Although with no connections to the novel, this episode basically works as a TV-adoption of executive producer Michael Mann's movie Manhunter released two months earlier, with the story, photography and acting borrowing heavily from that in the movie, with Don Johnson mirroring profiler Will Graham and Vincent Caristi the psychotic killer Dollarhyde.
The Crime scene in the skit is a bedroom with a dead couple. The detective solves crime thinking like the murderer, same as Graham. He also calls the murderer a ''bastard'' in his monologue.
