1990's Weirdest TV Show Was A Musical Crime Drama That Lasted 11 Episodes
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Even 35 years after its short-lived run on ABC, the late Steven Bochco's and William M. Finkelstein's "Cop Rock" is a tough sell. "Cop Rock" was about a group of Los Angeles police officers who traversed the city investigating crimes, arresting perps, and facing the every drama of living in the City of Angels. The cops were played by a talented ensemble that included Anne Bobby, Ronny Cox, James McDaniel, Paul McCrane, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Cch Pounder, and several others.

The odd angle was that "Cop Rock" was also a musical, featuring several new songs — some composed by Randy Newman — in every episode. The cop characters, as well as the criminals, would sing about their pained lives of crime/crimefighting, and occasionally dance. It's a weird idea. "Live-action musical cop series" is an elevator pitch that would be turned down everywhere.

What Happened To The Cast Of The George Lopez Show?
Image
Back in the 20th century, it was very common to see a stand-up comic enter the Hollywood pipeline by starring in their own sitcom based on their acts. Comedians like Bob Newhart, Martin Lawrence, and Roseanne Barr went from performing on small stages around the country to appearing in basically every living room in America thanks to the miracle of television. But when it came to the Latino community, there was a clear lack of representation. That is, until George Lopez arrived on the scene in 2002 with "The George Lopez Show."

Created by Lopez, "The Drew Carey Show" creator Bruce Helford, and "Roseanne" writer Robert Borden,"George Lopez" premiered on March 27, 2002, after the Los Angeles native had tried to make a TV show happen since the early 1990s. He finally achieved his goal when he met Sandra Bullock backstage after a performance at the Brea Improv Comedy Club in 2000. With the award-winning actress' help,...

The Best Patrick Swayze Movies: Five of Our Favorites
Image
Patrick Swayze was one of a kind. He’s the only actor I can think of who was as comfortable cutting a rug on the dance floor as demolishing a room full of bad guys with his fists of fury. When he passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009, we lost an icon who was never really recognized as the legend he is in his time. In the years since many Patrick Swayze movies have become cult favourites, and with a Road House remake recently a hit, we decided now would be a good time to pick the five best Patrick Swayze movies.

Red Dawn (1984)

John Millius’s cold war “what if” thriller goes down in the history books as the first-ever PG-13 movie. It was also Patrick Swayze’s first major leading role, with him best known up to this point for a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders.

“You’ve never seen a nose job ruin a career”: Charlie Sheen Was Vile for What He Said About His Co-Star Jennifer Grey
Image
Let’s just call it what it is: Charlie Sheen has never been one to hold back. And on that fateful day in 2017, he took his unfiltered nature to new heights when he casually trashed his former co-star Jennifer Grey in front of a live audience. We mean, here’s a guy who thinks no filter is the best filter, and frankly, it often lands him in hot water.

When asked about his past leading ladies, Sheen didn’t just rank them; he essentially bulldozed their reputations. His harsh words for Jennifer Grey, famously known for her role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, were nothing short of vile.

‘Emilia Pérez’ wins Oscar for Best Original Song, blocking Diane Warren for the 16th time
Image
The Oscar winner for Best Original Song, as predicted by Gold Derby's odds, was "El Mal" from Emilia Pérez. It was written by Camille and Clément Ducol, who also composed the film's score, and the film's director, Jacques Audiard. It's the first Oscar win for all three songwriters. Unfortunately, that meant a 16th loss for Diane Warren, who was nominated for penning "The Journey" from The Six Triple Eight and to date still hasn't won a competitive Oscar.

This year's Oscar race started at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards last fall, and it was a good night for Emilia Pérez, which won Best Music Themed Film, Biopic, or Musical; Best Song — Onscreen Performance (for Zoe Saldaña singing "El Mal"); and Best Score — Feature Film. However, "El Mal" didn't win Best Song - Feature Film. That was Warren for "The Journey," while "Never Too Late" was named the best song from a documentary.

Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future (1985)
Secret Cinema returns, after three-year gap
Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future (1985)
Secret Cinema, sort of under new ownership, will be back this summer with a Grease production taking place in London.

Considering how much it used to dominate some of the UK entertainment website headlines, things have been awfully quiet in the world of Secret Cinema for the last few years. Right up until the pesky pandemic, it was putting on premium priced event screenings of films, surrounded by attractions and such like related to the movie in question. Films such as Back To The Future, The Empire Strikes Back and Dirty Dancing were amongst the higher profile attractions. Over time, the price went up and the pushback grew, but tickets still sold in great numbers.

Covid-19 though changed everything, and a controlling interest in the company was sold. That deal went through in November 2022, with TodayTix Production Holdings Limited taking a 75% controlling stake in Secret Cinema. Since then, very little.

“I’m thrilled that The Hunger Games is in the hands of gifted playwright Conor McPherson and accomplished director Matthew Dunster,” Collins said. “Conor has done a fantastic adaptation, which is quite unique from the screenplay. And Matthew’s immersive, dynamic staging gives the audience a brand-new way to experience the story.”

Set in a dystopian future, The Hunger Games follows Katniss Everdeen, a teenager forced to compete in a televised battle for survival against other tributes. The novel, released in 2008, led...

Patrick Swayze's 'Road House' Charts on Tubi as a Free to Stream Hit
Image
Classic Patrick Swayze action movie Road House is kicking butt in the Tubi Top 10. While the film recently received the obligatory remake, with Jake Gyllenhaal stepping into the role previously occupied by the beloved actor, the 1989 original is proving that despite its harsh reviews from critics, the masculine movie can still draw in an audience.

This cult favorite is directed by Rowdy Herrington, and saw Swayze at his charismatic best as bouncer James Dalton, who takes his job at the refurbished Double Deuce roadside bar seriously enough to expand his reach to protecting the small town of Jasper, Missouri against the corrupt businessman Frank Tilghman. With plenty of brutal brawls, sub-plots of redemption, and Swayze’s swagger at an all-time high, the film has continued to be a presence in pop culture for decades - even becoming a running joke in Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy. Road House!

‘I’m still hungry’: 16-time nominee Diane Warren on her 2025 Oscar chances, biopic plans, and why she’s already chasing her next hit
Image
In 2022, superstar songwriter Diane Warren was presented with an Academy Honorary Award “for her genius, generosity, and passionate commitment to the power of song in film.” But that prestigious honor hardly diminished her desire to take home a trophy for Best Original Song. “I still want the competitive one!” she tells Gold Derby. “My Oscar, he’s very lonely. He sits there by himself. He wants a boyfriend. He needs a friend.”

As the composer of 33 top 10 hits (nine of which topped the Billboard Hot 100); a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee; and the recipient of a Grammy, an Emmy, an Ivor Novello Award, two Golden Globes, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Warren clearly has nothing to prove. But she’s never been shy about the fact that she really wants to win that elusive Oscar, which she calls the “gold standard” of all awards and “the coolest thing in the world.

Dino Morea Reflects On A Film He Loved and His Salsa Dancing In the 2006 release Holiday
Image
Pooja Bhatt’s Holiday, which was released on February 10, 2006, featured Dino Morea as a Salsa dancer. Dino Morea’s swan-like grace in the Salsa dancing, done with such precise and yet spontaneous élan, leaves us watching open-mouthed. Subhash K Jha revisits the film, and we hear from Dino Morea about a film he loved, Holiday.

Here’s an actor who has so far been wrongly, badly, or inadequately used. It’s a pleasure beyond measure to watch Dino do his ‘dirty’ dancing accompanied by some truly innovative music(Ranjit Barot) and choreography(Sandeep Soparkar).

For her second directorial venture, Pooja Bhatt has chosen a dream team. All her cast and crew conspire to create a Goan romance with a velvety Valentinian vibrancy. You can’t see Holiday qualifying for an Oscar nomination. But the gawky-chick-meets-graceful-dancer romance keeps a smile alive till the end. And that’s no small mercy!

When Dino,...

Was Patrick Swayze Hit by a Real Log In Road House?
Image
Movie Legend: Patrick Swayze was hit by a real log during the filming of a fight sequence in Road House.

Something that filmmakers have been struggling with for over a century now is how to create the best sense of verisimilitude for their audience. The issue, of course, is that one of the easiest ways to create a sense of verisimilitude is to just, you know, actually do the thing that you're filming. Luckily for the safety of animals over the years, filmmakers' desire to have realistic scenes with horses dying eventually led to the creation of an oversight organization dedicated to "No animals were harmed in the making of this film" (you can read the tragic origins of that phrase in an old Movie Legends Revealed here).

That same desire for verisimilitude has led to Tom Cruise's famously doing a lot of stunts in his Mission: Impossible films...

Interview: Heart Eyes Director Josh Ruben Discusses Blending Meet-Cutes and Bloodbaths to Create an Unforgettable Valentine’s Day Slasher
Image
Heart Eyes oozes with blood and charm. The slasher pic delivers as both a romantic comedy and horror movie, just in time to make Valentine’s Day a little more fun this year. Director Josh Ruben takes cues from Jason Lives and Sleepless in Seattle, making meet-cutes and bloodbaths a damn fine pairing.

The titular killer is here to ruin Valentine’s Day. No lovers are safe. Everyone in Seattle is on edge, including Ally (Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding) as they fall for each other—both literally and figuratively. Co-written by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day), Heart Eyes is a sincere love letter to slashers and rom-coms.

Ruben stages some familiar genre tropes with great enthusiasm, similar to his directorial debut, Werewolves Within. Recently, the filmmaker spoke with Daily Dead about his latest acclaimed film.

[Editor's Note: Minor plot points and scenes are discussed, so if you want to remain entirely spoiler free, feel free to read this after checking out Heart Eyes for yourself. That said, if you've seen the latest trailer / clips,...

Diane Warren has a 16th chance to score that elusive Oscar
Image
With her nomination this year for “The Journey” from the Netflix historical drama The Six Triple Eight, Diane Warren has now contended 16 times at the Oscars, including the last eight years in a row, for Best Original Song. But the veteran artist — who has a Grammy, an Emmy, and two Golden Globes in her trophy case — has yet to score a competitive Oscar. Could this be her year?

Warren does, however, have an Honorary Oscar, which she collected in 2022 for her impressive body of work. That made her the first and currently only songwriter to receive that recognition from the Motion Picture Academy.

Now I Understand Why Kieran Culkin Is The Best Supporting Actor Oscar Frontrunner
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for A Real Pain.

After seeing Culkin's standout performance in A Real Pain, his current frontrunner status for the 2025 Best Supporting Actor Oscar makes a lot of sense. Despite his supporting role, Culkin leads the cast of A Real Pain alongside Will Sharpe (The White Lotus), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), Kurt Egyiawan (The Agency), and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), who also wrote and directed the film. After his win at the 2025 Golden Globes, Kieran Culkin has emerged as the frontrunner in the Best Supporting Actor race at the 2025 Oscars.

Now that A Real Pain is streaming on Hulu, it's easy to understand for viewers just watching it for the first time why Culkin is the frontrunner for the Supporting Actor Oscar based on his performance. The 2025 Golden Globe results provide a strong indication of how several 2025 Oscars races will shape up, including Culkin's surprise win over...

Patrick Swayze's 'Road House' Will Stream on Tubi in February
Image
There's no doubt that the action genre reigned supreme in the 1980s, and helped make stars out of folks like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Swarzengger. Franchises like Rocky, Rambo, and Conan were all the rage as the decade gave birth to new ones such as Terminator and Predator. Flying under the radar of all of these was Patrick Swayze, who was carving out his own niche as a versatile actor that was more than just muscle. The Outsiders and Dirty Dancing showed he could do more than just fight, and aside from Ghost, it's perhaps the 1989 film Road House that he's most remembered for, and now, after being unavailable to stream for a minute, you can relive all the action for free next month.

Per Tubi, director Rowdy Herrington's Road House will premiere on the free streaming service on Feb. 1, giving you the chance to see one of Swayze...

'He Was Going to Do the Movie': Jesse Eisenberg Laments Losing Doctor Who Star for Major Role in New Film
Image
Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg’s latest project A Real Pain, which he wrote, directed, and starred in, very nearly had the current “Doctor” from Doctor Who in a significant role in the film. Per Collider, the Now You See Me star almost nabbed the Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa to play the role of a Rwandan Genocide survivor in the movie.

In A Real Pain, Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin (Succession) play cousins David and Benji Kaplan, who don’t have much in common but decide to journey to Poland for a Holocaust tour to honor their late grandmother. Eisenberg drew on his own family history for inspiration for the film and included the home where his great-aunt grew up in the movie.

These 1980s Classics Are Finally Getting the National Respect They Deserve
Image
The National Film Registry stands apart from awards like the Oscars in the way it looks at the big picture. 25 films are chosen each year for preservation based on their historic or artistic value, with a ten-year wait before becoming eligible. Freed from the passing norms of the moment, it can avoid the trap of ignoring "lesser" genres like comedy and horror, something the Oscars has yet to figure out. Its selections -- which include at least some input from the public -- thus tend to be a stronger representation of these movies as an art form, which can take on some amazing and surprising shapes.

2024's crop featured an unusual number of 1980s blockbusters, including the likes of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Beverly Hills Cop and Dirty Dancing. They're notable, not because they're unworthy, and indeed they're not the first commercial films of the 80s to make the list.

10 Movies That Were Surprisingly Perfect
Image
Audiences often generate their own assumptions about certain movies before they even watch them, but some movies surpass all expectations and become classics. A troubled production is often an indicator that a movie will end up as a flop, but behind-the-scenes drama doesn't always derail a movie. Classics like The Godfather and Dirty Dancing were almost shut down, and it's a wonder that they ever got finished.

In other cases, audiences can form opinions about a movie before watching it, only for the movie to pack a surprising punch. For example, Titanic was seen as an expensive gamble by a director with no experience making period romances, and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy was initially derided as an ill-judged attempt to film Tolkien's unfilmable novels. Ultimately, movies shouldn't be judged before people watch them, because some of them can overcome the odds.

Jennifer Grey remembers the awkward love scene between her and Patrick Swayze that they attempted to film for Red Dawn
Image
Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze are forever entrenched in the annals of romance cinema with their roles in Dirty Dancing. However, they would actually couple up a few years earlier in the action thriller Red Dawn in 1984. Grey would recently appear on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast and recount a time they were filming a scene where their characters were supposed to snuggle up in a sleeping bag and become intimate with each other. The chemistry between the two stars in their later provocative hit would resonate with audiences, but their first attempt to make love on screen became so anxiety-induced that Grey said Swayze had started the scene fairly inebriated.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Grey confessed, “We were in this, you know, sleeping bag and he, I guess, was nervous or whatever. And he came into the sleeping bag drunk, and he didn’t know his lines.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan continues to make history in 2024
Image
We are just past the 40th anniversary of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It's been now 42 years since the film came out and captivated audiences everywhere. It brought back an iconic Star Trek villain in Khan Noonien Singh and showcased one of the most impressive hero/villain dynamics in franchise history with Khan and James T. Kirk.

The performances of Ricardo Montalban and William Shatner captivated a generation and so much of the modern Star Trek trend follows the model that Wrath of Khan created. Even after 42 years the fans still flock to the film. In many ways, it's the touchtone of Star Trek's creativity.

This is why it was picked, alongside 24 other films, to be added to the National Film Registry for Preservation. The selections for the class of 2024 range from 1895's "Annabelle Serpentine Dance all the way to 2010's The Social Network. And no, the '1895' wasn't a typo.

A powerful trailer for Wish You Were Here presents a touching story of love and loss for Julia Stiles’s feature directorial debut
Image
I am starting to question if Lionsgate has an under-the-table deal with Kleenex because, after watching the studio’s Wish You Were Here trailer, I think this movie will make people cry. And not just a little; I’m talking about Niagara Falls, Frankie. Niagara Falls. Wish You Were Here offers an intimate look at Julia Stiles‘s feature directorial debut. In February, the Golden Globe-nominated actress-turned-filmmaker told Deadline she’s “been looking for years for the right story to tell” as a director, and she’s finally found it with an adaptation of Renee Carlino’s best-selling novel of the same name.

Here’s the official synopsis for Wish You Were Here courtesy of Lionsgate:

“Julia Stiles makes her directorial debut in a brilliantly warm and romantic film based on the bestselling novel, Wish You Were Here. Isabelle Fuhrman, Mena Massoud, Jennifer Grey and Kelsey Grammer star in a...

'The Social Network' Among 25 Classic Films Added to National Film Registry
Image
As the year comes to a close, The National Film Preservation Board has announced which 25 films will be entering The Library of Congress this year. Since Congress passed the National Film Preservation Act in 1988, which established the National Film Preservation Board of the Library of Congress, 25 films from a wide range of times and genres are carefully considered each year for entry into the Library of Congress. These films are deemed culturally or historically significant and will be conserved by the Library, which will make them more available to the American public.

This year, the Board has chosen, as they often set out to do, a wide range of films to join the 900 other preserved films of history, from the genre-breaking 1974 horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to David Fincher’s modern masterpiece The Social Network. While additions like the 1953 sci-fi classic Invaders from Mars and the Cohen brothers'...

David Fincher’s movie about how Facebook started and became the mammoth that it is today, starring Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg and Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin, has been added to the National Film Registry, and it is no surprise why.

The Social Network no doubt still holds up as a must-watch, not just for its take on the messy birth of Facebook that ushered in a new era of the internet, but for its sharp commentary on power, ambition, and most importantly the thin line between good and bad. In a world ruled by social media, the film’s themes hit harder than ever, making it a modern classic that still sparks conversations.

Andrew Garfield’s The Social Network is now immortal!

Out of the 2 million films in the Library of Congress, only 900 have made...

The Best Star Trek Movie Just Got Added To The National Film Registry
Image
Every year, film buffs assemble online to see which 25 movies will be added to the Library of Congress' National Film Registry -- a list that includes titles you'd expect like "The Godfather," "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," "Thelma & Louise," and "Casablanca." For 2024, the new additions bump the Nfr's total catalog to 900 films, bringing in classics and modern classics alike in a crop of movies spanning decades.

For sci-fi fans, the main attraction this year will likely be "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." The 1982 theatrical sequel is still held up as one of the high watermarks for the entire "Star Trek" franchise, and in the eyes of many fans, its greatest singular achievement. Spock's noble sacrifice in the film has gone down in history alongside the Darth Vader reveal and the "tears in rain" monologue from "Blade Runner" as an all-time iconic sci-fi moment.

Library of Congress Adds Beverly Hills Cop, Dirty Dancing, The Social Network to National Film Registry
Image
The Library of Congress is back to share one of the most-anticipated lists of the year: its selection of movies that will be placed in the National Film Registry for preservation.

This year’s collection of movies that the United States National Film Preservation Board has deemed as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” span from 1895 to 2010, with the public nominating more than 6,700 titles for consideration. Among the highlights are Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Dirty Dancing (1987), Spy Kids (2001), No Country for Old Men (2007), and the newest film added to the registry, David Fincher’s social media drama The Social Network (2010).

“Films reflect our nation’s history and culture and must be preserved in our national library for generations to come.
