Steven Spielberg's Game-Changing Sci-Fi Movie Is Finding New Fans On Max
Image
Steven Spielberg is inarguably one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, but, being human (as far as we know), he is fallible. He's made one thoroughly lousy movie ("Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"), a strangely inert one ("The Bfg"), and must answer for the bizarre backlot debacle that is "Hook."

These misfires are rare for a director like Spielberg, who doesn't have to move forward on a project until he's good and ready. He's known for shooting quickly and confidently, intuitively placing the camera exactly where it needs to be, and delivering a finished film that is narratively concise and thematically rich. The only thing better than watching a Steven Spielberg movie for the first time is knowing that it's going to open up in new and surprising ways on subsequent viewings. There isn't a single filmmaker working today who can top Spielberg as a visual storyteller.

Greg Cannom, the masterful prosthetics and makeup specialist who received Oscars for his work on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Vice, has died. He was 73.

Cannom worked often with makeup maestro Rick Baker early in his career, and Baker on Friday reported his death in an Instagram post. “His work will be remembered long after his passing,” he wrote. No details were immediately available.

In March 2023, a GoFundMe page was set up to help Cannom with expenses as he battled diabetes and a staph infection that led to one of his legs being amputated below his knee.

In addition to his four wins, Cannom received six other Oscar makeup noms: for Hook (1991), Hoffa (1992), Roommates (1995), Titanic (1997), Bicentennial Man (1999) and A Beautiful Mind (2001).

Steven Spielberg collaborator Caroline Goodall and “This City Is Ours” star Hannah Onslow have signed on to lead new short film “The Second Time Around.”

Eric Kripke’s Comic Book Series About a Superhero Facing Mid-Life Crisis Screams a Jensen Ackles TV Show
Image
Eric Kripke has already cast Jensen Ackles in one indie superhero comic adaptation. What’s another, that too penned by Kripke himself? Jacked is a comic book from the Supernatural creator that, at its core, looks at a superhero having a midlife crisis. Ackles has already managed to wow fans and audiences as Soldier Boy in The Boys, but Jacked also seems something that is right up his alley.

Indie superhero comics have become a cornerstone in mainstream film and television, thanks to IPs like The Boys, Invincible, and The Umbrella Academy. With renewed interest in capitalizing on these non-Marvel and DC projects, some interesting projects might get the time to shine in the mainstream.

One can see some shades of Jacked in The Boys Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy in The Boys season 3 || Credit: Prime Video

Eric Kripke wanted to tell a story with Jacked that could very easily be echoed in The Boys.

10 Hit Horror Movies That Aren't As Good As You Remember
Image
It's no secret that nostalgia paints everything in rosy colors, making it harder to recognize when something we once loved no longer holds up. This happens frequently in the world of film, where childhood emotions blind us to the flaws of a genuinely crappy picture. We don't want to admit that something that once stirred us to our core has lost its luster -- and honestly, there's no shame in that. We've all been there.

Still, part of growing up is accepting some hard truths. Steven Spielberg's "Hook" isn't all that great. Michael Bay probably never had it. "Pulp Fiction" and "The Shawshank Redemption" are leagues better than "Forrest Gump." And "Back to the Future Part II and III" never should have happened. There -- don't you feel a little better?

No? Well, buckle up. Here's an even tougher exercise: a list of 10 hit horror movies that aren't as good as you remember.

The unlikely connections between Star Trek and Happy Days will surprise you
Image
What's the connection between Star Trek and Happy Days? There are several: Anson Williams, who played Potsie on Happy Days, later directed two episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and four episodes of Voyager. Don Most, who played Ralph Malph on Happy Days, guest-starred in a Voyager two-parter.

Also, though it cannot be 10,000% proven, it's thought that Robin Williams' Mork costume, which he first wore during a guest appearance on Happy Days, and then later on Mork & Mindy, was created using the costume that Phillip Pine wore during his guest spot as Col. Green in Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Savage Curtain." And, as many Star Trek: The Next Generation fans know, Robin Williams -- a major Trek fan -- almost guest-starred on The Next Generation.

Delving into more detail, Anson Williams directed more than 150 episodes of nearly 40 different shows, as well as several made-for-television movies.

15 Terrible Movies By Great Directors
Image
If you're ever having a bad day or feeling like you're not good enough, remember that Steven Spielberg has made some pretty bad movies. That's not to disparage the Beard. He's an iconic director and a huge reason for Hollywood's astronomical success in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. Indeed, he belongs on the Mount Rushmore of great filmmakers -- but he's far from perfect. Yes, even Steven freaking Spielberg is not immune from making a bad call now and again. Somehow, every time he seemingly hits a low point, like immediately after 1990's "Hook," he bounces back with a vengeance, namely the one-two punch of "Jurassic Park" and Best Picture winner "Schindler's List."

He's not the only one. James Cameron, Ron Howard, Peter Jackson, and George Lucas proudly stand atop this list of 15 great movie directors who made terrible films. As you keep reading, remember that we do...

‘What About Bob?’ Nearly Starred Robin Williams and Woody Allen
Image
1991’s What About Bob? tells the story of a clingy multiphobe who won’t leave his therapist alone, even when Dr. Leo Marvin goes on vacation with his family. The shrink becomes so crazed, he eventually attempts to murder his patient with explosives.

And somehow things were even more tense behind the scenes.

Famously, stars Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss didn’t get along while making the film. Not in a “he has a bigger trailer than me” way, but more in a “he just threw a glass ashtray at my face” way. That real-life tension no doubt contributed to the pair’s compelling on-screen dynamic, but things would have been far different had director Frank Oz been working with two other actors, which was very nearly the case.

Rolling Stone recently published an oral history of What About Bob? that included a number of interesting production details, such as...

Wtf Happened to The Last Boy Scout?
Image
Bruce Willis has made a career out of playing men who look like they haven’t slept since the late ‘80s, and The Last Boy Scout is no exception. Released in 1991, this action-packed, expletive-riddled, buddy-cop-adjacent flick directed by Tony Scott and written by Shane Black was basically Die Hard‘s rowdier, more foul-mouthed cousin. And yet, despite its A-list talent and explosive action, it somehow ended up as one of the most overlooked gems of the early ‘90s.

Now, let’s get one thing straight—I loved this movie growing up. So much so that I practically ran my VHS copy into the ground, forcing the poor tape to endure countless rewatches until it finally tapped out. Rip to that beautiful, plastic relic. Hopefully, the DVD holds out a little longer.

So, what the f*** happened? How did this film, with all its star power and razor-sharp dialogue, become more...

InfoWars’ Alex Jones’ Wife Gets Restraining Order As Sandy Hook Families Seek Payment Of $1.5B Judgment
Image
Alex Jones, founder of the conspiracy theory website InfoWars, is divorcing his wife, Erika Wulff, after she filed a restraining order against him.

Jones submitted a petition on Sept. 9, 2024, citing discord or conflict of personalities as his seven-year marriage to Wulff is ending. The same day, he requested a temporary order against his wife, which was granted by a judge on Sept. 20.

The court docket shows Wulff also filed a petition for divorce before asking for an emergency restraining order on March 12. Jones filed a motion to seal the records nine days later. The now-estranged couple wed in January 2017, and they share one child.

Jones was previously married to Kelly Jones, whom he divorced in March 2015, and has three children with her. He previously had custody of their eldest children. However, Kelly won joint custody in April 2017 due to Jones’ behavior, claiming in a 2017 interview with Inside Edition that he...

Who Framed Roger Rabbit Took An Extreme Mental Toll On Bob Hoskins
Image
It's become very easy to take for granted the experience of watching live actors interact with CGI creations (or really anything that isn't physically on the set of a movie or series). Even the most basic TV shows utilize green-screen now to make it look like real people are standing outside instead of in the middle of a film studio's vast warehouse. But it wasn't always like this, and it wasn't that long ago that actors having to act against the unreal was new and strange, both for audiences and the performers themselves. Though special effects had been part of filmmaking for a long time, one of the most seminal and influential films of this nature was the 1988 fantasy comedy "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."

"Who Framed Roger Rabbit" is one of the great modern films, and not just because it set a new standard for what audiences could expect when...

10 Worst Changes Made in Disney Live-Action Remakes
Image
Disney's live-action remakes are inescapable these days, as beloved stories are continuously recycled and modified for new generations. Some of these films made much-needed changes to these stories, most notably ones that involved negative depictions of marginalized communities, but many revisions actually hurt the overall narrative.

There's no sign of these remakes stopping as Disney is moving towards developing films that are relatively recent, such as a live-action Moana. As these mostly uninspired cash grabs are released, fans anxiously anticipate what their favorite Disney classics will become. The endless barrage of remakes may never end, but perhaps this era of Disney would be a little more bearable if the updates made to these stories actually made sense and didn't feel like such a departure from the original animated film.

Why Steven Spielberg Picked Liam Neeson Over Warren Beatty For Schindler's List
Image
There was never a point after the blockbuster triumph of "Jaws" when it could be said Steven Spielberg needed a hit, but in 1992, coming off a string of critical and commercial disappointments in "Empire of the Sun," "Always," and "Hook," his future as a filmmaker did look a bit cloudy. His last two certified box office smashes at this point were "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," and while both were the work of an energized director, he clearly had loftier ambitions. And when the critics failed to realize he'd made a stone-cold masterpiece in "Empire of the Sun," he had cause to wonder if they were going to irrationally hold his unprecedented rush of success against him forever.

We know how this played out. Spielberg eventually reinvented the blockbuster with "Jurassic Park," and finally, in the eyes of critics, proved himself...

Jason Isaacs Reveals Whether Harry Potter's Draco Is a Better Son Than The White Lotus' Saxon

Jason Isaacs has played several iconic characters throughout his career, but few of them are as popular as Harry Potter's Lucius Malfoy. The actor is aware of how beloved the series is and recently drew comparisons with his recent role in HBO's The White Lotus.

His respective characters are different, but there are some similarities between the two, like constant arrogance, a belief that they're better than poor people, and the willingness to do anything for money/power, which led them to issues with the law. Before ‘The White Lotus,’ Jason Isaacs Gave Us the Most Chilling Portrayal of Captain Hook Ever Seen on Screen
Image
Terrified of ticking clocks and of growing old, Captain Hook may be one of the most misunderstood villains in classic literature. Disney's 1953 animated film, Peter Pan, remains a classic. Since then, there have been countless iterations of the story and of Captain Hook, including getting his own movie in the 1991 comedy adventure, Hook, starring Dustin Hoffmanand Robin Williams. There was also the recent 2023 film, Peter Pan & Wendy, with Jude Lawstepping into the shoes of the infamous pirate. But no performance has ever been so effective or sympathetic as Jason Isaacs's portrayal of Captain Hook in 2003's live-action, Peter Pan.

Even in This Ridiculously Scary Kids’ Adventure Classic, Robin Williams Offered So Much More Than Laughs
Image
It’s hard to overstate what a massive cultural sensation Robin Williamswas in the 1990s, as he had transcended all expectations to become one of the industry’s most reliable actors. Despite getting his start on the sitcom Mork & Mindy and playing sold-out comedy shows around the nation, Williams would prove himself as an actor by starring in family-friendly hits, comedy sensations, and Oscar-nominated dramedies. Williams was the type of star who could be relied upon to take risks, even when the results were as disastrous as Flubber or Jack. Williams lent his talents to the groundbreaking fantasy adventure film Jumanji, a film that may have been too terrifying for children had it not been for his unique comedic charm.

The George Lucas Cameo You Missed In Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Image
George Lucas changed cinema forever with "Star Wars." He didn't just alter the medium in terms of franchising, but he also pushed the limits of independent cinema and revolutionized everything from visual effects to digital editing, sound design, and filming. But you already know that, right?

What you may not know, however, is that Lucas frequently made appearances in non-"Star Wars" movies and TV shows throughout his career. For example, the now-retired filmmaker once cameoed in his buddy Steven Spielberg's Peter Pan film "Hook," specifically in a scene where he makes out with Carrie Fisher. (!) Lucas also played a small role in "Beverly Hills Cop III" (sharing the screen with Christina Venuti) and even showed up in an episode of "The O.C." once.

Of course, "Star Wars" fans are aware that Lucas similarly popped up in "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith." In that case,...

Happy Face Isn’t Your Typical True Crime Drama, and the Official Trailer Promises a Killer Hook
Image
Paramount+ has had some recent hits, such as Landman and School Spirits Season 2, and the streaming platform is poised to keep that streak going with Happy Face.

The new crime drama premieres on Thursday, March 20, with a two-episode drop on Paramount+ territories around the globe.

New episodes will air each week through its May 1 season finale.

(Paramount+/Screenshot)

The “season” finale is interesting because the newly released Happy Face trailer reminds me of the many crime dramas that have invaded the small screen in the peak TV era.

More often than not, they’re limited series due to the cases having a clearly defined endpoint that didn’t call for more episodes.

(Paramount+/Screenshot)

It hasn’t stopped some shows from toying with the idea of more episodes, such as HBO’s Mare of Easttown.

Thankfully, Mare of Easttown has remained a miniseries thus far, but it’s unclear how...

Woman with 45+ years of experience who shaped your childhood to retire. Grifters take victory lap for no reason
Image
Editor's note: Kathleen Kennedy has since given a clarification interview with Deadline, where she said she is not retiring at this time. She is 71, and Kennedy has been in discussions of what a succession would look like. However, at the time of writing, she's not leaving Lucasfilm yet. The commentary in this article about people weirdly celebrating still applies.

Kathleen Kennedy is a woman who needs no introduction. She is one of the most prominent and game changing people who has ever worked in Hollywood. From some of her earliest production jobs like in 1979 as an assistant for the film 1941 to helming one of the biggest media franchises of all time in a Galaxy far, far away, she has built a career spanning over 45 years. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, she is looking to retire at the end of the year.

I could not be happier for Kathleen. I...

Image
Fan theories can range from the magnificently layered to the simplistic and dull. As Disney is one of the largest entertainment companies in the world, inspired fans have created hundreds of possible theories stemming from their entire catalog. However, although most of these theories can be bright and cheery, some theories can get really dark and upsetting.

The theories that Disney fans have come up with can surprisingly sound realistic given the evidence. Judging by how many theories fans have created from these classic films, it's hard to ignore the ones that sound the most terrifyingly true.

Did Captain Hook Kill Ariel’s Mom? Peter Pan (1953) and The Little Mermaid (1989)

Fans of Disney's most classic films have pointed out a major possible connection between two of their greatest movies. In the 1953 classic Peter Pan, Neverland is home to many wondrous people and places, such as Mermaid Lagoon. In a scene...

The Hugh Jackman Fantasy Flop That Lost Warner Bros. Over $100 Million
Image
In April 2015, The Hollywood Reporter noted that Warner Bros. was preparing to "flood the market" that summer with a slate of nine films designed to fill the gap left by the absence of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy and the "Harry Potter" films. At the time, Warner's domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman told the outlet, "It will be tough work, but I think it will pay off."

In some ways, WB's approach did pay off. The Dwayne Johnson-led "San Andreas," produced on a budget of $110 million, raked in $474 million worldwide. And while "Mad Max: Fury Road" didn't fare quite as well, making $380 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, it did at least garner critical acclaim and remains one of the best movies in the "Mad Max" saga. But one big-budget Warner project failed spectacularly on both a critical and commercial front.

'I Sent My Audition Tape': Harry Potter's Jason Isaacs Reveals the Unexpected Role He Wants in the Reboot
Image
Since Warner Bros. announced the decision to reboot Harry Potter as a TV series, the most pressing question was about the upcoming cast and whether the original would be involved. So far, no official announcements have been made about the upcoming cast, but the original actors showed their support.

Some of them even joked about taking on different roles in the series, but the consensus is that the original stars want to allow the new generation their moment to shine. With all the ongoing rumors, it's easy to imagine some younger actors could return as the older characters. Jason Isaacs has the opposite idea and shared with Deadline his dream role in the new Harry Potter reboot at the premiere of his new show, The White Lotus Season 3.

2025 Sundance Keynote Looks Ahead: ‘We’ll Not Only Adapt to the Changing Industry but Also Shape Its Future’
Image
One of the great benefits of the Sundance Film Festival is that it provides a forum for independent film producers to gather and not only share war stories, but celebrate one another and offer support for the films being unveiled. On Sunday, January 26, the Sundance Producers Celebration was held for this exact purpose, with the 2025 Sundance Institute | Amazon Studios Producers Awards being presented to producers of films premiering at this year’s festival. “Babygirl” producer David Hinojosa also delivered the keynote address.

Joe Pirro received the Amazon Studios Fiction Producers Award for his work on the remake of “The Wedding Banquet” starring Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone, while Danielle Varga received the Amazon Studios Nonfiction Producers Award for the documentary “Seeds.” Both will receive a $10,000 grant as part of this prize. IndieWire shares Hinojosa’s keynote exclusively below.

The 15 Best '90s Kids' Movies Ranked
Image
Did movies for kids peak in the 1990s? It's entirely possible. We arrived at this question after sifting through piles of our old VHS tapes to produce a list of the best '90s kids' movies, noting the amount of high-quality entertainment we had to choose from. Make no mistake, this was a hard list to assemble and required more than a few heartbreaking sacrifices. Even cherished Walt Disney productions like "Mulan" and "Tarzan" were left on the outside looking in, which speaks volumes about the last great decade. "Beethoven?" Nope. "Rookie of the Year?" Nadda. "Angels in the Outfield?" Non. The Lindsey Lohan "Parent Trap?" Nein.

Thankfully, the films that made the final cut are genuinely excellent. So, don't get too mad if your favorite children's flicks are nowhere to be found. Chances are, we love them too but had to make room for those that were marginally better.

Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare First Look Reveals Monstrous Captain Hook And Trans, Drug-Addled Tinkerbell

Following Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and its recent - and much more positively-received - sequel, the third instalment in the Twisted Childhood Universe, aka the "Poohniverse," is set to hit theaters on January 13 for a three-day run before heading to streaming at a later date, and we now have some new stills from Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare courtesy of EW.

5 Fantasy Movies With Bad Reputations That Are Actually Really Good
Image
Everyone has had the experience of walking out of a theater after seeing a fantasy movie and being absolutely flabbergasted by what they just spent the past two hours watching. More than any other genre, it sometimes feels like fantasy films – especially older ones – can be a dumping ground for every terrible script or hackneyed director in Hollywood. Sometimes fantasy films can be so bad they're good, and sometimes they're just bad, and then there's a third category: films that don't deserve their bad reputation.

Even good fantasy films bomb at the box office sometimes, or suffer from production bloat. Yet for all their struggles, many of those underperforming fantasy films become cult classics given enough time and enough people willing to cast aside their preconceptions of them. These five films all have something redeeming about them, from moments of acting brilliance to gorgeous production quality – it just takes a willingness to enjoy them,...

Hot Shots! | Why 20th Century Fox nearly had to abandon its 1991 spoof
Nancy Zamit, Greg Tannahill, Jonathan Sayer, Chris Leask, Charlie Russell, Henry Shields, Henry Lewis, Bryony Corrigan, and Dave Hearn in The Goes Wrong Show (2019)
The 1991 spoof Hot Shots! found itself to a small degree mirroring the front pages of the newspapers – and 20th Century Fox was worried.

Save for a few sporadic examples – the first Scary Movie, for instance, and more recently The Goes Wrong Show on the BBC – it feels like the era of the successful screen spoof came to a juddering halt in the 1990s. In 1993, we had the second of two Hot Shots! films, and in 1994 the Naked Gun trilogy came to an end. After those? It was slim pickings.

There were further attempts to breathe fresh life into the spoof – Spy Hard, Jane Austen’s Mafia!, Wrongfully Accused – but nothing that could live up to some of the movies we got in the 80s and early 90s.

In 1991 in particular, the spoof was a box office draw. This was the year when many big budget Hollywood productions came in well below box office expectations.

The Correct Order To Watch Every Christopher Nolan Movie
Image
26 years into his career, Christopher Nolan is charging along on one of the most remarkable creative and commercial runs the film industry has ever seen. Since he burst onto the scene with his breakthrough second feature "Memento" in 2001, all he's done is make one critically acclaimed box office hit after another. Considering the sizable budgets he's become accustomed to working with, it's a winning streak that any of our big-swing maestros can't match. Even Steven Spielberg experienced critical and/or commercial turbulence at this point in his career, with films like "1941," "Empire of the Sun," "Always," and "Hook." But aside from "Tenet" (which would've been a blockbuster had the Covid pandemic not kept the vast majority of moviegoers out of theaters over the summer of 2020), all of Nolan's films have doubled their production budgets at the global box office, and are currently rated fresh at Rotten Tomatoes.

How best...

Rotten Tomatoes Users Think This Is The Worst Christopher Nolan Movie
Image
Since breaking through with his second feature "Memento" in 2001, Christopher Nolan has been one of the most critically celebrated and commercially popular filmmakers on the planet. He's been nominated for eight Academy Awards (winning Best Picture and Best Director in 2024 with "Oppenheimer") and currently ranks seventh on the list of highest-grossing directors of all time (not adjusted for inflation). Career-wise, you can't do it much better than Nolan: he kicked off with two indies, dipped his toe in the studio waters before tackling a major franchise with "Batman Begins," didn't overstay his welcome with said franchise, and is now a brand name himself à la Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas. With his track record, he can make just about any film he wants at the studio of his choosing.

Now that he's about to embark on feature number 13, you'd think we could look back over his 26-year career...

Why Antoine Fuqua Didn't Enjoy Working With Bruce Willis On Tears Of The Sun
Image
It would seem to be of vital importance that directors and actors at the very least respect each other while they're making a movie, but Hollywood history is riddled with instances where this simply didn't occur. One of the most famous disagreements nearly turned fatal when Werner Herzog threatened to shoot (with a gun) notoriously erratic star Klaus Kinski while filming "Aguirre, the Wrath of God." No guns were brandished on the set of "Hook," but Steven Spielberg famously did not enjoy his time collaborating with Julia Roberts (they haven't worked together since). And then there's David O. Russell, who's fought with and/or terrorized stars like Amy Adams, Lily Tomlin, and George Clooney; if there's any justice, O. Russell, a once-formidable talent who hasn't made a watchable movie since 2010's "The Fighter," won't be allowed back behind the camera until he learns how to behave like a decent human being.

George Lucas and Carrie Fisher Had a Long-Secret Cameo in Steven Spielberg’s 'Hook'
Image
Steven Spielberg is without a doubt one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and almost certainly defined what audiences have come to expect from massive works of spectacle. Jaws may have been the first film to coin the phrase “summer blockbuster,” but Spielberg continued to work on ambitious epics in the subsequent decades with his work on Jurassic Park and the Indiana Jones franchise. While it’s not always considered to be among his best, Spielberg’s reinvention of the Peter Pan mythology in Hook was a massive commercial success in 1991. Among its many qualities, Hook features cameo appearances by George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.
