Actors Who Were Almost Cast As Star Trek's Geordi La Forge Before LeVar Burton
Image
When "Star Trek: The Next Generation" first began in 1987, LeVar Burton was probably the biggest star in the cast. He had already been nominated for three Emmys, once in 1977 for playing Kunta Kinte in the celebrated miniseries "Roots," and two more in 1985 and 1986 for hosting the beloved book-based kid program "Reading Rainbow." The latter show would end up netting him 12 Emmy wins between 1990 and 2007, and cement his reputation as one of his generation's preeminent TV celebrities. The fact that he would be selected to play chief engineer Geordi La Forge on "Star Trek" only more deeply entrenched Burton in the public's awareness.

Geordi La Forge was, more than anything, a nerd. He was deeply interested in machines and engines, and Burton was given the lion's share of NextGen's nonsensical polysyllabic technobabble. He was also notoriously undersexed. Geordi was equipped with a visor that tapped directly into his brain, feeding him...

Goldie Hawn / Credits: Today

They had been together for over four decades, becoming one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting romances ever. Their first meeting was actually in 1966, but there wasn’t an immediate spark. Following Conference's Collapse, Where Can You Watch Former Pac-12 Football Teams This Fall?
Image
The flagship Pac-12 Network as well as its regional sister channels will go off-air late in June.

Football fans, the 2024 college football season is set to get underway on Saturday, Aug. 24 with the four-game appetizer known as Week 0. There are a lot of changes across college football from an expanded 12-team College Football Playoff to conference realignment. But, one of the major stories is the fact that one of the most storied leagues in college football history, the Pac-12, essentially has ceased to exist. While the conference technically still exists, it only has two member institutions as everyone else is scattered to the winds in leagues across the country. Oregon State and Washington State are the only remaining Pac-12 teams, but with squads in the Acc, Big 12, and Big Ten, you might be wondering how you can catch all of the action from the erstwhile Pac-12 teams. Below, we’ll...

Anthea Sylbert, Costume Designer on ‘Chinatown,’ ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘Shampoo,’ Dies at 84
Image
Anthea Sylbert, an Oscar-nominated costume designer who worked on some of the signature films of the late 1960s and 1970s, including “Rosemary’s Baby,” “Carnal Knowledge,” “Chinatown,” “Shampoo,” “Julia” and “King Kong,” and a producer later in her career on a number of films starring Goldie Hawn, has died. She was 84.

Her death was confirmed by Robert Romanus, her stepson.

Sylbert, subject of a forthcoming documentary by Sakis Lalas titled “Anthea Sylbert: My Life in 3 Acts,” also served as an executive at United Artists and Warner Bros., at a time when there were few women in the C-suites of Hollywood. She also worked repeatedly with director Mike Nichols, both onscreen and onstage, and was Oscar-nominated for her costuming on period films “Chinatown” (1974) and “Julia” (1977).

Assessing Sylbert’s work on “Chinatown,” GlamAmor, a website dedicated to the history of fashion in film, said in 2012: “Sylbert crafted clothes for Faye Dunaway that...

How The Dcu's The Authority Can Parody the McU's Avengers
Image
The Authority movie in James Gunn's Dcu can parody the McU's Avengers with The Americans. The Americans from the Wildstorm Authority comics harshly parodied Marvel's iconic team of heroes. The DC Universe movie can do the same thing while also inverting Marvel Studios' flagship superhero team.

The Authority is just one of the projects planned for the upcoming DC Universe movie reboot, with the first of these movies being James Gunn's Superman: Legacy. It's unknown who will direct The Authority or when it will come out, but the movie will likely adapt the team's stories from the Wildstorm Universe. This could possibly put it in direct contrast with the other Dcu entries, but there's a chance for the film to outright parody a rival studio and its superhero movies.

Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are the premiere names in the superhero movie genre, but that may not...

"Superman Defeats Nihilism": Grant Morrison Loved an Obscure Alan Moore Story So Much They Almost Remixed It
Image
"The Big Chill" is one of Grant Morrison's favorite Alan Moore stories, featuring the hero Majestic and the end of the universe. Majestic and other immortals must survive as the universe approaches absolute zero. Morrison considered remixing "The Big Chill" as an official Superman story, but abandoned the idea.

Everyone knows about Alan Moore’s superhero epics like Watchmen and Batman: The Killing Joke, but one near-forgotten story from 1997 was recently listed by none other than Grant Morrison as one of their favorite obscure comics by the writer with the most impressive beard in comics history.

When answering reader questions in their newsletter Xanaduum, Morrison noted the story “The Big Chill” as one of their favorite Moore stories. Appearing in 1997’s Wildstorm Spotlight #1, the story featured the Wildstorm hero Majestic at the end of the universe.

Coming from the creative team of Moore, Carlos D’Anda, Richard Friend, Olyptics, and Mike Heisler,...

Image
Knightmage100's jaw-dropping Maxx cosplay resurrects the iconic superhero of the "extreme 1990s" in an epic new shoot. The Maxx was a different kind of Image title, contrasting with the flashy early Image comics. It became a cult icon, thanks to the short-lived animated series on MTV. It pays loving homage to the character's distinctive features and locations.

"World War III": Why Marvel & DC's Lost Crossover Will Probably Never Be Seen Again
Image
"World War III" was a forgotten Marvel/DC crossover from 1997 that merged the Wildstorm and Heroes Reborn universes. The crossover allowed creators to do whatever they wanted with characters, resulting in a high body count and traitorous heroes. The story will never be republished due to real world events and the integration of Wildstorm characters into the main DC Universe.

While a Marvel/DC crossover is highly unlikely these days, there was a time when the two companies pitted their characters together on a fairly regular basis. In spite of all that, there is one story that has been forgotten, and really only became an official “Marvel/DC” crossover years after its original publication. This is the bizarre yet true story of “World War III,” a crossover from 1997 that’s since been lost to the ages.

The story of how “World War III” came to be starts the year before its publication.

X-Men: The Animated Series Pulled A Trick On Marvel To Get The Show Approved
Image
When the X-Men debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 1963, their superhero costumes looked a little more like school uniforms. The team at the time was made up of the characters Cyclops, Ice Man, Beast, Marvel Girl, and Angel, and they all wore a notable yellow-and-blue ensemble with hoods to partially cover their faces. "The Uncanny X-Men" also allowed creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to skip over the bothersome task of having to invent a superhero origin story. Rather than a tale of cosmic rays, gamma radiation, spider-bites, or some other powers-granting conceit, the X-Men were merely born with their abilities. They are mutants.

When the X-Men universe expanded to include more and more characters, the blue-and-yellow ensembles gave way to a wide variety of outlandish costumes, each one adhering to the styles of the day. Those who read X-Men comics in the 1990s, for instance,...

Judge Dredd: Is There Another Reboot in the Works?
Image
The original Judge Dredd comics explored a world devastated by a series of international conflicts, leading to the rise of megacities. Fans of the gritty fare are eager for a prequel or further exploration of Judge Dredd's backstory.

Judge Dredd presented quite an interesting conundrum to comic enthusiasts. What if the world was left in shambles, and it was up to military law enforcement to pick up the pieces? Although not directly referenced in either cinematic attempt to capture the Dredd mythos – from Stallone's sad 1995 satire to the dismally dark remake – the core concept of the comics was simple: what happened to the world after international conflicts ruined what we once knew?

In the original Judge Dredd comic series, the world was left in tatters. The planet had been saved, yes, but it was radioactive and nearly unlivable. Enter the megacities. Megacities – entire continents of skyscrapers – exist about...

Tom Cruise Almost Made a Sleeper Movie - Which Was a Right Fit for Him
Image
Superhero movies have become all the rage in the past few decades, and much like comic books themselves, they've dominated the conversation of "comic book adaptations." Even within shared superhero universes, however, so comics go for different tones, scopes and genres. Such was the case with Wildstorm's Sleeper, which almost had a movie adaptation starring one of Hollywood's greatest stars.

Tom Cruise has been associated with several iconic movies and roles, though superhero films have always managed to escape him. This was nearly changed, however, with a planned film for a comic book series that spun off from Jim Lee's Wildcats book. Sadly, this movie never came to be, even though it would have been right up the actor's espionage and action-oriented alley.

Wesley Snipes Is The Best Actor Ever
Image
In 2021, Wesley Snipes used an Esquire "What I've Learned" column to make a fascinating confession: "I've got to learn how to be a movie star."

Snipes was 58 at the time of the article's publication, and enjoying a career renaissance due to his portrayal of actor-director D'Urville Martin in Craig Brewster's uproarious "Dolemite Is My Name." Though he'd officially made his comeback as an aging gang leader in Spike Lee's "Chi-Raq" four years prior, Martin was the perfect vehicle through which Snipes could examine the frustration of an ambitious artist shunted from A-list roles to low-aiming exploitation flicks.

Snipes' Martin is a bitter, alcoholic filmmaker trying, and failing miserably, to make nightclub comic Rudy Ray Moore (Eddie Murphy) look like a Blaxploitation action star on par with Richard Roundtree. Martin is a defeated man, and it's hard not to sense Snipes reckoning with the sun setting on his own action-hero stardom.

Goldie Hawn has been a star for more than 50 years. She got her start dancing and giggling, often in a bikini, on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In," a seminal TV comedy series of the late 1960s. She left the show to focus on her film career. At first, her film roles were pretty similar to the free spirit/dumb blonde act she did on "Laugh-In," but her potential as a comedic actor shone through, and by the 1980s, she was leading movies herself. After starring in some classics of the '80s and '90s, she left acting behind in the early 2000s, focusing on her family, writing her autobiography, and running the Hawn Foundation, a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged kids perform better in school.

After a 15-year hiatus from the big screen, Goldie Hawn returned to star with Amy Schumer in the comedy "Snatched." Since then, she's appeared alongside her real-life partner,...

How DC's The Authority Changed Comics Forever
Image
In 1999, DC Comics/Wildstorm published The Authority, and superheroes were never the same again. Modernizing and completely rethinking the whole concept, The Authority changed an entire genre by bringing it into the new millennium, and its influence is still being felt to this day in the superhero epics that grace movie screens the world over.

Originally published by the Wildstorm imprint of DC Comics, The Authority’s roots can be traced all the way back to 1992, when seven popular artists split from Marvel to form Image Comics - a brand-new company where each partner was free to publish their own comics through the formation of their individual studios. Superstar artist Jim Lee’s studio eventually came to be known as Wildstorm, which put out a whole universe of superhero titles following Lee’s debut series WildC.A.T.s. Lee later sold his company to DC Comics at the tail end of 1998, just...

The Court of Owls once ruled Gotham City from the shadows, but now they are moving into the open, attempting a hostile takeover of the Halo Corporation in WildCats #6. The issue is written by Matthew Rosenberg, drawn by Stephen Segovia and Tom Derenick, colored by Elmer Santos and lettered by Ferran Delgado. Something is amiss with the Halo Corporation, and the issue opens with Clark Kent trying to get information out of Marlowe, Halo’s CEO. Woody Harrelson Conned Wesley Snipes On The Set Of White Men Can't Jump
Image
"White Men Can't Jump" is a rare example of moviemaking where everything seemed to come together perfectly. Writer/director Ron Shelton was able to combine his love for LA and streetball with this 1992 effort, and found two stars who couldn't have had better chemistry, both on camera and off. Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, who played Sidney Deane and Billy Hoyle respectively, were effortlessly captivating as struggling Venice Beach basketball players who hustle their way through LA's streetball scene. Had Snipes not sabotaged his "White Men Can't Jump" audition with Keanu Reeves, things might have been different. But as it stands, the movie is one of the best basketball films ever made, largely due to its two leads and their easy rapport.

After Sidney encounters Billy during a pickup game on the famed Venice Beach courts, he invites "the chump" to play, only to discover that Billy is good — maybe even better than him.

DC's Heroic Assassin Grifter Has Never Looked More Alluring In New Cover Art
Image
The DC Comics superhero Grifter, originally part of Jim Lee's beloved Wildstorm imprint before the Wildstorm Universe formally joined the DC Universe in 2011, has never looked better than in a new variant cover for WildC.A.T.s #4 by artist David Talaski.

Grifter - otherwise known as Cole Cash - was first introduced at the Image Comic Wildstorm imprint in 1992s WildC.A.T.s #1 and proved to be a successful character. He quickly gained popularity because of his brash attitude, penchant for violence, and his iconic yet casual costume design. David Talaski's variant cover for WildC.A.T.s #4 - written by Matthew Rosenberg with art by Stephen Segovia - brings all those reasons for Grifter's popularity into sharp focus, highlighting Cole's impressive physique and love of weapons, as well as his beer drinking, pizza eating personality.

One White Men Can't Jump Character Was Particularly Tough To Write
Image
The story of how "White Men Can't Jump" got made is an interesting one, and certainly worth looking back on given the upcoming remake starring Jack Harlow and Sinqua Walls. From the fact that Keanu Reeves auditioned — and failed miserably — for the role that would eventually fall to Woody Harrelson, to the fact that Wesley Snipes was, by all accounts, very bad at basketball, it's almost amazing that the film was not only a success but has had a lasting legacy as one of the best movies about roundball ever made.

A big part of that is due to the chemistry between Harrelson and Snipes, who have been connected over the years going all the way back to the 1986 high school football comedy "Wildcats." Their performances as Billy Hoyle and Sidney Dean, and the way that their real-life friendship pops in every scene they share, have helped "White Men Can't Jump...

Wesley Snipes Left Keanu Reeves Out To Dry In Their White Men Can't Jump Audition
Image
The task of casting two actors that can play believable friends is a feat that can't be faked, and it was only half the battle when it came time to cast the basketball buddy comedy "White Men Can't Jump." Writer-director Ron Shelton was looking for more than just chemistry between his two leads. He also needed actors that looked like they belonged on the court, which made it a grueling casting process for its prospective stars.

Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson were already longtime friends before "White Men Can't Jump" fell into their laps. They'd met on the set of "Wildcats," another sports comedy starring Goldie Hawn, and had spent something like six years cultivating a rapid-fire rapport. That pre-established chemistry should have made their casting a no-brainer — if only Snipes and Harrelson were as much of a match on the court as they were off of it.

"People think Wesley is obvious casting,...

‘Death Becomes Her’ 30th anniversary: Let’s re-live the 1992 Oscar-winning comedy
Image
In between his mega-hit “Back to the Future” sequels and his Oscar juggernaut crowdpleaser “Forrest Gump,” Robert Zemeckis directed the sublime black comedy “Death Becomes Her,” released to theaters 30 years ago on July 31, 1992. In a summer of mostly safe, audience-friendly comedies like “Sister Act” and “HouseSitter,” “Death Becomes Her” entered the marketplace an oddball piece of dark, absurdist humor that didn’t fit into a clear category. Let’s take a moment and reflect on the “Death Becomes Her” 30th anniversary.

Starring Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn, the film tells of a fading actress named Madeline (Streep) who takes a magical immortality treatment that makes her beautiful and ageless, only to discover her old rival Helen (Hawn) long ago consumed the potion. After Madeline’s husband Ernest (Willis) pushes Madeline down the stairs, breaking her neck, havoc and hilarity ensue as both Madeline and Helen suffer increasingly debilitating...

Rumored Exes Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett Reunite at the "Hsmtmts" Premiere
Image
In case you need photographic evidence that nature is healing, we present: Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett on the red carpet together in 2022. The costars and rumored exes reunited at the season three premiere of "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" on July 27, and there was not one ounce of bad blood in sight. The pair, who portray onscreen love interests Nini and Ricky on the Disney+ series, were all smiles and made silly faces while posing side by side. Plus, they were matching for the event - Rodrigo donned a black cutout minidress and tights, while Bassett wore a silky black suit and boots. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though; that likely wasn't planned.

After the screening wrapped, Rodrigo gave a sweet shout-out to her costars on Instagram, sharing a photo with Bassett, Matt Cornett, and Sofia Wylie, and another with the entire cast. She captioned the post,...

New on HBO Max in November 2021
Image
November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).

But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. All of that content, plus a number of library classics, including but not limited to “Moonstruck,...

HBO Max New Releases: February 2021
Image
When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.

Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

You might think that at some point we’re going to run out of comic book superheroes. Fortunately, you would be super wrong, because there’s a hell of a lot more in the world of comics than the Avengers and Justice League. And just in the last couple of weeks projects based on Rob Leifeld’s “Prophet” and Scott Lodbell’s “Ball and Chain” were announced. So here are 13 heroes we think are long overdue for the live action film treatment, from fan favorites to cult classics. Hollywood, use your Covid-19 free time and get on this now.

Rider is the most famous member of Nova Corps, the intergalactic cops seen in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” — think of them as Marvel’s version of the Green Lanterns. In comics he’s crossed paths with the Guardians, Captain Marvel and Thor over the years — in other...
