In the late eighties/ early nineties, shortly after they did Predator together, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McTiernan and writer Shane Black were all set to team on a big-budget movie adaptation of the DC comic book Sgt. Rock. This is why, at the end of Predator, Black is seen reading a Sgt Rock comic during the cast roll. According to author Nick de Semlyan’s new book, “The Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the project was heavily developed in ’88 and ’89, only to be demolished by an unlikely candidate – Monty Python’s John Cleese.
At the time, Cleese was riding high on the success of A Fish Called Wanda, and McTiernan thought he would be an ideal addition to the movie’s cast. The film was set to adapt an old Danny Kaye comedy called Imitation General. Cleese would play an English cook posing as a general during WW2 and being...

Two of the most famous characters Audrey Hepburn ever played were Eliza Dolittle and Maid Marion. In StudioCanal’s new 4K restoration home entertainment release of The Lavender Hill Mob, Audrey Hepburn shares her first film with Stanley Holloway, who played Eliza’s father in My Fair Lady, and Robert Shaw, who played the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin & Marion. Not that Audrey Hepburn actually shares the screen in The Lavender Hill Mob with either Stanley Holloway or Robert Shaw, but she does get the film off to a bright start with a nuzzle with Alec Guinness The Lavender Hill Mob arrived in the middle of the golden era of the Ealing Comedy cycle, two years after Kind Hearts and Coronets and just four years before The Ladykillers. The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”). Our odds currently show that Nolan (3/1) is most likely to win, followed in order by Lanthimos (4/1), Glazer (9/2), Triet (9/2), and Scorsese (9/2).
Three of these five filmmakers have been nominated at least once before, with Scorsese standing out as the only previous victor in the group. Now on his 10th bid (only two behind category record holder William Wyler), he initially triumphed on his sixth for “The Departed” (2007), which is also the only Best Picture winner in his filmography. He earned his remaining notices for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1989), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020).

While two of Monty Python’s most famous former members, Eric Idle and John Cleese, are embroiled in a very public feud, it wasn’t always this way. In recent weeks, Idle has been vocal about how he feels the Monty Python estate is being handled, with him targeting Terry Gilliam and his daughter, Holly, who manages the rights, directly. John Cleese jumped to their aid, writing on X (perhaps in a tongue-in-cheek way) that (referring to Idle) “we always loathed and despised each other, but it’s only recently that the truth has begun to emerge.”
Now, this might need to be taken with a grain of salt, as Cleese has a notoriously dry wit. Let’s not forget that he eulogized his best friend, Graham Chapman, by saying, “Good riddance to him, the freeloading bastard! I hope he fries.” That was lovingly tongue-in-cheek, although Idle and Cleese always...

Monty Python famously performed a sketch about a joke so funny, it was lethal. Well, it turns out that John Cleese’s latest attempt at a gag has been somewhat lost in translation.
In a social media spat for the ages, Eric Idle spent the weekend roasting his fellow Pythons on X (formerly Twitter). Cleese bit at Idle’s comments on Tuesday, posting a repost.
“We always loathed and despised each other, but it’s only recently that the truth has begun to emerge,” Cleese wrote in a cryptic response to an X user, who asked if he had fallen out with Idle.
The A Fish Called Wanda star has now clarified that he was joking, posting a series of messages on X lashing out at the reporting of his remarks.
Cleese said some publications “got it totally wrong,” arguing that his “loathed and despised” barb was a joke about all his fellow Pythons.

Jamie Lee Curtis Drew Inspiration From This ‘Three’s Company’ Star for Her ‘Freaky Friday’ Character
Actor Jamie Lee Curtis had to rely on a lot of physical comedy for her role in Freaky Friday. So, the star took a cue from this Three’s Company alum to inform her performance.
How this ‘Three’s Company’ star affected Jamie Lee Curtis’ ‘Freaky Friday’ performance John Ritter, Suzanne Somers, Joyce Dewitt | ABC Photo Archives/Getty Images
Curtis had the chance to show off her comedic chops by doing the 2003 feature Freaky Friday. The movie saw Curtis and Lohan playing a mother and daughter who switched bodies. In a resurfaced interview with Phase 9, Curtis asserted that Freaky Friday might’ve been the most successful feature she made at the time. The project fell in Curtis’ lap during a period where she was exploring interests other than acting. But apart from liking the film’s script, everything about Freaky Friday accommodated Curtis’ situation. In the end, Curtis felt she had to do the movie.

British comedian and actor John Cleese has sparked controversy after comparing Donald Trump to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
In a message posted on X, the A Fish Called Wanda, Fawlty Towers and Monty Python actor wrote that there were five ways in which Hitler was preferable to Trump, who is seeking re-election to the White House.
“1. He fought for his country 2. He never used a teleprompter 3. He was nice to dogs 4. He wrote his own books 5. He never played golf 6. He wasn’t a big fat slob,” wrote Cleese.
He continued by listing five ways Trump is preferable to Hitler, writing “1. doesn’t practice genocide 2. He has nicer hair,” and leaving the other three spaces empty.
The message, which has been viewed more than one million times, prompted hundreds of below-the-line responses, with many criticizing comedian Cleese for the comparison, and others writing it was clearly meant in jest.

She gained fame as a “scream queen” over 40 years ago, but in the four decades since has proven her versatility in a range of genres. Award-winning activist, author and daughter of two film icons, Jamie Lee Curtis has built an impressive resume over several mediums. And 2022 was an especially wonderful year for her with an acclaimed performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” that brought her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Curtis was born in Santa Monica on November 22, 1958 to actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh. After finishing school, she briefly pursued an education in law, but decided to follow in her parents’ footsteps instead. In 1977, she was given a small role in an episode of “Quincy M.E.,” followed by several more small parts and a role in the short-lived “Operation Petticoat,” based on the film which had starred her father. John Cleese, the comedy veteran star of Monty Python and Fawlty Towers, has made a surprising admission – that he once killed a man.
Cleese wrote and appeared in the comedy hit film A Fish Called Wanda – also starring Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis – and he revealed in the latest episode of his new talk show that one man was laughing so much during a screening of the film, he had a cardiac arrest and died.
Cleese expanded on the story during a conversation in his Gb News series, The Dinosaur Hour, saying:
“Kevin Kline and I killed a man in Denmark. He was a dentist, he had a huge laugh. A famous laugh. Very popular. It was in Aarhus, not a big town, but everybody knew him.
“And he went to see Wanda and he started laughing about two minutes in and never stopped.

John Cleese is best known as a member of the British comedy troupe Monty Python. Let’s look back at the Oscar-nominated funnyman and his 12 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1939 in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, England, Cleese rose to prominence thanks to the British sketch series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” which ran for four seasons on the BBC from 1969-1974. The troupe — which also included Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin — revolutionized comedy with their surreal, experimental sketches, the best of which were assembled into the film “And Now for Something Completely Different” (1971). This led to other cinematic outings, including “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (1975), “Life of Brian” (1979) and “The Meaning of Life” (1983).

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Peel back the layers of creature feature make-up and look beyond the gaudy, Gaudí-in-a-fishbowl sets, try to dim the swirling burlesque of guts and gore and pleasures of the flesh and you’ll find a rather classic – and classically appealing – Victorian coming-of-age tale at the center of Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.”
That the film remains witty and wise throughout its most lurid stretches makes the Venice Golden Lion contender one of the year’s most unexpected heart-warmers. That the filmmakers lavish commensurate attention on all those bawdy embellishments also guarantees you a bloody good time along the way.

On March 11, 2022, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” premiered at the South By Southwest Film Festival. The film starred Michelle Yeoh as a laundromat business owner who travels through the multiverse, encountering adventures from alternate lives she could have led. The film co-starred Ke Huy Quan as her husband and Stephanie Hsu as her estranged lesbian daughter. It was well-received at the premiere and went on to receive near universal acclaim, raking in over $140 million at the box office. The film’s critical and commercial success began to generate Oscar buzz. It seemed like a surefire bet to get into multiple above-the-line categories, including acting nominations for Yeoh and Quan. Hsu looked like a dark horse contender.

Forty-three-year-old comedienne (and occasional “X-Men” co-star) Rose Byrne is apparently down for the commitment. Every once and a while, two high-profile movie projects square off on the same weekend at the box office. There have even been instances of both movies becoming cemented as classics. Ghostbusters and Gremlins opened on the same weekend. Die Hard and A Fish Called Wanda would duke it out opening on the same day in the summer of 1988. Batman and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids would battle for childhood supremacy on a fateful opening weekend in 1989. This year, movie audiences are being treated to the opening weekend of Oppenheimer and Barbie on July 21.
According to Variety, Oppenheimer star Matt Damon spoke to Vanity Fair about the two tentpole films being given a light rivalry online as people joke about the nature of the competition. Both movies are different enough with their own audience draws and there’s a certain anticipation over which summer film would come out on top.

Two of the hottest tickets in Hollywood, Jennifer Coolidge and Brian Cox (Succession), are about to be joined by Dustin Hoffman and Gabrielle Union for the crime comedy Riff Raff. Dito Montiel directs from a script by John Pollono (Stronger).
The star-studded project revolves around the ordinary life of a former criminal whose world turns upside down when his old family shows up for a long-awaited reckoning. With cameras ready to roll in September, Riff Raff heads to the Cannes market this week for international sales, with Capstone organizing domestic rights with CAA Media Finance and WME Independent. Noah Rothman produces through Canopy Partners, with Marc Goldberg and Sarah Gabriel producing via Signature Films.
“We are thrilled to partner with the producers and Dito on this project; we’ve loved it ever since we’ve read it. It embodies the type of crime comedies we grew up with – witty and entertaining.

Chicago – When the envelope was opened, containing the name of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards earlier this month, it was veteran actor Jamie Lee Curtis who won the honor. She brought down the house with her memorable “we just won an Oscar” speech.
She tearfully finished with “ … and my mother [Janet Leigh] and my father [Tony Curtis], who were both nominated in different categories, I just won an Oscar.”
Photographer Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com has captured both Jamie Lee Curtis and Tony Curtis in his lens, with the Exclusive Portrait of Jamie Lee from 2004 published for the first time. Tony Curtis was photographed during his last trip to Chicago in 2009. He passed away in 2010.

Emmy season beckons. The 95th Academy Awards are officially in the rearview mirror. But that didn’t stop Gold Derby Editor-in-Chief, President and Founder Tom O’Neil, renowned Oscar-ologist and longtime Gd contributor Tariq Khan and News and Features Editor Ray Richmond from getting together to do a final post-mortem on last Sunday’s Oscars and put them into something resembling perspective, as everything always makes more sense with nearly a week’s hindsight. Plus, we weren’t quite ready to let the Oscars go just yet. Watch the video of their slugfest above.
“We need closure!” Richmond demanded early on in the Oscar season-ending slugfest, “and it honestly takes several days to digest it all and offer some sober reflection.”

Jamie Lee Curtis has won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as an IRS auditor in Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s genre-defying “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” For her performance in the year’s most nominated film, Curtis beat out her co-star Stephanie Hsu, as well as Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), and Hong Chau (“The Whale”) in what was a competitive Oscar field full of veteran favorites and exciting newcomers.
This is the first Oscar win and nomination for Curtis, whose long and prolific career began as the quintessential final girl. Until last year, she was best known for originating the role of Laurie Strode in the “Halloween” franchise, though she was also highly successful outside of horror in films like “Knives Out” (2019), “True Lies” (1994), “A Fish Called Wanda” (1988), and “Trading Places” (1983).

Growing up as the child of movie stars Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, Jamie Lee Curtis learned early on the difference between real life and a photo op. When she launched her career as the 19-year-old breakout of John Carpenter’s 1978 “Halloween,” who made audiences care whether she got mauled by Michael Myers — and decades later, the new Jason Blum “Halloween” that put her back in the spotlight as a scream queen — Curtis didn’t get hung up on being taken seriously.
“I remember the first day on ‘Halloween 2018′ that I was working with the young actress Andi Matichak,” Curtis said on a Zoom call. “It was a very intense scene for her and she came in fully loaded. It was over the grief of her father, and it was deeply emotional work. People in horror movies deliver that level of intensity and emotion on the daily and they are...

(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)
We're only six articles into this series, and I've already violated my critic's creed by furthering one of the most egregious filmmaking fallacies in existence. While I stand wholeheartedly behind my selections of Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, Robert De Niro, and Viola Davis, these artists are venerated for capital-a acting. They play serious, complicated people beset by demons both personal and societal. Critics expect them to dazzle us, to shed inspiring or unsettling light on the human condition. For too many years, they did not expect them to make us laugh.
When Streep, after a decade-plus of electrifying dramatic performances, appeared in the 1989 dark comedy "She-Devil" opposite TV superstar Roseanne Barr, many critics felt she was slumming. Ditto De Niro in Martin Brest's 1988 buddy-comedy "Midnight Run.

Jordan will become available at the beginning of March along with all of the “Rocky” films as well as “Cinderella Man” for the broader boxing buff community. A theatrical release from 2022, “The Silent Twins,” starring Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence arrives March 7.
Friday March 3 will see “Daisy Jones & The Six” rock the world when the band’s epic limited series comes out. With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

Princess Diana met many Hollywood celebrities when she was alive. One star who the royal didn’t meet even though they were supposed to was Jamie Lee Curtis.
The princess and her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, visited Curtis on the set of one of her movies but bad timing spoiled the plan for them to meet. The Freaky Friday star later apologized to Diana for missing the opportunity even though she had a good reason.

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

Jamie Lee Curtis has had a long and varied career in Hollywood, from teen comedies to classic horror movies to indie films. One of her most memorable roles was in the comedy A Fish Called Wanda. However, Curtis recently revealed that filming the movie had her in tears every day.
‘A Fish Called Wanda’ was a hugely successful comedy
A Fish Called Wanda premiered in 1988 and starred Curtis, John Cleese (who co-wrote the movie with director Charles Crichton), Kevin Kline, and Michael Palin. The movie follows a bumbling group of thieves who successfully pull off a jewel heist but can’t seem to get their hands on the loot. The movie is full of double-crosses, fake romances, and a key to the treasure that keeps getting passed from person to person, all of which adds to the hilarity.

It was 28 years ago that Jamie Lee Curtis attended the inaugural Screen Actors Guild Awards, as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Helen Tasker in the action comedy “True Lies.” She would watch as Dianne Wiest accepted the prize for her portrayal of another Helen (Sinclair) in the gangster gag show “Bullets Over Broadway.”
Now, almost three decades later, Curtis has once again been singled out by the SAG Awards. She contends for the ensemble award as part of the cast of A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” And she has another shot at the supporting actress title for her turn as the unpitying IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre. “Everything Everywhere” holds an overwhelming lead in the Gold Derby odds for SAG’s top honor, making it almost inevitable that Curtis will become an official champion come February 26.
But can she make it two for two?...

“I’m the only Oscar nominee who sells yogurt [Activia] that makes you shit,” cracked Jamie Lee Curtis during a career-retrospective conversation with film historian Leonard Maltin on Saturday night at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara. The newly minted best supporting actress Oscar nominee for Everything Everywhere All at Once was in town to collect the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Maltin Modern Master Award, and charmed attendees — including more than a few Academy members — with self-deprecation (“All the ‘nepo baby’ jokes, believe me, I’ve heard them all”), a claim that she “invented” Instagram and general candor about her 45 years as a screen actress: “I know what I can do, I know what I cannot do, and I’ve managed to have a really rich and robust group of opportunities in show-off business.”

John Cleese is rebooting his classic BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers, it was announced this week.
The British actor and writer, who starred in the original series as hotel owner Basil Fawlty, is collaborating on the new show with Spinal Tap filmmaker Rob Reiner.
He will write and star in the revival, which is currently in development, along with his daughter, Camilla Cleese.
The Fawlty Towers reboot will reportedly explore “how Cleese’s over-the-top, cynical and misanthropic Basil Fawlty navigates the modern world”.
Cleese claimed that an initial meeting about the series had yielded “one of the best creative sessions I can remember”.

One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time is returning to TV more than four decades later. “Fawlty Towers,” the beloved British sitcom starring John Cleese, is getting a revival, with the “Monty Python” star set to return.
The show is being developed at Castle Rock Entertainment, with Matthew George, Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Derrick Rossi executive producing for the studio. Cleese will write and star in the revival with his daughter, Camilla Cleese.
“What I like about Matt is that, unlike many producers, he really ‘gets’ the creative process,” Cleese said in a statement announcing the project. “When we first met, he offered an excellent first idea, and then Matt, my daughter Camilla, and I had one of the best creative sessions I can remember. By dessert we had an overall concept so good that, a few days later, it won the approval of Rob and Michele Reiner.

When it comes to the big bad in "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," it's been all "Kang this" and "The Conqueror that." True Believers are constantly asking how the upcoming Phase Five kickoff will connect to the events of "Loki" and He Who Remains. And then beyond that, there's all the speculation about "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" down the road and whether or not the titular heroes in this movie will even make it that far. However, while all of that is well and good, we're overlooking a huge threat for the size-shifting superheroes: Modok.

So often accused of being populated by the same stars year after year, the 2023 crop of nominees sees 14 of the 24 performance slots filled by first-timers, including the likes of Paul Mescal (Aftersun), Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Dolly De Leon (Triangle of Sadness) and Albrecht Schuch (All Quiet on the Western Front).
While the figure of 14 is down from 2022, when there were 19 BAFTA film debutants, it’s still a hugely impressive number. And it should be noted that some of the returnees are being recognized after an absence of several decades (most notably Everything Everywhere All at Once duo Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis,...

Jamie Lee Curtis is bringing a whole new meaning to the term "royal flush." In the latest episode of the Apple Fitness+ feature "Time to Walk," the actor and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" star described how a badly timed bathroom break led to her impactful interaction with Princess Diana. Per Entertainment Weekly, it all started back in 1995, when Curtis was shooting what she called the "terrible sequel" to "A Fish Called Wanda" in London.
"We had been told that day that Princess Diana and her children were going to come visit," Curtis said. "We shot all morning, and when we took a tea break, for me, it was a pee break." She continued, "I jumped in a golf cart and drove the two miles back to the dressing room. I'm in my dressing room peeing when there was a pounding on the door, 'Princess Diana is here!'"
"Unfortunately,...

By hosting the 2022 Christmas episode of “Saturday Night Live,” “Elvis” star Austin Butler made a stop on his awards campaign trail that quite a few Oscar winners have made before. Since 1976, 26 actors have gone on to earn academy recognition within five months of hosting the NBC sketch show, and one third of those bids have been successful. Considering examples from the last decade alone, Butler’s chances are much greater, and his hosting stint involved several wise choices that should only benefit him in the coming months.
Butler opened the 48th “SNL” midseason finale by delivering a short but sweet monologue during which he reflected on his career beginnings and dedicated the episode to his late mother. He then displayed his comedic talents in four live and two prerecorded sketches, embodying such characters as a temperamental white elephant participant, a George Bailey-esque Christmas movie protagonist, and one of five strange,...

For an actor to win an Oscar after being long overdue, two things need to be true. First: Do they have years of stellar output without a an Oscar nomination, or repeated nominations with no wins? See: Glenn Close (8 Oscar nominations), Amy Adams (six), and Bradley Cooper (four). Enter the awards zone once and it’s easier to get back in.
Second: Do they have the right role in the right year? Without that quality and timing, justice can’t be served. (See: Renee Zellweger winning on her fourth go-round in “Judy” or Paul Newman winning for “The Color of Money” after seven nods.)
Finally: Short of an Oscar itself, the best thing that can happen for a long-overdue actor is a SAG nomination.
Among the awards contenders this year who cannot claim the overdue advantage are Oscar-winners Cate Blanchett (“Tar”), Olivia Colman (“Empire of Light”), Viola Davis (“The Woman King...
