Brendan Fraser in Encino Man (1992)

Encino Man

Is ‘The Studio’ Fun but Shallow? No, Seth Rogen’s Series Is Addictive Because It Gets to the Heart of the New Entertainment Malaise
Image
When a satire of the movie industry takes a big swing, it can succeed only if it connects in a piercingly funny and bold way. It has to offer us an eye-opening new take on how Hollywood works. And that’s the bar “The Studio” has set for itself. I think Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Apple TV+ series about the inner workings of a contemporary movie studio triumphantly clears that bar. “The Studio” isn’t just addictively entertaining — it’s wickedly perceptive. It has a bead on the film business today like nothing you’ve seen. Yet the series, which just aired its sixth episode (there are four more to go), has come in for some dismissals. That’s partly because of its in-your-face style, which some find obnoxious.

Yet it’s also because there are viewers who look at the show and see something broad and derivative rather than new and insightful.

Ke Huy Quan Names 1 Important Life Skill Indiana Jones Co-Star Harrison Ford Taught Him
Image
Ke Huy Quan has revealed the important life skill he learned from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom co-star Harrison Ford. The Oscar-winning actor was just 13 years old when he worked with Ford in the 1984 prequel, playing Indiana Jones' sidekick Short Round.

Temple of Doom saw Indy and Short Round trying to rescue villagers in British India from the clutches of a cult practising black magic. Steven Spielberg's movie featured some now-classic action sequences, including Indy trying to trap members of the cult in crocodile-infested waters.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Quan credited his co-star with teaching him how to swim on the Temple of Doom set.

'Love Hurts' Is Breaking Ke Huy Quan's 40-Year-Old Streak
Image
Quick Links'Love Hurts' Is a Charming and Entertaining Action ComedyKe Huy Quan's Extraordinary Hollywood Journey

Ke Huy Quan is undeniably one of Hollywood's most endearing and cherished performers, with the Academy Award-winner having first skyrocketed to superstardom as a child actor in the '80s with unforgettable roles in the beloved classics Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies. After struggling to find worthy roles as an adult, Quan stepped back from the entertainment industry and took a self-imposed 19-year acting hiatus before making his epic return to the silver screen with 2021's Finding 'Ohana.

Quan wasted no time following up the family film, brilliantly portraying Waymond Wong in the absurdist dramedy Everything Everywhere All at Once the next year and helping it become both a critical and commercial triumph while also taking home an Oscar. More than 40 years since making his dazzling debut in the 1984 Steven Spielberg blockbuster,...

The Goonies Cast Reunites 40 Years Later to Honor Ke Huy Quan
Image
It’s been 40 years since The Goonies first said “Never say die” on the big screen. Recently, most of the cast gathered to recognize actor Key Huy Quan, who played Data in the 1985 The Gooniesmovie. Quan, who won an Academy Award in 2023 for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, was honored with a hand and footprint ceremony at the Tcl Chinese Theater in Los Angeles on Feb. 3.

Per People, The Goonies screenwriter Chris Columbus along with Quan’s costars Corey Feldman (Mouth), Jeff Cohen (Chunk), Kerri Green (Andy), and Josh Brolin (Brand), were on hand for the ceremony. Brolin, who spoke at the ceremony, had nothing but kind things to say about Quan, who played Data in The Goonies.

'Like a Bond Villain': Ke Huy Quan Wants to Play a 'Diabolical, Really Bad Guy' for His Next Big Role
Image
Ke Huy Quan has been cast in protagonist roles his entire career. Love Hurts hints at a shift, but the Loki star also wants to play complex antagonists in movies.

Love Hurts proved Ke Huy Quan can headline action films. The trailer showed him channeling John Wick's stunts with inimitable, contagious cheer. Quan acknowledged he's known for playing good-natured characters, which is why he really wants a shot at drastically different roles for a change. "I would love to play a bad guy. Like a Bond villain," he told Empire. "Or the kind of thing Hugh Grant does in Heretic. I want to go out of my comfort zone and just play this diabolical, really bad guy." Quan is appearing in three films in 2025 but none of these cast him as an antagonist.

Mayim Bialik Was Starstruck By One The Big Bang Theory Guest Star
Image
Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady's 2007 sitcom "The Big Ban Theory" was hotly contested when it was on the air. In the early 2000s, certain kinds of "geek" interests moved from the cultural fringe directly into the mainstream, and previously derided niche interests like "Dungeons & Dragons," comic books, long-form video games, astronomy, trivia, and fantasy in general all became widely accepted as a new entertainment zeitgeist. New kinds of kid-acceptable pop artists came to be canonized. The geek ecosystem was widespread and easily available to any curious takers.

"The Big Bang Theory," however, was lambasted by some viewers for its inaccurate portrayals of modern-day geeks. The characters on "Big Bang" were all scientists or intellectuals, and they all loved "Star Wars," comic books, and RPGs, but they didn't talk the way geeks talked, nor did they organically celebrate geek culture. "The Big Bang Theory" relied too heavily on outdated...

Brendan Fraser on Why Darren Aronofsky Really Cast Him in ‘The Whale’ and “Brenaissance” Memes
Image
Hollywood legend already has it Darren Aronofsky took ten years to find an actor to play a 600 lb man in The Whale, before setting his sights on Brendan Fraser.

But Fraser, during an informal conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival on Sunday, revealed the real reason Aranofsky cast him in the Oscar-winning role of Charlie. “He was looking for an actor who hadn’t been seen in a while. He told me. And that was me. He wanted to reintroduce that actor through a performance that would be transformative and have an element of this is the last person you might expect to do this role,” Fraser recalled.

And that was all fine for Fraser, who added he’s quite happy with the “Brenaissance” memes to underscore one of Hollywood’s most memorable career comebacks. “Yes, look at me,” he said from the stage of Old Town Al-Balad in Jeddah,...

Brendan Fraser praises Saudi film industry growth: “You’ve got the hard part out the way”
Image
Brendan Fraser offered praise of the Saudi Arabian film industry while speaking at Red Sea International Film Festival today.

Responding to a question at his in-conversation event about what the local industry can do to grow, in the context of his own break from and return to acting, Fraser said, “Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re doing it right. You’re telling stories that you know.”

“The filmmakers of this territory are working from an emotional place that’s intensely personal,” he continued. “It proves we can captivate, educate, enlighten, transport an audience without all the decorous elements of filmmaking.

Brendan Fraser films: 15 best movies ranked
Image
Brendan Fraser is accustomed to being underestimated Until recently, he was never looked at as that kind of actor – the kind that’s considered a major contender during awards season. That all changed thanks to his seminal Oscar-winning performance in “The Whale” (from director Darren Aronofsky). But the truth is that he’s been a quality actor for a long time, and if his Big Moment wasn’t necessarily inevitable, it was perhaps overdue.

The actor who was born on December 3, 1968 in Indianapolis, Indiana has been best known until now for starring in the “The Mummy” franchise. But Fraser has been a consistent presence on screens big and small for three decades, going back to his days headlining agreeably lowbrow comedies like “Encino Man” from 1992 and “Airheads” in [94. He also had a role in a Best Picture Oscar winner (2004’s “Crash”) and a pair of dramas that drew universal critical praise (“Gods and Monsters” from 1998 and “The Quiet American” from 2002). If Fraser ran into a bit of a slump over the past 15 years or so,...

Brendan Fraser's Oscar-Winning Drama Gets New Streaming Home
Image
Actor Brendan Fraser may be best known for his work in The Mummy franchise, or for Millennials, his memorable turn as Link in Encino Man (1992), but it was his performance in 2022s The Whale that earned him the Best Actor Oscar in 2023. Starting November 1, The Whale will stream on Netflix. In addition to Frasers Oscar-winning performance, the film also took home the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling in 2023.

In The Whale, Fraser is nearly unrecognizable as he is playing a morbidly obese, gay English professor named Charlie who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. The movie is based on a play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter, and chronicles Charlie, whose health is on the decline, as he tries to get his daughter, Ellie, played by Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) to spend time with him by giving her money.

How The Sixth Sense's success ended a major Disney studio brand
Image
The Sixth Sense may have been a monster hit, but it inadvertently killed its own studio brand! Here’s how Disney’s mega-hit ended Hollywood Pictures!

Twenty-five years after its debut, much has been written about The Sixth Sense and its impact. One thing overlooked is how almost no one in Hollywood expected this supernatural thriller to make an impact. Indeed, in their annual Summer Movie Preview issue in 1999, Entertainment Weekly didn’t even mention Sense.

Sure, it had a big-name star in Bruce Willis, but it was an odd film from a completely unknown writer/director being released in August, traditionally the dumping ground for bad movies. It debuted to $26.6 million, then the highest August release. Thanks to good reviews, strong word of mouth and, of course, that now-famous twist ending, Sense became the second highest-grossing movie of 1999, $672.8 million worldwide. It earned multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and director,...

What Happened To Pauly Shore?
Image
After enjoying massive success in the 1990s, the comedian Pauly Shore seemed to disappear from the public eye. Shore became known for his manic comic delivery, which appropriates 1990s surfer speak and makes use of his signature line, Hey Buuuddy! It was a controversial persona, one which ruffled all the right feathers in the 90s, earning Shore fame and notoriety as the personification of the MTV-watching, authority-hating slacker stereotype that was so prominent during this time.

Pauly Shore was born and raised in Los Angeles, where his parents worked in comedy and the entertainment industry.

Shores candle burned brightly in the 90s, but as soon as the moment moved on, he was left behind. His decline in popularity was as rapid as his rise, but the star never went away entirely. Unfortunately for Shore, his most enduring legacy, his movies, is his least popular work. While many overlooked 90s...

Remember Touchstone Pictures? (10 Great Movies You Never Saw)
Image
A little while back, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. This summer, the Mouse House released an uncommonly bold MCU movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, which sported an R-rating, and has done blockbuster business. Many are wondering if perhaps this could have the way for Disney to tackle some adult fare, but it wouldn’t be the first time, and maybe now is the time to bring back Touchstone Pictures.

So, what’s Touchstone Pictures...

Pauly Shore said he “was up all night crying” due to Richard Simmons continuing to publicly distance himself from a biopic that would star Shore as the fitness guru.

Pauly Shore Still Hopes to Make Encino Man 2, Reveals What's Holding Up the Sequel
Image
All it will take for Encino Man 2 to become a reality is for the sequel to be finally greenlit by Disney.

In years past, Pauly Shore has expressed his desire to make a sequel to Encino Man, the cult classic comedy that was released in 1992. In a new interview with Variety, Shore shared the latest update on the potential sequel, confirming that he's still very much on board to return if that were a possibility. The actor explained how the only thing that's holding up the film is that the rights are owned by Disney, and the House of Mouse doesn't seem to have much interest in ordering a sequel. With that noted, Shore also said that a quality script would also need to be written before moving forward.

Is Encino Man 2 Happening Or Is The Brendan Fraser Movie Frozen Forever?
Image
As far as '90s comedies go, "Encino Man" is up there as one of the seemingly forgotten flicks that die-hard fans are thirsting with nostalgia over. The film helped establish Pauly Shore as a genuine movie star and it certainly doesn't hurt that both Sean Astin ("The Lord of the Rings") and Brendan Fraser ("The Mummy") have gone on to become cherished actors in their own right. It's an of-its-time comedy that remains loved to this day. But could a sequel be on the horizon?

For those who may need a refresher, director Les Mayfield's 1992 film centers on Dave (Astin) who uncovers a caveman frozen in a block of ice while digging a hole for a swimming pool. With the help of his friend Stoney (Shore), Dave moves the caveman (Fraser) to their garage where he thaws out and comes back to life. The duo then attempts to...

Brendan Fraser Lands First Major Post-Oscar Role with ‘Beef’ Director Hikari’s ‘Rental Family’

After saying that he’d be very picky about his next role after winning an Oscar, Brendan Fraser has found it. He will star in “Rental Family” for Searchlight Pictures and from filmmaker Hikari, best known for her work on “Beef.”

Fraser in “Rental Family” will star as a down-and-out actor living in Tokyo who is hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental family company providing professional stand-in services.

Hikari has been developing “Rental Family” since 2019, and she also co-wrote the film with Stephen Blahut. The film will begin principal photography this spring in Japan. No release date has been announced.

Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev of Sight Unseen, which produced this year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner “A Thousand and One,” are producing “Rental Family.” Hikari and Shin Yamaguchi, who produced her prior feature “37 Seconds” in 2019, will also produce. They never asked to be heroes, but that's what they became. Their being a team goes beyond saving the world, however: in a way, they can save each other, as they're also a sort of support group for one another.

Update October 12, 2023: In anticipation of the last half of Doom Patrol's final season, this article has been updated with even more cast members by Jack Deegan.

While at times grim, Doom Patrol is a fun, action-packed series that does its comic book source material justice, and as a comic fan, that's all anyone can ask for. The series has a lot of heart and works so well, thanks to its stellar cast. Fans know most...

Pauly Shore Lobbies for Richard Simmons Role, Predicts He’d Win the Oscar in 2025
Just Pauly
Pauly Shore has launched a grassroots campaign to become the leading man of a not-yet-in-development Richard Simmons film, asking fans to reach out to the major Hollywood studios to help “make it happen.”

Shore, the “Encino Man” and “Bio-Dome” star whose last acting credit came with the 2021 comedy “How It Ends,” said his efforts were sparked by a groundswell of fan interest. He even predicted it would all result in an Oscar.

“I’ve noticed all the reactions to me playing Richard Simmons in a new biopic,” Shore wrote in a post to Facebook. “So I reached out to him. I heard he’s living deep in Big Bear.

“We’ve been playing phone tag,” Shore added. “I’m trying to make it happen for you guys. Be optimistic.”

The Mummy's Failed 2017 Reboot Proved The Harsh Truth Of The Franchise's Future After 24 Years
Image
The failure of The Mummy's 2017 reboot showed that the original cast and characters are irreplaceable, as it was their fun factor that made the original movie a hit. A sequel would be a better option than another reboot, as it would retain the beloved cast and characters while continuing the successful story arcs of the franchise. While there may still be some hope for The Mummy 4, the decline in critical ratings and box office numbers of the previous movies suggests that audiences may be experiencing franchise fatigue. Brendan Fraser's return may be the only compelling reason to watch it.

The Mummy's 2017 reboot revealed a harsh truth about its parent franchise and its potential future. Despite being a retelling of the 1932 Mummy, 1999's The Mummy breathed new life into the original horror movie franchise with its modern and relatively more comical take on the monster sub-genre. However, long...

Scrubs: Who Brendan Fraser Played (& Why Zach Braff Loved Working With Him)
Image
Scrubs featured memorable guest stars, including Brendan Fraser, who played Ben Sullivan, Dr. Cox's ex-brother-in-law and good friend. Ben's storyline blurred the lines between doctors and patients, highlighting the humanity of the patients and creating empathy among the protagonists. Zach Braff, who played J.D. on Scrubs, loved working with Brendan Fraser and described his character's arc as one of the most talked-about in the show's nine seasons.

While Scrubs is known for its talented and hilarious main cast, the medical sitcom also featured some memorable guest stars, including Brendan Fraser. Created by Bill Lawrence, Scrubs ran for nearly a decade from 2001 to 2010, following various medical interns and employees at the teaching hospital Sacred Heart. The series often walked the line between comedy and drama, featuring a quick pace, slapstick humor, and many fantasy sequences as well as moving character moments and devastating episode arcs. Scrubs was nominated for 17 Emmys throughout its run,...

Killers Of The Flower Moon Was An Emotional Reunion For Brendan Fraser And Leonardo DiCaprio
Image
Brendan Fraser's richly deserved comeback crested last March when he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." It was the end of a long, hard road that began in the 2000s with a messy divorce, an alleged sexual assault at the groping hands of the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and a deep depression caused by the death of his mother. Fraser had gone from being one of the most exciting talents of his generation to a C-level movie star.

That generation included Chris O'Donnell, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck, all three of whom co-starred with Fraser in the 1992 antisemitism drama "School Ties." They were all often in competition for the same roles, but they eventually made their own way in the industry. Fraser's square-jawed good looks and comedic gifts landed him leading roles in "The Mummy" and "George of the Jungle,...

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom Cast: Where They Are Now
Image
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom features an excellent cast of talented actors, and many of the film’s most memorable faces went on to have very successful careers after the success of this project. Temple of Doom is the second entry in the Indiana Jones franchise, following the titular protagonist as he attempts to retrieve an ancient stone that’s been stolen from a village in India by a High Priest and his followers. Just like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the movie sees Jones embark on several dangerous adventures and thrilling chases in his pursuit of this treasure.

The Indiana Jones movies are among the most popular and influential of their genre. They were majorly responsible for the boost of blockbuster adventure movies throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, with Temple of Doom, in particular, pushing the series to bolder, more dynamic heights. While it isn’t as...

14 Best Brendan Fraser Movies Ranked
Image
The best Brendan Fraser movies prove that the actor already had a career to be proud of long before his Oscar-winning role in The Whale. Fraser was always seen as one of the most likable actors in Hollywood whose charm and charisma onscreen led to him becoming a star in the 1990s before gradually falling out of favor among the big movie projects. Yet through it all, Brendan Fraser's movies kept reminding audiences of the incredible versatility the actor has, and it was no surprise that he eventually found the right project to bring him back into the spotlight.

Fraser's rise to fame began with broad comedies like Encino Man and Blast From the Past. However, he also showed off his dramatic chops in intense and acclaimed dramas like School Ties and Gods and Monsters. He also became a blockbuster action star thanks to the smash hit The Mummy. Throughout all these movies and beyond,...

Ben Stiller’s screen test for Encino Man has been unveiled
Brendan Fraser
One of the 90s’ most unique high school comedies, Encino Man, is currently getting a surge in recognition, and it’s pretty rad! There has probably never been such a rejoiced and universally pleased result of two Academy Award wins than the great comeback stories of Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan. Both have shown great humility and gratefulness and knowing what they have dealt with, both giving genuinely human performances last year is nothing short of amazing. What’s even more impressive is both had been co-stars in this wacky comedy, and people have been gushing over the reunion.

One thing that Brendan Fraser revealed recently in an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show is that before he got the part of Link in Encino Man, Ben Stiller had screen tested for it. And just a few days ago, low and behold, the official YouTube account of the film...

David Letterman Asks Jimmy Kimmel Why Tom Cruise Wasn’t At Oscars
Image
David Letterman is curious about a missing nominee during Sunday night’s Oscars.

The former “Late Night” host stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” where he asked Kimmel, who hosted Hollywood’s biggest night, where Tom Cruise was during the ceremony.

“Here’s something that’s a little sensitive: Tom Cruise,” Letterman began. “Where was Tom Cruise?”

Cruise’s absence was a tad questionable, considering “Tom Gun: Maverick” earned a total of 6 nominations, with Cruise holding a nomination for Best Picture due to his production credits for the film.

Some reports before the show concluded that Cruise was busy shooting the “Mission: Impossible” sequel in Italy. However, his appearance at Michael Caine’s 90th birthday party in London on Tuesday dampened those rumours.

Hope was on the horizon that the Hollywood A-lister would show...

Ke Huy Quan shares Steven Spielberg’s reaction to his Oscar win during award show ad break
Image
Ke Huy Quan has shared Steven Spielberg’s touching reaction to his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win.

The former child star won an Oscar during Sunday (12 March) night’s ceremony, 39 years after Spielberg cast him as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom when he was 12 years old.

In a twist of fate, during the awards season that has seen Quan pick up several rophies for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Spielberg has also been in attendance at the ceremonies, representing his last film The Fabelmans.

Spielberg was at the Oscars on Sunday, and watched on as Quan gave an emotional acceptance speech.

While Quan, who is now 51, didn’t thank Spielberg as he did during his Golden Globes speech in January, he did approach the director during the ad break.

Quan told Variety that he had shared a big hug with Spielberg, who...

Ke Huy Quan says he ‘blamed’ himself for not landing roles after Indiana Jones success
Image
Ke Huy Quan has opened up about his struggle to find roles following his childhood success in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies.

The Vietnamese-American actor landed his first on-screen credit in the first outing of the Harrison Ford-led franchise in 1984. Shortly after, he appeared in the late director Richard Donner’s 1985 adventure classic.

In the decades proceeding, Quan was forced into a career hiatus because of the lack of roles for Asian actors.

Now 51, the Everything Everywhere All at Once star won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday (12 March).

While speaking to Variety in a new interview about his “surreal” win and Hollywood comeback, Quan further reflected upon the harder years when he “couldn’t get a job”.

“I was taught never to blame anybody. If something doesn’t go the way you want, it’s...

Jimmy Kimmel’s wife addresses Oscars host’s pronunciation of Rihanna after fan confusion
Image
Jimmy Kimmel Live! executive producer Molly McNearney has revealed that her husband Jimmy Kimmel is “obsessed” with correctly pronouncing names.

During Sunday (12 March) night’s live broadcast of the 95th Oscars, the late-night host confused certain viewers when he introduced Rihanna in his opening monologue.

“Rihanna is here,” Kimmel announced, saying her name with a hard “a” – ree-Ann-uh – as opposed to the more commonly used “ree-ah-nuh”.

“It felt funny to people,” McNearney told Variety of Kimmel’s pronunciation of the Oscar-nominated singer’s moniker, however, clarifying that “that is the way you pronounce Rihanna”.

“Now America knows how to pronounce her name, although they won’t. They’ll just assume Jimmy f***ed up, but no, he did not!” she said.

"Jimmy is obsessed with pronouncing people's names correctly," she added. "There is a guy at the show whose job is to find the pronunciations. We always find...

Jimmy Kimmel’s awkward Andrew Garfield joke addressed by Oscars producer
Image
The awkward Andrew Garfield gag at the Oscars has been addressed by the ceremony’s producer.

During the event on Sunday (12 March), host Jimmy Kimmel said there would be no repeat of last year’s slap as he had assembled a crack team to prevent such “violence”.

“You’re gonna have to do battle with Michelle Yeoh before you get to me,” he said, while also listing Creed III actor-director Michael B Jordan, Fabelmans director Steve Spielberg and Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal.

Each actor reacted accordingly, to big cheers from the crowd, but when Kimmel said: “You are gonna have to tangle with Spider-Man!”, the camera cut to Andrew Garfield, who awkwardly grimaced in his seat.

The crowd, who had been cheering each actor, appeared confused, and applauded after a delay. Viewers watching at home reacted to the crowd’s “nasty” reaction. It’s been claimed that the assumption was that Tom Holland,...
