As a number of new Broadway shows gear up for opening and the holiday season, Death Becomes Her, the musical adaptation of the 1992 film, saw a promising early start last week.
The production, starring Jennifer Simard, Megan Hilty and Michelle Williams, brought in $1.07 million in its first week of seven performances, which also included a Halloween tie-in for the supernatural production. The musical is scheduled to open at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Nov. 21.
Sunset Blvd. continued to build on its momentum, with the Nicole Scherzinger-led revival bringing in $1.72 million. That placed it in third position among the industry’s top-grossing shows for the week, besting Hamilton, and playing to close to 95 percent capacity at the St. James Theatre.
Romeo + Juliet, the other new hot ticket, starring Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, brought in just over $1 million in its first full week of performances after opening at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

Despite a career with varying celebrated roles, Isabella Rossellini has never received an Academy Award nomination. This year, fans and critics alike are hoping that changes with her latest film, “Conclave.”
At the Middleburg Film Festival, the iconic actress graced the grounds of the Salamander Resort to promote “Conclave,” directed by Edward Berger. Interviewed there for the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Rossellini gave astounding insights into her iconic career, discussed her latest role, and reflected on the intricate dance between artistic expression and the commercial pressures that define the film industry. Listen below.
In “Conclave,” Rossellini plays Sister Agnes, a nun who subtly navigates the power dynamics within the Catholic Church while selecting a new Pope. The role allowed Rossellini to embody subservience and authority through a reserved yet respectful demeanor. She described infusing Sister Agnes with “authority through silence and modesty,” capturing the tension between reverence and influence many women experience within patriarchal institutions.

As a commercially oriented, artistically ambitious, innovation-embracing filmmaker, Robert Zemeckis enjoyed an unparalleled pre-21st century career where box-office, critic-approved hits far outweighed the occasional misses or missteps. Awards recognition wasn't a matter of if, but when. Nominated for several Academy Awards, Zemeckis won a Best Director award in 1994 for Forrest Gump. As Forrest Gump's title character, Tom Hanks won his second back-to-back acting (Hanks won his first for Philadelphia a year earlier). Seven years later, a second Zemeckis-Hanks collaboration, Cast Away, proved almost as commercially and artistically rewarding. It was The Polar Express, their third time as director and actor (motion-captured via relatively new tech) that doubled as the first major misstep...

Robert Zemeckis reunites with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright for an ugly de-aged nightmare that boringly follows the same house throughout time
A swirl of concern and outright fear has long been following Robert Zemeckis’s unusual big bet Here, a 30-year reunion for his Forrest Gump co-stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The film, based on Richard McGuire’s comic strip turned graphic novel, was heralded as the most ambitious use of digital de-aging yet, following the pair through the decades, from teenage years to final days, as part of an ensemble of characters who have lived in the same space over time. Early stills, and a trailer, had clued us into the film being plainly terrifying but nothing had quite prepared us for just how unforgivably dull it would also be. Here lies the year’s most eerie and embarrassing misfire.

It’s been almost forty years since Robert Zemeckis made time travel hilarious and fascinating with the blockbuster “Back to the Future.” That was a film about a 1980s teenager traveling back to the 1950s and observing the not-so-subtle changes that befell his hometown and family in the last three decades. And also, his teenage mom tries really hard to sleep with him. It’s a weird film, if we’re being honest.
Zemeckis has had an interesting relationship with time throughout most of his films. “Forrest Gump” attempts to track, through a smug and somewhat condescending lens, the whole second half of the 20th century. His horror comedy “Death Becomes Her” explores the comical vanity that underlies our fear of aging and mortality. “A Christmas Carol” is a tale of personal growth and regret through supernatural time-hopping. The list goes on and on, and it’s led him all the way here.

The great actress Isabella Rossellini was the face of Lancôme beauty for more than a decade beginning in the early 1980s, but strangely, if you look back, rarely is she the lead in any of her iconic films.
Sometimes a shadow, sometimes on the periphery, a Rossellini character is nonetheless always knowing, from tragic lounge singer Dorothy Vallens in her then-partner David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” to ethereal beauty whisperer Lisle Von Rhuman in Robert Zemeckis’ “Death Becomes Her” and a wealthy Italian widow who dates below her station in David O. Russell’s “Joy.”
In Edward Berger’s papal potboiler “Conclave,” Rossellini has fewer lines than ever — and probably they could fit on one page — as Sister Agnes. Here is a glowering nun who has seen some shit. French director and screenwriter Coralie Fargeat is back with a bang after her 2017 debut feature film “Revenge.” A powerful voice in reiterating gender issues, her works challenge societal norms and gender stereotypes, often exploring themes of rebirth, female empowerment, and the complexities of human nature. In her sophomore feature “The Substance” (2024), she continues her winning streak with her characteristic “blunt, bloody, and stylish” films, which are a fusion of exploitation and feminism.
It is a mind-blowing and gasp-inducing farcical film belonging to the genre of body horror/splatter film that challenges stereotypical conceptions of body image, beauty standards, and aging. In “The Substance,” Coralie Fargeat refashions the Jekyll and Hyde trope to develop a story in which a fading celebrity Elisabeth Sparkle uses a cell-replicating injectable substance to swap bodies with a younger, hotter, better version of herself. Australian actress Nicole Kidman began her professional career in 1983 with an appearance in the holiday film "Bush Christmas," and followed it immediately with Brian Trenchard-Smith's very watchable teens-rule actioner "BMX Bandits." She was 16 at the time. Kidman was a striking screen presence, however, and she immediately began a busy career that hasn't slowed since. For six years, Kidman was all over Aussie TV and cinema, with the actress finally breaking into Hollywood in 1989 with her role in the taut thriller "Dead Calm." In 1990, she was cast opposite Tom Cruise in Tony Scott's "Days of Thunder," and her superstar status was cemented. She also began dating Cruise that year, and they married in 1990, staying one of Hollywood's most visible power couples for a decade.

Very few things can inspire the feeling of youth like a music video that immortalizes the trends and culture of the times. And they’ve come a long way from projections of still images paired with a live performance.
People were wildin’ out with their puffy leg-of-mutton sleeves in 1894, part of the decade called the “Gay Nineties” to the song, “Little Lost Child.”
We have the ’60s and ’70s to thank for advancing us from the methods of the “Naughty Nineties.” These are real names for the 1890s. Let that sink in.

Due to its namesake, it didn’t take long before film and TV became the special sauce in crafting some visual masterpieces.
Over the years, that trend has only grown, with artists of countless genres jumping on the bandwagon.

Isabella Rossellini will be honoured during the upcoming European Film Awards with a career award celebrating her body of work as an actor and filmmaker.
The Italian model and movie star, who is the daughter of Swedish actor Ingrid Bergman and Italian director Roberto Rossellini, made her acting debut in 1979 in the Taviani brothers’ film “Il Prato” before breaking out internationally in David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” in 1986, followed by prominent roles in films such as Taylor Hackford’s “White Nights,” Robert Zemeckis’s “Death Becomes Her,” and Peter Weir’s “Fearless,” to name a few.
Rossellini, who is 72, has more recently resurfaced as a standout character actress, with meaty parts in Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera,” alongside Josh O’ Connor, “Spaceman” with Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan, and Edward Berger’s soon-to-be-released “Conclave” in which she plays a scene-stealing nun.

Italian actress Isabella Rossellini will receive the European Achievement in World Cinema award, a lifetime achievement honor, at this year’s European Film Awards.
The Italian-American star, daughter of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman and Italian film director Roberto Rossellini, was a successful fashion model — famously for French cosmetics brand Lancôme — before shifting into acting. Her first leading role came in the Taviani brothers’ drama The Meadow (1979), but her international breakout was David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986) in which she played the mysterious and tortured nightclub singer Dorothy Vallens. The performance, in which Rossellini also sang the film’s titular tune, won her the Independent Spirit Award for best female lead.
Over the next four decades, Rossellini carved out a unique career in cinema, moving between big-budget features — Robert Zemeckis’ Death Becomes Her (1992), Peter Weir’s Fearless (1993) — and independent auteur films, working with Peter Greenaway (2003’s The Tulse Luper Suitcases), Guy...

Woman of Substance: Fargeat Rejuvenates Body Horror with Pulpy Parable
To borrow a succinct phrase from Beyonce, ‘pretty hurts,’ a sentiment quivering through Coraline Fargeat’s morbidly entertaining sophomore feature, The Substance. Its simplistic title eventually reveals itself to be a vicious bit of irony, considering it refers to a magical titular potion which seems fashioned for those who are actually lacking substance, their worth defined solely by the superficiality of youth and beauty. Los Angeles turns out to be ground zero for this unique riff on Death Becomes Her (1992), plus a formidable array of other cult titles in what is essentially a ‘be careful what you wish for’ moral fable.…...

This article contains massive spoilers for "The Substance."
Tales of the folly of beauty have been told since time immemorial. Once human beings understood the irreconcilable fact that youth and beauty are natural attractants even though the ravages of time and age are impossible to hold back, cautionary stories of characters either looking to hold on to their beauty forever or simply trying to recapture it have cropped up. These are stories with characters who become so obsessed with their own vanity that they're willing to commit crimes or atrocities in order to maintain it are viewed as people who've fallen from grace, their external beauty masking their internal corruption.
In recent decades, these tales have grown a new wrinkle, as they've absorbed the effects that society, industry, and the media have had on reinforcing such damaging ideals. Just using cinematic examples, there've been films such as "Looker," "Death Becomes Her,...

Max Minghella’s “Shell” follows in the grand tradition of lurid comedies, like Robert Zemeckis’ “Death Becomes Her,” which satirizes societal pressures on women to look youthful and vital into the later stages of life. “Shell” is purposefully designed to be campy, silly, fun—mainstream entertainment with topical bite. And Minghella largely succeeds in his admittedly modest ambitions. It’s too bad he’s had his lunch eaten by Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” a film with an identical premise and analogous execution but a much higher profile.

The brand new musical Death Becomes Her will be premiering on Broadway next month and the production just debuted some epic character posters.
Megan Hilty, Jennifer Simard, Michelle Williams, and Christopher Sieber each have two separate posters, one showing their character at the beginning of the musical and the other showing an “after” image following the events in the show.
If you have seen the classic movie, you’ll get the humor in each photo!
Madeline Ashton (Hilty) is the most beautiful actress (just ask her) ever to grace the stage and screen. Helen Sharp (Simard) is the long-suffering author (just ask her) who lives in her shadow. They have always been the best of frenemies… until Madeline steals Helen’s fiancé (Sieber) away. As Helen plots revenge and Madeline clings to her rapidly fading star, their world is suddenly turned upside down by Viola Van Horn (Williams), a mysterious...

Kate Hudson had to come out of her shell for her scene-stealing turn in Max Minghella’s TIFF-selected dark comedy “Shell.”
The feature, which was written and directed by Minghella and is led his “Handmaid’s Tale” co-star Elisabeth Moss, marks Minghella’s sophomore feature after his 2018 directorial debut “Teen Spirit.”
For Hudson, working with longtime family friend Minghella helped push her into the territory of camp onscreen. Hudson plays a guru-adjacent beauty cosmetics company CEO who enlists an aging actress (Moss) as a client. However, the company has a dark secret…
Kaia Gerber, Arian Moayed, Este Haim, and Elizabeth Berkley also star.

Sabrina Carpenter gave viewers a taste of what she’s made of on Wednesday, performing a few of the summer’s biggest songs at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
Seated atop a glittery swing, Carpenter was lowered onto the VMAs stage while she treated the audience to some ethereal vocals on “Please Please Please.” Once she had her feet on the ground, it was straight into her new single “Taste.” After some Pda with an alien (because why not!), she then segued into her monster hit “Espresso.”

Isabella Rossellini wanted the “Death Becomes Her” set to be a shared experience, even if she wasn’t the one disrobing onscreen.
The actress told Variety that while she didn’t believe she was fit enough at the time to show off her rear end in one sequence of the film, which co-starred Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, Rossellini didn’t want her body double to feel abandoned at all.
“I went up to my double and I said, ‘I will stay here in my trailer. If you need me, just let me know and I’ll come out and be here with you,'” Rossellini said. “I was there like a mother saying, ‘I’m here to protect you.’”
Rossellini previously told Vulture that there was a “bodily nudity” to the scene in question.

We seem to be living through a golden age of Death Becomes Her fandom.
The Robert Zemeckis black comedy was a box office hit when it first hit theaters in 1992, and has since been embraced by a legion of LGBTQ film lovers, many of whom see the campy Meryl Streep vehicle as a “cornerstone of Queer culture.” These days, Death Becomes Her seems to be everywhere. There’s the musical adaptation, which is coming soon to Broadway…

“I’m warning you: She loves to dominate a teddy bear,” Demi Moore says as her teacup Chihuahua, Pilaf, toddles into the room. Moore, perched on a kitchen stool in her Los Angeles home, watches her dog with a sly smile. “You’re going to see some humping.”
Pilaf has had a busy year — she was featured in Vogue, and seen in the front rows of Paris Fashion Week — so bringing her to the Cannes Film Festival in May was a risk: Would the pint-size bundle of cuteness upstage her owner at the premiere of her blood-drenched horror film “The Substance”? Perhaps Moore knew the role was more beastly than her little pet could ever be.
“I didn’t know how the movie was going to go,” Moore admits as Pilaf, now in the family room, ravages her stuffed animal in a patch of sunlight. “It’s so out of the box.

At the very start of the noughties, the horror genre was churning out some decent, if unspectacular movies. We saw the re-emergence of the spoof with the first entry in the Scary Movie franchise, Pinhead and co. continued to wreak spiky havoc in Hellraiser: Inferno, while the werewolf genre would get revived with the fun and well received Ginger Snaps. We also got a pretty poor Blair Witch sequel, and let’s face it, the first movie in that series only got traction due to an ingenious marketing campaign, and the media spouting bollocks about people being sick in the cinema from shock. Not the incredibly shaky camera work. Requiem for a Dream provided some messed up thrills, as did the similarly perverted Hollow Man. However, for every decent horror movie that was released, we also got howlers like Da Hip Hop Witch with Eminem. My point is, what the...

Sabrina Carpenter, among the pop princesses of the summer, whose songs “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” dethroned each other on the coveted top spots of the Billboard 100 chart, is a known cinephile. Her latest music video for “Taste,” the third single off of her studio album Short n’ Sweet, is chock-full of references to classic horror films like Death Becomes Her and Kill Bill: Volume 1.

Sabrina Carpenter is back with another music video folks can’t stop talking about, and this time, she’s joined by “Wednesday” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” star Jenna Ortega. Fittingly, the video is full of horror, camp and cult classic movie references — and we’ve put together a handy list to guide you through them.
1. “Death Becomes Her”
This is the most overt reference and it runs throughout the video, as “Taste” has a few references to Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep’s 1992 dark comedy. Most obviously, the core conceit of two unkillable women fighting to the would-be death over one man, as well as the iconic costuming.
There’s also the whole shotgun sequence, which heavily tips its hat to “Death Becomes Her,” right down to the hole left in Carpenter’s torso — a parallel to Goldie Hawn’s unforgettable “I have a hole in my stomach” scene — and the shot peering right through it.

Sabrina Carpenter’s big secret is out. During her appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Thursday, Carpenter discussed her “secret” music video for her latest song “Taste” and spilled a bit on how Jenna Ortega came to be involved in the project.
“[The video] was inspired by one of my favorite films, and she was a huge fan of the film,” Carpenter said of Ortega. “I’m so excited for you guys to see this video, you have no idea. I think it’s my favorite one I’ve ever done.”
The music video for “Taste” seems to clearly be based on the 1992 Robert Zemeckis black comedy, “Death Becomes Her.” The video starts with a parental advisory for “graphic violence” before showing Carpenter eyeing a selection of lovingly organized weapons placed upon a pink bed.
As she sings “Oh, I leave quite an impression / Five feet to be exact,...

If you don’t know, both Jenna and Sabrina got their start on the Disney Channel with Sabrina starring in Girl Meets World, while Jenna was the lead of Stuck in the Middle. Seeing two Disney stars go from that image to a camp-slasher music video isn’t something that was expected, but was very much needed!
Sabrina opens the video by singing a familiar lullaby, only to change up the words to, “Rockabye baby, snug in your bed. Right now you are sleeping and soon you’ll be… dead.”
When the video begins, Sabrina sneaks up into the bedroom of...

It’s a packed fall for NYC theater fans, with highly anticipated musical adaptations of beloved movies “Death Becomes Her” and “Teeth,” among others, set to premiere.
As is customary, there are also plenty of marquee names ready to tackle Broadway, from debuts such as Robert Downey Jr. in “McNeal,” to thrilling returns, like Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone in “The Roommate.” And — though technically beyond Broadway — favorites like Adam Driver and Kenneth Branagh will also be appearing this fall on the NYC stage.
The weather hasn’t even changed yet, but it’s safe to say the biggest success of the season has already happened, with the brilliant Cole Escola in “Oh Mary.” The play was a downtown smash last spring, but the comedy — written by and starring Escola as Mary Todd Lincoln at the end of the Civil War — has now become a somewhat surprising breakout mainstream hit,...

Wyatt Russell was born to Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn on July 10, 1986, eight days after "Big Trouble in Little China," his pop's third and lamentably final big-screen collaboration with John Carpenter, bombed at the box office. The martial arts action-fantasy movie didn't seriously damage Russell's career, but it did alter its trajectory a tad. Just about everything after "Big Trouble in Little China" was a two-hander or an ensemble piece. Though he could still mess around in nonsense like "Overboard" and "Captain Ron," he couldn't dominate a movie with a broad, endearingly dopey hero like Jack Burton anymore.
Kurt Russell has many different modes, but I grew up with a preference for his swaggering himbos, guys who were so supremely confident in their capabilities that, like Wile E. Coyote, they didn't realize how far off the edge of the cliff they'd run. Watching a lug like Burton scramble out of...
