Yashica Dutt questions Made in Heaven makers for appropriating her life, demands due credit
Image
ControversyRadhika Apte’s character Pallavi in Made in Heaven’s episode 5, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, is evidently inspired by Yashica Dutt, at least partly. Yashica Dutt, author of Coming out as Dalit, has accused Neeraj Ghaywan of erasing her contribution in the popular show Made in Heaven, Season 2, streaming on Amazon Prime Video. In Episode 5 - ‘The heart skipped a beat’, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, also a Dalit, Radhika Apte plays the role of Pallavi Menke, an accomplished Dalit who gets into an inter-caste wedding and struggles to have a Buddhist wedding ceremony, by unabashedly embracing her Dalit identity. This particular episode is generating a lot of discussion on social media about how Dalits are finally getting a good representation in Television without any dehumanizing atrocities against them. Pallavi’s character is evidently based on Yashica Dutt, at least partly. Like Yashica, Pallavi too writes a book called ‘Denied’, and...

Chloë Grace Moretz and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Star in ‘White Night,’ Based On Jonestown Mass Murder-Suicide
Chloë Grace Moretz
Chloë Grace Moretz and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are set to star together in “White Night,” a psychological thriller inspired by the true story of the mass murder-suicide in the Jonestown cult in 1978.

Anne Sewitsky (“A Very British Scandal”) is directing the film that will star Gordon-Levitt as Jim Jones, the Christian socialist preacher, self-proclaimed God and cult leader, and Moretz as Deborah Layton, a woman who rose through the ranks of the cult and tried to expose Jones before it was too late.

“White Night” is based on Layton’s memoir “Seductive Poison,” and it details how on November 18, 1978, more than 900 people died in a mass murder-suicide, one of the largest on record. The massacre occurred at the Jonestown settlement that Jones established in Guyana in 1974, an extension of his San Francisco-based cult.

William Wheeler wrote the script based on Layton’s memoir.

The film is being financed by FilmNation Entertainment...

Arthur Bressan Jr: The Auteur of Gay Liberation
Arthur Bressan, Jr.Queer cinema in America is not without a sense of loss. In trying to bridge a period of censorship and queer coding (whether in compliance to censors or deliberately transmitting some kind of film language that reads queer without explicitly stating so) to New Queer Cinema and post-New Queer Cinema of today, there is an acceptance and resignation that what pervades a considerable period of queer cinema history is absence, something missing. It is the what could have been: art that was not made because it could not be made, as those who would have were dead. The lost lives and lost potential of HIV/AIDS among artists in the 1980s eidolically looms over queer cinema. But there was still art being made and artists to celebrate. Predating the AIDS epidemic, there was the post-Stonewall art, art of queer liberation that was highly political, a lot of...

Barry Manilow
Barry Manilow Sued Over Judy Garland ‘My Dream Duets’ Clip
Barry Manilow
Barry Manilow can’t be smiling about this.

“Mandy” singer Manilow and his husband/manager Garry Kief have been hit with a lawsuit by a man who says they’ve been infringing on his copyright by using a clip of Judy Garland to promote Manilow’s album “My Dream Duets.”

The suit was filed Tuesday in federal court in California by Darryl Payne, who says he’s the sole U.S. copyright owner for “The Judy Garland Show,” produced in 1963 and 1964 and aired on CBS.

The suit says Manilow and Kief engaged in “blatant, intentional and purposeful infringement” on Payne’s copyright on at least one of the episodes. The suit says that Kief “illegally licensed or otherwise authorized use” of audio-video clips from the show, knowing that he didn’t have rights to the work.

According to the suit, Kief is trustee of the Judy Garland Heirs’ Trust, which is also listed as a defendants, as is Kief’s Stiletto Entertainment.

The suit alleges that Judy Garland’s performance of the song “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart” was used for the purpose of allowing Manilow to record and/or promote his album ‘My Dream Duets.'”

According to the suit, the clip was used to create a promotional video for the album, and has been used by Manilow during concert performances.

“Manilow’s performance of the duets with Judy Garland at Manilow’s concerts was achieved by displaying either projections or digital replications of the audio-video clips from the Infringed Work on a large screen that the audience could view and listen to while Manilow performed live on stage interacting with the exhibition of the Infringed Work,” the suit reads.

TheWrap has reached out to Manilow and Kief for comment on the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages and an injunction preventing Manilow and Kief from infringing on Payne’s copyright.

Pamela Chelin contributed to this report.

Spider-Man 4 Coming Out In IMAX
As if it is a surprise, given that both Spider-Man 2 and 3 were released in IMAX, Sony and the giant screen company have announced that the fourth film, coming out May 4, 2011, will open simultaneously in IMAX (via Coming Soon). Again, duh. Virtually every potential blockbuster gets an IMAX release these days, and the Spider-Man franchise is probably one of IMAX's biggest sellers ever. All I have to say about this news comes as a cautionary tale. When Spider-Man 3 came out I bought tons of candy and went with my friends on opening weekend, only to be stuck in the front row in the IMAX theater. Do not ever sit in the front row of an IMAX theater. You will not be able to read the credits, and then close-ups will seem terrifying, and the action will be incomprehensible. Not that I necessarily recommend seeing Spider-Man 4 anyway-- we'll have...

"I know it's always interesting and surprising and shocking [to people] when they say those things, but that's up to them, it's their lives," Archuleta said, according to a report from Rolling Stone. "I don't think it was a big surprise."

Archuleta was speaking in Washington, D.C., where he attended the Children Uniting Nations gala and performed a fan favorite from his "Idol" days, John Lennon's "Imagine."

Everyone on "American Idol" knew Adam Lambert was gay.

The "Idol" runner-up tells Rolling Stone in the magazine's upcoming cover story that despite his openness behind the scenes, he struggled with coming out to the show's audience.

"Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, 'I'm going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler,' " he told the magazine. "I didn't want the Clay Aiken thing and celebrity-magazine bullsh--. I need to be able to explain myself in context ... I find it very important to be in control of this situation. I feel like everyone has an opinion of me, and I want a chance to say, 'Well, do you want to hear how I really feel about this?...

New York — Three weeks after the "American Idol" finale, and after months of speculation stretching back to his January audition, Adam Lambert officially announced he is gay.

"I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay," Lambert declared in the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone.

We wanted to know what you had to say about the development, so MTV News hit the streets of Times Square to find out if Lambert's announcement surprised you and whether the revelation would have hurt his chances to make it to the "Idol" finals.

The unambiguous consensus among the folks we talked to was that Lambert's disclosure was not surprising in the least. "I think the eyeliner gave it away!" Allison Baldowski said.

American Idol runner up Adam Lambert just gained a few more fans thanks to his recent Rolling Stone's article. Jay-z will not be Axl Rose — as he joked to MTV News earlier this year — regarding the long wait for his Blueprint 3 LP. Sources close to the situation have confirmed information from radio personality Miss Info's Twitter page stating that Jay will release Blueprint 3 on September 11, eight years to the day after the release of the first Blueprint album. Hov's new set reportedly will be coming out via a new partnership with the Warner Music Group.

While the first Blueprint album was released on a truly horrific day, it provided escapism for many at the time and remains arguably the greatest opus in Jay's catalog. The album introduced Kanye West and Just Blaze to the forefront of the production world, with soulful soundscapes to complement Jigga's timeless quotables.

Adam Lambert Openly Gay, Planning 'Coming Out' Magazine Cover
'American Idol' runner-up Adam Lambert is not only openly gay, he is planning a Rolling Stone cover to confirm it after months of speculation, reports the NY Post. 'Idol' judge Kara DioGuardi is on a pretaped 'View' airing Friday, and during her sit-down she says he is out. "I don't think that Adam was ever in [the closet]," she tells the ladies. "I think he was always openly out." Meanwhile, Friday's NY Post reports he will be on the cover of next week's Rolling Stone. "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert has steadfastly refused to talk about his sexuality despite photos of him on his Web site tongue-kissing men and dressed in full drag -- but not for much longer. A well-placed magazine source tells Page Six that Lambert will be coming out officially on the next cover of Rolling Stone. Neither Rolling Stone or Lambert's...

Nailed Unfinished, Never Coming Out At All?
When David O. Russell's Nailed finally wrapped after a torturous shoot last year, I figured their problems were over, and the movie just had to be edited and send out the world. But apparently even that part is proving difficult, according to an interview Jessica Biel gave, for some reason, to The Orlando Sentinel. "It's just heartbreaking that so many people put so much work into this particular project only to have it sit there, unfinished. But it's one of those things where we had no idea it would have happened," she said about Nailed. The Playlist, which picked up on the interview, suggests that the movie needs extensive reshoots, which isn't mentioned in the Biel article but apparently comes from a source of their own. So will Nailed ever see the light of day, especially given that David O. Russell signs on to a new project seemingly every day?...

Chelsea Handler Coming Out With A Third Book, "Chelsea Lately" Renewed Until 2012 On E!
Is it safe to say that comedienne Chelsea Handler has hit the big time? Her first two books, "My Horizontal Life" and "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," are still on the New York Times' best-seller list, she is the executive producer of her late-night talk show "Chelsea Lately," which airs on the E! network and recently established Borderline Amazing Productions, her own production company with her partner, Tom Burnelle.

Yes, it's probably safe to say that Handler has officially made it, especially since her two books are still on the New York Times best-seller list. "Are You There Vodka, It's Me, Chelsea," is at No. 13 on the list, and "My Horizontal Life," published back in 2005, is still on the list at No. 6.

"I never expected to be on the New York Times best-seller list," Handler said in an exclusive interview with Cns. "I had a feeling my second...

Method Man And Redman Are Finally Coming Out With A New Album This May
The last album Redman and Method Man came out with was "Blackout!" in 1999. The two have come out with their own solo albums since then, but this will be their first album since "Blackout!" together.

The two rappers have also toured together and starred in several movies and TV shows together and separately. But it's still taken 10 years for them to collaborate and put out a new album.

"I had obligations. Doc had obligations," Method Man told MTV.com. "There were things going on [with] the label. Staff changes. That's what happened."

"We was out venturing, starting other careers," Redman told MTV.com. "We can't just depend on this rap game. We did a movie, TV show - venturing out. Now we back. We ain't left. We're coming at the right time."...

Rick Moranis Coming Out of Retirement for Ghostbusters 3?
Here at Film Junk we've been lamenting the fact that Rick Moranis, a well-known comedic actor throughout the '80s and '90s, has essentially gone into retirement ever since the last direct-to-video sequel of Honey, I Shrunk The Kids back in 1997. He has continued to do some voice work (including the voice of his character in The Animated Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie) but for the most part seems uninterested in returning to any major roles on the big screen. He even turned down the opportunity to provide a voice [1] for the upcoming Ghostbusters video game. However, there may be a glimmer of hope for Moranis fans with regards to the upcoming sequel Ghostbusters 3. Entertainment Weekly [2] (via Moviehole [3]) talked to Harold Ramis at ShoWest last week, and he re-iterated the fact that the entire original cast said they'd return (as mentors to the new crew, of course). Now here's...

It's All Coming Out In The Washington
It's Presidents Day weekend. And enough celebrating Lincoln who actu ally needed a decent tailor, a decent shave and a smile once in a while. How about we throw a thought to ward Washington? I mean, this man did lots of good long before he got a bridge named after him.

Understand, Washington was unlike our pols today. Unlike Obama he didn't even want to become president. Unlike McCain he thought at 56 he was too old. The actual first presidential burp to Secretary of War Henry Knox was: "I feel like a culprit going to the place of execution."

When he finally nailed the job,...

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' Coming Out Early, Two Concept Cars Video Footage Found
The release date of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" have been moved up. It is claimed in recent reports that Paramount Pictures announced they have pushed forward the release date of the "Transformers" sequel to two days earlier than its original schedule.

Hence, instead of coming up on Friday, June 26, the Michael Bay-directed film will be debuted in IMAX and conventional theaters across the U.S. on Wednesday, June 24. This new schedule will give the sci-fi action movie a head start from Nick Cassavetes' drama starring Cameron Diaz's "My Sister's Keeper".

In addition to the release date shifting news, two video footage teasing some of the cars used in this sequel have been found. One of which came from a Chicago Auto Show report by TV news station, Wxyz, the other one was from a General Motors corporate video. The Wxyz gives out cut-out footage from the...
