If you get separated from your wedlock partner for more than 100 yards, the wedlock starts beeping first, and you have couple of seconds to get back within 100 yards, as demonstrated multiple times during the movie. So, why didn't somebody just step over the line for a few seconds, and then find out whose wedlock beeped? Then, they could escape any time they wanted.
