Ekta Kapoor
Kull (Season 1) ‘JioHotstar’ Series Review: Part Agatha Christie, Part Game of Thrones. Only Partly Good.
Ekta Kapoor
Backed by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Films, “Kull: The Legacy of the Raisingghs” has its Rajasthan royals bickering and scheming their way out of a stretched eight-episode series in the fictional city of Bilkaner. Set largely in and around the gorgeously intricate testament of Rajput architecture, the JioHotstar series attempts to be too many things and make too little of a mark. The series’s imaginative idea for the name of a fictional Rajasthani city is to add an ‘L’ to ‘Bikaner.’ Sadly, with its part Agatha Christie and part “Game of Thrones” inspired plot, “Kull” has to take that same ‘L’ when it comes to producing a coherently consistent story. The series shines only in patches, with the lead actors doing the bulk of the praiseworthy work.

Created by Sahir Raza, “Kull” reeks of indecision and oversight. To elaborate, let us look into the initial premise of the story.

Damien Thomas, Actor in ‘Twins of Evil’ at Hammer Films, Dies at 83
Image
Damien Thomas, the British actor perhaps best known for his turn as the vampire Count Karnstein opposite Peter Cushing in the Hammer Films horror classic Twins of Evil, has died. He was 83.

Thomas died April 18 at Salisbury Hospice in Wilshire England, and had been battling progressive supranuclear palsy, daughter Phoebe Court-Thomas told The Hollywood Reporter.

In high-profile miniseries, Thomas played the Portuguese priest Father Alvito alongside Richard Chamberlain in 1980’s Shogun at NBC, and he was the unsettling Richard Mason in a 1983 BBC adaptation of Jane Eyre, starring Zelah Clarke and Timothy Dalton.

Thomas also portrayed a ruthless first mate in Roman Polanski’s Pirates (1986), starring Walter Matthau. When the film bombed at the box office, he blamed himself and said the experience shattered his confidence, he recalled in 2013.

However, when he saw the movie again years later, he “realized it wasn’t me at all. Actually, I’m not so awful in it.

Towards Zero Is Glamorous, Gorgeous and Sneakily Sexy — Here Are 5 Reasons to Check Out BritBox’s New Agatha Christie Series
Image
Growing up, whenever I heard the name Agatha Christie, it was generally because our family’s TV was tuned to PBS. And while what I’m about to say is in no way fair to the famed mystery writer’s rich oeuvre, nor its wide and varied body of television adaptations, it’s true: I pretty much associated the author’s name with stuffy-seeming men with signature mustaches, looking intrigued.

Case in point:

What Agatha Christie Really Thought About Adaptations Of Her Work
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The first film adaptation of an Agatha Christie story was Leslie H. Hiscott's and Julius Hagen's "The Passing of Mr. Quin," released in 1928. This was only eight years after her first work, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles," was published, so she was still quite active when movie versions of her stories began to appear. Starting in 1930, Christie also began penning works for the stage (starting with "Black Coffee"), so she was already a media empire unto herself, years before such a thing had become de rigueur. As of this writing, there have been about 50 official cinema adaptations of Agatha Christie's novels and short stories, close to 40 TV movies, not to mention the long-running TV shows "Agatha Christie's Poirot" (1989 -- 2013) and "Agatha Christie's Miss Marple" (2004 -- 2014), plus a whole host of projects where she is a character herself, including...

The Agatha Christie Adaptation That's Impossible To Watch Today
Image
Hercule Poirot is a creature of routine. Agatha Christie's most famous fictional detective (apart from Miss Marple) is frighteningly methodical in his investigations, and this personal quirk extends to everything he does. This obsession with order or routine serves a purpose, of course. Poirot's detective eye is so trained to recognize patterns that even the most minute inconsistencies stand out. This, combined with his knack for solving perplexing mysteries, shapes the breakthroughs in Poirot's cases, making him second to none. While he comes off as eccentric in most social situations, Poirot's grasp over human motivations and desires ensures he is always one step ahead. These qualities are most distinct in Christie's "The Wasp's Nest," a short story published as a part of the "Hercule Poirot's Early Cases" collection.

These early Poirot cases offer a glimpse into the good detective's life before he earned international renown, and some of these stories are pretty captivating.

Is Brie Larson's Lessons In Chemistry Based On A True Story?
Image
This article contains a discussion of sexual assault.

In the fall of 2023, Bonnie Garmus' hit 2022 novel "Lessons in Chemistry" was adapted for the small screen via Apple TV+. With Oscar winner Brie Larson at the helm — as both the miniseries' star and executive producer — the story focuses on Larson's character Elizabeth Zott, who overcomes institutionalized sexism in the scientific community in a very unexpected way. So is Elizabeth Zott a real person?

No. She is not. "Lessons in Chemistry" comes entirely from Garmus' novel, which is a work of complete fiction. Yes, it's tempting to imagine that Elizabeth, a woman with a spine of steel who meets every hurdle she encounters in her life (and there are a lot of them) with strength and smarts, is real, but she is very much a made-up person. With that said, Garmus did tell the Los Angeles Times that she was inspired...

The Anime That Connects Two Of Agatha Christie's Greatest Detectives
Image
In the eyes of many, anime is nothing but shonen shows — stories about guys with spiky hair and superpowers that fight with the power of friendship. And yet, the medium is also filled with adaptations of literary classics. Even if the U.S. didn't really care about anime until "Dragon Ball," "Sailor Moon," and then "Pokémon" premiered in the '90s, international fans — especially in Latin America — know anime best thanks to "World Masterpiece Theater."

This was a TV show produced and distributed by Fuji TV that would adapt a different classical book or story each year, airing first from 1969 to 1997 and then getting a revival from 2007 to 2009. It was through "World Masterpiece Theater" that Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata got their start in animation, with shows like "Anne of Green Gables," "Heidi, Girl of the Alps," and "Marco, 3000 Leagues in Search for Mother." These were hugely popular shows and...

How To Watch Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot Movies In Order
Kenneth Branagh
British actor and filmmaker Sir Kenneth Branagh has been a Hollywood staple for years, between his adaptations of Shakespeare plays like 1993's "Much Ado About Nothing" and 1996's "Hamlet" and blockbuster projects like "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," as well as the first "Thor" movie in 2021. He also won his first Academy Award in 2021 thanks to the autobiographical film "Belfast," which was based on his own childhood in the Northern Irish city during the Troubles. Branagh is clearly a curiously-minded and ambitious filmmaker and performer who's always looking for a new challenge, which might explain why, in 2017, he started adapting Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot stories for the big screen.

Branagh kicked off this new project with "Murder on the Orient Express" that year and followed It up with two other Poirot stories, "Death on the Nile" and "A Haunting in Venice," which came out in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

The genre of mystery has always hung its narrative prerequisites firmly on carefully placed clues and subtleties that clue in or mislead the audience throughout the film so that the reveal of the mystery or guilty party is a shock or surprise. With many classics of the genre, often this can be telegraphed too obvious too early, but the film's cinematic storytelling still holds audiences on the edge of their seats as they await how it plays out.

The Three Perfect Agatha Christie Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
What are the hallmarks of a best-selling Agatha Christie novel? Crisp, accessible prose and memorable characters culminate into classic murder mysteries that have stood the test of time. There's also a sprinkling of clever sleight of hand, where subtle, essential clues are peppered right up to the big reveal hiding in plain sight. Although her stories make little space for what might be termed as morally grey, this very insistence on treating morality as an easily definable standard grants us comfort in a messy, volatile world. This is also why Christie's brand of escapist fiction makes for good adaptations, with figures like Hercule Poirot or Miss Jane Marple steering these quasi-fantastical detective stories.

Christie's oeuvre has been adapted across mediums, including film, from 1928's mystery drama "The Passing of Mr. Quinn" to the more recent Kenneth Branagh-helmed "A Haunting in Venice." In terms of television adaptations, a chunk...

Midnight Sons Movie Rumored To Have Lost Michael Green; Marvel Studios Searching For New Writer
Image
Marvel Studios' Midnight Sons movie may have suffered a setback with the departure of a reliable hand to pen the script for the planned supernatural team-up.

We got word that Michael Green had been enlisted to write Midnight Sons last summer, but according to scooper Mttsh, his "take didn't click" and he has now parted ways with the project. Marvel is said to be searching for a replacement.

Green wrote the original script for the long-awaited Blade reboot, and has also worked on the likes of Netflix's Blue Eye Samurai, Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot trilogy, Blade Runner 2049 and Logan.

It's important to keep in mind that a Midnight Sons movie has yet to be officially announced - although we'd say Marvel Studios assembling their supernatural characters for a team-up at some point is inevitable.

Multiple characters have been a part of or associated with the team in the comics over the years,...

10 Upcoming Movies That Could Start Major New Franchises
Image
Some movies look like they have sequel potential before they are even released, and 2025 could see the rise of several new huge franchises. Only a few movies are built with the potential of turning into a franchise. These movies usually need big stars, a premise that can sustain sequels and spinoffs, and broad box office appeal. With all three of these elements, a movie can smell like a hit months in advance.

There are plenty of exciting franchises returning in 2025, but the year could also kickstart some new ones. As the release calendar for 2025 continues to fill out, there are slashers, children's animations, murder mysteries and more which all seem like they could be the start of something big. Of course, it's hard to predict exactly which movies will be popular enough to warrant a sequel before they are even released, but there are some clues which can help with guessing.

Universal is looking to Jamie Lee Curtis to pick up where Angela Lansbury left off for the studio’s Murder, She Wrote movie. There’s no deal yet, but Curtis is the studio’s top choice to play Jessica Fletcher in a film based on the 12-season CBS series.

The script is by Dumb Money scribes Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, and Lord Miller and Amy Pascal are producing it. Plans to scope out a Murder, She Wrote film come at a time when whodunit stories are making a killer comeback. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out Mysteries series is a smash hit with audiences. All 3 Kenneth Branagh Hercule Poirot Movies Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Warning: Mild spoilers for all 3 Hercule Poirot movies

Kenneth Branagh has directed and starred in three Hercule Poirot movies, but they’re not all equal to one another. A Haunting in Venice is the most recent murder mystery starring everyone’s favorite Belgian detective. Like the first two movies, A Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, A Haunting in Venice was adapted from an Agatha Christie story. Each film in the franchise includes an all-star ensemble cast, a murder mystery waiting to be solved, and Poirot at the center of it all, but which film reigns supreme?

Each of Branagh’s Hercule Poirot movies has something to like. Whether that’s the cast, the unfolding mystery, the untold secrets lurking behind the lies the characters tell, or Poirot’s memorable mustache (which gets its own backstory), the franchise isn’t short on entertainment. 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express...

Kenneth Branagh's Best Hercule Poirot Movie Now Has A New Streaming Home & It's A Reminder Of One Harsh Reality
Image
Kenneth Branagh's 2017 adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express is streaming on Prime Video along with its sequels, creating a great opportunity for audiences to revisit the series. Branagh directs and stars in each film as Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie's legendary detective. Each film features an exciting setting and a cast of well-known stars to go with its mysterious murder waiting to be solved by the character from Agatha Christie's books.

In particular, Murder on the Orient Express centered around Hercule Poirot's journey from Jerusalem to London and the murder that occurs one night when the train derails. As the first in Branagh's series, the movie introduced (or re-introduced) fans to the legendary detective with all his quirks, capturing the audience's imagination and tempting them to solve the mystery before him. However, the Hercule Poirot series' streaming release serves as a harsh reminder of the truth about the iconic detective's appearances,...

Thus, while the show itself is soon coming to a close, the world will keep expanding. Recorded by Guinness World Records as the best-selling writer of all time, there are dozens of TV and movie adaptations of Agatha Christie books, including Kenneth Branaghs Murder on the Orient Express. Many modern detective, mystery, and whodunit stories can trace their inspiration back to Christie. Only Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may be said to have contributed more to the genre, and he is not as prolific as Christie.

Emmys 2024 Winners: Big Winners Include Shogun, Baby Reindeer, and The Bear
Image
Cast and executive producers of ‘Shogun’ on stage at the 2024 Emmys (Disney/Frank Micelotta)

Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy did a respectable job of hosting the 2024 Primetime Emmys, popping in just enough throughout the two-hour running time to guide the show without overstaying their welcome. Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.

Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie/Limited Series Directing
Image
Seven years after coming up short on their respective first and second Best TV Movie/Limited Series Directing Emmy bids against Jean-Marc Vallée (“Big Little Lies”), Steven Zaillian and Noah Hawley are involved in a rematch as helmers of the non-continuing programs “Ripley” and “Fargo.” Despite the quality of their new work and their strong Emmys resumes, they are widely expected to once again be bested by a complete first-timer: Weronika Tofilska (“Baby Reindeer”).

Tofilska is joined in this directing lineup’s category newcomer majority by Issa López (“True Detective”), Millicent Shelton (“Lessons in Chemistry”), and Gus Van Sant (“Feud”). Counting Zaillian and Hawley, Shelton is the only one in the bunch who has ever earned TV academy recognition for directing a non-limited series, as her very first bid came for “30 Rock” in 2009.

In order to determine whether this is truly Tofilska’s race to lose, let’s take...

7 Great Crime TV Shows Canceled Too Soon
Image
Some of the best crime TV shows were canceled early, leaving fans frustrated with the lack of character and story development. Titles like Prodigal Son, The Enemy Within, Limitless, Jett, and Magic City had potential but fell short due to network issues or audience ratings. Critically acclaimed performances, dynamic relationships, and compelling storylines were cut short, leaving viewers disappointed with the abrupt endings.

Unfortunately, multiple crime TV shows were canceled far too soon. Some of the best TV shows of all time were included in the crime genre and were remembered for engaging viewers in stories about the dark underbelly of the criminal world, the law enforcement officers who strove to bring them to justice, and the loved ones who were dragged into the chaos. The best crime procedural TV shows typically ran for several seasons, but some titles werent lucky enough to achieve the same stretch. Despite being cut short,...

10 Best TV Murder Mysteries
Image
TV has always loved a murder mystery. From news headlines that preceded the true crime boom to the heydays of “Poirot” and “Murder, She Wrote,” audiences have always been drawn in by sinister theories — and the often squeamish truth. There’s a morbid fascination with the minds of criminals but also a basic human desire to answer questions, find logic, and make sense of a senseless world.

To honor the end of Alma Har’el’s “Lady in the Lake,” which airs its seventh and final episode August 23 on Apple TV+, IndieWire’s TV team got to thinking about the best TV murder mysteries in recent years. We didn’t include episodic procedurals (sorry to “Columbo”) or anything before the 21st century. We opted for the “whodunit” over the “howcatchem” — but occasionally allowed a pick where the “who” is known but the “how” drives the series. Single seasons of larger shows...

Brie Larson, Aja Naomi King Tear Up Recounting Days on the Set of ‘Lessons in Chemistry’ Together
Image
Brie Larson has known the character Elizabeth Zott almost as long as Bonnie Garmus, author of Lessons in Chemistry, the novel from which the Emmy-nominated Apple TV+ series was adapted. One of the first to read the book about a chemist-turned-cooking-show-host who grapples with unimaginable loss under the weight of sexism in a 1950s society, Larson immediately knew she wanted to bring Elizabeth’s story to the screen. And she didn’t stop pitching the show until she got a yes.

“It’s so rare to find something that is this vessel to be able to talk about so many different things so effortlessly,” Larson said of her persistence getting Lessons in Chemistry made during a special THR Emmy panel alongside Aja Naomi King, director Millicent Shelton and costume designer Mirren Gordon-Crozier.

“To me, this is a huge story about how when our heart breaks, we still can find a...

Kenneth Branaghs Upcoming Psychological Thriller Sounds Much Better Than Another Hercule Poirot Movie
Image
Kenneth Branagh's upcoming psychological thriller has an exciting cast, including Patricia Arquette, Jodie Comer, and Michael Sheen. Branagh is a great director, and an original project like The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde is much more exciting than adaptations like his Hercule Poirot franchise. Branagh will likely continue to make Hercule Poirot films after The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde, as A Haunting in Venice teased his next case.

Kenneth Branagh's next psychological thriller film already seems much better than a continuation of his murder mystery Hercule Poirot franchise. Kenneth Branagh is best known for his work in front of the camera, as he's starred in some major movies like Henry V and the Hercule Poirot franchise. He's also had a wildly successful career behind the camera, though, as he directed all the Hercule Poirot films and even original movies like Belfast. Now, Branagh is set to continue his...

Daniel Craigs Knives Out 3 Look Is Hilariously Ironic After Rival Mystery Franchises $611M Success
Image
Knives Out 3's new look for Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc pays homage to Kenneth Branagh's Poirot, with a modern twist on a classic detective. Rian Johnson's crime comedy challenges the traditional murder mystery formula, while Branagh's Poirot movies stay true to Christie's novels. Despite competition, both franchises find success by offering unique styles - contemporary Knives Out versus nostalgic Poirot.

The revelation of Daniel Craig's new Knives Out 3 look couldnt be more ironic after a rival murder mystery series recently wrapped up its trilogy with a box office success. Director Rian Johnsons Knives Out brought Agatha Christie's classic murder mystery formula into the twenty-first century in 2019. The playful, subversive crime comedy messes with the whodunit plot formula, with Daniel Craigs campy Benoit Blanc acting as Johnsons homage to Christies iconic detective Hercule Poirot. 2022s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery saw Blanc solve another case,...

Rumor: Marvel Studios' Midnight Sons Movie Enlists Blade And Logan Writer Michael Green
Image
Marvel Studios may have taken a big step forward in the development of its planned Midnight Sons movie, as a new rumor is claiming that the project has enlisted a writer.

According to Nexus Point News - who previously broke some significant scoops as DCULeaks - Michael Green has been hired to pen the script.

Green wrote the original script for the long-awaited Blade reboot, and has also worked on the likes of Netflix's Blue Eye Samurai, Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot trilogy, Blade Runner 2049 and Logan.

While Green would almost certainly be a popular pick, it's important to keep in mind that a Midnight Sons movie has yet to be officially announced - although we'd say Marvel Studios assembling their supernatural characters for a team-up at some point is inevitable.

Multiple characters have been a part of or associated with the team in the comics over the years,...

William Russell, one of the earliest companions in BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, has died aged 99. He passed away on June 3.

The Doctor Who X account posted the news, writing: “We’re sad to report the passing of William Russell, a legend in #DoctorWho history – who played one of the first and original companions to the Doctor, Ian Chesterton.”

Current showrunner Russell T Davies, who is into his second stint at the helm, also posted his condolences to X.

“An absolute legend, for Doctor Who and the whole of television,” he wrote. “In 1963, William created the template for the Doctor’s companion, and that’s still going strong, 61 years later. He’s adored by fandom, and will never be forgotten.”

Kenneth Branagh's New Movie Is The Perfect Follow-Up To His $600 Million Poirot Trilogy
Image
Kenneth Branagh's new project, "A Haunting in Venice," was a box office success and received the best reviews of his Agatha Christie adaptations. Branagh's upcoming psychological thriller, "The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde," stars Jodie Comer and promises to be an exciting collaboration. Despite uncertainty about a fourth Hercule Poirot adaptation, Branagh's love for the series and success with mysteries make a return likely after his new film.

In May 2024, Oscar-winning filmmaker Kenneth Branagh finally announced his next project and it isn't a Hercule Poirot outing. In recent years, the actor-turned-director has helmed and starred in three adaptations of Agatha Christie's best-selling mysteries. As the mustachioed Detective Poirot, Branagh has had varying degrees of success. Kenneth Branagh's first Hercule Poirot movie, 2017's Murder on the Orient Express, made an impressive $352.8 million at the box office, but received mixed reviews. The oft-criticized sequel, 2022's Death on the Nile, barely made back its budget.
