When Hayley Mills Lost Her Disney Millions Overnight—The 91% Tax Blow That Changed Everything
Image
Hayley Mills Faced Devastating Disney Fortune Loss (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Hayley Mills once had a $17 million Disney fortune tucked away. Then, overnight, it vanished, thanks to a brutal 91% tax rate that left her stunned and scrambling. In her memoir Forever Young, Mills opened up about how her childhood success turned into financial heartbreak.

At just 14, Mills became a household name after playing the mischievous twins Susan and Sharon in The Parent Trap (1961). She also bagged a now-defunct Juvenile Oscar for Pollyanna. Her star only rose from there, lighting up films like Tiger Bay (1959), Whistle Down the Wind (1961), In Search of the Castaways (1962), and That Darn Cat! (1965).

By the time she turned 21, Mills had built up an impressive trust from years of Disney magic. But when she went to claim it, she received a financial horror story instead. According to her memoir, her lawyer Stanley Passmore broke the news (via Cheat Sheet): “Well,...

‘The Voice’ Season 27 Fan Favorite Stuns With a Cover of This Timeless Classic
Image
The Voice Season 27 knockout rounds have been incredible, delivering audiences countless contestant performances that had our hair standing on end. Last night, the knockout round bowed out with perhaps the best episode of the lot, with a selection of goosebump-inducing covers from the likes of Renzo, Adam David, Hailey Wright, and more. However, four people probably felt last night was anything but effortlessly fun, and that is the coaches: Kelsea Ballerini, Adam Levine, Michael Bublé, and John Legend.

For this quartet of musical icons, the final knockout round brought with it the hardest decisions they've had to make yet, with no 'Save' option to get them out of trouble. As the episode continued and nail-biting choices left the audience and contestants shocked, it all finally came down to the last knockout round, with Team Adam's Conor James going head-to-head with Darius Jay. The internet has since been split on whether...

‘The Voice’ Season 27 Episode 11 recap: Kelsea steals an artist from Adam because she ‘wouldn’t do good in jail’
Image
The Voice Season 27 continued the third stage of the competition on Monday with the third installment of "Knockouts" performances. In this round, each coach will set four head-to-head matchups from their team and will be forced to choose only four winners. While they won't be able to save any of the losers from their own team, each coach will have a Steal to bring a loser from another team with them to "The Playoffs." By the end of the round's 16 performances, 20 artists will remain in the competition.

One hallmark of this round is that the artists get to choose their own song to perform rather than have it selected by their coach, as was done in the "Battles." Another is that without guest mentors assisting during rehearsals, it's the first time that John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé and Adam Levine get to work one-on-one with the artists on their team.

The Voice’s Last Season 27 Knockouts Leave Us Going Yodelayheehoo No!
Image
As The Voice brought its Season 27 Knockouts to a close Monday evening, five more contestants were issued mic-drop moments — as in “Drop the mic and go.” Losing one would-be winner in particular really bummed me out, too, especially after the performance that she’d just given. (You can watch it below.) Before I start crying in my beer, though, let’s discuss that face-off and all of the others, too.

Team Legend: Renzo performing “happier than ever” (Grade: A+) defeated Nell Simmons performing “Sweet Thing” (Grade: A) | Tackling Chaka Khan’s classic, Nell gave us everything that we could’ve...

Lady Gaga Performs Touching Tribute, Nirvana Reunites and Music’s Biggest Stars Catch Up Backstage at L.A. FireAid Benefit Concert
Image
“California, Los Angeles, Altadena, the Palisades — we are in this together,” Green Day’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong screamed to a sold-out crowd at L.A.’s Kia Forum on Thursday for the FireAid wildfire benefit concert.

As the first act of the star-studded evening, the iconic rock band kicked off the show with their 2009 track “Last Night on Earth,” bringing out fellow artist Billie Eilish to perform. The group reiterated that everyone was “in this together.”

Actor and comedian Billy Crystal, who lost his home in the Palisades Fire, took the stage after Green Day to officially welcome the crowd. He spoke about his own experience, telling concertgoers that he was wearing the clothes when he evacuated from his home and which he wore for a week. He announced that all donations of the night would be matched by Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and his wife, Connie Snyder, the...

Elijah Wood movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
To many, he will always be Frodo Baggins, the brave little furry-footed hobbit who volunteers to bear the burden of carrying the dreaded One Ring as he leaves his bucolic existence behind while sacrificing himself to save Middle-earth in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

But Elijah Wood has had quite a varied career beyond the Shire ever since he made his film debut at 8-years-old with a small part as Video Game Boy #2 in 1989’s “Back to the Future Part II.” He would go on to land the coveted central role in the epic fantasy franchise based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduring classic when he was 18. But his early output on the big screen consisted of a string of so-so ‘90s titles such as “Radio Flyer,” “Paradise” and “Forever Young.” However, he often earned praise for his part in even mediocre projects.

But when he reached his teens, Wood...

French Cesar Academy Implements Zero-Tolerance Policy on Sexual Violence, Suspends Members Under Investigation
Image
One month ahead of this year’s ceremony, France’s Cesar Academy has promised not to “spotlight” anyone accused of sexual or physical violence while issuing regulatory changes to curtail the voting rights of any Academy member facing legal accusations of that nature.

If a member is ultimately convicted, they will be expelled from the Academy for the duration of their sentence.

“In the event of legal proceedings against a member for acts of violence, particularly of a sexist or sexual nature,” the Academy announced, “the board will suspend the member’s voting rights until the ongoing procedure is concluded, or exclude them entirely until the full completion of the sentence, in the case of a final conviction.”

The Cesar Academy adopted a new charter on Jan. 23, promising to “fight against all forms of violence” while instating these zero-tolerance regulations for all legal accusations of sexual assaut. This rule change...

A Complete Unknown: What Bob Dylan Is Doing Now
Image
A Complete Unknown is the newest Hollywood musical biopic, starring Timothée Chalamet in the lead role as a young Bob Dylan. The film has received relatively good reviews, with the highest praise being directed at Chalamet's excellent performance as Dylan alongside the rest of A Complete Unknown's cast, while the actual storytelling of the film has been viewed as a little lackluster. Nevertheless, A Complete Unknown has reignited interest in Bob Dylan himself, as many find themselves wondering what happened after the film, and where he is today.

Many of A Complete Unknown's reviews argue that the film doesn't go deep enough into Dylan as a person, pointing out that some of the most well-known songs of all time have been written and performed by him. Dylan's music and popularity were undoubtedly at their peak during the 1960s and 1970s when he released his first major hits and...

The Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Movie That J.J. Abrams Turned Down
Image
A fun piece of trivia: one of J.J. Abrams' first professional gigs was writing the music for Don Dohler's 1982 horror cheapie "Nightbeast." Dohler, as B-movie fans might know, is the creative mind behind "The Alien Factor" and "Galaxy Invader," movies that were filmed mostly in the woods. Abrams has since become one of the preeminent makers of big-budget mainstream blockbusters, so it's fun to picture him as a teen handing over tapes to a hard-working schlockmeister like Dohler.

Abrams stuck with it, though, and eventually sold a film treatment to screenwriter Paul Mazursky when he was still in college. That treatment became Arthur Hiller's 1990 comedy "Taking Care of Business" with Jim Belushi. Abrams continued to rise through the ranks of Tinseltown from there, penning the scripts for films like "Regarding Henry," "Forever Young," and, uh, "Gone Fishin'." By the early 2000s, Abrams had enough clout to launch...

10 Highly Underrated Jamie Lee Curtis Movies
Image
Jamie Lee Curtis has established a distinguished career characterized by versatility and resilience, positioning her as one of Hollywood's most adaptable actors. While her portrayal in horror films such as Halloween has solidified her status as a prominent figure in the genre, her performances in a variety of film categories, including thrillers, comedies, and dramas are some of Jamie Lee Curtis' best films and underscore her capacity to embody multifaceted characters. Her extensive film career encompasses numerous undervalued films that exemplify her ability well beyond the confines of horror.

These less-celebrated films, ranging from intense psychological thrillers to poignant dramas, unveil Curtis' adeptness at combining vulnerability with determination. Review: Grey's Anatomy Season 21 Premiere Maintains a Status Quo It Doesn't Need
1 (2013)
The following contains massive spoilers for Grey's Anatomy Season 21, Episode 1, "If Walls Could Talk," which aired Thursday, Sept. 26 on ABC.

Grey's Anatomy Season 20 wrapped with several members of the Grey-Sloan Memorial team losing their jobs -- Teddy Altman because she secretly funded Alzheimer's research that Meredith Grey and Amelia Shepherd were conducting against the explicit instructions of Catherine Fox, Meredith and Amelia for conducting said research, and Owen Hunt because he came to Teddy's defense in an argument with Catherine.

But that wasn't the end of the damage. In the season's final moments, the intern class and Miranda Bailey likewise came to the defense of Derek's nephew Lucas Adams, who was meeting with Catherine about his future in the program, and the cliffhanger was Bailey asking Catherine if she would be willing to lose her. The Grey's Anatomy Season 21 premiere "If Walls Could Talk," reveals that Catherine considers...

‘The 1974 Live Recordings’ is a Deeper-Than-Deep Dive Into Dylan’s First Arena Tour

Despite stiff competition on that year’s rock-legend road-show circuit—the Grateful Dead touring the massive Wall of Sound speaker system, Csny reunited, hitting the sheds, and de-uniting in record time—there was only one outing anybody meant when they said Tour ’74. That January and February, Bob Dylan and The Band reunited for 39 shows in 21 cities, their first jaunt together—and Dylan’s first, period—since the notorious 1966 world tour that would feed rock’s early bootleg industry.

“I didn’t get it… Maybe I wasn’t smart enough”: Hardcore Star Trek Fans Will Never Forgive J. J. Abrams for What He Said About The Original Series
Image
Who wasn’t intrigued by the legendary debates, pitting diehard Trekkies against steadfast Star Warriors, or even within the Star Trek community itself as they deliberated over the merits of old versus new?

Such intense conversations often revolved around J.J. Abrams, whose 2009 cinematic reboot of Star Trek boldly attempted to bridge the nostalgia of Star Trek: The Original Series with a fresh narrative trajectory. With the finesse of a skilled Starfleet commander, the director, 58, maneuvered the complex universe with a 2009 flick, starring Chris Pine as James T. Kirk.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek | Credits: Paramount Television

And yet, the film took an audacious leap, rewriting much of the lore that longtime fans held dear. To hear the director of the Star Trek movie confess that he does not comprehend Star Trek: The Original Series but that the movie still needs to be made is blatant heresy.

Unpacking J.J. Abrams...

Screambox Hidden Gems: 5 Horror Movies to Stream This Week Including ‘My Grandpa Is a Vampire’
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

Horror in the High Desert

One of the most fruitful uses of found footage in recent memory, Horror in the High Desert is a pseudo-documentary chronicling the bizarre events that stem from the 2017 disappearance of a hiker in the Nevada wilderness.

Writer-director Dutch Marich achieves verisimilitude with smart direction and authentic performances. In classic true crime doc fashion, information is strategically unveiled to maximize impact. The methodical pacing pays off with an incredibly unnerving final 15 minutes of found footage. You’ll immediately want to follow it up with the equally effective sequel, Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva, also on Screambox.

‘AGT: Fantasy League’ episode 4 recap: Which of the 10 Dream Team acts advanced from ‘Qualifiers 4’? [Live Blog]
Image
“AGT: Fantasy League” continued on January 22 with the fourth set of 10 performances in “Qualifiers 4.” The new spin-off series marks the return of former judge Mel B as she joins Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel in a head-to-head competition to mentor an all star ‘AGT’ act through the season to victory. Diana Quick
Forever Young review– anti-ageing fantasy drama kept alive by magnetic Diana Quick
Diana Quick
Quick plays a 70-year-old writer who takes a new treatment that could enable her to have a child. She is emotionally transparent and intellectually engaged, unlike the film

Diana Quick makes a return to the big screen – after a six-year break – with a first-rate performance in a second-rate (perhaps third-rate) film. Forever Young is a ploddingly drab British sci-fi drama that really doesn’t have what it takes to keep up with Quick; she stars as a 70-year-old writer taking an unlicensed drug to reverse the ageing process. It’s impossible to take your eyes off her: intellectually engaged and emotionally transparent. It’s a pity then that the script is unserious and uninteresting, with nothing to say either about the existential leap in the dark of eternal youth or the ethics of the anti-ageing industry.

Quick is Robyn, a bestselling author who’s been happily married to Oscar (Bernard Hill) for donkey’s years.
