Anti- Records.

Linkous began working on his fifth Sparklehorse album with Steve Albini in 2009. He tragically died by suicide the following year, but he left behind handwritten notes featuring Bird Machine’s title and tracklist — and according to his brother Matt and sister-in-law Melissa, songs that were already close to completion.

The quality of the songs helped Matt and Melissa — who have worked as Linkous’ archivists since his death — decide to finish and release Bird Machine, though Matt called it the hardest choice he’s ever made. “It’s difficult making a choice about someone else’s art, even if you’ve known them all your life and worked with them, even if they were your brother and best friend,...

Wtf Happened to Batman Forever?
Image
Those of us that were alive in 1989 can attest that Batmania had taken over. Warner Brothers’ marketing machine was working overtime to make sure that the bat symbol was everywhere. It’s no wonder that when the film came out, it was a giant hit grossing over $400 million dollars. Adjusted to 2023 rates, that is just over $1 billion dollars. When it came time for a sequel, the team got back together again and put out another home run although it would bring in a little bit less at the box office.

That was okay though as this time Warner Brothers had prepared to push the movie with all sorts of merchandise. Just about any type of clothing you could think of had a bat symbol on it. When it came time to make a third film, that’s when it all seemed to fall apart. Tim Burton had a...

10 Great Directors With Terrible First Movies
Image
Even some great directors have terrible debut movies, as proven by a look back at the less impressive films of a few illustrious filmmakers. Everyone has to start somewhere. Even future Hollywood superstar Sylvester Stallone began his career with a role in the adult movie The Party at Kitty and Stud’s. At the same time, directors can often have an even more challenging time breaking into the industry. Wes Craven and Sean S. Cunningham, who eventually helped invent the slasher sub-genre with A Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday the 13th, first met while working together on an adult movie.

However, while these inauspicious debuts might have been less than family-friendly, they weren’t necessarily bad movies. The same cannot be said for the first onscreen efforts of many great directors. While some filmmakers started strong, plenty of great directors have made terrible debut movies. Like movie actors who starred in forgotten TV shows,...

Image
Frederic Forrest, who earned critical acclaim opposite Bette Midler in The Rose and collaborated with Francis Ford Coppola, has died. He was 86.

For both performances Forrest was recognized by the National Society of Film Critics as that year’s Best Supporting Actor.

Bette Midler took to Twitter to pay tribute to her co-star, saying Frederic Forrest was a “remarkable actor” and “brilliant human being.”

The Most Controversial Movie Characters of the 1990s
Image
History ended in the 1990s, at least according to a famous essay by American political scientist Francis Fukuyama. Under his inflammatory headline, Fukuyama argues that the end of the Cold War and the establishment of the United States as the world’s sole global power pole meant that liberal democracies have become the ultimate form of government. As if to prove the argument correct, the US and the UK entered a period of governmental peace and capitalist expansion.

However, those of us who actually lived through the 90s know that the decade wasn’t nearly as rosy as some predicted (or recall). Against the picture of ascendancy painted by Bill Clinton and, eventually, Tony Blair, pop culture reflected the fragmented state of actual lives, and we ended up with some of the most controversial movies of all time.

In addition to the big breakthroughs of the decade, such as Quentin Tarantino...

Michael Douglas recalls how 'Basic Instinct' sex scenes shocked even the French
Image
Paris, May 17 (Ians) By modern standards, Paul Verhoevens 1992 sex noir drama Basic Instinct might not seem that scandalous, but it was a much different story when it first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Michael Douglas, the films male star, said on Wednesday, reports Variety

"Seeing a lot of those sex scenes on the Grand Palais’ huge screen, it was a little overwhelming for a lot of people. We had a very quiet dinner afterwards, everyone was sort of digesting it," Douglas recalled (the cast included Sharon Stone and Jeanne Tripplehorn).

He was at the festival ahead of receiving the Honorary Palm d’Or as a salute to his "brilliant career and commitment to cinema".

‘Basic Instinct’, notes ‘Variety’, followed a weary homicide detective (Douglas) investigating a successful crime writer (Stone). The film was initially given an Nc-17 rating, but was downgraded to an R after studio lobbying.

Michael Douglas Says ‘Basic Instinct’ Sex Scenes Scandalized Cannes: ‘It Was a Little Overwhelming’
Image
By modern standards, Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 sex noir “Basic Instinct” might not seem that scandalous. It was a much different story when the film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, star Michael Douglas said.

Considered genre-defining or high camp depending on who you ask, Douglas said the project was “unique, even for France,” during a conversation in Cannes on Wednesday.

“Seeing a lot of those sex scenes on the Grand Palais’ huge screen, it was a little overwhelming for a lot of people. We had a very quiet dinner afterwards, everyone was sort of digesting it,” he remembered (the cast included Sharon Stone and Jeanne Tripplehorn).

Cannes to bestow Honorary Palme d'Or upon Michael Douglas
Image
Paris, May 3 (Ians) Multiple award-winning actor Michael Douglas will receive the Honorary Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, reports ‘Variety’.

Cannes revealed that the ‘Basic Instinct’ star will return to the Croisette this month for the festival — and will be honoured as part of the May 16 opening ceremony.

Douglas’s first time in Cannes was the 32nd edition of the festival in 1979, with James Bridges’ disaster thriller movie ‘The China Syndrome’, adds ‘Variety’.

He returned for ‘Basic Instinct’ in 1992 and again in 1993 for ‘Falling Down’. He was most recently in Cannes for Steven Soderbergh’s 2013 movie, ‘Behind the Candelabra’, where he played the pianist-singer Liberace.

“It is always a breath of fresh air to be at Cannes, which has long provided a wonderful platform for bold creators, artistic audacities and excellence in storytelling,” Douglas said in a statement, quoted by ‘Variety’.

Douglas’ first venture as a producer,...
