Legendary film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert had pretty mixed opinions when it came to movies based on Saturday Night Live sketches. They gave Wayne’s World two thumbs up, but called Coneheads one of the worst films of 1993. And for some reason they were massive fans of Stuart Saves His Family? Really?
But the duo’s harshest SNL criticisms, oddly enough, happened during an episode of SNL.
Siskel and Ebert appeared in the very first episode of the Lorne Michaels-less eighth season. The hook? They would be reviewing the season premiere of SNL — as in the one that was in the middle of airing. As Siskel noted during the sketch, it was “history’s first live review of a television show still in progress,” which is a pretty clever meta joke. It arguably worked far better than the episode’s central, highly-irregular conceit: that host Chevy Chase was...

Over the weekend, the Chicago International Film Festival and Second City honored Mike Myers with a “Career Achievement Award,” in recognition of his work in beloved movies such as Wayne’s World, Austin Powers and Shrek. Thankfully, the event didn’t end with one of the organizers suddenly remembering that The Love Guru exists and attempting to wrestle the award out of Myers’ hands.
The ceremony also included a “lengthy conversation” between Myers and Kids in the Hall’s Dave Foley. The talk touched on a number of different subjects, including Myers’ fears that the studio wouldn’t release Wayne’s World, his fears that the studio wouldn’t release Austin Powers and how Michael Caine couldn’t get Beyoncé’s name right while filming Austin Powers in Goldmember. “He’d just go, ‘Hey, Be-yonts,’” Myers recalled.

Doug Emhoff has seen Andy Samberg’s impersonation of him on Saturday Night Live — and he approves.
The first gentleman stopped by The Jennifer Hudson Show on Tuesday, where he was asked about The Lonely Island frontman’s portrayal of him during the sketch comedy show’s season 50 premiere this past weekend.
“I’ve been watching that show my whole life and to think somebody’s playing me, first of all, it’s just so… wow!” Emhoff told the daytime talk show host. “And then I gotta hand it [to him], Andy Samberg did a good job!”

The 50th season of Saturday Night Live kicked off this weekend, and predictably began with a cold open that featured Maya Rudolph plus a cavalcade of celebrities impersonating prominent political personalities. In addition to Rudolph’s Kamala Harris, we also got Andy Samberg as her husband Doug Emhoff and Jim Gaffigan as Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz, who, to be fair, does have Bhpe (Big Hot Pockets Energy).
The crowd went wild, presumably because the crowd wasn’t comprised of current cast members of SNL desperately vying for screen time.
To cap things off, veteran player Dana Carvey took the stage and showed off his Joe Biden impression. Carvey obviously has a long history of playing presidents on SNL, largely because Lorne Michaels didn’t stubbornly insist on hiring, say, Dan Aykroyd to play George H.W. Bush.

Even if the first season had been its only season, “Saturday Night Live” still would have earned a place in TV history. The series’ original cast, know as “The Not Ready for Prime-Time Players,” launched the careers of John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Garrett Morris, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman. In the almost 50 years since, “SNL” has jumpstarted the careers of many of the greatest comedians of each generation, including Bill Murray (who joined in Season 2), Dana Carvey, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Kristen Wiig, and Tina Fey – just to name a few – and led to films based on sketches from the series, such as “The Blues Brothers” (1980) and “Wayne’s World” (1992).

Abbott and Costello. Laurel and Hardy. Martin and Lewis. Smothers and, you know, the other Smothers. The history of entertainment is filled with beloved comedy duos, whose personalities and performance styles either compliment or clash with each other perfectly. They are the stuff that whimsical legends are made of, and their hallowed halls may need to make room for a brand new iconic double act: Brandy Norwood and Kathryn Hunter.
“The Front Room” is a new horror-comedy from the twin Eggers Brothers, Sam and Max, whose older brother Robert directed the acclaimed horror films “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse.” Max Eggers has a co-writing credit on “The Lighthouse,” a bizarrely funny little nightmare about two horny men losing their minds together on a tiny island in the ocean — “Yer fond of me lobster! Say it! Say it! Say it!” — and it feels like a spiritual cousin to their newest effort.

Wayne’s World is a film that needs no introduction, but will get one anyways. As the maiden voyage for Paramount’s 30-year relationship with Lorne Michaels, we witnessed a beloved yet unidimensional Saturday Night Live sketch adapt into one of the highest grossing films of its decade and solidify it’s legacy as a cultural and comedic juggernaut. Multiple generations have laughed, cried, and hurled, time and time again, for over three decades. But after three decades of anything, change can be scary. That is, unless you have Zoe Lister-Jones and Film Independent sitting in the driver’s seat of that sky blue AMC Pacer with flames on the side. Then it’s not scary at all. It’s party time. It’s excellent.

We’re less than two months away from the release of Saturday Night, the gritty 30 Rock reboot directed by Academy Award nominee Jason Reitman. As the recently-released trailer illustrates, Saturday Night tells the story of how a scrappy young Canuck producer named Lorne Michaels propelled Saturday Night Live to greatness by bucking authority and challenging the established norms of TV comedy, thus changing the world of pop-culture forever!
Hopefully the movie ends with Young Lorne morphing into Old Lorne, à la Saving Private Ryan, sipping white wine as he watches Elon Musk try on Wario mustaches.
Since the film appears to be a fairly glowing portrait of Michaels, the presumptive hero of the story, one might wonder if the longtime SNL boss, himself, had any involvement in the production. After all, Michaels is famous for keeping a pretty tight grip on both his public image and the SNL brand.

Among them are “Weird Al” Yankovic (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story), Tia Carrere (Wayne’s World), Jackie Tohn (Glow), David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer) and The Sklar Brothers (What We Do in the Shadows), as well as Pantera’s longtime collaborators, Breeda Wool (UnREAL) and Sam Littlefield (Batwoman).
The film will also feature performances by Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), Sherry Cola (Joy Ride) and Rob Corddry (The Daily Show), among other celebrity cameos.
Marking the first feature from Pantera’s newly launched Pantera Pictures, dedicated to female-driven stories, the comedy watches as a one-hit former rockstar moves her family to a picturesque town and channels her unfulfilled ambition and rage into the 5th grade science fair, where she ignites a fierce parent rivalry and starts a war.

Almost any search of Josh Hartnett will return a bevy of articles with a headline that is some variation of “Why Josh Hartnett Left Hollywood,” which is fair. It’s a fascinating story about a guy who saw himself as an artist thrust into the spotlight of a teen heartthrob. It’s the rare story of a human choosing a simpler, more purposeful life over ultra-fame.
It’s more than admirable. A great story. But today, in honor of his latest leading role in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap, we’re just here to talk about blood, guts, and Josh Hartnett’s strange relationship with the horror genre.
It all began with The Faculty in 1998. Though Halloween: H20 was released first, he was offered the role of Zeke in The Faculty beforehand and had to work on both simultaneously. This started his career working with Dimension Films and the dreaded Weinsteins.

Jay Leno is known for two things: hosting The Tonight Show and preventing other people from hosting The Tonight Show. Okay, three things if you count repeatedly crashing vintage motor vehicles. The point is, Leno isn’t generally known for being a great actor, even despite the fact that, in his pre-talk show days, he literally starred in a Rush Hour-esque action-comedy with Pat Morita. It wasn’t good.
Leno later admitted that his only starring vehicle, Collision Course, was “terrible” and the clunky process put him off of film acting entirely.
But despite that disastrous experience, Leno was apparently still game to co-star in an upcoming movie. And it’s a drama. About The Beatles. Seriously.

It’s been just over 25 years since the release of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, the movie that continued the adventures of Mike Myers’ cryogenically-frozen ‘60s superspy, while doing its part for the environmental movement by recycling 70 to 80 percent of the jokes from the first movie.
One of the more welcome additions to The Spy Who Shagged Me was Rob Lowe, who stepped in to play the younger version of Dr. Evil’s number two in command: Number 2.
When Lowe sat down for a recent interview with Rich Eisen, naturally his work in the Austin Powers sequel came up, and Lowe was surprisingly poetic when describing the process of working with one of cinema’s most revolting characters. Lowe told Eisen that showing up for work at the Spy Who Shagged Me set was the “polar opposite” of acting in another classic ‘90s comedy, Tommy Boy. While the...

The original Wayne’s World movie “just landed so beautifully,” Dana Carvey claimed on the latest Fly on the Wall podcast with guests Bonnie and Terry Turner. The Turners were writers for several years on Saturday Night Live, as well as screenwriters for Wayne’s World and its sequel Wayne’s World 2. The first film “was a great experience,” agreed Terry.
Part of the reason for the movie’s success, according to Carvey, was its limited number of shooting days and relatively small budget. The problem with the sequel? “We had so much money,” he explained. “They built a set where Garth and Wayne hang out, and it’s just fantastical. It seemed like it was almost a parody of the theme of the first movie.”

Wayne’s World is full of memorable cameos, from Alice Cooper, to Meatloaf, to the T-1000. But perhaps the best of the bunch is Chris Farley as the security guard who randomly provides a conspicuous chunk of exposition outlining where and when famed music producer Frankie “Mr. Big” Sharp will be in the near future.
This info, predictably, comes in very handy when Wayne and Garth later climatically hack into Mr. Big’s TV, which convinces him to sign Cassandra’s band — in the “mega happy ending” at least.
The film’s screenwriters, and Saturday Night Live veterans, Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner recently appeared on the Fly on the Wall podcast with Dana Carvey and David Spade. While chatting about Wayne’s World, the husband and wife team revealed that the funniest joke in the whole scene was essentially a derisive response to a lame studio note.

While most of the "Saturday Night Live" movies born out of sketches from the long-running late night comedy series have been total duds, "Wayne's World" is one of a few that have stood the test of time. Even while having its foot squarely in the culture of the '90s, the comedy inspired by the sketch starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as public access talk show hosts Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar is surprisingly timeless. It has a meta approach that spoofs popular culture and two characters who actually work as genuine buddies outside of their sketch framework. That's why people still love and talk about "Wayne's World" to this day, and even the sequel is a superb follow-up.
One particularly memorable bit from "Wayne's World" comes from one of Wayne's many ambitions in the movie. Along with getting his TV show a wider audience and landing the girl...

Say this for Saturday Night Live — if performers don’t have the goods, they don’t stick around for long. A number of talented comics didn’t get asked back for even a second season, including future stars Sarah Silverman, Jenny Slate and Ben Stiller. Every summer, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites a deluge of new members to join its ranks. Since #OscarsSoWhite back in 2015, the Academy has moved away from its elitist tendencies and toward embracing younger and more diverse artists and executives from all over the world. This year’s invited class is no exception.
If the invitees all accept Academy membership, the total members will number 10,910 and voting members 9,934. And with the addition of the 2024 members, 35 percent of Academy members identify as women, 20 percent of Academy members are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 20 percent of Academy members are from countries or territories outside the U.S.
As usual, a slew of Oscar nominees and winners are gaining admittance to the club (71 Oscar nominees and 19 winners), including actors Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), costume designer Holly Waddington...

The actors, casting directors, costume designers, documentary, executives, makeup artists and hairstylists branches have invited more women than men. The weekend is perfect for hosting a movie night with friends and laughing at a silly yet charming comedy. But what if we offer you a list of must-see comedies with two hilarious leads to make your night even funnier? And we definitely have one.
Here are 5 guilty-pleasure buddy comedies, handpicked by Reddit.
Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Presumably, this movie comes first in this respect, as Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are one of the most iconic movie duos. The story of two goofies who set out on a trip to return a case full of money to its owner is indeed dumb, yet full of laughable gags.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter’s comedy talent shines bright in this hit flick that set up the Bill & Ted franchise. It follows two dim-witted best friends who travel back in time to assemble historical figures for their high school history presentation.

“Let’s face it, I had a bad script,” director Michael Bay said on the commentary track of his debut feature film, Bad Boys. Bay isn’t wrong. Bad Boys relies on buddy comedy tropes already established in 1974’s Freebie and the Bean and 1982’s 48 Hrs., complete with nonsense plot points. “But I had real comic talent in my two stars.” Bay of course means Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Drawn from the popular sitcoms Martin and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Lawrence and Smith saved the movie from the clunky script with their easy chemistry and comic timing.
At one point, however, Bad Boys had two very different stars in mind with a comic chemistry unlike that of Lawrence and Smith.

One of the classic movie tropes of studio comedies, and especially in the 70s and 80s- is the ever-clever “slobs vs snobs” tale. You know, the blue-collar underdog against a preppy, often annoyingly sophisticated social elite. Movies like Revenge of the Nerds, Animal House, Wayne’s World, or Caddyshack make this the crux of their stories and often use multiple characters in each category to drive the shenanigans all the way up. But in some cases, a movie will tell the story with just one slob and one snob- and crank them both to their absolute extremes- and then throw in a heist because… we love that stuff.
In today’s episode of Revisited, we’re going to be talking about 1988’s buddy comedy classic- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This movie stars Steve Martin and (the now retired) Michael Caine as two con artists who make an old western-style bet to run each other out of town.

The first Charles Addams' strip that might be considered a part of the Addams Family canon was published in the pages of the New Yorker on August 6, 1938. In it, a vacuum cleaner salesman stands just inside a large, creepy, obviously haunted mansion, addressing the denizens, a cadaverous vampire woman and a brutish bearded man. The salesman, unperturbed by his grim surroundings offers his sales pitch, declares that no well-appointed home should be without such an appliance.
58 of Addams' 1,300 cartoon strips would feature his oddball Family, a nameless clan of ghouls who cherished horror and death. Throughout the '40s, a central canon of Family members would solidify, and come to include a squat, beastly patriarch, his skeletal wife, their two murderous children, a witchy grandmother, a fecklessly weird bald uncle, and their Frankensteinian live-in butler. In Addams' strips, the Family would talk about how much they loved destructive storms, how...

Law & Order Svu star Mariska Hargitay took a break from solving dark crimes on her hit show when she appeared in The Love Guru. The feature was a lighthearted comedy based on a character created by Mike Myers. Myers and Hargitay would eventually become good friends, which led to Hargitay’s involvement in the film.
But when they met each other for the first time, Hargitay didn’t know what to make of Myers.

Myers’ The Love Guru was based on a character the comedian came up with in the 90s named Guru Pitka. Before the character’s cinematic debut, the Austin Powers star spent much of his time workshopping and refining the persona on the comedy circuit. Hargitay once confided that she became a part of the Guru’s comedic act before the pair had even officially met.

Brian Helgeland's 2001 film "A Knight's Tale" is based on the first of the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, but it has as much to do with 14th-century medieval literature as "Wayne's World." The film features characters singing Queen songs and one of the characters invents the Nike "swoop" as a brand for her armor. The story involves William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) a handsome young cove who aims to win jousting tournaments and be welcomed as one of the king's knights. It's a raucous, lightweight, silly movie that is deeply beloved by a very specific age group, that is: those who were between 15 and 17 in May of 2001.
It also depicted Ledger at the height of his heartthrob powers, as well as Paul Bettany (as Chaucer), Rufus Sewell as the villain, Shannyn Sossamon as Ledger's would-be paramour, and a trio of brilliant comedian sidekicks in Mark Addy, Laura Fraser, and Alan Tudyk.

Saturday Night Live skits have given us some of the funniest and most enjoyable movies of their eras. Ok, there aren’t many – we’re really mostly talking about The Blues Brothers, the Wayne’s World double feature and MacGruber – but what’s there is choice comedy. On the other side, we have crap like It’s Pat, The Ladies Man and Stuart Saves His Family, all proving that just because something works for five minutes doesn’t mean it can sustain 90. Take another recurring skit, Debbie Downer, for another example, who Rachel Dratch turned into a signature character in more than a half-dozen appearances. Thankfully such a movie never happened – something that Dratch is perfectly fine with.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Rachel Dratch recognized that while the character stands as one of her greatest contributions to SNL, she just wouldn’t have the legs to make it on the big screen.

John Carpenter's 1992 film "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" was a departure for the director. Throughout the 1980s, Carpenter directed many notable genre films that affected a direct and guileless style that roped in many fans and critics. His 1980s "hot streak" included "Escape from New York," "The Thing," "Christine," "Starman," and "Big Trouble in Little China." Although his 1987 film "Prince of Darkness" was nonsensical, it has many defenders, and his 1988 film "They Live" is now considered a seminal anti-establishment punk-rock text of the Reagan era.
That streak seems to have ended with "Memoirs," however. Although the film is slick, entertaining, and boasts some excellent special effects, many Carpenter fans felt a little off-put by the director's attempts to helm a comedic Chevy Chase vehicle. In "Memoirs," Chase plays a stock market guy who is accidentally exposed to an invisibility experiment. The film follows his travails as he adjusts to his lack of opacity,...

Here's a lesson for the kids out there: speak your dreams into existence and maybe, just maybe, they'll actually come true. Tragically, those who follow the comedy scene closely know that it's littered with high-profile examples of beloved talent who ended up burning out and leaving us far too soon. This one, however, might end up circling back to the best of silver linings.
Today's news has to do with Chris Farley, the late, great "Saturday Night Live" actor and comedian who passed away at the age of 33 back in 1997. He may not be as well-known a quantity among younger generations, but their older siblings and parents can certainly fill them in on the prolific, scene-stealing theatrics of the man who rose to prominence through "SNL" and subsequently made audiences cry with laughter in movies such as "Wayne's World" and its sequel, "Coneheads," "Airheads," and even an uncredited role in Adam Sandler's "Billy Madison.

Sometimes your entire world can change in a single moment. For a young Tia Carrere’s world became more excellent one trip a local grocery store where the parents of a man who was producing a movie saw her and told her about this movie their son was shooting. This would lead Tia Carrere to land a role in the film Aloha Summer. The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive had a fantastic run from the late ’80s through much of the ’90s. The 16-bit era was the first time gamers got to experience a meaningful console war and while you can debate whether or not it was superior to the Snes, there were so many fantastic games out there worth playing. Gaming was evolving and kids were eating well.
With about a thousand titles in its library, not every Genesis game could be a hit. There were some titles that missed the mark more than others. Presents that ruined birthdays. Rentals that ruined weekends. Trades that ruined friendships. Buyer’s remorse that can stain one’s very soul. Let’s take a second to celebrate the Genesis titles that aspired to be an earl but ended up as lowly as toe jam.

Get your red vest ready: Kristen Wiig is said to be reprising her recurring character The Target Lady in a series of ads for the discount department store.
That’s according to Roger Friedman at Showbiz411, who reports that Wiig and a crew were recently spotted taking over a Target store overnight to shoot the campaign.
Wiig famously portrayed the overzealous Target cashier in ten SNL sketches beginning in 2005. In each of the sketches, she invariably drives her rushed customers crazy as she enthusiastically comments on each of their products as she scans them
Wiig developed the character when she was a part of the Los Angeles improv group The Groundlings and brought it with her to Saturday Night Live, which is what allows her to perform it off the show.

Do you remember the answer to the question, Who is Darkman? If not, Scream Factory invites you to revisit Sam Raimi’s first foray into superhero films with their brand new 4K Ultra HD release of 1990’s Darkman launching February 20th.
After being unable to obtain the rights to The Shadow, Raimi decided to mix traits from other popular crime fighters and classic Universal Monsters and pour them into the base of his own unique and tragic figure, Darkman. And this unique character is one who could disguise themselves as anyone they wanted to be.
With prospects like Bill Paxton and Gary Oldman interested in the lead, Raimi rolled the dice on virtual unknown Liam Neeson for his first ever starring role. Raimi also took a gamble on another longshot, his roommate Frances McDormand for the female lead after Julia Roberts bowed out due to personal reasons and became the Pretty Woman.

After his son’s accidental drug overdose last year, Dana Carvey has finally opened up about his journey after his loss.
After a hiatus from his podcast Fly On The Wall with David Spade, Carvey finally returned to the show explaining that his journey of loss was a private one. While sharing about his grief, he also commented that coming back onto the show would be “healthy” as he recovers from the situation.

Dana Carvey thinks it’s going to be “really cool to laugh” as he returns to his podcast and continues to grieve following the death of his son Dex.
In his first Fly on the Wall podcast episode since last November, comedian and former Saturday Night Live castmember Dana Carvey returned to the mic with his co-host and friend David Spade. The duo took time out to address Carvey’s grief, while also discussing topics like Jo Koy’s Golden Globes gig, including that Taylor Swift joke.
“If you’re listening to our podcast right now, you probably know about my family’s loss,” Carvey said while thanking people for their messages of support. “I thought about this over the holidays and decided to come back to the podcast because I think it’s a long day when you’re not working, and you get in your head.”

Not many horror films truly scare me these days. But alien horror? Even the ones substandard to most send me into a fear frenzy. That’s why I’m taking a deep dive into the sub-genre.
Welcome to Aliens Scare Me. A look into alien horror films on a case by case basis.
This month we check out 2014’s Vicious Brothers (Grave Encounters) film, Extraterrestrial.
What It’s About
A group of friends head out into the country for the weekend to stay at a cabin in the woods (because that always goes so well) in an area recently dealing with mysterious circumstances such as missing persons and cattle mutilation. While drunk and arguing, they witness a UFO crash nearby. Upon investigating, they notice footprints leading right back to their cabin. The group, a Sheriff (Gil Bellows) looking for his missing wife, and a pot growing, tin foil hat wearing...

The week of Thanksgiving is always a major one for moviegoers, and these days, that holds true for streaming too. Netflix typically offers up a new movie that becomes an instant hit among subscribers, and this year it was the animated Adam Sandler film "Leo." If you haven't seen the ads for "Leo," it's a musical coming-of-age comedy about an old lizard (Sandler) who becomes a mentor to fifth graders after they discover the class pet can talk. It's more likely that you have already seen this movie, though, as Netflix reports that 34.6 million people tuned in to watch it during the week of November 20th to 27, 2023.
Streamers' self-reported data is notoriously less-than-transparent, but an animated kids' movie doing huge numbers during a long weekend is a no-brainer. "Leo" also actually looks good; the smooth animation is closer to Dreamworks or Pixar style than typical Netflix fare, and Sandler reigns...

Stefon Zelesky — movie star?
Seth Meyers said this week that a movie based on Bill Hader’s popular Saturday Night Live character was discussed but scrubbed, leaving the club kid who appeared on the late-night staple often from 2008-13, and a couple of times after, to linger only in fans’ memory. And YouTube (see below).
In an interview for Las Culturistas, the podcast hosted by comic actor Matt Rogers and SNL‘s Bowen Yang, the Late Night host said he would have had a small part in the pic but that his “Weekend Update” anchor would have died early on — after a long night of partying with Stefon. So someone else would have had to co-star.
“There was a moment in time where the idea of a Stefon script was being discussed,” he said. “This was not a scene that was written, but I did have a pitch for myself...

"True Lies" is a uniquely '90s movie. The action-comedy features "Roseanne" star Tom Arnold, "Wayne's World" breakout Tia Carrere, and "Terminator" action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger, plus Bill Paxton and Jamie Lee Curtis. While Curtis is, of course, a recent Oscar winner, Paxton passed away in 2017, and the remaining lead actors haven't exactly been headlining many major blockbusters of late. It's also commonly cited as the first movie to cost over $100 million to make, a figure that feels extremely quaint when compared to today's bloated budgets.
Despite the inherent '90s-ness of "True Lies," rumors constantly persist about a sequel to the movie. Writer-director James Cameron is obviously a little busy these days with the "Avatar" sequels, but is there a chance he could ever return to the world of secret agent Harry Tasker? If not, might another filmmaker rise to the challenge and make "True Lies 2" happen? Here's everything...
