Poltergeist II: The Other Side

The Correct Order To Watch The Poltergeist Franchise
Image
"They're here" is such a simple quote, yet it's one that terrified a generation, inviting audiences into a world they had never seen before. "Poltergeist," the supernatural horror movie that is deeply rooted in the modern world, is set in a suburban house, with ghosts possessing our everyday appliances and comforts, like the TV. John Carpenter's "Halloween" brought the horror home with a serial killer that attacked not in remote houses, but in the middle of the suburbs. The "Poltergeist" franchise took things a step further by showing that ghosts could plague not just suburban neighborhoods, but even high-rise apartment buildings in the big city — somehow, an idea that isn't as commonplace as it should be.

The franchise revolves around members of the Freeling family, who become targeted by group of ghosts that terrorize and stalk them — led by a demonic entity known as the Beast. The ghosts are...

Is Hollywood’s Addiction to Sequels Cannibalizing Its Future?
Image
The other day, as I was looking up a data point on boxofficemojo.com, I noticed something that shocked me: The top 10 grossing movies of 2024, from “Inside Out 2” to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” are all sequels. Every goddamn one of them. “Wicked” and “Moana 2” will soon bring break into the top 10 — and though “Wicked” isn’t technically a sequel, when you consider how many people have seen the original Broadway show, the truth is that the movie version, as much as any sequel, is a kind-of-the-same-but-also-different follow-up to a gargantuan known quantity. It’s all part of déjà vu entertainment culture.

The reason I was shocked by the fact that I could be shocked by this is that Hollywood has been famously awash in sequels since the dawn of the Reagan era. Making jokes about the creative bankruptcy of films with Roman numerals after their title...

Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) Review
Image
The success of the original Poltergeist (1982), a masterful blend of suburban anxiety and supernatural terror, seemed to guarantee a rich future for the franchise. Directed by Tobe Hooper and famously guided by Steven Spielberg, the film remains a textbook case of how to balance heart-pounding scares with moments of familial tenderness. By contrast, Poltergeist II: The Other Side has always felt like a pale echo of its predecessor – a sequel that revisits familiar territory but struggles to carve out its own identity.

Set a year after the events of the original, Poltergeist II finds the Freeling family – Diane (JoBeth Williams), Steven (Craig T. Nelson), Robbie (Oliver Robins), and the ever-captivating Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) – attempting to rebuild their lives. Now living with Diane’s mother, they’re haunted not just by the memories of their spectral ordeal but by literal ghosts who refuse to let go. Their suburban nightmare is far from over.

Monsters True Story: What Happened To Dominique Dunne, Dominicks Daughter
Image
Warning! This post contains spoilers for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

This post contains mentions of abuse and murder.

Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story briefly refers to Dominique Dunne's real-life trial, making it hard not to wonder what happened to her. Serving as a followup to Ryan Murphy's hit show Dahmer Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story centers on Jos and Kitty Menendez's murders, who were killed by their own sons, Lyle and Erik. Like the first season of the Netflix true-crime show, Monsters, too, attempts to present a neutral perspective on the central real-life crime instead of solely framing the titular brothers as "monsters."

Given how Netflix's Monsters has received mixed reviews like its predecessor, not everyone seems to be on board with the show's approach towards true crime. However, it is still interesting...

Poltergeist's Scariest Villain Has a Fascinating Backstory
Image
With the recent reveal of the showrunners behind the upcoming Poltergeist television series, fans may be missing the beloved actors who won't be able to join the show. Among the cast members who passed during the production of the original trilogy is Julian Beck, whose performance as the ghostly Preacher Kane was the most terrifying part of Poltergeist 2: The Other Side. That was Beck's best-known screen role, but on the stage, he was the co-founder of The Living Theatre, a legendary performance group whose activities shocked a generation.

The Poltergeist franchise began with the 1982 classic that combined director Tobe Hooper's flair for scares with producer Stephen Spielberg's friendly warmth. The successful film was followed by Poltergeist 2: The Other Side (1985) and Poltergeist 3 (1988). While these sequels did not fare as well as the original, they created an iconic villain in the Preacher Kane. This grim specter traumatized...

Why Big Trouble In Little China's Marketing Campaign Left Kurt Russell Disappointed
Image
John Carpenter's 1986 action-comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is an odd duck. The plot involves an ancient wizard named Lo Pan (James Hong) who aims to kidnap, marry, and then sacrifice a green-eyed woman to break a curse he is under. The woman in question is Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), the fiancée of Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), who, fortunately, knows a little bit about evil wizards and ancient Chinese warriors. It will be up to Wang to rescue Miao Yin from Lo Pan. Also kidnapped is the green-eyed Gracie (Kim Cattrall), beloved by the dumb-as-rocks blowhard Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), essentially Wang's sidekick.

The gag of the movie is that Jack doesn't really seem to understand that he's a sidekick, and behaves like the action hero. Indeed, the whole movie seems to be a martial arts movie told from the perspective of the American guest star. Russell was featured...

Amazon's Poltergeist television series lands Prison Break and Supernatural writers
Image
The previously announced Poltergeist television series is reportedly still in development, according to Variety. On August 19, the outlet exclusively revealed that the upcoming television show being produced by Amazon MGM Studios had found its showrunners in Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson. In addition to showrunning, the duo will write and executive produce the series, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television.

No plot details have been shared just yet about the show, but we know it's inspired by the original Tobe Hooper-directed film from 1982. Poltergeist is considered a horror classic and went on to spawn two sequels, Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III, and a 2015 remake.

Vazquez has written on many popular shows, including The CW spy thriller Nikita and Fox's Prison Break, while Thompson is an accomplished comic book writer and has written for characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. He also worked...

Variety reports this afternoon that Kalinda Vazquez (“Fear the Walking Dead”) and Robbie Thompson (“Supernatural”) have come on board the upcoming Poltergeist television series as writers, showrunners, and executive producers.

Variety notes in today’s fresh report, “Exact plot details are under wraps, aside from the fact that the show is inspired by the iconic 1982 horror film.”

Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce on behalf of Amblin Television.

Dead Star, and other Hr Giger film projects we never got to see
Image
Alien artist Hr Giger was involved in a number of film projects in the 1980s and 90s. We talk to filmmaker William Malone about some amazing films that never happened.

Given just how genre-defining 1979’s Alien was, it’s perhaps surprising that Hr Giger, the Swiss artist who designed the title monster, wasn’t involved in more films. His creations appeared in the likes of Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Species (1995), plus a little-seen German indie comedy horror called Killer Condoms (1996), but none were as high-profile or influential as Alien.

In the wake of that genre-defining space horror, other artists and designers tinkered with Giger’s unforgettable xenomorph in its sequels. Giger wasn’t involved in the making of Aliens, Alien Resurrection or subsequent prequels or spin-offs, and his work for Alien 3 was barely used. Instead, Giger had the curious habit of coming up with concepts and artwork for...

7 Horror Villains Who Are Secretly Terrible At Killing Their Victims
Image
Not all horror villains are successful murderers; some like Ghostface from Scream and Annabelle relied on others for their kills. Mister Babadook and Lubdan the Leprechaun were terrifying but ultimately terrible at actually killing their intended victims. The Beast from Poltergeist failed to capitalize on opportunities to kill, making them more of a menacing presence than an effective killer.

Horror villains have kept audiences on the edge of their seats and fearing for their lives, but some were simply terrible at actually killing their victims. The best horror movies have introduced all kinds of villains to audiences, from the intelligent and sneaky to the brutally violent. These titles became known as the slasher film subgenre, focused explicitly on gruesome deaths, and became a hugely popular subgenre. As unhinged scenes of extreme violence and torture played out on the silver screen, several characters lost their lives at the hands of some...

Eleanor Coppola, Emmy-Winning Director of ‘Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse,’ Dies at 87
Image
Eleanor Coppola, the matriarch of a Hollywood dynasty who won an Emmy for directing the documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse and helmed her first narrative feature at age 80, died Friday. She was 87.

Coppola died at her home in Rutherford, California, her family said in a statement to the Associated Press.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, five-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, 85; their daughter, Sofia Coppola, the director, producer and Oscar-winning screenwriter; and their son, Roman Coppola, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter.

Her oldest child, actor Gian-Carlo Coppola, died in 1986 at age 22 in a speedboat accident.

Eleanor Coppola often went on location with Francis, and during the making of his Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now (1979), she was in the Philippines to shoot footage with a 16mm camera and conduct interviews, material that supposedly was to be used by the United Artists publicity department.

It would all be seen in Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse.

Poltergeist 2's Villain Is So Scary Because The Actor Was Dying
Image
Poltergeist 2's Reverend Kane, played by Julian Beck, is an iconic horror villain despite Beck's battle with stomach cancer during filming. Beck's health condition added to the eerie appearance of Reverend Kane, making him even more terrifying on screen. Julian Beck passed away before post-production was completed, leading to some of his lines being re-recorded by a sound-alike. His death contributed to the "Poltergeist Curse" surrounding the franchise.

1986 sequel Poltergeist 2's villain, the terrifying Reverend Kane, is a horror icon, but actor Julian Beck barely made it through production alive. The first Poltergeist, directed by Tobe Hooper and released in 1982, is a horror classic, managing to scare audiences while only being rated PG. At the time, the PG-13 rating didn't exist. In 1986, Poltergeist's Freeling Family — minus older daughter Dana, as actress Dominique Dunne had been tragically murdered in the intervening years — returned for another ghostly adventure. Few...

Poltergeist A.I. Fan Poster is an 80s Neon Nightmare
Image
A new fan-made poster for the horror classic Poltergeist reimagines the film as a neon nightmare, deviating from the original black-and-white design. Despite being made over 40 years ago, Poltergeist still unnerves audiences with its horrifying haunting and ahead-of-its-time special effects. Efforts to revive the Poltergeist franchise have been ongoing, with a failed remake in 2015 and now a potential TV series in the works following Amazon's acquisition of MGM.

The 1982 horror classic Poltergeist is still considered one of the scariest movies ever released with a PG-13 certificate. However, a new A.I. generated fan-poster has reimagined the classic Tobe Hooper film as a neon nightmare that is probably more frightening than anything that befalls the Freeling family.

The poster, shared by @nckss_82 on Instagram, deviates significantly from the original Poltergeist poster to create something that screams “modern sensibilities” over subtlty. The classic poster's iconic black-and-white image of central character Carol Anne,...

Poltergeist Gets Colorful & Creepy Poster That Highlights The 80s Aesthetic
Image
A new AI-generated poster for the movie Poltergeist has been created, featuring vibrant colors and the classic demon. The poster captures the neon color aesthetic of the 1980s, immersing viewers in the time period of the film. Poltergeist remains one of the most classic horror films out of the 1980s, and is currently being developed into a TV series from Amazon and MGM.

Poltergeist receives a creepy poster update in new AI-generated art. Written by Steven Spielberg, the original Poltergeist was released in 1982 and was directed by Tobe Hooper. The film stars JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Heather O’Rourke, and unveils the story of the Freeling family as their home is haunted by a series of demonic ghosts.

Now, an AI-generated poster gives an updated look to Poltergeist. From @nckss_82 on Instagram, the Poltergeist poster is replete with vibrant colors. The poster shows the creepy demon lording over the Freeling house.

The Poltergeist Movies Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
"They're here."

With those two words, the nebulous world of the supernatural, the ominous ambiguity of the paranormal, and the deep-seated terror that is inherent in the concept of ghosts were perfectly summed up by 1982's "Poltergeist." Despite the film being over 40 years old, it still holds up as one of the most modern movies about the paranormal ever made. Sure, there had been films about ghosts and hauntings before, but many of these tended to be set in remote, antiquated locations such as spooky old mansions and abandoned homes on a hill. More than even the well-regarded visual effects, the biggest innovation of "Poltergeist" is its quintessentially American suburban setting, the inherent message being that ghosts aren't merely sequestered in places that average people would never dare go; instead, they exist right next to us.

Released during the busy summer of '82, "Poltergeist" more than held its own, making $121.7 million over a $10.7 million budget.

The Twilight Zone's 'Disastrous' Videotape Episodes Led To Two Separate Lawsuits
Image
Within the lore surrounding Rod Serling's original "The Twilight Zone," which ran from 1959-1964 on CBS, the six episodes videotaped (as opposed to shot on film) during the second season are generally regarded by both fans and creators to be some of the series' biggest failures. These episodes are rivaled in reputation only by the shortened season of hour-long episodes (as opposed to the series' usual half-hour length) during the show's 4th year.

In both cases, these changes were mandated by the network, and were not internal decisions made by Serling or his crew. However, while the 4th season hour-length episodes suffered more from script and pacing issues, the videotaped second season episodes are by and large solid "Twilight Zone" scripts; it's the technical side of things that suffered instead, as CBS tried to cut the show's production costs.

The fact that these episodes were still pretty great sci-fi...

Cailee Spaeny
Alien: Romulus will take place between Alien and Aliens
Cailee Spaeny
Actor Cailee Spaeny has confirmed that the events of Alien: Romulus will unfold between those of 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens.

When it was announced last year that Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez would be heading up a new movie in the Alien franchise, the line was that its story (co-written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues) would be unconnected to the previous films.

That’s likely still true, but we now at least know when the plot of Alien: Romulus will take place – between the events of 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens. Rumours of this timeline placement have been floating around for a few months now, but actor Cailee Spaeny, who has a currently undisclosed role in Romulus, recently confirmed this to Variety's Michaela Zee.

“It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie,” Spaeny said. “They brought the same team from Aliens, the James Cameron film.

"They're Here!" As this year's spooky season comes to a close, a scary movie from the past might be getting the television treatment. It appears that a series version of the hit horror film Poltergeist is in early development at Amazon MGM Studios.

Per Variety, a writer has yet to be attached to the project but Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce the series on behalf of Amblin Television. This will keep the series in the Amblin family as Amblin Entertainment produced the 1982 original film. Steven Spielberg came up with the story for Poltergeist and co-wrote the film alongside Michael Grais and Mark Victor. Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, helmed the project.

Steven Spielberg or Tobe Hooper - Who Really Directed Poltergeist? This Will Be the Second Poltergeist Series

‘Poltergeist’ TV Series Now in Early Development from Amazon and MGM
Image
We are nearly ten years removed from the most recent installment in the Poltergeist franchise, with the Gil Kenan-directed remake released back in 2015. That film failed to make a splash of any kind, coming along in the wake of two sequels and a TV series.

So what’s going on with the Poltergeist franchise? Amazon, you may recall, recently acquired MGM, and it looks like Amazon is soon bringing the classic horror franchise back to life.

Variety reports this afternoon that a Poltergeist television series is in early development at Amazon MGM Studios. There is no further information on their plans at this time, however.

Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce on behalf of Amblin Television.

The original horror classic, Poltergeist was released in 1982, directed by Tobe Hooper and co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg. JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and the late Heather O’Rourke starred as...

Why One Pet Sematary: Bloodlines Change Was So Important To The Stephen King Prequel Director
Image
Director Lindsey Anderson Beer explains the major story change in Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. The new prequel movie emphasizes the inclusion of Indigenous characters to subvert the mystical Indigenous trope. Beer wanted to show that the dark force in Pet Sematary is not the burden of the Indigenous characters Donna and Manny.

One major story change in Pet Sematary: Bloodlines has been explained by director and co-writer Lindsey Anderson Beer. The movie, which is now streaming on Paramount+, is a prequel to 2019's Pet Sematary, an adaptation of the Stephen King story of the same name, which follows a family that moves to a property in Ludlow, Maine that lies next to a mysterious pet cemetery that brings the dead back to life. The new movie follows their neighbor Jud Crandall (Jackson White) in his younger years when he first discovers the terrible secret of Ludlow's pet cemetery.

Virus (1999) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The Virus episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Adam Walton, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

The ’90s are chock full of some great sci-fi horror films. Who can forget Event Horizon, The Lawnmower Man, Mimic or Deep Blue Sea…. ya know, the one where Samuel L. Jackson gets eaten by a shark? Anyways, let’s fast forward to the end of the decade, 1999 in particular. It was, and still is, considered to be the best year movies were released. In January, director John Bruno would bring us the film, Virus (watch it Here). A movie that makes us ask the question “Wtf Happened To This Horror Movie?”

Back in 1992, writer Chuck Pfarrer and Canadian artist Howard Cobb brought to life the comic series Virus. The story revolves around a group of...

Heather O'Rourke in Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)
After taking on Poltergeist II last week (watch the episode Here) The Arrow in the Head Show is now going in depth on the good, bad and tragic of the 1988 Poltergeist 3 (see embed above). It was the last Poltergeist entry… until that useless remake that nobody remembers surfaced in 2015.

Written/Directed by Gary Sherman Poltergeist III tells the tale of: Carol Anne is staying with her aunt in a high-rise building, where the supernatural forces haunting her make their return.

The film stars Tom Skerritt, Tom Skerritt’s mustache, Nancy Allen, Heather O’Rourke, Zelda Rubinstein and Lara Flynn Boyle.

The Arrow in the Head Show goes to the other side with Poltergeist II
Tobe Hooper
A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are talking about Poltergeist – but not the Tobe Hooper / Steven Spielberg classic from 1982. The Poltergeist movie they’re focusing on in this episode is the 1986 sequel Poltergeist II: The Other Side (watch it Here), the one with the creepy reverend and the tequila worm. To find out what they had to say about it, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by Brian Gibson from a screenplay written by Michael Grais and Mark Victor, Poltergeist II has the following synopsis: The Freelings have escaped their haunted house, which is now being studied by paranormal investigators, including shaman Taylor. When Taylor realizes that the Beast, masquerading as the Reverend Kane, knows where young Carol Anne Freeling now lives, he goes to warn the family that...

A member of the Hollywood Stuntmen’s Hall of Fame, George P. Wilbur is most known to horror fans for playing Michael Myers in both Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers.

Is the Poltergeist Movie Franchise Cursed? The Myth, Explained
Image
From "Halloween" to "A Nightmare on Elm Street," there's no shortage of iconic horror movies from the '70s and '80s that launched long-running franchises. Still, "Poltergeist" stands out among the rest because of its cult following - and many of those fans believe the Poltergeist franchise is actually cursed.

A reboot of the classic 1982 horror film "Poltergeist" came out in 2015, but let's be honest: nothing could compare to the original. While no horrific accidents occurred on the set of the most recent movie, there are plenty of rumors of a curse on the original film trilogy's cast.

The movie revolves around a suburban family who moves into a new home and begins to notice strange things involving their 5-year-old daughter, Carol Ann. Turns out, menacing spirits are haunting the house, and while their interactions seem harmless at first, their true evil nature is soon revealed when Carol Ann goes missing,...

‘In Search of Darkness: Part III’ Conjures Up a 5-Hour Feast for Horror Fans
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Filmmaker David Weiner has a rather sunny disposition, but he’s spent the last few years in search of darkness.

The documentarian and veteran entertainment journalist is putting the final touches on In Search of Darkness: Part III, the concluding chapter in a trilogy of documentaries that explores the horror films of the 1980s (both the obscure and the classic).

The In Search of Darkness films, as well as Weiner’s sci-fi focused In Search of Tomorrow, have gained a small but dedicated fanbase, which has contributed to the funding of the films.

“We’re making this directly for the superfans who are in from the very beginning, helping define our trajectory,” Weiner tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Weiner never imagined he’d make a third installment of In Search of Darkness. After all, the previous two each topped four hours, so what more...

36 Years Ago, ‘Top Gun’ Was a Surprise Hit — and a Major Game-Changer
Image
Today marks the 36th anniversary of the domestic opening of “Top Gun,” which zipped into theaters way back in 1986. Though the high-flying Tom Cruise-starring actioner is well-known now, its history and how unlikely its box office success was at the time of its release are less so.

Cruise returns for “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount), which opens on May 27 for a splashy Memorial Day weekend, and already has great initial reaction and early reviews, buzz almost unheard of for a wide mainstream release. That’s already one point of difference between the long-awaited sequel and the not well-reviewed first film: in 1986, when Tony Scott’s film debuted and ultimately defied expectations about what was expected — or even possible — in a blockbuster.

Its potential barriers are fewer this time. Still, there are some: mainly surrounding how much interest today’s prime audience, whose parents and even grandparents were the ones who...

Reitman was born in Czechoslovakia and was a Canadian. Either because of that or despite it, he became best known for his work in comedies. He directed such laff riots as Meatballs, Stripes, Ghostbusters, Twins and Kindergarten Cop while producing funny films like Animal House and Private Parts.

For 1984’s Ghostbusters Reitman double-dipped, serving as director and producer. Everyone knows by now that Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis were the spirit chasers of the title. The suits were squeamish about the film’s multi-million dollar budget – they didn’t think the public would buy the story. They were wrong. And wrong again. And again. And again. Ghostbusters 2021 was directed by Ivan’s son,...

Heather O'Rourke in Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)
Happy 30th anniversary to 1992’s Class of Horror Movies! Still early into a decade often ranked the worst for the genre, the year’s theatrical output strongly favored sequels to beloved ’80s favorites. But 1992 also delivered an all-time classic, a massive-scaled period epic that took home the highest-grossing horror prize for the year, plenty of […]

‘F9’ Review: A Less Furious Sequel Coasts Along on a Family Plot, as Vin Diesel and John Cena Play Battling Toretto Brothers
Image
It leaked out a while back that the new “Fast and Furious” film, “F9,” would feature a sequence set in space — a setting that sounded, on paper, like it might be the logical culmination of all those spectacular gravity-defying leaps that the cars in this series are perpetually making. Yet I’m not sure if anyone will be prepared for what happens at the climax of “F9.”

Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), who’ve been quibbling all through the movie, are behind the wheel of a red Pontiac Fiero that’s been outfitted with a rocket launcher. The car is hitched to the back of a space shuttle, which is preparing to send them into orbit; as they fumble around with makeshift yellow space helmets that look like they belong on a pair of 1960s aquanauts (all that’s missing is the rear-projection fakery), the sequence turns into pure cheeseball comedy.

Fried Barry Review
Image
You can’t help but have high hopes for a film called Fried Barry so thankfully expectations have been massively exceeded. Writer/director Ryan Kruger extends his 2017 short of the same name into a phenomenal mind-f**k masterpiece that transcends nano-budget B movie trappings.

The script doesn’t let up as we’re swiftly introduced to Barry (brilliantly played by Gary Green), a perpetually frazzled, financially struggling, drug addled dad/scumbag, who looks like a hybrid of Lee Van Cleef, Julian Beck (Kane from Poltergeist 2) and Dieter Laser from The Human Centipede films.

After walking out on his wife and young son, Barry goes pub, gets tousled on heroin and is then either possessed by extra-terrestrials or has the type of frighteningly heightened hallucination that would suggest he’s been cajoled onto a toad licking frenzy by a psycho Shaman from Mars.

We’re then swiftly booted face first into Barry’s odyssey,...

Will Zack Snyder Be Invited to Make a ‘Justice League’ Sequel? The Answer Is a Test of Whether Hollywood Still Works (Column)
Image
For 45 years, Hollywood has churned out sequels to more or less any movie that makes a big enough splash at the box office. The rationale has always been simple: The fans want it. Starting in the mid-’70s, with “Jaws” and “Rocky” and “Star Wars,” fan service became the model, the engine, the economic blueprint of the movie business. Yet it was a double-edged sword.

The idea that the fans who made a movie into a blockbuster would line up, once again, for a movie with a Roman numeral after its title that was essentially the same movie, but just different enough to count as the new-and-improved version, turned out to be a spectacularly successful strategy. Creatively, though, it was mostly a bust. For every sequel you could name that satisfied expectations, or even (on rare occasions) surpassed them, there were seven others that were going through the motions. I remember back in the ’80s,...

Alien (1979)
Topps’ Fright Flicks Cards: Where Horror and Comedy Collide
Alien (1979)
This story is presented by:

In 1988, the Topps Company – creators of trading cards dedicated to everything from Major League Baseball to Garbage Pail Kids – released one of the most ambitious lines ever to hit the non-sport market: Fright Flicks. Each pack included nine cards that featured images from horror movies like Alien, Aliens, A Nightmare on Elm Street 1-3, An American Werewolf in London, Fright Night, Pumpkinhead, Ghostbusters, Poltergeist and Poltergeist II, The Fly, Predator, and Day of the Dead. Also featured in each pack was one sticker and a piece of the company’s infamous bubble gum.

To be clear, Topps had a storied history of creating cards that catered to monster kids, having already released Alien and Jaws 2 lines. In 1973, their Creature Feature line showcased black and white images from classic horror films paired with comedic captions to enhance the modern fun. A second line followed in 1980, but...

Fantasia 2020 Review: The Dark And The Wicked is a Shockingly Bleak and Horrifying Exploration of Grief and Faith
Image
As someone who has enjoyed all of Bryan Bertino’s directorial output over the years, with The Strangers being one of my favorite modern horrors of all-time, The Dark and the Wicked might just be Bertino’s greatest cinematic achievement to date. A masterful exploration of grief and faith that often ratchets up the tension to unimaginable levels, The Dark and the Wicked is one of the most confidently crafted horror films of 2020, and is easily one of the best that this year has to offer as well. It takes a lot for a film to crawl right up under my skin, but The Dark and the Wicked did it with minimal effort, and it left me shaken and unsettled by the time the credits rolled around.

At the start of the film, a pair of siblings – Louise (Marin Ireland) and Michael (Michael Abbott Jr.) – return home to the family farm,...

Oliver Robins, who most genre fans will know from the first two Poltergeist movies where he’d played Robbie Freeling, steps both infront and behind the camera for Celebrity Crush – a genre film which brings us an interesting look at not only the cult of celebrity but also the rabid fanbase horror cinema has… taken to extremes of course! Remember folks, this is Just a movie.

Celebrity Crush tells the story of Jonathan Blaklee who, as a child, appeared in 80s slasher movie Chain-Face Clown. A slasher that has gone on to be deemed a classic of the genre.
