Frasier star Kelsey Grammer made his debut as Beast in X-Men 3, aka X-Men: The Last Stand, before returning to provide the voice and motion capture for a fully CGI version of the character in The Marvels many years later.
In The Marvels' stinger, Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) wakes up in a medical lab after getting trapped in an alternate reality following her battle with Dar-Benn to find her late mother, Maria (Lashana Lynch), by her side. Rambeau is overcome with joy, but Maria - who is actually this world's Binary - has no idea who she is.
As Monica's confusion grows, a familiar voice asks "how's our patient," and a comic-accurate, blue-furred Hank McCoy enters the room.
There were rumors that Grammer was set to return as the fan-favorite X-Man in Avengers: Doomsday, which were confirmed during Marvel Studios' recent cast announcement. While appearing as a guest on The Jamie Kern Lima Show,...

In 1997, both "The Simpsons" and "Frasier" were at the height of their powers. The former had already been on the air for seven seasons but was arguably at the apex of what is now recognized as the golden age of "The Simpsons." (Even the show's current writers know they can't compete with classic "Simpsons.") Meanwhile, "Frasier" was in its fifth season and had similarly proven to be remarkably consistent. Both shows were two of the smartest and funniest on TV, and with "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer having already guest-starred on "The Simpsons" a full five times, it was only right that the animated series pay full tribute to one of the only shows on TV that could claim to be on an equal level.
This tribute came with season 8, episode 16, "Brother from Another Series." Debuting in February 1997, the episode saw Sideshow Bob (Grammer) released from prison after having been arrested in "Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming,...

NBC is celebrating 100 years on the airwaves with a variety special spectacular.
The announcement was made by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler — who have both been associated with NBC for over two decades — during the NBCUniversal upfront presentation to advertisers on Monday at Radio City Music Hall.
“Hosted by a mix of legendary NBC alumni and today’s biggest stars, the night will be filled with memorable music performances, comedy tributes, behind the scenes stories and surprise reunions,” Fey said. “You’ll be hearing more soon, but I can guarantee this — because it’s twice the age of ‘SNL,’ it’s going to be twice as long as the ‘SNL’ anniversary special. That’s right, six hours of a fun decade-by-decade look back.”
No premiere date or further information was provided as to who would be appearing in the special. Some of the biggest shows in NBC history do include “Saturday Night Live,...

The TV upfronts have a long and colorful history, rooted in grainy images of network executives strategically moving shows around an oversized scheduling board, trying to parry moves by other programmers in the equivalent of a high-stakes chess match.
Today, the strategy is less a cerebral cat-and-mouse game of positioning those pieces than a WWE-style free for all, where programmers try to assemble cohesive lineups but can’t begin to plan how to counter competition that’s coming at them on a multitude of fronts.
Billions of dollars in advance commitments still hang in the balance, with networks and now streaming services seeking to impress media buyers and garner their share of the advertising pie. While sellers still dress to impress, from flying in talent to hosting parties, the Trump economy has cast a shroud over this year’s festivities, stoking fears companies will cut back on spending amid looming recession anxiety.

Unfortunately, it's the season for television show cancellations, and we're going to start hearing about a lot of them. The broadcast networks will be pruning their lineups to make way for the new fall schedules, a process that has already begun. But over in the streaming world, that process happens year round, not just in May. So far, there have been a number of cancellations in 2025.
It's not all bad news, though. Plenty of streaming shows have already been renewed for new seasons this year, like Severance, Running Point, The Studio, School Spirits, Paradise, and more. Many streaming favorites are still awaiting word on their fates, but for some unlucky shows, their fates have already been decided... and it's not good news.
While there are many more cancellations worth getting heated over, like Prime Video's Clean Slate and Apple TV+'s Mythic Quest, these four cancellations were some of the...

Nostalgia is not, inherently, a bad thing. Classic films like Federico Fellini's "L'Avventura," George Lucas' "American Graffiti," and Richard Linklater's "Dazed and Confused" pine away for carefree youth, but they're also careful to acknowledge that the end of the party is on the horizon. Those tales are told from a place of melancholy remove. To quote Thomas Wolfe, "Going back home is a real boneheaded idea."
But in our glutted age of entertainment, where the competition for eyeballs is fierce, the old-school networks believe that one of their programming strengths is viewers' wistfulness for a simpler time, when there were three or four major broadcast entities providing the lion's share of original content. ABC, NBC, CBS and the 1980s party crasher Fox have their work cut out for them in 2025. They're held to conservative content standards and archaic scheduling strictures. Kelsey Grammer is primarily known for making TV comedies, with a specialization in farcical dinner parties. But the Frasier star recently penned a very serious, very personal, book about his late sister Karen Grammer, who was tragically kidnapped, raped and murdered in 1975. Karen: A Brother Remembers is also very much also about Grammer’s efforts to cope with grief and trauma, which for a time involved “too much drinking and drug abuse."
Seemingly, a big part of his healing process was writing this earnest memoir, and one of the key moments in the book is when Grammer connects with his sister’s boyfriend from that time. After learning his name from the police report, Grammer meets with a man named John, who it turns out was the reason that Karen Grammer initially traveled to Colorado where the tragedy occurred.

Frasier star Kelsey Grammer reflected on the murder of his sister, Karen Grammer, in his new book, Karen: A Brother Remembers, which features graphic details of her murder.
Grammer was initially hesitant about sharing the brutal crime in the memoir, but eventually decided it was “beneficial” to share the event. “It is ammunition to keep [convicted killer] Freddie Glenn in jail,” he told People, Glenn, who raped and killed Karen in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is currently serving a life sentence.
On June 30, 1975, Karen was approached by three men outside the Red Lobster where she worked while waiting for a co-worker. Glenn and his two accomplices had initially planned to rob the restaurant, but demanded that Karen go with them. They had tied her up and taken her into their car, where she was brought to an apartment and repeatedly assaulted. Karen was eventually driven to an alley where Glenn stabbed her 42 times.

It was around this time, just three years ago, that rumblings about the Frasier reboot headed for Paramount+ began to turn up the volume. Now, just two seasons later, the talk of the series has completely died down following itscancellation earlier this year. And yet, Kelsey Grammer and the rest of the folks behind the revival series say they had plenty of tricks up their sleeves that would have made the next season the best one yet. With multiple favorites from the original series and its flagship, Cheers, popping by, audiences were left wondering if one of these surprises would have seen a reunion between Grammer’s titular psychiatrist and his old friend and bar owner, Ted Danson’s Sam Malone.

All seems to be well between Cheers co-stars Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer after the acting legends buried their long-running dispute in multiple interviews. However, the wait for an on-screen reunion lingers on, with Danson revealing why he opted not to appear in Grammer's now-canceled Frasier reboot.
Speaking on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff Podcast, Danson explained why he decided against returning as Sam Malone in the modern-day version of the beloved sitcom. According to the A Man on the Inside star, his decision was due to doubts over whether he could play an older Malone. "I didn't know how to ... how the f**k do you play Sam Malone in his 60s or now 70s?" he said. "It's amusing to be an aging adolescent when you're in your 30s [or] 40s, but not when you're in your 70s. So, I thought, I don't know how to do that."
"I would have felt at sea.

Ted Danson opens up about why he didn't reprise his iconic role as Sam Malone for the Frasierreboot. Even though Kelsey Grammer returned as Dr. Frasier Crane for the short-lived Frasier revival on Paramount+, the series was often dinged for one glaring omission. Despite how Dr. Crane returns to Boston, he never visits the unforgettable bar from Cheers. He also isn't visited by any of his old Bostonian friends when he returns to the city to reconnect with his son.
During an appearance on the Howie Mandel Does Stuffpodcast (via People), Danson gets candid about why he never cameoed as Sam Malone in the Frasier reboot and said that he wouldn't know how to portray a version of Malone that was in his 70s, and explained why the portrayal would have felt different. In the quote below, the two-time Emmy winner also makes clear that his absence from the reboot...

Video games based on TV shows are nothing new, but as you might expect, the subcategory of video games based on sitcoms is quite sparse. There was the mess of a video game adaptation that was "The Adventures of Gilligan's Island," which immediately advertises its flaws with that awkward, oddly-phrased title. We also had a video game based on "The Office," which according to IMDb is still the best sitcom of all time. But otherwise, developers have mostly stuck to properties that more obviously lend themselves to a video game adaptation. This is probably why we never got an official "Frasier" video game.
Even the most popular sitcom of the 1990s, "Friends," only ever got a trivia game, so Dr. Crane and his hifalutin antics were never really in with a chance. The Kelsey Grammer-led sitcom ran for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004 and followed the titular psychiatrist as he navigated his family,...

Kelsey Grammer, aka Beast from X-Menand the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, may be a successful actor but he's had an astoundingly tragic life. His father was shot and killed when he was a teenager, and his half-brother was killed in a suspected shark attack while scuba-diving in 1980. In another heartbreaking family tragedy, his sister Karen was raped and murdered, her life cut short at just 18 years old.
Grammer has now released a book called Karen: A Brother Remembers, all about the woman Karen was and all the things that were cruelly taken from her. It was his way of trying to put the past to rest after years of mourning. “For a long time, the grief was so dominant that I couldn’t access happiness,” the actor told People. "The book helped me get to a new place with that.”
Karen was found dead outside a trailer after being stabbed multiple times by rapist Freddie Glenn.

Frasier star Kelsey Grammer is opening up about the murder of his sister, Karen Grammer, almost 50 years ago, and how he dealt with the grief while making his way in Hollywood. Speaking to ABC News’ Diane Sawyer about his new book, Karen: A Brother Remembers, available May 6, the Cheers alum confessed to battling cocaine and alcohol addiction at the height of his television career as he dealt with the grief of his sister’s death. “It’s remarkable that I survived some of that,” he said. “I might be asleep on one of the benches on the Cheers set, and then when it was my turn, I’d just stand up and go do it.” Karen was kidnapped and murdered in 1975 when she was 18 years old. She was living in Colorado at the time when several men abducted her from the restaurant where she worked. The police stated that the...

The Frasierrevival may have been cancelled at Paramount+, but if it finds a new home, Frasier Crane may just get a visit from his long-lost brother. David Hyde Pierce, who played Niles Crane on all eleven seasons of Frasier's original run, is open to a guest appearance on the series. Varietyreports that although Pierce turned down a regular role on the series, he'd be happy to drop in on Frasier's new Boston abode.
The series, which debuted in 2023 and ran for two seasons before Paramount+ cancelled it earlier this year, had Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) relocate to Boston to be closer to his firefighter son, Frederick (Jack Cutmore-Scott), in the wake of his father Martin's death. Several Frasier supporting and recurring characters have made appearances on the series, including Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin), Lilith Sternin (Bebe Neuwirth), Bob "Bulldog" Briscoe (Dan Butler), and Bebe Glazer (Harriet Sansom Harris), but Niles, who...

Based on the cheesy-looking promotional videos for Pirates! The Penzance Musical, you’d think David Hyde Pierce could have chosen a better vehicle for his theatrical talents. It’s unclear what his options were, but donning massive mutton chops on Broadway must have sounded better than reprising his role as Niles in the Frasier reboot.

Since he’d already made that decision, why reverse it? Sure, Kelsey Grammer was back in, but Pierce wasn’t worried about hurting his old co-star’s feelings. “I did not think it would hinge on my participation.

Rather than launching yet another terrible sitcom with the exact same premise, Kelsey Grammer seems intent on finding a new home for the recently-canceled Frasier reboot. Ideally one that will still pay him $2 million an episode.
While that may sound like a daunting task, Grammer has suggested that he has an ace up his sleeve: Sam “Mayday” Malone.
When Grammer and Ted Danson reunited for an episode of Danson’s podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, the host revealed that he didn’t make many guest appearances on Frasier because it “scared the shit out” of him. “We may chat about that again. I think you’d be really safe (on the new Frasier),” Grammer replied.
“We will. I would love that,” Danson stressed.
While this interaction was seemingly edited out of the audio podcast, it was included in the episode’s YouTube video.

We now have our first look at the Malcolm in the Middle revival happening at Disney+ thanks to star Frankie Muniz, and it doesn't look like anyone's aged a day since the show went off the air nearly 20 years ago. Anyone who grew up on '90s sitcoms will surely have envisioned themselves living in Frasier's high-end downtown Seattle condo. Dr. Crane's home at the Elliot Bay Towers was pure fantasy, with its completely unrealistic view of the Space Needle and tastefully decorated interior that a radio psychiatrist almost certainly couldn't afford. How much does Frasier's apartment actually cost? Well, people have actually tried to figure this out, and rough estimates put the three-bed at roughly $1.5 million in 1993 — the year "Frasier" debuted on NBC. That's according to real estate brokers' best guesses and the fact we know Frasier's apartment cost the show's set decorators around half a million real-world dollars to make.
For most of us, then, occupying such an apartment will always remain a distant dream. In a strange way, that's part of the appeal of "Frasier," in that the show immersed us in a world that we'd never otherwise have known.

Frasier Crane might never learn what to do with those tossed salads and scrambled eggs at this point. The iconic sitcom character returned in 2023, about 30 years since the original Frasier's premiere on NBC and nearly 20 since its ending, for a Paramount+ revival series.
Unfortunately, the revival wasn't able to match the success of its Emmy-winning predecessor and was canceled after two seasons. But even though the series was axed, that didn't mean it was necessarily the end of the road.
Kelsey Grammer was confident at the time of the revival's cancellation that he and CBS Studios, the show's production company, would be able to shop the series to other networks and streamers to find a fruitful new home.
Frasier still hasn't found a new streaming home
Since Grammer last spoke nearly two months ago about shopping Frasier and getting the sitcom saved for season 3, there hasn't been much movement. Well,...

Part of what made "Seinfeld" so fresh and original was that it was unlike any other sitcom that had aired on television before. Most of the plots throughout its stellar nine season run could veer into the realm of outlandish absurdity, but there would often be this human commonality at the center of their conception, like someone double dipping a chip at a party or trying to find your car in the parking garage. NBC had the nerve to give the greenlight to a story about a bet involving masturbation, and from the moment it aired, the vernacular introduced in "The Contest" has become a common turn of phrase. But sometimes, it's the little things that make for a great episode.
In the season 8 episode, "The Muffin Tops," everyone on the "Seinfeld" crew is having their own separate predicament. Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) struggles with an itchy chest after shaving to appease his girlfriend,...

'90s sitcoms knew how to do apartment sets right. To this day, fans of "Friends" still wonder how Monica could afford that gigantic New York abode, despite the show's attempts to explain it with "rent control." The only apartment nicer than the legendary purple two-bed from "Friends," however, was surely Frasier's luxury Seattle high-rise condo.
At least in the case of "Frasier," we could imagine how a radio psychiatrist with a significant public profile might afford an impressive (and entirely unrealistic) view of the Space Needle. The doctor's home remains a truly iconic piece of '90s pop culture and has even sparked the birth of an aesthetic known online as "Frasurbane" — think wood-panelled academia-meets-Barnes & Noble coffee house. Not only was Frasier's expansive living room instantly recognizable for its view of the Emerald City and post-modern design elements, there were little features spread throughout that made it truly memorable,...

As "Seinfeld" drew to a close during its ninth and final season, fans of the uproarious sitcom created by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David had a hard time accepting that there would be no further squabbling adventures in this rich and deeply petty universe again. Surely, there were spinoffs in development. Maybe a movie! An animated series?
If NBC had decided to keep the "Seinfeld" money train chugging in 1998, it could've drawn from a deep bench of recurring characters that might've been able to carry their own series. There was also the possibility of spinning off a show for one of the four leads, but no one seemed interested in going the "Frasier" route (which proved disastrous for Matt LeBlanc six years later when he segued from "Friends" to the weirdly misconceived "Joey"). Instead, as we all know, when "Seinfeld" ended, all of its characters ceased to be. It's unlikely...

The Trump administration’s controversial, dubiously-calculated new global tariffs have tanked the stock market, led to mass layoffs and sparked concerns over rising inflation. But the big question is: Will it also impact people’s ability to enjoy reruns of ‘90s sitcoms?
This week’s announcement from the White House included a new 10-percent tariff on “nearly all” U.K. goods imported into the U.S., which is bad news for any Americans who just can’t get enough Marmite. And while the U.K. government is preparing to hit back with their own retaliatory tariffs, as reported by Metro, the U.K.’s Channel 4 quickly announced their own action plan.
“As retaliation for the Tariffs we will now be showing any American made TV show without the last five minutes,” the channel posted on social media, adding, “Good luck finding out how Frasier got out of that one.”

Dermot Mulroney has found himself a new home on Chicago Fire, as Chief Dom Pascal, but during a recent interview with MovieWeb’s George Edelman the actor reflected on some of the other shows he has been part of, and whether he would consider returning to any of them.
With nostalgic resurrections being a big thing right now, with shows like Frasier, Buffy, and more getting belated returns, Mulroney singled out one show that he would have loved to return to, but now seems to have missed his chance. He said:
“I’ve collected a couple of things that I wish would come back, but that’s only since television because movies are movies so you would have to go a prequel or a sequel and that’s like a different thing. But if you’ve got a part in a show and they didn’t kill you yet…I...

One of the most obnoxious sitcom tropes is when a show becomes popular enough that celebrities begin appearing on it as themselves. Now, some shows have made it work. Insane guest stars are The Simpsons thing, for example. And Curb Your Enthusiasm is about a guy in show business, so celebrities playing themselves makes total sense. But when a show is about ordinary people yet gigantic household names keep showing up on their doorstep the reality of that world is blown apart.
There have, however, been a handful of times when a celebrity played themselves on a sitcom and actually pulled it off. These are the top five…
5 Marisa Tomei on ‘Seinfeld’
Tomei’s appearance on Seinfeld worked out of sheer absurdity alone. The very idea that the pathetic George Costanza (Jason Alexander) would be exactly her type is funny on its own, but when George and Marisa meet, the comedy is sublime.

TV is firmly in its reboot, revival, and reunion era. Shows such as Frasier and Sex and the City have been revisited, with varying degrees of success. Some of these exploits, like the newsmaking Fresh Prince reunion, have added valuable perspective to the original show.
But with all the nostalgia floating around Hollywood, it’s surprising that HBO’s The Wire, a prescient, innovative chronicle of urban blight in America, told through intersecting characters in Baltimore, hasn’t had a large-scale reunion. In the 23 years since the show’s debut,...

A new show is burning up the Nielsen streaming charts — and it aired its last episode almost fifty years ago. Gunsmoke, the longest-running Western TV show in history, has just ridden on to the Acquired streaming charts, landing at #8. The series, which starred James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon, is currently streaming on Paramount+ and Peacock.
It's no surprise to see a Western on the streaming charts: shows like Yellowstoneand 1923 have been solid successes for Paramount+. However, even on Nielsen's list of Acquired streaming shows, which includes shows that premiered on linear TV before making their way to streaming, Gunsmoke stands out. It's up there with shows like NCIS, The Big Bang Theory, and Bob's Burgers — venerable series all, but they all made their debuts this century. Not so for Gunsmoke, which aired its first episode on CBS in 1955. According to Nielsen, this has been a long time coming,...

After repeatedly making headlines for clinging to the faint hope that the Frasier reboot will somehow be un-canceled, Kelsey Grammer is in the news again — not because his TV show has been picked up by another network, but because he’s somehow managed to piss off an entire town in the U.K.
According to The Independent, Grammer recently purchased a “historic 200-year-old Somerset cottage” in order to be closer to his wife’s family. But apparently, the charming Portishead home wasn’t quite good enough for the Down Periscope star. He reportedly applied for approval to build an extension onto the house, but his request was denied. Per The Daily Mail, the North Somerset Council told Grammer that the extension, which would have nearly doubled the structure’s floorspace, was “too big” and “would harm the character and appearance of the property.” They also cited safety concerns involving a...

For a long time, you could tell just how successful a TV show was based on the number of spin-offs it inspired. That concept is as true now as it was decades ago, what with the vast amount of "NCIS" and Dick Wolf spin-offs that litter the network airways year after year. But while spin-offs can be an easy sign of whether or not a series is popular, the spin-offs themselves aren't always successful, even when it comes to procedurals like cop dramas and mysteries. Indeed, just because viewers will always flock to crime dramas doesn't mean that every one of those shows is guaranteed to be a hit. If you need an example, simply look at the short-lived spin-off of one of the most beloved TV series of all time.

Oddly, one of the greatest sitcoms of all time is actually a spinoff of another classic sitcom. Frasier, a spinoff of Cheers, premiered in 1993 and was an instant hit with audiences. Frasier introduced viewers to a new supporting cast, setting, and brand-new, timeless stories.
To say that Frasier has produced several iconic and nearly perfect television episodes would be an understatement. The hilarious adventures of radiotherapist Frasier Crane, his brother Niles, his father Martin, Martin's nurse and close friend Daphne and Frasier's assistant Roz have aged like the fine wines Frasier enjoys on the show.
Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on March 26, 2025: Paramount+ has canceled the Frasier revival after only two seasons, but hope isn't lost yet. Kelsey Grammer remains confident the series can continue on another streaming service. As fans anxiously await news on the show's future, they can revisit some of the best episodes in its historic run.

Sitcoms have a harder time than ever to really catch on to what the public wants. It's sort of a genre stable that viewers need a few seasons to get to know the characters and storylines they'll be enjoying. Unfortunately, the market is so competitive today that it's almost impossible for many new sitcoms to survive past one season. Many fresh and hilarious comedy shows have fallen by the wayside only because of low viewership, leading to a show's eventual premature cancelation. On top of that, no other sitcoms have it harder than the ones on network television, such as Fox's brand-new sitcom Going Dutch.
Going Dutch was created by Joel Church-Cooper and stars Denis Leary alongside a massive cast of hilarious characters in a show that seemingly fits Leary's charismatic and brash personality to a T. The show premiered right after the New Year on January 2, 2025, and was met with positive reviews.

For over a decade, from 1993 to 2024, Frasier reigned as one of television’s most acclaimed sitcoms in both the USA and the UK. A spin-off of Cheers, starring Kelsey Grammer, the series followed psychiatrist-turned-radio host Frasier Niles as he navigated life in Seattle. Even now, the series still has a dedicated audience, and there are plenty of fans who fondly remember its hilarious moments.

Frasier has left the building – and by building, we mean Paramount+. Earlier this year, the streamer decided that they wouldn’t be picking up the Frasier reboot for a third season, meaning that viewers hoping to enjoy the hijinks of Dr. Frasier Crane will have to get by with the 11 seasons of the original show, and the nine seasons of Cheers that he was part of.
But despite the fact that Frasier 2.0 was canceled, its star, Kelsey Grammer, seems oddly optimistic about the show’s future. Immediately after Paramount+’s decision was announced, sources claimed that the reboot was being shopped around to other platforms and recently, Grammer revealed that he feels “very positive” about Frasier finding “a better home.”
Grammer also suggested that, were the show to return, Sam Malone could be a part of it, since Grammer and Ted Danson are no longer on bad terms. Of course,...

In an industry where franchising is the name of the game, there's money to be had in branching off from a popular main series with a spin-off show. With 12 seasons and 279 episodes under its belt, it was all but inevitable that "The Big Bang Theory" would secure a spin-off of its own, but comedy can be especially tricky. Other long-running shows had spin-offs like "Joey" or "That '80s Show" that barely mustered enough energy to last a season or two. But on the other end of that, "Frasier" is just as vital to "Cheers" as "The Jeffersons" is to "All in the Family" (possibly even more so).
Outside of the central group of Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Howard (Simon Helberg), Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), and Amy (Mayim Bialik), the remaining side characters on "The Big Bang Theory" largely don't have any kind of...

The 75th Ace Eddie Awards recognized achievements in film and television editing on Friday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall. “Emilia Pérez,” “Wicked” and “The Wild Robot” were the top film winners at the 75th Ace Eddie Awards, which took place on Friday evening at UCLA’s Royce Hall, nearly two weeks after the Oscars and nearly two months after the Eddies’ original date of Jan. 18. The ceremony held by the American Cinema Editors was postponed in January due to the wildfires that raged through the L.A. metro area earlier this year.
Wins by Juliette Welfling for “Emilia Pérez” and Myron Kerstein for “Wicked” stood in contrast to the outcome at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, when Sean Baker won film editing for “Anora.” Last year, “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” won at the Eddies, and “Oppenheimer” went on to win the Oscar. Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” the embattled musical crime thriller about gender confirmation, was the surprise Feature Dramatic Editing winner, Friday night at the 75th annual Ace Eddie Awards (held at UCLA’s Royce Hall).
Besting such contenders as “Conclave” and “Dune: Part Two,” “Emilia Pérez” editor Juliette Welfling cut against the start and stop rhythms of traditional musicals with sequences that flowed naturally from dialogue to musical moments in this operatic fever dream, starring Best Supporting Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña and controversial Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón.
In addition, Jon M. Chu’s maximalist “Wicked” musical beat out Sean Baker’s Oscar-winning “Anora” in the comedy category. Editor Myron Kerstein excelled at handling the tonal shifts and blending different genres to explore the volatile friendship between Elphaba/the Wicked Witch (Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda/Glinda the Good Witch (Oscar-nominated Ariana Grande).
