"Mad Max: Fury Road" is one of the best movies of all time — according to /Film — a masterpiece of action cinema and a masterclass in visual storytelling. It is also a bit of a live-action cartoon. Like the best live-action directors, George Miller pulls inspiration from "Looney Tunes" as much as he does live-action movies in making his post-apocalyptic epic, with a sense of logic, physics, pacing, and fun that feels more outlandish than grounded.
But before the movie came out and became a big hit and an Oscar winner, it went through development hell for literal decades, only to go through actual hell during filming. Development took so long and suffered so many setbacks that Miller looked at alternatives to "Fury Road," including telling a completely different story in animated form. Indeed, we know that in 2009 — between two "Happy Feet" movies — Miller considered making an R-rated 3D "Mad Max" anime instead,...

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite film series. Similar to his namesake George Lucas and his brainchild Star Wars, Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by three successful sequels in the 80s.

In a candid interview with Total Film, producer Doug Mitchell disclosed an interesting titbit about the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
In the interview, Mitchell revealed that the groundwork for Furiosa‘s narrative was laid 15 years ago. The script was even completed before the critically-acclaimed Fury Road.
But here’s the real kicker: the initial vision for Furiosa was wildly different. Originally titled The Peach, it was planned as an anime film to be directed by Mahiro Maeda, known for his contributions in a number of anime films, from Neon Genesis Evangelion to Studio Ghibli films such as Porco Rosso and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
However, the trajectory of Furiosa took a surprising turn, pivoting from its anime origins to emerge as a live-action film.

Hayao Miyazaki stands as a luminary in the anime and animation realm, wielding multiple roles – director, producer, scriptwriter, animator, author, manga artist, and Studio Ghibli's co-owner. Reshaping the landscape, he was one of the pioneers of elevating anime beyond teenage audiences. His magnum opus, “Spirited Away,” broke records and became the first anime to win an Oscar. In 2014, he earned an Honorary Academy Award, a testament to his cinematic impact. A prolific storyteller since 1972, Miyazaki, continues to come up with titles that top the category, although his latest one, “The Boy and the Heron” could possibly be his last.
11 writers of Asian Movie Pulse who have watched at least 8 of his feature films voted for this list, in which we present his 12 films in order of quality.

Imaginary Worldwide Deal
Netflix has picked up worldwide rights to “The Imaginary,” a currently-on-release Japanese animation film from producer Studio Ponoc.
“Studio Ponoc is thrilled to bring our storytelling and innovative hand-drawn, hand-painted animated films to all audiences, and in particular to children and their families to enjoy together, around the world on Netflix,” said Nishimura Yoshiaki, Ponoc founder and former Studio Ghibli producer.
The film is directed by Momose Yoshiyuki, who has credits on Ponoc’s 2017 title “Mary and the Witch’s Flower” and others on Ghibli’s “Spirited Away,” “Princess Mononoke” and “Porco Rosso.”
Adapted from a novel by A.F. Harold, with a screenplay by Nishimura, the film “portrays the depths of humanity and creativity through the eyes of young Amanda and her imaginary companion, Rudger. Whether referring to an A.I.-driven animation demo as “an insult to life itself,” walking out of a movie directed by his own son (“It feels like I was sitting there for about three hours”), or insisting to anyone who will listen that “filmmaking only brings suffering,” legendary director and living meme factory Hayao Miyazaki has long provided the likes of David Cronenberg and Ridley Scott with serious competition as modern cinema’s most reliable crank. And yet, in spite of Miyazaki’s curmudgeonly demeanor and his work’s consistent emphasis on the toxic effects of human civilization in a world cursed by our very existence, there may not be any other auteur whose movies have brought more joy to more people over the last 45 years, or are so widely beloved by children.

The 2023 Berlin International Film Festival is screening its first Japanese anime film in competition in over two decades. The previous occasion was the international premiere of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away in 2002, so it’s perhaps fitting that the latest selection is Suzume, the newest release from Makoto Shinkai, the director most often hailed as Miyaki’s heir as Japan’s next historic anime talent.
Like his past two anime blockbusters Your Name (which earned 357 million worldwide in 2017) and Weathering With You (193 million, 2020), Suzume tells a YA story of fantasy, adventure and romance, involving characters coping with a sense of loss and cataclysmic disaster. The new film follows a high-school girl named Suzume who meets a mysterious young man named Sōta and becomes involved in his mission to track down and close a sequence of mysterious metaphysical doors that are opening in abandoned areas of Japan and threatening the entire country with disaster.

Streaming giant Netflix has licensed rights to “Earwig and the Witch,” the most recent animated feature from Japan’s Studio Ghibli. The deal excludes the U.S. and Japan.

Oscar-winning animation giant Hayao Miyazaki is at the center of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ inaugural temporary exhibition when it opens to public (hopefully) in the spring. Previously announced for the honor, the Academy is now providing details of one of the key highlights initial visitors will experience when the long-delayed museum finally opens its doors.
With the museum’s opening most recently delayed from December 14 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the gala unveiling is now set for public consumption April 30 with a big promotional boost on the also-delayed Academy Awards scheduled to take place on April 25.
Japanese icon Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 and the production house has collaborated with Academy Museum exhibitions curator Jessica Niebel and assistant curator J. Raul Guzman to pull it all together in the museum’s Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery, marking the first North American retrospective ever dedicated to Miyazaki and his prolific body of world-acclaimed work.

At last, the soundtrack to a Studio Ghibli classic is getting its due for at-home listening. The score for “Princess Mononoke,” Hayao Miyazaki’s 1997 animated fantasy masterpiece, will get its first-ever vinyl release this summer from Norman Records. On July 24, Joe Hisaishi’s alternately epic and intimate classical-inspired score will roll out in three editions.
One release includes the original score as conducted by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, including main theme vocals by Yoshikazu Mera. A second edition will boast the “Symphonic Suite,” recorded a year after Miyazaki’s film originally came out, and newly performed with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Disney artist and theme park designer, John Ramirez, has created a series of concept art showing his vision of what a studio Ghibli theme park would look like along with the rides that it would entail. He's spent years developing this art and this is a theme park that I would love to see brought to life! It looks like it would be absolutely wonderful!
He has created designs for attractions inspired by Totoro, Laputa, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso and Spirited Away. Unfortunately, none of these are official. This isn't a theme park that's going to be built, but it totally should!
I'm such a huge fan of these films and a theme park built around these worlds that Studio Ghibli has created over the years would be amazing!

Studio Ghibli films are known for their lush animation and attention to detail, and a new video from Ghibli Museum points out unique connections and easter eggs found in the work of co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. Similar to American animation studios such as Disney and Pixar, Ghibli animators find room to put fun flourishes in their work.

In 1986, Hayao Miyazaki released one of his very best films. We look back at the lasting power and influence of Laputa: Castle In The Sky.
How does humanity quench its thirst for progress while at the same time protecting the environment? Can technology and nature exist side by side, or will our destructive tendencies always get in the way? Those are questions that underscore many of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, from the lighter-than-air eco fable Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind to his final animated feature, The Wind Rises.
In Miyazaki’s work, there’s a constant tension at play between nature and machines, between the tranquility of rural Japan and the industrial revolution of its post war era. The son of an aeronautical engineer, Miyazaki grew up as Japan rebuilt itself in the middle of the 20th century; he was born into a generation with...

Released in 2010, Ni No Kuni was one of the best RPGs of its generation, thanks in no small part to its spectacular production values. Jrpg developer Level-5 has announced a sequel to its 2011 game Ni No Kuni. Here's the first trailer for Revenant Kingdom...
Level 5's Ni No Kuni was arguably among the most beautiful-looking RPGs of the last generation. With animation and character designs by Studio Ghibli, it offered a Pokemon-like game of familiar catching and training, married to a genuinely epic story about lost parents, enchanted kingdoms and evil witches.
It was a game so complete and unique that we didn't necessarily expect to even get a sequel, and yet here it is: Ni No Kuni II: The Revenant Kingdom. It's a PlayStation 4 exclusive, and looks subtly different from the last game; that adventure's young hero Oliver is replaced by a slightly older protagonist named Evan, a boy not quite ready for his role as king of Ding Dong Dell. Every week we dive into the cream of the crop when it comes to home releases, including Blu-ray and DVDs, as well as recommended deals of the week. Check out our rundown below and return every Tuesday for the best (or most interesting) films one can take home. Note that if you’re looking to support the site, every purchase you make through the links below helps us and is greatly appreciated.
The Apu Trilogy (Satyajit Ray)
Although it premiered 60 years ago this week at the Museum of Modern Art, Satyajit Ray‘s Pather Panchali remains among both the most accomplished of debuts and cinema’s most universally relatable experiences. Accentuating the basics of human emotions to result in the most complex of reactions, Ray’s subsequent trilogy of films follows the hardships of a Bengali boy as he passes into adulthood, a delicately powerful tale of transition that’s now been gloriously restored.

As When Marnie Was There emerges on disc, we look at Ghibli's final films and what they mean for the future of animation...
If there’s one abiding message behind Studio Ghibli’s animated output, it’s that nothing is permanent. Happiness is delicate; summers pass; memories fade. But the brilliance of the Japanese animation house’s movies is that they find joy in the fleeting, not just melancholy. The encounter between two children and adorably rotund woodland spirits in My Neighbour Totoro is all the more special because it’s presented very definitely as a one-off: a chance meeting that can never happen again.
Studio Ghibli was founded in 1984 following the success of Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, Hayao Miyazaki’s masterful, dazzlingly detailed sci-fi fantasy. From that point on, Miyazaki was established as the sharpest prong on Ghibli’s creative trident, the others...

If there’s one abiding message behind Studio Ghibli’s animated output, it’s that nothing is permanent. Happiness is delicate; summers pass; memories fade. But the brilliance of the Japanese animation house’s movies is that they find joy in the fleeting, not just melancholy. The voice of Patrick Star, Bill Fagerbakke, explains Spongebob to us...
The man who provides the voice to Patrick Star in Spongebob Squarepants - and thus, in the recent The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water feature - is Mr Bill Fagerbakke. As Sponge Out Of Water arrives on DVD, he spared us some time for a chat. But we started with something not so fishy...
Before we get onto Spongebob, it'd be remiss of me not to bring up the Starship Troopers animated TV show that you leant your voice to. That was the only proper companion they ever really did to the film.
Yeah. That was a cool ride. It was another time I worked with Clancy Brown too. The session director was Sue Blue, and it was so much fun. It was one of the very rare times in my voiceover career where I've portrayed a 'regular...

Hayao Miyazaki fans rejoice! Nerdist announced yesterday that a collective Blu-ray boxset is being released in November of the beloved filmmaker’s work. Big news for anyone who’s been waiting to own all of Miyazaki’s films in great quality, especially his lesser known ones.
Amazon will be releasing The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki on November 17 and it will contain all 11 of the director’s feature films: Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and The Wind Rises. If the films didn’t excite you enough, then these bonus features surely will, like Yuki no Taiyo (Yuki’s Sun), a 1972 pilot based on a manga by Tetsuya Chiba that Miyazaki storyboarded, animated, and directed. The set also includes the...

Though Hayao Miyazaki made a graceful retirement from the world of hand-drawn animated features in 2013 with The Wind Rises, eschewing many of the fantastical elements that had become his signature in favor of a more realistic approach to the life and legacy of Jiro Horikoshi, many of his films are just now finding their way to Blu-ray, both in Japan and the United States. One of the recent high-definition upgrades is Porco Rosso, the film that first gave us some insight into Hayao’s love of aeronautical engineering and which, like The Wind Rises, plays down the fantastic in favor of highlighting the majesty air travel used to embody in a bygone era. Throw in some sky pirates, a protagonist cursed with the face of a pig, and some beautiful animation and you have a film worthy of addition to any Blu-ray collection.
