The Blob (1988)
‘Vampire Zombies…From Space!’ – Black & White Horror Comedy Satirizes 1950s Drive-In Movies
The Blob (1988)
Inspired by films including The Blob, Plan 9 from Outer Space, and Forbidden Planet, the throwback horror-comedy Vampire Zombies…From Space! has been picked up by sales outfit Black Mandala ahead of the Cannes Film Market, Variety reports this morning.

Variety notes in their report, “The black-and-white genre mashup, directed by Mike Stasko, has been a festival favorite, collecting over 20 awards during its impressive festival run, including multiple audience choice awards and best feature honors.”

Vampire Zombies…From Space! is fittingly set in 1957. In the horror-comedy, “From the depths of space, Dracula has devised his most dastardly plan yet.” Here’s the official plot synopsis:

“A motley crew — consisting of a grizzled detective, a skeptical rookie cop, a chain-smoking greaser, and a determined young woman — bands together to stop Dracula‘s cosmic plan to turn the small town of Marlow into his personal army of vampire zombies.”

New Zealand-based sales outfit Black Mandala has acquired rights to the award-winning horror-comedy “Vampire Zombies…From Space!” ahead of the Cannes Film Market.

The black-and-white genre mashup, directed by Mike Stasko, has been a festival favorite, collecting over 20 awards during its impressive festival run, including multiple audience choice awards and best feature honors.

Set in 1957, the film follows a motley crew — consisting of a grizzled detective, a skeptical rookie cop, a chain-smoking greaser, and a determined young woman — as they band together to stop Dracula’s cosmic plan to turn the small town of Marlow into his personal army of vampire zombies.

“From the depths of space, Dracula has devised his most dastardly plan yet,” reads the synopsis. “A full-blown zombie outbreak hits, prompting the arrival of the dramatic (and slightly unhinged) Colonel Talbit and his troops.”

How A Cancelled Jim Carrey Movie Earned One Fan $5,000 From Nintendo
Image
Of all the cultural legacies that the 1990s have left us, one of the most dubious is the trend of offering contests and sweepstakes that either have no prize or were made to never be won. When the story surrounding the McMillions scandal broke in 2018, many a '90s kid was both nostalgic and insulted to discover that the Monopoly peel-and-win game presented by McDonald's restaurants had been a cleverly rigged scam. The story was potent enough to draw some attention from Hollywood, and while a proposed film version from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon has yet to materialize, the scandal was covered in an HBO docuseries, "McMillion$" in 2020.

Never mind board games; some of the most notorious no-prize contests came from the world of video games and cinema. A fair number of these weren't rigged scams like the Monopoly scandal, but rather victims of abandoned projects or bankrupt corporations.

Daredevil: Born Again Directors On Why [Spoiler] Wasn't In The Final Scene, Fisk's Evolution, And Season 2
Image
Moon Knight and Loki directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead helmed the first, eighth, and ninth episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, all three of which were written and produced post-creative overhaul.

In the closing moments of the season 1 finale, Matt Murdock embraces his Daredevil persona and assembles some key allies in Josie's Bar to take the fight back to Mayor Wilson Fisk. However, none of them are Defenders or superheroes, leaving fans to question why the Man Without Fear wouldn't seek out help from his fellow vigilantes.

Talking to Phase Hero, Benson explained why the decision was made not to bring back Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist for Daredevil: Born Again's final scene. Ultimately, it boiled down to not making things too easy for Matt heading into season 2.

"The dramatic beauty and also just the beauty of the tragedy of the season, and the oddly emotionally satisfying thing about that conclusion,...

‘Moonrise’ Netflix Review: Gorgeous Animation Marred By Unnecessarily Complicated Storytelling
Image
It always hurts me when an animated project turns out to be bad, not on a technical level, but on a storytelling level. If the designs for the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the action sequences, the expressions on the faces of the characters, and everything else that you are seeing visually are awful, it’s really easy to say that I didn’t like looking at it. I can appreciate the ambition and whatnot, but I don’t have to split hairs over why it didn’t work for me. Things are different when I love everything that I am looking at, but I don’t feel any emotions. Then it’s the fault of either the characters’ motivations, the lack of emotional stakes, or just the needless overcomplication of a narrative that isn’t as complex as the writers think it is. Recently, it has happened with Kung Fu Panda 4,...

Distributors, Buy These Scary Good Movies From Overlook Film Festival: ‘Hallow Road,’ ‘LifeHack,’ ‘Touch Me’ and More
Image
This year’s Overlook Film Festival was filled with bold movies, many of which broadened the definition of traditional horror. From a tense two-hander and a teen heist movie to a Nsfw alien tale and a philosophical road trip from Hell, these titles played well on the big screen and deserve releases to serve the masses. Distributors, reach into your pocketbooks and pick up these five great movies that haven’t sold yet.

“Hallow Road”

Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys are magnificent in this two-hander set largely in an increasingly claustrophobic car. The pair play a married couple going through a rough patch who receive a call in the middle of the night from their daughter (Megan McDonnell), saying she had a car accident on a deserted back road and may have hit another young woman. The bulk of the action takes place in the cab of the family vehicle,...

Judith Parker Harris, President of the Company That’s Home to ‘The Blob,’ Dies at 74
Image
Judith Parker Harris, the president and CEO of Worldwide Entertainment Corp., the home of the 1958 sci-fi classic The Blob that featured Steve McQueen in his big-screen debut, has died. She was 74.

Parker Harris died March 31 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a long battle with multiple sclerosis, a publicist announced.

The Blob, directed by Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. at Paramount, revolved around an oozing, amoeba-like alien that crashes on Earth in a meteorite, then grows as it sucks up people and menaces a small town in Pennsylvania.

The movie, made for just $110,000 and produced by Parker Harris’ future husband, Jack H. Harris, went on to gross more than $3 million.

The Blob spawned a 1972 sequel — directed by Larry Hagman — and, a year after she wed Harris, a big-budget 1988 reboot that was helmed by Chuck Russell and released by TriStar Pictures. There’s another Blob film in the works, to...

The 10 Best Horror Movies About Aliens
Image
One of the very first narrative films, Georges Méliès's "A Trip to the Moon," is about aliens. Sure, everyone remembers that shot of a rocket ship crashing into the eye of the man in the moon, but as the narrative unfurls, the astronauts meet a group of people who live up there. It's not scary, exactly, but there are chase scenes, and in the end, the astronauts bring one of the Selenites back down to Earth with them. Cinema has been obsessed with aliens ever since.

Of course, aliens aren't just the stuff of science fiction. They can also be found throughout the horror genre. After all, there are a lot of ways to make aliens scary. What does an otherworldly visitor look like? Is it scarier if it's something unfamiliar and hideous, or if it looks uncannily like we do? If and when the aliens visit, will they be desperate for our resources?...

Steve McQueen movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Steve McQueen was the Oscar-nominated performer who helped define the meaning of "cool" in just a handful of movies before his untimely death in 1980 at the age of 50. But how many of those titles remain classics? Let's take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1930, McQueen first came to the attentions of movie audiences with his leading role in the sci-fi B-movie classic "The Blob" (1958). He quickly made a name for himself as an action star thanks to a series of hits through the 1960s and early 1970s, including "The Magnificent Seven" (1960), "The Great Escape" (1963), "Bullitt" (1968), "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968), "The Getaway" (1972), and "The Towering Inferno" (1974). Known as "The Kind of Cool," his onscreen persona as a reluctant antihero made him a favorite of both men who wanted to be him and women who wanted to be with him.

His sole Oscar nomination...

Neuromancer: Apple TV’s William Gibson adaptation adds Dane DeHaan

Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. 'Attack of the Demons' Is Like Lovecraft Meets 'South Park'
Image
Lovecraft and South Park may seem like an unlikely pairing to the uninitiated, but fans know that the ancient entity known as Cthulhu made an appearance in the hit comedy show in Season 14 episodes "Coon 2: Hindsight" and "Mysterion Rises." Even the crab people give off some serious Lovecraftian vibes. Still, South Park's comedic edge keeps it from giving horror fans a proper homage to the late author of cosmic terror.

This gap is perfectly filled by the 2019 hand-crafted animated film, Attack of the Demons. It captures the artistic DIY flair of early South Park but manages to touch on a more macabre and mature horror story that does H.P. Lovecraft justice. The best part? The movie is free to stream.

Hell Comes to a Sleepy Town in 'Attack of the Demons'

Set in 1994, Attack of the Demons follows three friends with different nerdy interests — Kevin, Jeff, and Natalie...

Eric Bana Fills Out His Physical Media Collection with a Visit to the Criterion Closet — Watch Here
Image
Eric Bana loves a good Steve McQueen movie. During his visit to the Criterion Closet, the Australian actor — known for his performances in Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” and Ang Lee’s “Hulk” — started his selections by praising the work of Anthony Hopkins in Jonathan Demme’s “The Silence of the Lambs,” but quickly shifted gears toward one of McQueen’s first films, the 1958 version of “The Blob.”

“I grew up in a time where these movies weren’t readily accessible, so you’d have to wait for them to come on television,” said Bana. “And if it was a Saturday and ‘The Blob’ came on, it was like, ‘Game on, we are sitting through ‘The Blob.” I’ve probably seen this film 10 times over the course of my life.”

He added, “This is one of Steve McQueen’s early films, but…one of the most ridiculous films of all time.

Image
When it comes to slasher films, the iconography of the killer is often more important than the story. As long as fans are being given the chance to watch Michael Myers show up in his white-painted Captain Kirk finest to slaughter anyone who gets in his way, no one cares about trying to make sense of the the nonsensical and convoluted timeline of the "Halloween" franchise. Even people who have never watched a horror movie in their life could probably identify Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th" in his iconic hockey mask, or clock Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" even without his titular weapon. The look of a slasher villain should strike fear into the hearts of the audience ... but it should also be memorable enough to be marketable.

It's a delicate balance, and it's not the easiest thing in the world to pull off. The basic "sackhead...

When Nora Ephron Met Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger: Meet Horror’s New Iconic Killer in ‘Heart Eyes’
Image
What do you get when you mix Nora Ephron with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers? The combination might seem antithetical, but it works scarily well in director Josh Ruben‘s sweet, funny, terrifying rom-com/slasher movie mash-up, “Heart Eyes.”

Working from an inventive script by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy, Ruben somehow deftly satisfies fans of both “Sleepless in Seattle” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” An iconic new horror villain is born in the form of the movie’s Heart Eyes Killer, a slasher who stalks young lovers each Valentine’s Day.

Ruben, as he explained to IndieWire, wanted the movie’s two sides to be equally strong so that the horror would deepen the romance made all the more terrifying because of our investment in the two young lovers (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) fleeing from the Heart Eyes Killer. In studying films of both genres,...

Neuromancer: Apple TV’s William Gibson adaptation adds Mark Strong as Armitage
Image
Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of directors like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. An adaptation of Neuromancer is currently moving forward as a 10-episode series that’s set up at Apple TV+, and we’ve previously heard that BAFTA Award-nominee Callum Turner of Masters of the Air and The Boys in the Boat will be playing the lead character, Henry Dorsett Case, while Briana Middleton of Sharper and The Tender Bar takes on the role of Case’s partner Molly, “a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes.

Horror films set in movie theatres have a long and diverse history, starting with old-school films like The Blob and The Tingler to supernatural films like Demons and Porno and slashers such as The Last Matinee and All About Evil. This Western Icon’s First Starring Role Came in This Classic, Beloved, Free-to-Watch Creature Feature
Image
Few actors epitomized "cool" like Steve McQueen. He was dressed to the nines in The Thomas Crown Affair, had the most badass car chase in Bullitt, and played a brave fighter in The Towering Inferno, just to name a few examples from a legendary acting career. As iconic as he became, and as he still is today, over four decades after his death, all actors have to start somewhere. For Steve McQueen, his first role came in his late 20s with the 1958 monster movie The Blob. McQueen was ashamed of the film later in his life, but he shouldn't have been. The Blob isn't perfect, but it's certainly one of the better monster movies from the 1950s.

Kenshi Yonezu Releases Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- Anime Theme Song Music Video
Image
The official YouTube channel for singer-songwriter Kenshi Yonezu began streaming a music video for his latest digital single song, "Plazma," which is now featured as the theme song for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- . The song was written, composed and arranged by Yonezu himself. The video includes no spoilers of the anime's story. Kenshi Yonezu "Plazma" Music Video Visual creator Sho Yanagisawa , known for his work on various TV commercials, served as the director of the music video as his first collaboration work with Yonezu. "The phrase 'initial impulse' was particularly memorable in the discussions with Yonezu-san about the music video," said Yanagisawa. "From there, a single picture of the moment when a girl encounters 'something' that she will be crazy about for the rest of her life came to mind. If we could express this picture using an underwater set and an ultra-analog illusion technique, it would create a chemistry with the music.

Jim Carrey & Cameron Diaz Have One Condition To Return For The Mask 2
Image
"The Mask" seems like one of those movies that could only have existed in the 1990s. Though Chuck Russell's beloved 1994 comedy is known mostly for being one of the quintessential Jim Carrey classics that launched him to superstardom, it's also got a weird kind of '90s gloom and an oddly incongruous adult sensibility to it.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact "The Mask" was originally envisioned as a horror movie, or because it was directed by the guy that helmed "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" and the 1988 remake of "The Blob," but there was always something a little dark to a film that, on its surface, seemed like a good excuse to have Carrey chew scenery in his typical fashion. When Peter Greene's Dorian Tyrell donned the titular artifact at the end of the movie, for instance, it was genuinely a...

‘Video Nasty’ Recap And Ending Explained: What Happens To Ethel Greaves?
Image
For a generation of youth growing up in the Europe of the 80s, their secret and often illicit diet of exploitation films caused a moral panic that spilled over borders. With some of the now cult titles like The Blob and I Spit on Your Grave decorating the list of forbidden films, the world was both vexed and amused by the power of the medium of video. Loosely labeled as ‘video nasties,’ to its opponents, the proliferation of these films painted a horrifying picture of Europe as it supposedly slid into its decadence. Sadism, violence, and sex lie at the heart of these videos. However, more often than not, they were just promotional bait with all these elements being merely suggestive in the film. The 2025 BBC series, Video Nasty, however, satirically exposes the dangers of society’s empty-mindedness and how that contributes to an even greater state of terror. It...

Does Goosebumps: The Vanishing Connect To Season 1's Story?
Image
Although Goosebumps: The Vanishing doesn’t follow the story of season 1 directly, that doesn’t mean there are no potential links between the two outings. 2023’s Goosebumps TV adaptation changed the approach of the ‘90s TV show that first adapted author Rl Stine’s best-selling children’s horror series. Goosebumps is aimed at an older audience and, where the original ‘90s series adapted one standalone book per episode, the 2023 TV show instead merged the storylines of various Stine novels to make a single season-length storyline. This culminated with Goosebumps season 1’s cliffhanger ending.

'Return of the Living Dead' Franchise Revived With Festive Sequel for 2025 Release
Image
Brains! That's what it takes to make a good zombie movie these days. While the horror genre had a renaissance in the early 2000s, the leg-dragging flesh feasters have waned in popularity recently. Writer/Director Steve Wolsh of Living Dead Media is hoping to turn that around with a holiday twist on the Return of The Living Dead franchise. While details on the production are scant, Wolsh is getting some interesting pieces in order.

Wolsh spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and said that the film won't be a reboot but a sequel to the 1985 original, directed by Dan O’Bannon, and called the installment "a brand new adventure." He also confirmed that this film will use practical effects and real locations instead of greenscreen, which some may argue has robbed the potency and visceral power of the zombie genre in this century. Wolsh reflected on the practical effects teased in the...

What Happened to Eraser?
Image
We all know Arnold Schwarzenegger terminated the 1980s as the premiere action movie star alongside Stallone, but what about the 90s? Beyond Total Recall, T-2: Judgment Day, and True Lies, what’s the best Arnie action flick released between 1990 and 1999? And when we mean best, we don’t mean box office success, we’re talking about old-school ass-kicking Schwarzenegger action hinting at the halcyon days that date back to Commando and Conan the Barbarian. Is it Last Action Hero? End of Days? Or is it Chuck Russell’s underrated 1996 conspiracy espionage thriller Eraser? If you said Junior, Jingle All the Way, or Batman & Robin, you may kindly show yourselves out the door this instant. Better yet, stick around, Eraser is about to wipe your memory and prove why it’s the last great Arnie action flick to blast the masses in the 1990s.

10 Monster Movie Flops That Should’ve Been Hits
Image
Monster movies are a popular subgenre that often features unique, threatening creatures, resulting in exciting and thrilling narratives, but a few monster films over the years have taken longer to earn proper appreciation. Many of these films fall into the horror and science-fiction genre, from the underrated creature film Deep Rising to the now-deemed cult classic Anaconda. The reasons for the poor box office performances of these monster movies include unfortunate release dates, deceptive marketing, and unintentional campy tones audiences couldn't get behind.

Regardless of whether audiences have changed their tune about such monster movies, the response upon the films' release was less than enthusiastic. Though it's understandable why a handful of monster films were unsuccessful, it's a shame considering they contain enjoyable components that should have been more than enough to lead them to success at the box office.

A Classic Jim Carrey Comedy Was Originally Envisioned As A Horror Movie
Image
Chuck Russell's 1994 supernatural comedy "The Mask" was based on an ultra-violent character that first appeared in Dark Horse Comics in 1987. In the comics, a magical mask gives the wearer supernatural powers, as well as an outsized, mutated head with green skin and tombstone-like teeth. The mask also robs the wearer of their inhibitions and morality, making them insane, invincible clowns. At best, the comic book version of the Mask is a violent antihero, and he exists in a genre more akin to horror than to traditional superheroism.

Russell's film sanded down the edges a bit. The PG-13-rated movie featured a meek and weak-willed character named Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) who was transformed into a confident, flirty, brash cartoon character when he donned an enchanted mask. He did commit acts of violence (the masked Stanley is particularly cruel to a pair of mechanics that ripped him off), but Stanley...

The Best Hammer Horror Movies
Image
Hammer Films was founded in 1934, but it took an eleven year hiatus on the way to the ‘50s, the decade when the company entered the era it’s best known for. In 1955, the sci-fi horror film The Quatermass Xperiment became their first major international success, inspiring Hammer to start building toward becoming one of the most popular genre companies of all time. Since this year marks the 90th anniversary of Hammer Films, we decided it was time to put together a list of some of The Best Hammer Horror Movies. Here we go:

Horror Of Dracula (1958)

Sure, this is yet another adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula; a re-telling of the story that any horror watcher will see roughly fifty versions of over the course of their fandom. But director Terence Fisher and screenwriter Jimmy Sangster brought some twists to this one that are not present in others and shuffled some of the characters.

Mark Wahlberg Regrets Working On This Infamous Sci-Fi Thriller
Image
"The Happening" isn't regarded as one of Mark Wahlberg's best movies, and the "Transformers: Age of Extinction" star would be the first to agree with this sentiment. Director M. Night Shyamalan's critically panned 2008 sci-fi thriller has Wahlberg playing a science teacher who finds himself caught up in a nature-induced apocalypse that causes trees, plants, and wind to rage against humanity. At the time, it was a change of pace from the macho roles Wahlberg was accustomed to, but it seems that he regrets lending his talents to the maligned flick.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 2010, Wahlberg recalled how Amy Adams, his co-star in "The Fighter," was once lined up to play Zooey Deschanel's character (who's married to Wahlberg's character) in "The Happening." Unfortunately, she didn't get the gig, but Wahlberg believed it was for the best. "She dodged the bullet," he said before going on to diss the movie.

37-Year-Old Horror Cult Classic Gets New Sequel, Director Teases a 'Sload of Gore'
Image
A horror cult classic from the 1980s has just been given an update. Written and directed by Ryan Krueger, the new Street Trash is now available on Digital and Screambox.

Street Trash is a new sequel to the 1987 film of the same name directed by J. Michael Muro. 37 years after its release, the film is known among horror fans as one of the decade's best "melt movies" alongside titles such as The Stuff and The Blob remake. The newly-released sequel similarly utilizes 80s-style practical effects to reimagine Street Trash in just as much of a revolting way, and as Kruger teased in a new interview with Horror Geek Life, it's resulted in putting a "sh*tload of gore" on display.
