Legend has unveiled its packed May 2025 premiere schedule, delivering an ambitious run of science fiction, fantasy, and action classics that stretch across time, space, and genres.

At the top of the pile is James Cameron’s rarely broadcast deep-sea thriller The Abyss, which makes a rare UK television appearance on Sunday 25 May at 9pm. This underwater epic about alien intelligence, nuclear paranoia, and human resilience remains one of Cameron’s most visually arresting and emotionally charged films.

But for those who prefer their sci-fi terrain a little more subterranean than subaquatic, Legend has curated a trio of matinee premieres that mine classic adventure with gusto. Kicking off with Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) on 5 May, followed by Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961) and disaster milestone The Poseidon Adventure (1972), the channel dives deep into cult cinematic archaeology.

“Happy’s Place” has brought on Justina Machado and Christopher Rich as guest stars, Variety has learned exclusively.

The role will mark a reunion between Rich and “Happy’s Place” star Reba McEntire, as the two previously starred in McEntire’s hit self-titled sitcom “Reba” across its six-season run.

Rich will play Maverick, described as “a local tattoo artist that is very good at his job … as long as he’s using his right hand. Turns out Maverick has had a stroke and likes to tease new clients about which hand he’s going to use when he starts doing their tattoos.”

Machado will appear as Maritza, the mother of Isabella (Belissa Escobedo). Maritza is said to be “a self-made woman who put herself through law school as a single mom. She started a wildly successful law practice and does not suffer fools.”

Prime Video is the place to be in August with an incredible month of new releases. The month kicks off with the premiere of the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader on Aug. 1. The series was produced by J.J. Abrams and The Batman‘s Matt Reeves. We also return to Middle Earth this month with the premiere of The Rings of Power season 2 on Aug. 29.

As far as movies go, the Amazon original Jackpot! arrives on Aug. 15 starring Awkwafina and John Cena. This comedy is set in a world where Lottery winners have to survive until sundown in order to claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot – anyone who kills them before that gets to claim their prize.

The Hobbit trilogy also joins the Prime Video library this month, as do 21 and 22 Jump Street, Superman I-iv, Superman Returns, Night Swim, Drive Away Dolls, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

With its list of May 2024 releases, Amazon Prime Video is giving us the kindest gift of all: cougar Anne Hathaway.

May 2 sees the premiere of The Idea of You, a romantic-comedy that features Hathaway as a 40-year-old mom finding romance with a 24-year-old boy band singer (Nicholas Galitzine). Having saved the medium of film forever, Prime Video is celebrating with some big time library titles this month as well. American Fiction and BlacKkKlansman arrive on May 14 and will be followed by Creed and Pearl: An X-traordinary Origin Story on May 16.

For its TV offerings, Prime is leading off with Outer Range season 2 on May 16. This James Brolin sci-fi Western will continue the mysteries of the strange happenings on Thanos’ ranch. Reality TV fans will be able to enjoy the Daniel Tosh-hosted competition series The Goat on May 9.

Paramount+’s January 2024 lineup includes the series premiere of Sexy Beast, a prequel to the critically acclaimed, award-winning drama released in 2000 and starring Sir Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone. The streaming service’s also kicking off the new year with the debut of The Woman in the Wall, a six-episode series starring Ruth Wilson (His Dark Materials) and Daryl McCormack (Bad Sisters).

June Carter Cash is the focus of June, a feature-length documentary directed by Emmy Award-winner Kristen Vaurio (Going Clear: Scientology & The Prison of Belief) arriving on January 16. January 2024 also sees the return of SkyMed, a medical drama set in the world of medics and pilots who fly air ambulances in Canada, for its second season.

Fire Birds was created as a clear attempt to cash in on Top Gun's success. Despite some stars attached, Fire Birds went with lesser-known talents for screenplay and directing. The movie was a superficial copy of Top Gun, and didn't put any effort into meaningful character development, and under-delivered on action.

In 1986, Top Gun was released to massive acclaim from audiences, with a compelling story that combined Cold War conflict and romantic drama. With the charisma of Tom Cruise, the direction of Tony Scott, strong Hollywood backing and a brilliant supporting cast, Top Gun was one of its decade's biggest hits. It spurred a slew of later aviation movies, including a forgotten attack helicopter movie starring a young Nicolas Cage: Fire Birds.

Top Gun was by no means the first aviation movie, especially considering the popularity of World War II movies like The Battle of Britain and Tora!

July brings new channels to Pluto TV, including the Godzilla Channel, which features 30 films, such as “Godzilla Vs. King Chidorah” and “Godzilla vs. Biollante,” as well as the 1998-2000 animated adventure “Godzilla: The Series.” The Hollywood Squares Channel is also debuting. Celebrities in nine separate tic-tac-toe boxes provide right — and wrong — answers to contestants longing to hear “circle gets the square!”

July continues the streamer’s Summer Popcorn Movies with the “Mission Impossible” franchise starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Missions Force (Imf). Cruise has played the super-fit spy since 1996, as well as produced the series. The seventh iteration, “Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1,” has a theatrical release date of July 12.

Tom Sizemore, who died Friday at age 61, had hundreds of film and TV credits in a three-decade-plus career, famously in Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down and many others.

A Detroit native, Sizemore on the big screen worked with the likes of Steven Spielberg, Michael Mann, Arthur Penn and multiple times with Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, Kathryn Bigelow, Tony Scott and Lawrence Kasdan. Those credits included Heat, Natural Born Killers, Pearl Harbor, Wyatt Earp, Passenger 57, Bringing Out the Dead, The Relic, Strange Days, Red Planet, Dreamcatcher, Flight of the Intruder, Guilty by Suspicion, Bad Love and many more.

On the small screen, he toplined the short-lived 2002 CBS cop drama Robbery Homicide Division and also recurred on such series as Law & Order: Svu, China Beach, Shooter, The Red Road, Crash, Dr. Vegas, the Hawaii Five-o revival and 2017’s Twin Peaks.

Tom Sizemore, who starred in Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down and in hundreds of other film and TV roles over three-plus decades, died Friday at a hospital in Burbank. He was 61 and had been in a coma since suffering a stroke February 18 that resulted in brain aneurysm.

His manager Charles Lago confirmed the news this evening, saying Sizemore passed away peacefully in his sleep at St Joseph’s Hospital, with his brother Paul and twin boys Jayden and Jagger at his side.

Tom Sizemore, the talented, but troubled, actor who brought a tough guy bravado to films like Heat, Natural Born Killers and Saving Private Ryan, has died at the age of 61, Rolling Stone confirmed.

The actor died Friday after his family made the decision to remove him from life support at a Los Angeles-based hospital.

“It is with great sadness and sorrow I have to announce that actor Thomas Edward Sizemore (‘Tom Sizemore’) aged 61 passed away peacefully in his sleep today at St Joseph’s Hospital Burbank,” his manager Charles Lago...

Actor Brad Johnson, best known for “Melrose Place” and Steven Spielberg’s “Always,” has passed away. He was 62. He is survived by his wife and their eight children.

Johnson died Feb. 18 of complications from Covid-19 in Fort Worth, Texas, his representative, Linda McAlister, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Brad was a true renaissance man. He was not only interested in all life had to offer, but was gifted in it as well,” an obituary for the actor read.

Johnson’s professional career began on the rodeo circuit in 1984, which is where he was first noticed by a movie scout. The Hollywood hopeful would work as a Marlboro Man in commercials and appear in multiple Calvin Klein ads before finding breakout on-screen success.

His first big break came in Spielberg’s 1989 drama “Always,” which also starred Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter.

Mace Neufeld, the producer whose star-driven action films were blockbusters, died overnight in his sleep at his home in Beverly Hills, his family told Deadline. He was 93.

Neufeld’s hit films included The Omen and its sequels, The Equalizer pics and several adaptations of Tom Clancy-penned Jack Ryan thrillers including Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears and The Hunt for Red October. He was Emmy-nominated for East of Eden and exec produced the Prime Video series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan starring John Kasinski.

A family friend told Deadline that Neufeld was working on a third Equalizer pic and another Tom Clancy series for Prime Video at the time of his death.

Neufeld was at his zenith in the ’90s when, with partner Bob Rehme, he formed Neufeld/Rehme and produced a string of hit films such as Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games and Beverly Hills Cop III.

Trailblazing director Betty Thomas will receive the DGA’s prestigious Robert B. Aldrich Award for her “extraordinary service to the guild and its members” at the 73rd Annual DGA Awards.

Veteran Upm Brian E. Frankish and longtime CBS operations’ associate director Joyce Thomas will receive special awards for their service to the guild and the industry. The awards show will be held on April 10, but the DGA isn’t saying yet whether it will be virtual or not.

All three recipients have long histories of service to the guild. Betty Thomas serves as the DGA’s secretary-treasurer – the guild’s second-highest elected officer.

The New Beverly Cinema website is well known for cataloguing film reviews written by Quentin Tarantino (the director owns the Los Angeles movie theater), but the “Pulp Fiction” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” director published a rare gem this month in the form of a 1982 interview between himself and fellow writer-director John Milius. The catch is that Tarantino was 20 years old at the time, and he was still 10 years away from making his directorial debut with “Reservoir Dogs.” It shouldn’t come as a surprise to discover that 20-year-old Tarantino acts far older than his age suggests.

Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that several of its original series will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in August, including the first season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” John Krasinski, who is red-hot following the success of his winter hit “A Quiet Place,” takes on the role of the CIA spy that has been played on the big screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine.

Likewise, there will be plenty of movies making their first appearances on Amazon Prime Video including the action comedy “Gringo,” which stars David Oyelowo as a businessman who unwittingly becomes involved with a Mexican drug cartel.

Your wait for Jack Ryan is almost over.

“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” premieres on Amazon Aug. 31, starring John Krasinski as a CIA analyst who’s thrust into a dangerous field assignment. Another new Prime Original series, “All or Nothing: Manchester City” will premiere next month, though the specific date is yet to be announced. It follows Pep Guardiola, the legendary coach and the team’s 2017/2018 season.

Other titles coming to Amazon in August include 2004’s “A Cinderella Story” and 2008’s “Hurt Locker” on Aug. 1. “Mother!,” starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, will be available on Aug. 26.

Good god, it’s been what seems like a lifetime since I last saw Pure Luck. I’m not even sure it previously made the leap from VHS, where I first saw it back in the early 90s, to DVD here in the UK. Back when the film was first released both Danny Glover and Martin Short could do no wrong. Glover was riding high off the success of the Lethal Weapon franchise, scoring lead roles in Predator 2 and Flight of the Intruder; whilst Short had scored back-to-back hits with Innerspace and Three Fugitives… Well I say do no wrong, but maybe that should have read “could have” done no wrong, given the bad reception afforded this comedy…

Comedy in the early 90s was...

When I left Tampa, it was the crack of dawn. I was in the passenger's seat of the Chevette that Scott Swan owned, and we were on our way to California to be rich and famous. I was 20 years old. I thought I had all the answers. I had a screenplay called "The President Must Die!" with me that I was sure was going to be produced by the following summer with an all-star cast. We had all of them picked. Harrison Ford, Robert DeNiro, Robin Williams. Scott and I had spent the entire spring writing it, and we were done. Absolutely, completely, positively done. It was perfect. It was going to be a huge hit. This was the logical next step. This wasn't our first script, either. We had written a script together called "Moondance" during my first year of college, and a script called "A Weekend Away" during my second year of college.

Premium channel Epix acquired the rights to "Milius," Joey Figueroa and Zak Knutson's film about screenwriter, director and controversial Hollywood personality John Milius, ahead of its screening at the 2013 Telluride Film Festival. Just as these two films are very different from each other, as are movie parodies, ranging in style and format, poking fun at anything and everything. In keeping with this week’s box office theme, We Are Movie Geeks has formulated our own list of the ten best parody movies. The films we’ve selected broadly encompass the widely varying genre of parodies, and while we certainly left out some good ones, it gives an idea of what we think of as being the exemplary examples.

John Milius' Vietnam retrospection, coming at the tail end of movies like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now (which Milius co-wrote with Francis Ford Coppola), attempts to shape a sense of disillusionment over the war from within the military, and show that kneejerk anger one feels over all the pointless deaths. It goes far beyond that point, however, and gets itself lost in the jungles. There's an inconsequential trial sequence, an awkward characterization of a gruff superior, a quickly smoothed over romantic subplot, and then a bloodbath of a third act that appears to exist only to fill a bodycount quota.

The embodiment of the aforementioned anger is Jake (Brad Johnson), a fighter pilot whose beliefs are shattered when his best friend and navigator is killed by an anti-air missile during a routine night mission. He's crushed, but allowed no moment to grief by his commander (Danny Glover...

I had no expectations and little knowledge of the first season of Party Down (Anchor Bay, Not Rated, DVD-$29.97 Srp) going in other than it being produced by Paul Rudd and co-starring The State’s Ken Marino as well as the great Jane Lynch. Well, turns out it’s a wonderfully dry single-camera sitcom about a group of La caterers whose minds are on the non-starter careers as actors and writers.

This week sees the release of several new movies and TV shows, some for the first time ever on Blu-ray. Of the ones coming out this week, we’re excited for a few of them in particular. These esteemed examples of entertainment include The Natural, Dreamscape, the debut of the quirky ABC show The Unusuals, the second season of Simon & Simon, Cocoon and the Blu-ray premiere of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (pictured above with Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellan and John Rhys-Davies). Yes, we realize it’s not the director’s cut of the trilogy but still, having these great films on Blu-ray in any form is cause for excitement.
