The Museum of the Moving Image will honor Rosie Perez, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz and former AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan at its 2024 Spring Moving Image Awards benefit, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
The Oscar- and Emmy-nominated Perez, whose credits include Do The Right Thing and 1992’s White Men Can’t Jump, recently appeared in the second season of Showtime’s Your Honor and HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Perez has been an activist for a number of causes, with President Obama appointing her in 2010 to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (Pacha).

Jay-Z and Nas took a lot of heavy shots at each during their famous battle. Their feud caught major mainstream attention, with even a few stars sharing their feelings on the matter. One of those stars was Rosie Perez, who sided with Nas in their rap war.
What Rosie Perez had to say about Jay-Z during his battle with Nas Jay-Z | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Jay-Z and Nas’ former rivalry took a turn for the worst as their competition continued. Hip hop fans might remember Jay-Z attacking Nas first on the record “The Takeover,” where he criticized numerous rappers in the industry. Nas would retaliate with “Ether,” which many believed was the better diss record between the two.
But those weren’t the only diss records exchanged by the two veteran emcees. Jay-Z would answer Nas’ “Ether” with the much more personal diss track “Supa Ugly.” On that record, Jay-Z claimed...

Actor Denzel Washington and filmmaker Spike Lee have been known to work together on films like Malcolm X and Inside Man. Their frequent collaborations helped form a close bond between the two. But there’s another well-known actor who Lee feels he’s bonded with on a slightly similar level.

Washington and Lee have one of cinema’s most notable actor-director relationships. The pair first came together in the 1990 film Mo’ Better Blues. Lee immediately pictured Washington in the lead role of the film after seeing how women responded to the Oscar-winner.
“Before I wrote one word of Mo’ Better Blues, I knew I wanted Denzel Washington to play the lead,” Washington once told Entertainment Weekly. “In the fall of ’88, Denzel was starring on Broadway in Checkmates with Ruby Dee and Paul Winfield.

Spike Lee credits Steven Spielberg for having a “crystal ball” when it comes to the dangers of artificial intelligence.
During an interview alongside actor Giancarlo Esposito for The Hollywood Reporter, Lee pointed to Spielberg’s 2001 film “A.I. Artificial Intelligence.” Stanley Kubrick had been developing the sci-fi feature for two decades before Spielberg took over writing and directing after Kubrick’s death.
According to Lee, Spielberg’s film was one of the first mainstream portrayals of artificial intelligence, and served as an early warning for what the world is facing now in 2024.
“The danger that A.I. could do to cinemas is nothing compared to what it could do to the world,” Lee said when asked about the effects of A.I. on filmmaking. “It’s bigger than cinema. It’s bigger than music. I got to give it to my brother, Steven Spielberg, who peeped this many years ago when...

Mookie and Buggin’-Out back together again. We love to see it. Filmmaker, artist, tastemaker, and thespian Spike Lee has reunited with “School Daze” and “Do The Right Thing” brethren Giancarlo Esposito in a recent spot for Fiat’s new all-electric Fiat 500e. The commercial is entitled “Italy in America” and sees Esposito, whose father hails from Naples, introducing Lee to “la dolce vita”. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter marking the reunion, Lee and Esposito reflected on their friendship and collaborations, their shared appreciation for Italian culture, and various film projects on approach.
“This is a natural fit,” Lee said of working with Esposito on the project after years apart. “When you’re close, especially in this industry, there might be Spike the love, but there are schedules and delays that prevent working together again. But we have a bond. It’s been announced that I’m...

It’s a Saturday afternoon in February and Spike Lee and Giancarlo Esposito are sitting side-by-side in a golf cart on a studio lot in Los Angeles. The two, friends for 40 years, have worked together many times over the years on such Lee joints as 1988’s School Daze, 1989’s Do the Right Thing, 1990’s Mo’ Better Blues and 1992’s Malcolm X. They are back together and collaborating once again, this time for Fiat on behalf of the Italian automaker’s brand new, all-electric Fiat 500e.
Lee directs and stars in the “Italy in America” spot opposite his Emmy-nominated friend in what marks their first national advertising campaign together. As the story goes, Esposito helps Lee find his inner Italian as they discover how their urban commute becomes more “dolce” in the 2024 Fiat 500e. “The all-electric Fiat 500e captures the essence of the Italian lifestyle. The 49th Chaplin Award Gala saw dozens of stars take to the red carpet to honor Jeff Bridges. The annual fundraiser benefits the Lincoln Center’s nonprofit sector, which supports student programs, film festivals, and movie series. Bridges received the iconic Chaplin Award as his former co-stars Chris Pine, Cynthia Erivo, Sharon Stone, Chris Pine, and Rosie Perez applauded him. Many supporters couldn’t help but notice the latter actor. Perez turns 60 this year and still looks amazing.

Samuel L. Jackson is an acting legend who has starred in numerous movies of all genres. Among his major movies are School Daze (1988), Do the Right Thing (1989), Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), Oldboy (2013), and Chi-Raq (2015), Tarantino’s films Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), Django Unchained (2012), and The Hateful Eight (2015), but he also has two extremely popular roles in his filmography – that of Nick Fury in the MCU, as well as that of Mace Windu in the Star Wars franchise.
We know that Mace Windu died in The Revenge of the Sith, but the character had already been a fan favorite by that moment and since then, there have been numerous calls for Windu to return to the series, implying that the character did not die during the fated battle against Palpatine. Samuel L. Jackson was recently asked about it and he made his opinion on the matter quite clear.

We typically think of any actor who has appeared in movies and television as having it made, but that’s not the case for most working actors. In fact, before Giancarlo Esposito landed the role of Gus Fring on Breaking Bad, he was so broke that he was considering arranging his own murder for the life insurance money.
While speaking on Sirius Xm’s Jim & Sam show, Giancarlo Esposito revealed that the year before Breaking Bad, he was in dire financial straits and desperately looking for a way out. “My way out in my brain was…’Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?’” Esposito said. “My wife had no idea why I was asking this stuff. I started scheming. If I got somebody to knock me off, death by misadventure, [my kids] would get the insurance. I had four kids. I wanted them to have a life.

Following a gala closing night celebration featuring Steve Buscemi and his film “The Listener,” the 2024 Sarasota Film Festival has announced its awards — with several prominent indies taking the top prizes. This 26th edition of the Florida festival celebrating independent film gave the Narrative Feature Jury Prize to Josh Margolin’s Sundance breakout “Thelma,” starring June Squibb and the late Richard Roundtree. “Sugarcane” won the Documentary Feature Jury Prize.
Speaking for the narrative feature jury, filmmaker Alex Hedison, in awarding the prize to “Thelma,” said the group found the movie to celebrate “what Hollywood cinema so infrequently does: age. The extraordinary performances by June Squib and Richard Roundtree are at the center of ‘Thelma,’ surrounded by an excellent supporting cast who serve as a surrogate for the audience in reminding them of the significance of living their best lives with the kind of action and adventure life affords us if we...

What comes “After Hours” but “Before Sunrise”? Well, one wild day.
The niche yet beloved genre of films that take place over the course of a mere 24 hours is a market all on its own. Sure, people fall in love over the span of a day, and oftentimes even people fall out of love with their ideals over the course of merely a few hours, like in “Do the Right Thing.” Robberies take place (“Dog Day Afternoon”), high school is graduated (“Booksmart”), and even death sentences are doled out (“Cléo from 5 to 7”).
The stunningly cinematic experience of having just the “one day at a time” phrase come to life onscreen feels as though it’s playing out almost in real-time. These adventures could be attainable, whether you want them to be or not. These heartbreaks, these realizations, and yes, even just this living from moment to moment, is truly what...

From “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” to “The Usual Suspects” and “Do the Right Thing,” Giancarlo Esposito has long been involved in some of the biggest, buzziest projects across TV, film and even video games. That’s why it’s surprising to see him finally lead his own prestige TV project now with “Parish.” Not only does Esposito star as the titular character of the AMC crime thriller, but the series also marks the actor’s first time as an executive producer.
“It’s an honor to be a No. 1. It really is,” Esposito told TheWrap of his leading role. “People have put their faith in you, and they’ve trusted you. It becomes less about trying to do something but trying to really live and be as you are … This is what I’ve been wanting for many, many years is just to do great work. A 300-seat theater on Southeast Division Street in Portland with a curious past is giving notable talents such as David Byrne and Ruth E. Carter a new stage on which to tell their stories: the Tomorrow Theater. The venue, which is part of the Portland Art Museum’s film-and-new-media Center for an Untold Tomorrow (Pam Cut), features a cinema and creative hub aimed at challenging conventional forms of storytelling, providing a platform for artists to connect with audiences in fresh ways.
About a year ago, when the project was in its early stages, Amy Dotson, director of Pam Cut and inaugural curator of film and new media at the Portland Art Museum, says she began to sense a trend from multimedia artists within her community — they no longer wanted to be siloed into one role such as filmmaker, podcaster or animator. Do you ever wonder what happens to movie props? Sometimes, filmmakers and actors will take them home as a souvenir. But more often than not, props end up back in a pile, destined to be re-used again. For instance: Egon's P.K.E. Meter from the original "Ghostbusters" pops up again in John Carpenter's "They Live," with no real explanation.
And then there's the curious case of George Costanza's glasses.
George is, of course, the famous character played by Jason Alexander on "Seinfeld," and the part is partially inspired by the show's co-creator, Larry David. Like David, George wears glasses, and when it came time to find his specs for the pilot episode of the show — originally titled "The Seinfeld Chronicles" — costume designer Ruth E. Carter pulled the frames from a surprising source: Spike Lee's "Malcolm X."

The Oscar for Best Picture may be the highest honor that a film could earn, but the Academy members who vote on the matter are anything but infallible--in fact, some of them don’t even watch the nominated movies at all. Audiences are often disappointed by the pick for Best Picture, but subjectivity mandates that there will always be some reasonable dissent--that said, this article will look back at some of the most widely agreed upon upsets that warrant a closer inspection.

Hello again, everybody. JoBlo.com here bidding you a big Wahoo welcome to Wtf Happened to This Movie?! That’s right, the Cleveland Indians are well on their way to clinching the Al East – which means the 1989 sports comedy Major League is well on its way to becoming a classic of the genre.
But how did Major League reach this status? How did it become one of the most quotable comedies of the decade? How did the cast pull off pitching, swinging and winning like a professional baseball team? How did it go on to represent Cleveland even though it wasn’t even shot there? And why did they have to make those sequels? Well, let’s go juuuuuust a bit outside to find out: Wtf Happened to this Movie?!
You might be surprised to know that Major League comes courtesy of the same guy who won an Oscar for writing The Sting.

One of our great character actors, John Turturro, is equally adept at at drama, comedy and tough-guy roles. A New York stage veteran, he made his way to Hollywood following a character actor’s path, but thanks to several influential mentors, his career soared as he appeared in film after film that would prove to become classics.
Although he continues to have a successful career in television — he is an Emmy winner from two nominations and has earned a Golden Globe nod and three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his TV work — I suspect that it will be for his work in film for which he will be most remembered, from small indelible roles in “Do the Right Thing” and “The Big Lebowski” to great leading parts, such as in the Coens’ “Barton Fink” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”
So let’s raise a glass to Turturro by...

Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.
Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

"Mo Better Blues." "Malcolm X." "He Got Game." "Inside Man." It is always an event when Spike Lee and Denzel Washington team up for a movie, and they always, always deliver. "Mo Better Blues" suffered from being Lee's follow-up to his masterpiece "Do the Right Thing," but its critical reputation has improved significantly over time. "Malcolm X" is probably the second most important (and brilliant) film about race next to "Do the Right Thing." "He Got Game" is an electric-yet-harrowing father-son drama set against the wanton corruption of college basketball. And "Inside Man" is just a plain old pip of a heist movie, one that makes you wish Lee would place his stylistic spin on more straight-up genre stories.
According to Variety, Lee is set to tackle one of the most masterfully crafted cop tales ever made, and you best believe he's re-teaming with Washington to bring it off.

Cord Jefferson is revealing the advice his “hero” Spike Lee gave him after screening Oscar-nominated film “American Fiction.”
During Turner Classic Movies’ “Talking Pictures: A Movie Memories Podcast,” hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, Jefferson shared that Lee advised him to make his second film as “quickly as possible” on the heels of Jefferson’s debut feature success.
“I showed [‘American Fiction’ to] Spike Lee’s graduate school class at NYU and talked to some of his students and talked to Spike. And afterward, he came up to me, and he said, ‘Make the next one as quickly as possible. Get out there and make the next one as quickly as possible,'” Jefferson said.
The filmmaker called Lee “one of my heroes,” saying, “I’ve loved his work since I was a boy,” citing “Do the Right Thing” as his “most memorable movie-watching experience.” Lee was honored with a tribute award...

The American Society of Cinematographers has done the right thing.
The group said today that Oscar-winning filmmaker Spike Lee will receive its Board of Governors Award next month.
“Spike Lee is one of the most brilliant filmmakers of our time, and the social impact of his work is immeasurable,” ASC President Shelly Johnson said. “This award celebrates his respect for the partnership between director and cinematographer and how two people unite to tell a visual story in a way that can only be recognized as that of collaboration.”
The Brooklyn-raised Lee began his storied career in the 1980s as a writer-director of such films as She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze and Do the Right Thing, for which he earned a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination. Many more celebrated films would follow, including Malcolm X, Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Crooklyn, Clockers, He Got Game, Summer of Sam, Girl 6,...

It’s difficult to think of a director as young as Barry Jenkins who seems so clearly destined to be remembered as one of the greats. After dropping his moving, romantic debut feature “Medicine for the Melancholy” in 2008, Jenkins further honed his craft and became a household name (at least among any cinephiles worth their salt) with the release of his sophomore feature “Moonlight.” The tender, beautiful film was the subject of rapturous acclaim, and its groundbreaking and dramatic Best Picture win at the Oscars cemented it as an all-time great work of art.
Since then, Jenkins has only gone from strength to strength. His 2018 follow-up “If Beale Street Could Talk” was a similar critical darling. And his epic limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad,” which sadly went under the radar for much of the general public in 2021, was nothing short of stunning. Norman Jewison is dead at the age of 97. For over four decades he sustained a career of films that became major box office hits as well as others that presented current social issues in a Hollywood context (with some combining the two). He died peacefully at his home on Saturday January 20.
“In the Heat of the Night,” which beat “Bonnie and Clyde” and “The Graduate” for the Best Picture Oscar for 1967, is the most obvious example of Jewison’s talent for turning tough subjects into hit movies. It grossed (adjusted to current prices) over $200 million, with it already having become a major success before it won five Oscars. Ironically, the racially-charged story about a Northern Black detective (Sidney Poitier) investigating a murder and confronting a racist Southern police chief wons its Oscars in a ceremony delayed by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

There’s a moment in Titus Kaphar’s “Exhibiting Forgiveness” that speaks volumes about how trauma — racial, historical, personal — can destroy a person, even as the scene barely offers an explicit word about it. Tarrell (André Holland), an artist who paints dreamy neon-rainbow-hued suburban fantasias, has reconnected with La’Ron (John Earl Jelks), the estranged father he hasn’t seen in 15 years. La’Ron, now gray and grizzled and homeless, is a recovering addict who was rarely around and, when he was, treated his son with a ruthless indifference that edged into violence. Tarrell still wants nothing to do with him, but he’s decided to interview La’Ron on camera to figure out what it was that made his father such an abusive lout.
He asks La’Ron about the first time he ever smoked crack. La’Ron tells the story, and on the surface there isn’t much...

Norman Lear, who recently passed away at the age of 101, transformed the network television sitcom in the 1970s by confronting America's cultural contentiousness head-on and daring viewers to laugh at a bigot like Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" or the white-folks-hating George Jefferson on "The Jeffersons." People were more than ready to accept this challenge. "All in the Family" was the top-rated show on television for six of its nine seasons, while "The Jeffersons" ranked in the top 10 for four of its remarkable 11 seasons. Along with "Good Times," "Sanford and Son," "Maude," "One Day at a Time" and "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear basically dominated the decade. It was a creative hot streak that's never been matched and one that Lear could never replicate.
After the 1978 premiere of "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear went ice cold. "The Baxters" and "Palmerstown, USA" only hung around for two seasons, while "Hanging In" and "aka...

We made it to 2024! Or, rather, we've almost made it at the time of writing. It's been a long year wherein a historical dual strike that was prompted (and then unnecessarily prolonged) by studio greed brought the film and TV industry to a grinding halt for months. But all that's behind us now, and it's time for a fresh start. Even Netflix is turning over a new leaf by making viewership data available for just about every title on the platform. Well, sort of. It's still Netflix, so, of course, its newfound transparency comes with an asterisk or two.

With or without the controversy, the makeup in Maestro looks pretty incredible, with Bradley Cooper having to undergo upwards of six hours of work every morning before filming could even take place. So when he called “Action!” or had to give directions, he may as well have stayed in character. And that’s just what he did, channeling his subject, Leonard Bernstein, in every note he gave his cast.
Cooper recently sat down with fellow director Spike Lee for a Variety interview – with the Do the Right Thing director admitting he has already seen Maestro three times – and expounded on his approach. “I was playing Lenny throughout his life. I would spend three to six hours in the makeup trailer every day before the crew arrived. In early 1991, 20-year-old Tupac Shakur was torn between ambitions of acting and rapping, and struggling to catch a break on both fronts. He had studied theater at the Baltimore School for the Arts and toured with the west coast hip-hop collective Digital Underground, but acting opportunities were scarce and he had yet to finish the demo tape that would launch him to stardom. His luck would turn when Digital Underground’s road manager, Sleuth, received a call from Cara Lewis, the group’s booking agent at William Morris. A film director named Ernest Dickerson was looking for actors for a movie called Juice and they invited Money-b, a fellow member of the collective, to audition. Dickerson had earned acclaim for his work as Spike Lee’s director of photography on a run of films, including She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, and Jungle Fever.

Actor Rosie Perez once teamed up with Alien filmmaker Ridley Scott in the 2013 ensemble piece The Counselor. Perez played a roughed up prisoner in the feature, which meant she had to begrudgingly downplay her good looks to fit the role.
Ridley Scott made Rosie Perez take off her make-up for ‘The Counselor’
The Counselor was a 2013 Scott picture starring Michael Fassbender as a successful lawyer who ends up involved in the world of underground crime. Perez played one of the many shady characters that Fassbender had to deal with. In an interview with HuffPost, Perez revealed that she pursued the role with urgency after getting a hold of the film’s script.
“My management office called me and said, ‘There’s a script and everyone is saying that you’re not right for it, but I think you’re going to like it.’ So, I read the script and I loved it.

A new exhibit highlights the icons who have shaped the New York film-maker’s unique style
Spike Lee is telling me the story of how he had to convince Frank Sinatra to let him use his music for Lee’s 1991 film Jungle Fever. Apparently, Ol’ Blue Eyes was upset about one of the film-maker’s earlier movies, Do the Right Thing. In an unforgettable scene, a ruckus breaks out in Sal’s Pizzeria, the neighborhood restaurant where the film’s protagonists hang. At one point during the chaos, a devastating fire starts, and the walls, adorned with photos of beloved celebrities – such as Frank Sinatra – burn.
Lee was trying to negotiate the rights with Sinatra’s daughter, Tina, who at the time handled the music legend’s business affairs. “You disrespected my father,” Tina told Lee, by his own account. Lee apologized and, for weeks, begged for a way to make amends.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” turned the tortured life of J. Robert Oppenheimer into a bona fide summer blockbuster by treating the physicist’s inner musings as a canvas for an epic. But despite devoting three hours of runtime to the man who invented the atomic bomb, the film never actually shows the devastating weapon being used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The artistic choice polarized many cinephiles — including Spike Lee.
In a new interview with the Washington Post, Lee heaped praise on Nolan but said that he would have liked to see the film place more emphasis on the Japanese people.
“And Chris Nolan with ‘Oppenheimer,’ you know, he’s a massive filmmaker. Great film. I showed [‘Dunkirk’] in my class. And this is not a criticism. It’s a comment. How long was [‘Oppenheimer’]? If it’s three hours, I would like to add some more minutes about what happened to the Japanese people,...

Oscar winner Spike Lee has shared some thoughts about two of the highest-profile movies of 2023, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon.
The Do the Right Thing filmmaker listed the two titles when he was asked during a Washington Post interview what recent movies are inspiring him.
“That’s my guy,” Lee said of Scorsese, calling his latest, Killers of the Flower Moon, “a great film.” An Academy member, Lee singled out the performance of the movie’s breakout star, Lily Gladstone, who could become the first Native American actress to win a Lead Actress Oscar.
“Lily Gladstone, she’s winning an Oscar,” Lee said. “She’s got my vote.”
Lee also called Oppenheimer a “great film” and Nolan “a massive filmmaker,” revealing that he showed Nolan’s World War II epic Dunkirk in the class he teaches at NYU.

Spike Lee has offered his thoughts on Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” calling it a “great film” but adding that he wishes it showed “what happened to the Japanese people.”
“[Nolan] is a massive filmmaker… and this is not a criticism. It’s a comment,” the filmmaker said, speaking with the Washington Post. “If [‘Oppenheimer’] is three hours, I would like to add some more minutes about what happened to the Japanese people. People got vaporized. Many years later, people are radioactive. It’s not like he didn’t have power. He tells studios what to do. I would have loved to have the end of the film maybe show what it did, dropping those two nuclear bombs on Japan.”
Universal Pictures, the studio behind “Oppenheimer,” did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
