Ask Bruce Campbell, and he’ll tell you he’s “sick of over-trained heroes. I’m really bored with that. Guys that are just ripped to shreds and, you know, full of skills. That’s boring to me. Give me the mechanic that picks up a weapon, you know? Now I’m interested. That’s my hero. That could be me.”
Ash Williams of the Evil Dead franchise is that hero. Part of the lasting appeal of the best character Bruce Campbell has ever played is that the audience can see themselves in him, like if they were pressed into fighting an army of Deadites, they could take up the mantle, the chainsaw, the boomstick, and mow down wave after wave of the undead masses.
He is a man that should have been an A-List superstar and in the eyes of his fanbase he is…. which is all that really matters in the end.

Long before the MCU came into play, director Sam Raimi gave us a glimpse into one of Marvel’s most popular and celebrated superheroes with the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Two decades later, he helmed Doctor Strange in the Mutliverse of Madness and joined an elite group of filmmakers who have directed an MCU film.

Do you remember the answer to the question, Who is Darkman? If not, Scream Factory invites you to revisit Sam Raimi’s first foray into superhero films with their brand new 4K Ultra HD release of 1990’s Darkman launching February 20th.
After being unable to obtain the rights to The Shadow, Raimi decided to mix traits from other popular crime fighters and classic Universal Monsters and pour them into the base of his own unique and tragic figure, Darkman. And this unique character is one who could disguise themselves as anyone they wanted to be.
With prospects like Bill Paxton and Gary Oldman interested in the lead, Raimi rolled the dice on virtual unknown Liam Neeson for his first ever starring role. Raimi also took a gamble on another longshot, his roommate Frances McDormand for the female lead after Julia Roberts bowed out due to personal reasons and became the Pretty Woman.

Sam Raimi is ever the loyal friend to his Evil Dead star, Bruce Campbell. Even when Universal Pictures wouldn’t allow him to cast Campbell as the lead in Darkman in favor of Liam Neeson, Raimi would still find a way to work Campbell in at the end. Then, Sam Raimi was given the job of a lifetime, bringing to life the popular Marvel web-slinging character in Spider-Man, and he would give Campbell a cameo as the announcer at the ill-fated wrestling match that sealed Peter Parker’s destiny. Recently, Raimi returned to the superhero genre with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and, low and behold, Campbell appears as a pizza vendor in one of the many universes.

Get ready: Next year marks the fifth anniversary of Child’s Play. “Wait, what? Five years? That movie came out in the ’80s!” Right, but we’re talking about the remake that came and went in the Summer of 2019. Don’t remember that one? Good news, the Halloweenies do, and they’re covering it today as part of their ensuing, year-long crawl through Don Mancini’s still-running franchise over at Universal.
To bide the time until the rest of Chucky Season 3 arrives, you can join the gang as they shed a light on Lars Klevberg’s remake for Orion/United Artists that starred Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry, and the voice of Mark Hamill. Together, they discuss the differences between the original and this one, our fear of technology, the comparisons to this year’s M3GAN, and similar remakes/reboots of familiar IP.

The Halloweenies are back in Haddonfield to kick off a new October tradition! After carving out the franchise for a whole year in 2018, then proceeding to slice through the Hallogreen trilogy in 2021 and 2022, they’re finally turning to the stacks. Specifically, the novelizations. So, each spooky season, they’ll dust off those vintage novelizations to cover them in full.

Bonus: After they discuss the book, Roffman connects with Printed in Blood co-founder and publisher Steven Hoveke, who shares some insights into the forthcoming illustrated reprint due out in 2024. In addition to teasing what to expect,...

Haunted house movies have been a cinema staple for well over a century. Lorimer Johnston, Buster Keaton, D. W. Griffith, and Elliott Nugent all knocked on the creaky doors of the subgenre well before film married even sound. It’s a familiar trope, one that has permeated our culture for a very long time. Naturally, as timeless tropes are wont to do, countless filmmakers and writers have added their own signature, and The Changeling is one such example.
Perhaps the greatest? That’s what the Halloweenies debate in their exhaustive breakdown of Peter Medak‘s 1980 masterpiece. Starring George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, and Melvyn Douglas, the “true story” follows a renown composer, who moves to Seattle from New York City following the deaths of his wife and daughter. The historic society gives him the keys to a dusty mansion, and he soon discovers there’s more than his music floating within its halls.

The early nineties were arguably the heyday of brawny action. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the world’s biggest star, thanks to Total Recall and Terminator 2. Sylvester Stallone was just a little behind him with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but the lower-tier action stars were starting to catch up. Steven Seagal had a string of hits and was briefly about to hit the big time with Under Siege. At the same time, the Muscles from Brussels was finding his way into bigger studio fare and teamed up with arguably the greatest action director of all time for one of his best movies – Hard Target, which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its release.

Sorry Jack, Chucky‘s back. Indeed he was in 1990, exactly two years following the release of Tom Holland’s 1988 blockbuster Child’s Play. By then, Brad Dourif‘s unstoppable Good Guy doll was a household name, feared by children and adored by teenagers across the nation. So, when Child’s Play 2 arrived, let’s just say Chucky came in a brand new bag.

The "Evil Dead" trilogy is definitive proof that director/actor duo Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are a match made in bloody heaven. The original film of the franchise, 1981's "The Evil Dead" was Raimi's directorial feature film debut that was shot on a measly 375,000 budget, but would quickly earn itself cult status through its Nc-17 rating and oppressive, nihilistic atmosphere. The film's premise was simple, following five college students who unleash something demonic and malicious during their stay in their isolated cabin in the woods. Once all hell breaks loose, Ashley "Ash" Williams (Campbell) is the last man standing amongst the wrath of the Deadites.
Years later, Raimi would return with "Evil Dead II," which centers the series once again on our survivor Ash, but also most notably brought the camp factor that the series would become known for. It's the fan-favorite of the entire franchise — delivering an over-the-top,...

Liam Neeson hasn’t kept count, but someone in the Open Road marketing department sure did: Marketing for Neil Jordan’s “Marlowe,” which casts the Oscar nominee as Raymond Chandler’s iconic gumshoe Philip Marlowe, note that the actor has reached the milestone of appearing in 100 films. If that’s not reason enough to speak to the 70-year-old Irish actor about the breadth of his cinematic career, what could possibly be?
(Due diligence: Neeson’s IMDb profile currently lists 139 acting roles, including voice work and TV shows, and as Neeson will remind us, documentaries. We did our own count, including TV movies, feature films, voice work, and cameos, and got to 99. We’ll take it.)
So: Over the course of 100 films (give or take), 45 years in the industry, and numerous awards, Neeson has portrayed real people, iconic characters, transcended genre (“Love Actually” and “Star Wars”) — and at the end of it,...

In the early 1990s, Sam Raimi was a low-budget horror maestro who'd made the leap to studio filmmaking without sacrificing his gonzo visual style. Riding high off the commercial success of 1990's "Darkman," a deliriously fun and funky comic-book riff that still stands as one of the best superhero movies ever made, Raimi could pretty much call his shot. So he did. And that's how Universal Pictures bankrolled the third installment of a horror series that most people had never heard of, let alone seen.
The ending of "Evil Dead 2," which dropped the modern-day hero of the first two, tenuously linked movies, in the Middle Ages was an unexpected howler of a punchline. Under no circumstances did I expect Raimi would actually make a third movie set in medieval times. That would be expensive. And silly. But if you could suddenly afford to make an expensively silly movie, would you not?...

One of the trailers that seemingly went under the radar during this year's Super Bowl commercial slot is the upcoming sci-fi film starring Adam Driver, 65.
Here's everything you need to know:
What Is It about?
Following a devastating crash on a seemingly unfamiliar planet, pilot Mills finds himself stranded on Earth during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 65 million years in the past. With little hope of rescue but one last opportunity, Mills and Koa, the only other survivor, embark on a treacherous journey across an unfamiliar landscape teeming with dangerous prehistoric beasts (dinosaurs!), as they fight to stay alive. This epic tale chronicles their desperate struggle to survive in a time long before humanity, and the incredible obstacles they must overcome to stay alive.

Liam Neeson has appeared in many movies over the years. But the actor — known for hits like Taken — is about to mark a new milestone with his 100th film. The project has long been in the works and sees the star take on an iconic character for the first time. Here’s what he has coming up and when fans can see Neeson’s 100th movie.
Liam Neeson made his feature film debut in 1978
Neeson made his film debut in 1978’s Pilgrim’s Progress, based on John Bunyan’s Christian allegory The Pilgrim’s Progress From This World, to That Which Is to Come. He plays the Evangelist and also appears briefly as the crucified Jesus Christ. But in the ensuing decades, Neeson demonstrated his versatility in just about every genre imaginable.

But that almost didn’t happen as the road to the long-running blockbuster horror franchise is paved in rage and remorse.

Sam Raimi's 1990 film "Darkman" may be classified as a superhero film, but it bears just as much genre resemblance to a 1930s Universal monster movie. The titular Darkman, Dr. Westlake (Liam Neeson), barely survives and explosion and facial acid bath, leaving only a small fraction of his skin left unburned. Fleeing the hospital, sans a lot of his face, Dr. Westlake begins operating out of a dank basement, working to construct a mask of synthetic skin that will allow him to appear as his did prior to the accident. Synthetic skin, you see was his field of expertise. His realistic mask, however, begins to melt and degrade if it's in direct sunlight for too long, hence his need to be a Darkman.
The aforementioned explosion/acid bath was done by goons working for the crime boss Robert G. Durant (an excellent Larry Drake) who was looking for some incriminating documents uncovered by Dr.

It cannot be overstated just what a massive hit Tim Burton's "Batman" was in 1989. It was an advertising bonanza the world hadn't ever seen before. In terms of cultural ubiquity, "Batman" handily outstripped "Star Wars," and nearly matched the franchise in its merchandising. In one of cinema history's sweetest plum deals, Jack Nicholson — who played the Joker — not only received top billing but cut his own salary to a mere 6 million in exchange for a percentage of the film's merch sales. He ultimately earned about 90 million. The film was made for a budget of 48 million. It earned about 411 million worldwide. That's nearly a billion dollars in 2022.
Given the tone and look of the movie, one might see the overwhelming success of "Batman" as a little odd. Designed after German expressionist films of the 1920s and 1930s, "Batman" was arch and artificial. It was shadowy and tragic. Unlike Richard Donner's "Superman" from 20 years previous,...

Horror aficionados were mostly thrilled this year when Sam Raimi directed his first film in nine years with "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness." I say "mostly thrilled" because there was some grumbling that Raimi's wild flights of grisly fancy were reined in by the four-quadrant dictates of Marvel Studios. While it's true that the film is hampered by a for-hire homogeneity here and there, it's also easily the darkest movie in MCU history, and, once it gets warmed up, delivers the spook-a-blast goods in classic Raimi fashion.
"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Magic" was close enough to the real Raimi thing to leave his hardcore fans hankering for a return to the take-no-prisoners horror of the "Evil Dead" films and "Drag Me to Hell." So learning via Mick Garris' interview with Roy Lee on the former's Post Mortem podcast that Raimi is preparing to direct a...

If you think two independent, ultra-gory, unrated horror movies getting a big(ger) budget third sequel made by a major Hollywood studio sounds unlikely, then let me remind you of a little movie called "Army of Darkness?" Strange but true — the follow-up to "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2" (subtitled "Dead By Dawn" if ya nasty) is a lightly-r-rated affair that sees hapless hero Ash (Bruce Campbell) thrust into a fantasized version of the Middle Ages, one that tones down the gushing blood and bodily dismemberment of the prior films before replacing them with rampaging skeletons and exploding catapults ... and it was made by Universal Pictures.
It's a sequel that is equal parts expensive as it is expansive, especially for a franchise that began as the quintessential "cabin in the woods" horror film. In addition to Universal footing the bills for the movie, they were also in charge of distributing and marketing it.

"I have a very particular set of skills"; Liam Neeson's iconic threat in "Taken" spawned many internet memes, two disastrous sequels, and a complete career shift for one of Hollywood's most respected dramatic actors. Prior to "Taken," Neeson had dabbled in the action genre with films like "Darkman" and "Batman Begins," but he was best known for his more serious projects. He certainly wasn't someone that film fans would compare to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, or Keanu Reeves.

Director Sam Raimi ("Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness") wants to do a direct sequel to his 1998 feature "Darkman", originally starring Liam Neeson as scientist 'Peyton Westlake', who survives the aftermath of an attack with superhuman athletic abilities and a realistic mask making process:
"...'Westlake' (Neeson) is left for dead by mobster 'Robert Durant' (Larry Drake), after his girlfriend, attorney 'Julie Hastings' (Frances McDormand), runs afoul of corrupt developer 'Louis Strack Jr' (Colin Friels).
"After a treatment to cure him of his injuries fails...
"...Westlake develops super-human abilities, which also have the unintended side-effect...
"...of rendering him mentally unstable and borderline psychotic..."
