Prior to the 2000s’ live-action superhero boom, the ’90s marked a significant shift for this genre, as both DC and Marvel were on a roll with gems like Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men: The Animated Series. But amidst the plethora of action cartoons that revolved around pre-established IPs, the ’90s were also no stranger to original superhero shows, which involved Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron.
Created by Christian and Yvon Tremblay, the show was notable for gearing toward a more mature tone with its action and themes, and even though its tenure was short-lived, its impact still lives on through its cult following. With the two on board to embark on a new chapter of the classic show, the Tremblay brothers reflected on their inspirations for the show’s rogues’ gallery during an exclusive interview with Fandomwire at Mumbai Comic Con.

Star Wars franchise star John Boyega is ready to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While he was initially unsure who he should play in the shared universe, a fan helped him realize who he'd be perfect for.
During a chat with Josh Horowitz at C2E2 (via Agents of Fandom), Boyega was asked by a fan if there was anyone he'd be interested in playing in the MCU. The actor shared that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige once asked him that question too, and he didn't have an answer for the studio head at the time. This prompted a fan to yell out that Boyega should play Bishop in the X-Men reboot, to which the actor instantly agreed. "Oh, I'd play Bishop," he remarked.

Actor Audri Dubois detailed her experience while filming "Day of the Dumpster", the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers promo pilot. That episode's tight budget had production cutting corners, which led to working conditions that were "a little abusive to the actors".
Power Rangers star Audri Dubois said the show's working conditions were so severe, one of the actors suffered heat stroke. Dubois played Trini Kwan/Yellow Ranger in the original version of "Day of the Dumpster", the show's original (unaired) pilot; she was replaced by Thuy Trang in the reshot episode, which premiered Aug. 28, 1993 on the Fox network. "When we're shooting the pilot, we're out in the desert — it's got to be 110 degrees — and someone has heat stroke," Dubois recalled (per Entertainment Weekly). "It was one of the bad guys in a wet suit with a rubber mask over their head with pinholes for the eyes and mouth. He's flopping around like a fish.

Channing Tatum has finally talked about his involvement inAvengers: Doomsday, but is he actually playing Gambit? After years of trying to get a Gambit solo film off the ground, Tatum finally realized his lifelong dream of playing the iconic X-Men character in Deadpool & Wolverine. Tatum's Gambit was a scene-stealer, and many were shocked but delighted to see Tatum's name on the Avengers: Doomsday cast list.
At Cinema Con, Tatum spoke to Extra about his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday. Despite everyone assuming Tatum is playing Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday, Tatum did play coy with the fact that no character names were confirmed, only the actors involved. He says he might not be playing Gambit but a different character. However, he also doesn't deny he is playing Gambit. I'm just pointing out how nobody confirmed anything outside of the fact that he is in the movie. Tatum said:
"Personally, all I was guaranteed was a chair.

It seems that X marks the spot in Avengers: Doomsday, as fans of the original lineup of X-Men from Fox’s noughties era are in for a treat. While we know there’s not room for everyone, the lengthy Doomsday cast reveal confirmed the return of series staples Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart as Magneto and Professor X, joined by Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, James Marsden’s Cyclops, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique. Finally, more classic X-Men are officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The official Marvel Studios Instagram confirmed, “There’s always room for more,” in terms of others being added to the 27-strong Doomsday cast. More than just missing MCU mainstays like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, a host of the Fox-era X-Men could be suiting up in the shadows. Devil May Cry's Dante is a creature of the 2000s, and creator Adi Shankar has made sure his new anime series maintains that time period connection.
"I wanted the show to be really dark, very noir, a lot of shadows, like every '90s anime that went too hard," Shankar told Animation Magazine about developing the Netflix series, partnering with South Korea's Studio Mir to bring this new chapter in Dante's demon-hunting world to life. His desired story, however, "didn't really fit that vibe, because I was wanting to tell a story that was very inspired by early-2000s Hollywood blockbusters, before everything started getting preachy and watered-down. Like Mission: Impossible 2, John Woo movies, Replacement Killers, Equilibrium. The overall mood and vibe that I had in my mind was in conflict with the type of story I wanted to tell, so I had to table that for later.

For the second month in a row, an alien parasite has merged with Spider-Man's costume and created a fierce black-suited web-slinger in Funko Pop! form. Funko and Target are introducing two new collectibles as part of their Marvel Selects line that not only homage to Spidey's iconic symbiote suit but also one of his greatest foes, the Green Goblin. Instead of more Comic Cover figures, however, both characters are rendered as they appeared in the beloved Spider-Man: The Animated Series from 1994. Ahead of their release on store shelves in April, Collider can share an exclusive look at the new items swinging into Funko's eye-watering collection of wall-crawler goodies.
Spider-Man's symbiote suit had a slightly different look in the classic animated show than the one donned by Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. The figure replicates a completely solid black appearance, only interrupted by the bright white...

In an era where adult animation enjoys remarkable popularity and longevity, could another classic (albeit short-lived) 1990s animated sitcom make a comeback?
Jon Lovitz thinks so.
On Friday, the comedian said that he and creator Al Jean are developing a revival of The Critic, the series in which Lovitz played the film critic and Coming Attractions TV host Jay Sherman.
“You keep telling me you want it back. I’ve been trying for years! Well, now, creator Al Jean is on board!!!” Lovitz posted.
Despite hailing from a slew of veterans from The Simpsons (including Jean, Mike Reiss, and James L. Brooks, who produced the show via his Gracie Films), the show never achieved Simpsons-level success, only airing 13 episodes over two seasons on ABC and later Fox.
It frequently parodied the entertainment business, with Sherman reviewing fake films (his catchphrase was “It stinks!”), and his boss, Duke Phillips, not-so-subtly inspired by Ted Turner.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" was a big surprise -- not that it would be a hugely successful blockbuster hit, but that the film's approach to cameos and guest appearances would actually have some thematic substance to it. The movie spends most of its runtime in The Void from "Loki," where discarded, unwanted aberrations go to die. Except there's more. In the movie, the people we meet in The Void are characters from 20th Century Fox movies. Not the fan-favorite characters from beloved and influential hits like "X-Men," but rather Jennifer Garner's Elektra, Chris Evans' Johnny Storm from "Fantastic Four," and of course, Channing Tatum's Gambit from the unproduced "Gambit" movie.
His cameo doesn't exactly feel like a logical fit, as his character never even made it to the screen before this and the only audience members who would understand the joke are those who read sites like /Film and...

In the absence of Bryan Singer, who took off to DC to helm Superman Returns, director Brett Ratner had some huge shoes to fill with The Last Stand, which was coming off the success of two revered releases. But unlike X-Men and X2, which heavily contributed to the superhero boom of the 2000s, the threequel marked a low point for the franchise.

If you’re a fan of Daredevil: Born Again, there are a few shows that are fun to check out!
Fans of Daredevil are loving the return of the Man Without Fear via Daredevil: Born Again. The revival of the Netflix series has Charlie Cox once more playing Matt Murdock and his costumed alter ego in a show that already boasts some wild twists and turns.
Obviously, fans will have likely checked out other Netflix Marvel shows, such as Jessica Jones, The Punisher, The Defenders, and others. Maybe even She-Hulk: Attorney at Law which had Cox guest starring. However, there are a few shows out there that can appeal to Daredevil fans. While some are superhero shows, others are unique takes on a crime saga while also boasting action heroes with a mystical edge. If you love Daredevil: Born Again, make way for these ten shows to feel that same fun vibe!

X-Menhas been getting a lot of love from Marvel lately. Since 20th Century Fox was bought by Disney, mutants and the X-Men brand have slowly been making appearances in the MCU. This includes projects like Ms. Marvel, The Marvels and Deadpool & Wolverine. However, arguably the most beloved thing in the last number of years pertaining to this side of the Marvel universe has been the reboot ofX-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ‘97. Season 1 of the series was a major critical and commercial success for Disney. That also caused a ton of merchandise to be released for this nostalgic show. Now, Mondo has re-entered the X-Mansion with their latest X-Men ‘97 figure.
A part of Mondo's WonderCon 2025 collection, their new X-Men ‘97 figure is of Wolverine in his brown and tan suit. Specifically, based on the Season 1 finale “Tolerance Is Existence”, the “Pryde of the X-Men" Wolverine is a...

On Mar. 12, 2025, it was announced that Stranger Things star Sadie Sink had joined the cast of the highly anticipated Spider-Man 4. This news was shocking because Sink was previously rumored to be Marvel Studios' top choice to play Jean Grey in the McU's upcoming X-Men reboot. It isn't unheard of for an actor to be considered for one role only to end up with another, and there certainly is precedent for it between X-Men and Spider-Man properties, like in 2010 when Michael Fassbender was being eyed to play both Magneto in X-Men: First Class and Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man, with him accepting the former.
Yet the fact that the news of Sink's casting for Spider-Man 4 did not mention a character and Sink's previous status as the top contender to play Jean Grey might suggest big plans for the upcoming Spider-Man movie. While there are...

It’s a great time to be an X-Men fan — the comics behemoth has seen a resurgence in public consciousness thanks to the revival of the much-loved X-Men: The Animated Series. Ever since its announcement, X-Men ’97 has gathered fans, old and new, and the voice cast has played a pivotal role in winning the fans over once again.
Veteran actor George Buza, the voice of Hank McCoy/Beast, was at Toronto Comicon sharing in the love of the show and the X-Men universe. As we wait for season 2 of X-Men '97 to finally arrive, let's take a look at Buza's experiences on the show and with the character of Beast.

X-Men '97, the well-received revival of X-Men: The Animated Series, rewarded fans with both the strongest writing that Marvel's mutants have received on television in years, as well as the return of many classic voice actors. One such actress is Lenore Zann, who voiced Rogue in the original series. Zann recently discussed the series' upcoming second and third seasons, providing much-anticipated updates.
Speaking with Collider, Zahn revealed that the cast has "finished recording Season 2, and that will be coming out in 2026." Continuing, she also added: "I'm about to start to go into the studio next week to start on season three, so I've got lots to look forward to."
Notably, X-Men '97 creator Beau DeMayo was fired from the production and stripped of his credits on the show. Season 2 onward will feature Matthew Chauncy as showrunner. During the same interview, Zann opened up about her feelings on the new writing team.

Saturday morning cartoons are a staple of television that has been lost as streaming sites become more and more popular. However, the tradition of airing cartoons on Saturday and Sunday mornings lasted from the '60s to most of the '90s. Even though most children don't watch open television anymore, this tradition still continues on some networks, and sites like YouTube often offer dedicated channels solely for beloved cartoons of yesteryear.
Since a lot of people grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, it makes sense that some of the most beloved animated series come from this programming. From oldies like Tom & Jerry to epic superhero shows like X-Men: The Animated Series, these cartoons will forever live in fans' hearts. They make great nostalgic viewing, and while adult eyes may look at them differently than younger ones did, they still hold plenty of joys to be revisited.

Rogue voice actor Lenore Zann touched upon X-Men '97 Season 3. This comes after X-Men '97 got a disappointing Season 2 update.

Superheroes thrive in animation. The medium is uniquely positioned to capture the visual possibilities and sheer imagination of comic books without having to compromise anything. It's the reason the highest-rated superhero show of all time on IMDb is a cartoon. As we have seen time and time again, from the masterpiece that is "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" to the gripping drama of "X-Men '97," animation can serve these stories in a way that live-action can't.
Still, that doesn't mean every effort is a home run. For every "Batman: The Animated Series," there's a "Batman Unlimited." While the '90s saw plenty of masterful cartoons based on superheroes, even Marvel ones with "X-Men: The Animated Series" and "Spider-Man," there was still something missing — The Avengers. So, in the late '90s, Fox Kids decided to fix this grave mistake and create an Avengers cartoon. Before the show could get greenlit, however,...

A slew of animated superhero shows in the 90s came to define how the characters were remembered by an entire generation. Be it, Superman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, or X-Men: The Animated Series, these versions of the characters greatly influenced later iterations of them, something that fans have enjoyed a lot through the years.

When it comes to the X-Men, it doesn't get bigger - or better - than Wolverine. As Logan himself said in Deadpool and Wolverine, he is the X-Man. The truth is that when the vast majority of us think about Marvel's Mightiest Mutants, "Wolvie" is the first one that comes to mind - and that really says a lot about his popularity because he's technically not even the leader of the iconic team.
There is a lot to love about the character, even if you have to look beyond his gruff exterior. Renowned for his monosyllabic conversations, perpetual bad mood, adamantium skeleton and razor sharp claws, Logan has endured over the years to become not just one of the most popular Marvel Comics characters of all time, but one of the biggest pop-culture phenomenons in history.
That's largely due to how successfully has has translated to other mediums, particularly TV and film.

Some see Marvel Comics' heyday as either the Silver Age of Comics or the 1980s, with the latter being an era where almost every major character and franchise had great ongoing titles. The 1990s were a much more infamous decade, both for Marvel and comic books as a whole. Grim and gritty were in, and this saw several characters in the Marvel Universe hit it bigger than others.
The 1990s catapulted several Marvel heroes and antiheroes into stardom, be they X-Ceptional mutants or symbiotic Lethal Protectors. This time period defined Marvel's X-Men in particular, and they had just the right amount of edge for the era. The same was true for various vigilantes and antiheroes, who shined brighter than ever in the Dark Ages of Comics.

When people think of superhero shows, they often think of the DC Animated Universe, the CW's Arrowverse, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, or X-Men: The Animated Series. While those franchises helped establish many superhero icons, there are plenty of superhero shows that the average person doesn’t know exist. A quick cancelation is often one of the biggest reasons, but sometimes it simply comes down to people not being familiar with the IP.
Sticking to only Batman and Spider-Man is a sure way to overlook a wealth of great content. Even within popular franchises, there are series that many people don’t know exist. With over ten Spider-Man shows alone, there are bound to be quality superhero series that have been forgotten or never discovered.

En Sabah Nur, a.k.a. Apocalypse is Marvel Comics' oldest mutant. People will say it’s Namor because he was created first, but Apocalypse’s comic book origin used to date back to the days of the Egyptian pyramids. However, during the X-Men event X of Swords, fans learn he’s been around longer. Apocalypse is thousands of years old and not just a mutant. He’s one of the original mutants called the Arakkii. A more powerful and determined group of homo-superior.
The history of En Sabah Nur has changed over the years, but one thing remains: He’s among the strongest villains to have ever lived. He does this by becoming more powerful and smarter and upgrading his abilities. It makes sense since he lives by the idea that only the strong can survive. Granted, he’s learned that being the strongest is more than winning a...

Daredevil: Born Again will adopt the tone and pacing of Netflix's The Punisher series. There's also less downtime and more action scenes packed into the brisk narrative.
Showrunner Dario Scardapane said Daredevil: Born Again will be more fast-paced than the Netflix series. Previously an executive producer for Netflix's The Punisher, he's now adopted that show's approach with the Daredevil reboot. "One of our edicts [in The Punisher] was longer scenes," he told GamesRadar. "You had these long five-page scenes of characters hashing it out in order to make space between these massive action sequences. The way stuff has evolved since then, we're able to do big action sequences at a lot more pace." The trailers confirm this shift, different yet still faithful to the Marvel comics.

Anticipation is building for the X-Men's arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The legendary mutants have been an integral part of comic book history for decades, and they made the jump to the big screen in 2000 with 20th Century Fox's game-changing movie series that ran for almost two decades. But now, they are slowly making their way to the biggest movie franchise of all time.
Marvel Studios is actively developing an X-Men movie in the MCU. It's expected to arrive in movie theaters in either 2028 or shortly after it, as the franchise's new chapter will have begun at that stage. The two upcoming Avengers movies will close out the Multiverse Saga, but that saga has also been imperative in opening the door for the X-Men's arrival, particularly due to the return of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

Beau DeMayo had a tough time at Marvel, as was evident by the very public falling out that the X-Men ’97 writer had with Marvel Studios. However, the writer has now come out with the story of another actor that Marvel had mistreated, despite his legendary status in Hollywood.

Gil Birmingham, known for his amazing work on Yellowstone and then some, found his part removed from Thor: Love and Thunder, where the actor was set to play a Native American god. However, Birmingham was not made aware of the cut until he appeared at the premiere of the film. Beau DeMayo revealed the hoops that he had to jump through to get the actor back onboard, despite his falling out with Marvel Studios.

Beau DeMayo, who initially led as the showrunner and head writer for X-Men ’97, parted ways with Marvel Animation before finishing the second season. According to Marvel Studios, he was fired due to allegations of sexual misconduct. However, DeMayo claims that his dismissal was retaliation for calling out racist and unethical behavior within the studio.
DeMayo has made several serious accusations against Marvel Studios. One of DeMayo’s most striking allegations involves the casting of Storm. While some roles from X-Men: The Animated Series were recast, Allison Sealy Smith returned to voice Ororo Munroe. DeMayo asserts that this wasn’t Marvel’s original plan.
He claims the executives initially wanted an actor who sounded more ‘African’ and even cast someone else, as seen in Marvel Studios: Assembled – The Making Of X-Men ’97. They later reversed this decision, considering it a mistake.

Few franchises have been as integral to the evolution of the superhero movie genre as X-Men, which helped usher in a new era of comic book movies alongside films like Blade and Spider-Man. The X-Men's cultural prominence has only continued with shows like Disney+'s X-Men '97, a revival of Fox's 1990s cartoon X-Men: The Animated Series, as well as Ryan Reynolds' hugely successful Deadpool & Wolverine, which saw his merc-with-a-mouth finally teaming up with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, for their long-awaited buddy movie.

Though certainly iconic, there are some parts of X-Men: The Animated Series that haven’t stood the test of time. X-Men: Tas is one of the most cherished Marvel projects, bringing to life Marvel's famed X-Men and their plight against a world that hates and fears them. However, several aspects of X-Men: The Animated Series have aged poorly.
X-Men: The Animated Series, which aired from 1992 to 1997, remains one of the most beloved adaptations of Marvel’s mutant saga. Praised for its serialized storytelling, complex characters, and faithfulness to the comics, the show was a game-changer for superhero cartoons. However, revisiting the series decades later reveals some aspects that haven’t aged well. From animation hiccups to narrative missteps, certain elements of the show now feel dated or problematic. While it’s still a nostalgic treasure trove, it’s worth examining the parts of X-Men: Tas that fall short by today’s standards.

Marvel Studios Animation had a successful 2024 based on X-Men ’97 alone. The return of the beloved 1990s cartoon was exciting for Marvel fans, especially the ones who grew up watching X-Men: The Animated Series every Saturday morning, but no one could have expected X-Men ’97 to defy all expectations the way it did.
Marvel’s animated division completely upped the ante with the story, the mutants, and their powers, all without betraying the foundational elements that were laid down 30 years prior. If that made this show less “family entertainment” than it used to be, then that was a sacrifice worth making, just like Gambit’s heroic sacrifice in the unforgettable chapter “Remember It” that cemented X-Men ’97 as one of the best animated series of all time.

Despite its success in depicting many beloved X-Men characters and Marvel villains, some significant figures were markedly underutilized by X-Men: The Animated Series. X-Men: The Animated Series is often hailed as one of the greatest adaptations of Marvel Comics. It brought iconic storylines to life, from the Dark Phoenix Saga to Days of Future Past, and introduced a generation to the mutant team’s struggles for equality. Yet, some awesome Marvel characters were overlooked or barely featured in this legendary series.
The creators of X-Men: The Animated Series had the monumental task of condensing decades of comic book lore into an accessible format for Saturday morning audiences. With time constraints, budget limitations, and a primary focus on the core X-Men team, many characters were left on the cutting room floor. While favorites like Wolverine, Rogue, and Storm received substantial screen time, several pivotal comic characters either made cameo appearances or were squandered.

Remy LeBeau aka Gambit has been a prominent member of the X-Men since the ‘90s, and not just in the comics, either. Gambit has appeared in both animated series and live-action films, from X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ‘97, to X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Deadpool & Wolverine. As Power Rangers and other Saban properties find new life, it is time to revisit their answer to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The 1990s and early 2000s were a golden age of nostalgic shows, movies, and video games, many of which are now being rediscovered by devoted fans. While classics like Power Rangers, Big Bad Beetleborgs, and Goosebumps often steal the spotlight, plenty of other shows deserve another moment to shine. Big Wolf on Campus may have faded into obscurity, but it does not have to stay that way. With enough love, support, and perhaps a loyal fan campaign, the world could show that Big Wolf on Campus was more than just a phase; it is a legacy worth returning to.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Marvel Studios' 'What If...?.'2024 was the year Marvel Studios fully embraced having the film and television rights to the X-Men franchise back and the studio’s final release of the year, the third and final season of the animated series What If…? followed in the footsteps of earlier projects, integrating the mutant-focused X-Men mythology into its world and narrative. In addition to giving a supporting role to a variant of X-Man Ororo Munroe/Storm, with Alison Sealy-Smith again voicing the character she famously portrays in X-Men: The Animated Series and its acclaimed sequel, X-Men ’97, the season makes several references, both overt and subtle, to other characters and concepts from the X-Men lore. Marvel's mutants are once again dominating animation, and it's the perfect time to revisit an under-appreciated X-Men cartoon that ended way back in 2003. X-Men: The Animated Series is back in public discourse, and for a good reason. While expectations were high for X-Men '97, few predicted that it would be one of Marvel's better projects of all time - animated or otherwise.
However, while X-Men: The Animated Series is rightfully iconic, it's far from the team's only show well-worth watching. Marvel's 2025 slate for the MCU will begin with a show relatively similar to What If...? season 3. Marvel Studios released only one MCU movie in 2024 — Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned itself a spot among the Marvel Cinematic Universe's biggest box office hits. On the small screen, Marvel expanded the McU's TV scope with the Marvel Spotlight series Echo and the X-Men: The Animated Series revival X-Men '97, as well as the WandaVision spinoff Agatha All Along and the third season of its only anthology series, What If...? season 3.
What If...? season 3 introduced another set of alternate timelines inhabited by a wide variety of unique Marvel characters, from a Celestial-powered Agatha Harkness to a Mjolnir-wielding Storm to over a dozen wild What If...? variants who didn't make the cut for an episode of their own. Although the Marvel multiverse technically provides enough material for several more seasons, What If...? season 3 marks the...
