In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Sanctuary", the station is visited by a previously-unseen species called the Skrreeans, appearing out of the nearby wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant. The Skrreeans have trouble communicating at first, as the station's universal translator can't get a handle on their language. Eventually, the translator kicks in, and a woman named Haneek (Deborah May) steps forward to speak for the Skrreeans. She explains that their species was recently conquered by the military force of T-Rogorans and kept under military occupation for years. It wasn't until the T-Rogorans were conquered by an even more powerful military — the Dominion — that they were freed. Now the Skrreeans wander the galaxy, lost and homeless, looking for a new homeworld.
At first Major Kira (Nana Visitor) seems amenable to the idea of the Skrreeans settling on her nearby home planet of Bajor ... until she learns that there are millions of them.

Philip McKeon, the former child actor who played young Tommy Hyatt on the 1976-1985 CBS sitcom Alice, died today in Texas after a long illness. The elder brother of Facts of Life actress Nancy McKeon was 55.
His death was announced by family spokesman Jeff Ballard.
“We are all beyond heartbroken and devastated over Phil’s passing,” Ballard said in a statement. “His wonderful sense of humor, kindness and loyalty will be remembered by all who crossed his path in life.”
McKeon would go on to appear in such TV series as The Love Boat, Amazing Stories and Favorite Son but is best known for his first role as the precocious son of the title character in Alice. Linda Lavin starried as a recently widowed mother who relocates with her son from New Jersey to Phoenix and makes ends meet as a waitress while trying to launch a singing career. The...

The pieces finally came together, literally, as Season 2 of Fox’s Lucifer came to a close on Monday night. But with conflicting family agendas at hand, what ultimate use was made of the Flaming Sword?

In fact, assembling the Flaming Sword, even with the key now found, was easier said that done, seeing as Amenadiel needed some time “to process” his demarcation as the Favorite Son. Disclaimer: Every single word in this story may be true, but we recommend taking them with a Wall-sized heaping of salt. Because when Game of Thrones‘ Kit Harington says he’s only going to be in the HBO drama’s new season as a corpse… we really don’t believe he’s just going to lie there like casket fodder.
But that’s what the actor recently told Time Out London, saying that the only new scenes he’s filmed for the series were “scenes of me being dead” and joked “It’s some of my best work.”

George R. R. Martin is still working on The Winds of Winter, the latest in his series of novels on which HBO’s Game of Thrones is based, but he dropped a tease as tasty as Arbor Gold in a recent interview: The novel will include a twist that involves a character who’s dead on the TV show but alive in his books — meaning the series probably won’t be able to include said twist in a future episode.
“The show can’t do this, unfortunately, because they’ve killed a character I have not killed,” Martin told IGN.

“I didn’t leave Hell just to step into another one,” huffs Fox’s newest crime solver Lucifer, complaining about being called in to investigate the murder of a security guard who’s neither interesting nor handsome.
Yet while series star Tom Ellis (Rush) infuses the devil with enough roguish charm to leave the audience more amused than aghast at such naughty one-liners, the unfortunate fact remains that the case-of-the-week aspects of Lucifer sometimes feel a bit like torture.

Fresh from its sneak at Telluride, "Labor Day" had its official world premiere at the Toronto film festival on Saturday. Favorite son Jason Reitman returned to the fest for the first time since 2009 when "Up in the Air" began its race for the Oscars here. While that film received near-universal praise, his adaptation of Joyce Maynard's novel about a single mother (Kate Winslet) and her son (Gatlin Griffith) who give shelter to an escaped convict (Josh Brolin) in the late summer of 1987 is drawing divided opinions. For the film to work, audiences must accept that Winslet's character -- who is battling depression -- would allow Brolin's to talk his way into making her take him home despite her misgivings. A certain segment just won't go along for this ride, but for those who do the payoff is worth it. Winslet -- who has reaped a jaw-dropping six Oscar nomination.

On tonight’s Colbert Report, Stephen broke character to deliver a heartfelt tribute to his mother, Lorna Tuck Colbert, who passed away last week at 92. He somehow managed to hold back the tears clearly desperate to emerge as he spoke of Lorna’s childhood, sense of fun, and commitment to prayer and family. “I know it may sound greedy to want more days with a person who lived so long,” he said. “But the fact that my mother was 92 does not diminish it; it only magnifies the enormity of the room whose door has now quietly shut.”
“And that’s it!
