'Ferris Bueller' Stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck Finally Reunite for New Comedy
Image
Ferris Bueller and Cameron Frye are about to have another day off. Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck, on-screen high-school best pals in the classic teen comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off, are set to reunite on the big screen. The duo are in talks to star in The Best Is Yet to Come, a new comedy from Lionsgate. Deadline reports that the film is a remake of a French comedy of the same name.

Broderick and Ruck will star as a pair of lifelong best friends; after a tragicomic misunderstanding, one of them comes to believe that the other only has months to live. The two embark on a road trip (hopefully not in a borrowed 1961 Ferrari Gt) to find the "dying" man's long-estranged son, and to rediscover life along the way. ‘Ferris Bueller’s Matthew Broderick & Alan Ruck Reunite In ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’
Image
Exclusive: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck are negotiating to reunite in The Best Is Yet to Come, a comedy that Allan Loeb scripted and Jon Turteltaub will direct. The film is backed by MRC, and Lionsgate is in talks to distribute. It is based on the French film of the same title.

Amy Baer is producing through her Gidden Media banner, and the executive producer is Dimitri Rassam, who produced the 2019 original through his company Chapter 2. Loeb also will be an EP.

The last time Broderick and Ruck held the screen together, the latter played the disillusioned son of a wealthy man, a dad who seemed to prize his 1961 Ferrari 250 Gt California Spyder more than his son. That led the kid to launch the classic car out a glass window, a dilemma even his best pal Ferris (Broderick) is hard pressed to fix. Here,...

Joey D. Vieira, Young Actor on ‘Lassie,’ Dies at 80
Image
Joey D. Vieira, who portrayed the farm boy Sylvester “Porky” Brockway on the first four seasons of the long-running CBS series Lassie, has died. He was 80.

Vieira died Monday — the day before his birthday — in hospice care, his Lassie co-star Jon Provost announced on Facebook.

Viera also appeared in some notable films, among them Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), Red Heat (1988) and The Patriot (2000).

Billed as Donald Keeler — his aunt was Ruby Keeler, who starred in Warner Bros. musicals — Vieira appeared on 91 episodes of Lassie from 1954-57. At the start, the show revolved around the Miller family — Tommy Rettig as Jeff, Jan Clayton as his mom, Ellen, and George Cleveland as Gramps — living on a farm with their collie.

Quite often, Porky, who also had a dog, a basset hound named Pokey, was seen wearing a beanie and huffing and puffing, trying to keep...

Americans Turn to ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ for Some Foreboding Education on Tariffs
Image
Does anyone know what happens when a country slaps massive tariffs on the rest of the world all at once? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Yesterday, President Donald Trump officially launched his world trade war as the White House announced sweeping tariffs on our every international trading partner in a move that confounded and frightened economists from across the political spectrum. While history has repeatedly shown that such aggressive taxing on imported goods both fails to fix a country’s economic woes and provokes retaliatory action from foreign governments that worsens recessions and depressions alike, Trump is poised to prove hundreds of years of precedent and the entire worldwide economics community wrong, even if that group includes Ben Stein.

Apparently, neither Trump nor his supporters are big John Hughes fans, as they may have been able to avoid the impending and fast-moving financial crisis if they had just stopped and looked...

Steve Martin’s 1987 Comedy With 93% on Rotten Tomatoes Is the Best Road Trip Movie of All Time
Image
Buddy comedies have been a staple of Hollywood entertainment for quite some time. The formula typically features a straight character who is all business and a funny character who is as quirky as they are outrageous. Comedic duos like Laurel and Hardy in The Flying Deuces pioneered the straightforward formula for comedic entertainment, but this formula has continued to evolve. The buddy duo has expanded into other genres, one of which is the road trip movie.

A road trip comedy provides hilarious opportunities for any buddy duo. With the characters already at odds with one another, the situations that arise from their tension are further amplified by the added long road trip with no escape for either one. One film that brilliantly elevates the buddy comedy within a road trip comedy is Planes, Trains and Automobiles. This film is a refreshing departure from previous John Hughes films while packing even more heart.

Matthew Broderick movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Matthew Broderick is a true star of stage, screen and television who first came to moviegoers' attention over four decades ago in the thriller "WarGames." He then triumphed in comedies, dramas and musicals both on stage and in film. Add to that his long-term marriage to Sarah Jessica Parker, and there's a lot for him to celebrate.

For his stage work, Broderick has won two Tony Awards (as Best Featured Actor for 1983's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and as Best Actor for the 1995 revival of the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"), as well as an additional Best Actor nom for 2001's "The Producers" for a performance that he brought to the screen in the 2005 film. In 1993, he was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his supporting performance in "A Life in the Theatre." And for his film work, Broderick earned a Golden Globe nomination for 1986's "Ferris Bueller's Day Off,...

The First Live-Action Harley Quinn Was Played By A Twin Peaks Star In A Forgotten TV Pilot
Image
The Batman villain Harley Quinn made her debut on the "Batman: The Animated Series" episodes "Joker's Favor", where she was voiced by actress Arleen Sorkin. The character was envisioned as a clown-like moll for the Joker, and was given a ditzy personality and a broad Noo Yawk accent. She proved to be so popular that she was eventually incorporated into Batman comic books, and soon grew to have titles of her own. Over the years, Harley Quinn has appeared in multiple TV shows and movies, most recently played in live-action by Lady Gaga in "Joker: Folie à Deux."

Fun trivia: Harley Quinn was actually preceded by a very, very similar character called Prank (Corinne Bohrer), a clown-like moll to a very Joker-like villain named the Trickster (Mark Hamill) on a 1991 episode of "The Flash." Whether or not the makers of "Batman: The Animated Series" were aware of Prank is a matter of speculation.

‘Olmo’ Director Fernando Eimbcke on How Plan B-Produced Film Finds Laughter in Mexican-American Family Strife
Image
At one point in Fernando Eimbcke’s “Olmo” two adolescents are let into a party. Now, this isn’t the party the titular character and his trusty best pal are looking for, but the drinks are flowing, the mood is light and the music sounds good all the same. They decide to stick around – until they turn a corner to find a dead body given pride of place in the middle of the room.

This so-called party is a wake – and the Berlin audience was in stitches.

“Mexicans have a very particular relationship to mortality,” says Eimbcke, who sought to channel that very sensibility into his work. “Humor is the most human way to approach difficult situations — it’s dignifying. And that [light touch] was extremely important for a film that deals with serious themes.”

That instinct acted as a guiding light for the director and his co-writer Vanesa Garnica as they...

John Hughes movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
John Hughes was the patron saint of adolescents who found great success with a series of hit comedies, most of them centering around the plight of teenagers. Yet how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films as both a writer and director, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1950, Hughes first came to the attention of Hollywood as a writer after penning “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Mr. Mom” (1983). That financially successful one-two punch landed him his first directing gig: “Sixteen Candles” (1984). A tender coming-of-age story about a teenage girl (Molly Ringwald) suffering one indignity after another on her sweet sixteen firmly established him as the premiere helmer of adolescent comedies, leading to “The Breakfast Club” (1985), “Weird Science” (1985), and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986).

Yet Hughes also excelled at entertainments outside the classroom, including the road trip farce “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” (1987), starring...

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Has the Worst MCU Post-Credits Scene Ever
Image
There’s one thing that Marvel used to do better than any other studio, and that’s build hype. Ever since the series debuted with Jon Favreau’s “Iron Man” in 2008, these superhero films were filled with promising easter eggs and, in a game-changing creative masterstroke, post-credits scenes that promised future characters and crossovers and villains, which Marvel then actually delivered.

Now, Marvel has made its worst MCU post-credits scene ever with the tag for “Captain America: Brave New World.”

Marvel didn’t invent the post-credits scene — so-called because they drop after the closing credits (sometimes spiked with a mid-credits scene as well or instead) — nor did they make the first good one. The first, according to most historians, came at the end of the 1966 spy comedy “The Silencers,” starring Rat Pack crooner Dean Martin as Matt Helm. The scene depicted Helm on a bed, either pre-or-post-orgy, with a cadre of scantily clad,...

‘Pretty in Pink’ Comes to 4K Uhd
Image
Andrew McCarthy‘s recent documentary “Brats,” about his time as a teen idol in the 1980s alongside peers like Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy, charted the actor’s path from irritation and outright hostility toward the “brat pack” label to grudging affection, as he recognized that the movies he looked down on while he was doing them — films like “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “Less Than Zero,” and “Mannequin” — meant more to an entire generation of filmgoers than more “serious” prestige fare like “The Falcon and the Snowman” ever could.

The danger for those of us who grew up on the movies is that the trajectory will be reversed — that films that seemed meaningful to our teenage eyes aren’t really all that great when viewed outside the lens of indulgent childhood nostalgia. Yet revisiting one of McCarthy’s most popular films via a new 4K Uhd release...

Adam J. Graves’ Oscar Short ‘Anuja’ Is a Powerful Portrait of Sisterhood & Resilience in Delhi’s Garment Industry
Image
The second 2025 Oscar nominated short available to stream for Netflix’s vast audience alongside The Only Girl in the Orchestra, live action short Anuja from Adam J. Graves is a Delhi set coming of age tale with a narrative crafted to advocate as much as entertain. The story of the titular gifted 9-year-old orphan and her older sister, who like many are forced into work for the cheap conveniences we enjoy, Graves manages to highlight the unacceptable exploitation of their situation while also offering us moments of joy. Despite the victimisation they experience in the sweatshop, the sisters’ bond and resilience fortify them to do everything in their power to make the best of dire circumstances and when the youngest – played by a real life resident of a home for girls echoing her character’s situation – is offered a life-changing opportunity, a beacon of hope emerges from the gloom. 7 Movies You Should Watch to Feel Better When You’re Sick
Image
Nobody likes being sick but it’s often an excuse to visit – or revisit – some comfort movies.

Movies are a special kind of medicine when people are struck horizontal by a cold. Whether it’s a long epic to distract you from the aches and chills, or a comedy that will have you laughing through the coughs, binging movies while you are unwell is the only perk of getting sick.

These are seven of the best movies to queue up the next time you are feeling less than stellar.

Paramount Pictures Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is the quintessential sick day movie. What better way to distract yourself from feeling unwell than watching someone fake being sick so he can have one of the best days of his life. Whether it’s the constant out-foxing of Principal Rooney, destroying Cameron’s dad’s car, or stealing the show at a full-on parade,...

John Hughes' Final Film Was This Overlooked 16-Year-Old Owen Wilson Comedy
Image
Quick Links John Hughes Left a Profound Impact On American Comedy Films Drillbit Taylor Was One of the Funniest Yet Most Overlooked Comedies of the 2000s Why Wasn't John Hughes' Name Attached To Drillbit Taylor?

Best known for writing and even directing such classics as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Home Alone, and The Breakfast Club, John Hughes established an impressive legacy as one of the most influential screenwriters and filmmakers of his era. His final film, however, was one that not many knew that he was involved in. While he's credited under a pseudonym, given the plot and setting of the film, it certainly sounds like something he would have come up with. Starring Owen Wilson, 2008's Drillbit Taylor carries the sort of quirky plot and characters that would normally be found in one of Hughes' works, but comes across more like a product of Judd Apatow. It may not...

Despite Its Flaws, Chris Evans’s Panned First Movie is 1 of the Best Comedies of the 2000s
Image
Chris Evans is one of the most charming actors of his generation. He can seemingly do it all, from cult action like Snowpiercer to starring as a scene-stealing supporting cast member in movies like Knives Out and The Gray Man. These films are excellent and have their own dedicated fan bases, but without a doubt, Evans is best known for starring as Captain America in nine MCU movies to date.

Before Chris Evans donned the star-spangled shield as Steve Rogers, he made his movie debut in an underappreciated comedy called Not Another Teen Movie. This parody film spoofs 2000s teen movies such as She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, Never Been Kissed, Bring It On, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, American Beauty, The Breakfast Club, and Cruel Intentions. Evans stars as Jake Wyler, a pretty boy jock who makes a bet with his friends that he can transform...

Before Friends, Jennifer Aniston Was In A Television Flop Based On An '80s Classic
Image
Jennifer Aniston would become one of NBC's biggest stars as Rachel Green on "Friends," but the path to fame isn't always smooth. One of her bumps along the way (besides starring in the ridiculous horror comedy "Leprechaun"), was her role in a television adaptation of John Hughes' '80s classic "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Aniston was perfect for the role of Jeannie, Ferris' sister, taking over from Jennifer Grey, who played that character in the film. Aniston's low, deadpan voice, pouty mouth, and sighs of exasperation perfectly captured Jeannie's sourpuss attitude and frustration with Ferris' antics — namely his uncanny ability to charm everyone he comes across and his nimble ways of wriggling out of trouble. She's a great fit for the role, but the television show itself? Well, it's not so great. It's bizarre, even.

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off," the best John Hughes film ever made, focuses on the...

In February, the Golden Globe-nominated actress-turned-filmmaker told Deadline she’s “been looking for years for the right story to tell” as a director, and she’s finally found it with an adaptation of Renee Carlino’s best-selling novel of the same name.

Here’s the official synopsis for Wish You Were Here courtesy of Lionsgate:

“Julia Stiles makes her directorial debut in a brilliantly warm and romantic film based on the bestselling novel, Wish You Were Here. Isabelle Fuhrman, Mena Massoud, Jennifer Grey and Kelsey Grammer star in a...

'Home Alone' and Its Sequel 'Home Alone 2' Take Over Disney+
Image
Is it really Christmas until you've heard those words uttered: "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals!"? The Christmas classic Home Alone and its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, are now #2 and #4, respectively, on Disney+'s Top 10 list. In addition to all six Home Alone films, fans will find no shortage of Christmas selections on Disney+, such as The Polar Express, Mickey and the Very Many Christmases, The Santa Clause, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Fred Claus, Christmas with the Kranks, and Jingle All the Way.

In 2023, during the unveiling of Macaulay Culkin's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Catherine O'Hara said that the love audiences have for Home Alone is a direct result of Culkin's work. "Home Alone was, is, and always will be a beloved global sensation," she said during the ceremony (via Newsweek). "The reason families all over the world can't let a year go...

The Classic '80s Movie That Jack Nicholson Despised
Image
Jack Nicholson had an undeniably impressive film career. From the outside looking in at least, he seemed to be riding high from his breakout role in 1969's "Easy Rider" all the way to 2007's "The Bucket List," before gracefully retiring from Hollywood in recent years. But although Nicholson would still be landing great roles deep into the 2000s, he was already starting to feel too old in 1986. In an '86 interview with the New York Times, Nicholson talked about how he watched "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Although this is arguably director John Hughes' best movie, Nicholson hated every moment of it.

"That movie made me feel totally irrelevant to anything that any audience could want, and 119 years old" Nicholson explained. ''Believe me, everyone else watching it liked it. And you know, I literally walked out of there thinking my days are numbered. These people are trying to kill me."

Sean Penn's Wildly Fun 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' Is on Netflix
Image
Sean Penn's career has seen the actor take on a myriad of diverse roles. From his dramatic appearances in films such as Dead Man Walking and The Thin Red Line to the often maligned Shanghai Surprise, in which he starred alongside Madonna. Penn's career is certainly notable, and one of his most entertaining roles also happens to be one of his first, that of Jeff Spicoli in the 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Fans of Penn's body of work and the coming-of-age teen comedies that permeated the 1980s have a chance to catch his performance as it's currently streaming on Netflix.

The many teenage-oriented dramas and comedies that were prominent in the 1980s, such as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and others, can be looked at in one of two ways. The optimist might see them as being full of interesting and enjoyable characters who are...

With 'The Life of Chuck,' Mike Flanagan takes a detour from the macabre to explore one of Stephen King’s alternate sensibilities in an adaptation that carries the spirit of his most optimistic work...

10 Most Underrated Indie Movies of the '80s, Ranked
Image
From John Hughes teen classics to one-of-a-kind science fiction adventures, the 1980s had something for everyone. The '80s in film might be most notable for the domination of the summer blockbuster, which began in the previous decade with Jaws. Action stars were made from scratch and introduced to audiences all over the world, from Schwarzenegger to Van Damme to Stallone. The John Hughes revolution continued in full force, with The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Sixteen Candles sweeping audiences young and old off their feet. Most importantly, however, independent cinema continued to deliver absolute gems for the truest of movie lovers. While these films might've failed to resonate with audiences, critics, or the box office at the time, they still absolutely deserve their flowers.

If fans search long and hard, unsung movies can be found in every corner of the industry. Independent cinema is a hit parade,...

35 Years Ago, A Timeless Christmas Classic Was Born At The Box Office
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

There are plenty of classic Christmas movies out there. The likes of "It's a Wonderful Life" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" have been staples of the holiday season for decades (and they're likely to remain so for decades more to come). Being in the annual Christmas movie business is good business. Just look at what Hallmark cranks out every year around the winter holidays. But the real money is in making that one movie that winds up in the rotation annually, becoming part of the larger cultural conversation surrounding Christmas.

In 1989, Warner Bros. released the third installment in the "Vacation" franchise following National Lampoon's "Vacation" in 1983 and "European Vacation" in 1985. Wisely, with this third entry, the property went the Christmas route...

‘Sweethearts’ Director Told Kiernan Shipka and Gen Z Cast to Flag Anything That Was Too ‘Millennial Cringe’
Image
This story includes spoilers about the Max original “Sweethearts.”

First-time director Jordan Weiss and partner Dan Brier wanted to write a coming-of-age comedy based on their own male-female friendship.

The two best friends first met at a young writers group, but “Sweethearts,” their Max original movie, is the first project the two have actually written together.

“It grew out of a road trip that we went on in 2019, where we were just driving across the country,” Brier said. “Because we met fresh out of college, there were a lot of stories and people and worlds that we didn’t know about each other’s past.”

From there, the characters and the world of “Sweethearts” was born. Weiss told TheWrap that Jamie and her lack of female friendships was a lot like herself as a freshman in college, and Brier said that the leads’ relationship mirrors much of his own relationship...

Image
The recently resurrected Anchor Bay Entertainment will release a trio of new indie horror films on Blu-ray and DVD on December 10: Crust, Cursed in Baja, and Abruptio.

Character actor Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) makes his feature directorial debut on Crust, an offbeat horror-comedy about a sock monster that he co-wrote with Jim Wald.

Whalen stars with Daniel Roebuck (Terrifier 3), Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), and Ricky Dean Logan (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare).

In Crust, “Vegas Winters is a former child star who owns a laundromat. Why Tom Cruise Regrets Starring In Ridley Scott's 1985 Dark Fantasy Epic Legend
Image
By the time 1983 was over, Tom Cruise was ready to conquer the world. Thanks to his roles in "The Outsiders" and "All the Right Moves," the man who would one day swing around the tallest building in the world in "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" (giving his then flailing career new life) had established himself as one of the most promising actors of his generation. That same year, by dancing in nothing but a pink button-up shirt and his tighty-whities in "Risky Business," he also provided the world with one of the most iconic visuals in teen coming-of-age dramedy history. Yet, it would take another three years for both Tom Cruise the blockbuster star with a mega-watt grin and the serious artist to fully emerge with "Top Gun" and "The Color of Money." Why the delay?

In a word: "Legend." Director Ridley Scott's 1985 fantasy adventure is as visually wondrous...

Bob Yerkes Dies: ‘Star Wars’ & ‘Back to the Future’ Stuntman Was 92
Image
Bob Yerkes, the Hollywood stunt performer known for his work in the Star Wars and Back to the Future franchises, has died. He was 92.

The former acrobat died Tuesday morning at his Northridge, California home, according to a statement shared by his fellow stunt performer Darlene Williams Bostock, who grew up training with Yerkes.

“I am horribly sad to hear that my mentor and stunt coach Bob Yerkes passed away this morning in Northridge, California,” announced Bostock in a Facebook post. “Bobby opened the door to his home and backyard to everyone that either needed a place to stay or to train for a job. … I would not have had a career in stunts without Bob Yerkes.”

She added in part, “There will never be another Bob Yerkes! My heart is broken. I am proud and honored to have known him. He was a true legend!”

Born Feb. 11, 1932 in Los Angeles County,...

Bob Yerkes, Circus Trainer and ‘Back to the Future,’ ‘Remo Williams’ Stuntman, Dies at 92
Image
Bob Yerkes, the acrobatic stunt performer who slid down a clock tower cable for Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future and hung around the Statue of Liberty under repair for Fred Ward in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, has died. He was 92.

Yerkes died Tuesday of natural causes in Northridge, Darlene Ava Williams, a stunt performer and one of his many mentees, announced.

The amiable Yerkes, who started out in the circus and was a skilled trapeze aerialist and tightrope walker, also plummeted from a helicopter through a roof in Breakout (1975), starring Charles Bronson.

“I was getting ready for the stunt and the guy said, ‘Break a Leg!,” and I broke them both,” he recalled in a 2017 interview. He said he also broke legs while working on Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and Her Alibi (1989), but, in a career that spanned eight decades, that was the extent of his serious injuries.

See John Hughes Unforgettable 80s Classic Before It Leaves Netflix
Image
John Hughes was such a prolific writer and director of the teen coming-of-age story that he singlehandedly created a subgenre of the romantic comedy. By either writing or directing huge 1980s hits like Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Some Kind of Wonderful, he redefined what being a teenager in cinema looked like. However, the seminal 1985 classic The Breakfast Club is his magnum opus because of the much larger issues it addresses. The five main characters are flagbearers of different niches of teenagers going through the trials and tribulations of adolescence and high school.

How Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Cheekily Sidesteps Controversial Original Star Jeffrey Jones
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."

Those who revisited Tim Burton's original 1988 "Beetlejuice" before seeing the long-gestating sequel (or who have that first movie ingrained in their movie-watching DNA) may have noticed that, amid the return of familiar faces like Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, a few main actors are largely absent from the follow-up.

As the trailer for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" reveals, the film sees the Deetz family reunited for the funeral of patriarch Charles Deetz, played by "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" actor Jeffrey Jones in the original movie. As we learn in a flashback that features exaggerated stop-motion puppetry, Charles died on a bird-watching vacation overseas when his plane went down in the ocean and he was eaten by a shark. Throughout the movie, we see glimpses of Charles wandering around the afterlife, his entire upper body missing after being chewed off by the shark. In keeping...

A Tribute to John Hughes and His Impact on Cinema: How His Iconic Filmography Defined the 80s and Beyond
Image
Words cannot describe the impact John Hughes has had on Cinema. His movies have impacted a generation of teenagers and fledgling filmmakers. How many times have you seen ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ being played on TV, or heard “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” from ‘The Breakfast Club’ on any 80s radio station? He defined the 1980s and 90s, and his teen comedies are still analyzed and discussed today. He also brought many actors that we now know and love into stardom, as many of the child and teen actors in his films became pop-culture icons. Without him, the coming-of-age drama would be drastically different, and with that, let’s take a look into how important Hughes was to American Cinema.

Breaking the Teenage Stereotype One of the most defining and most charming aspects of Hughes’ films is his focus on young people and their personal growth. In real life,...

Why Big Trouble In Little China's Marketing Campaign Left Kurt Russell Disappointed
Image
John Carpenter's 1986 action-comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is an odd duck. The plot involves an ancient wizard named Lo Pan (James Hong) who aims to kidnap, marry, and then sacrifice a green-eyed woman to break a curse he is under. The woman in question is Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), the fiancée of Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), who, fortunately, knows a little bit about evil wizards and ancient Chinese warriors. It will be up to Wang to rescue Miao Yin from Lo Pan. Also kidnapped is the green-eyed Gracie (Kim Cattrall), beloved by the dumb-as-rocks blowhard Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), essentially Wang's sidekick.

The gag of the movie is that Jack doesn't really seem to understand that he's a sidekick, and behaves like the action hero. Indeed, the whole movie seems to be a martial arts movie told from the perspective of the American guest star. Russell was featured...

‘Red Dawn’ 40th anniversary: Remembering the first-ever movie to receive a ‘PG-13’ rating
Image
During the summer of 1984, parental outrage over the unexpected gore and graphic violence in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “Gremlins” led to a ratings change by the Motion Picture Association of America. Encouraged by Steven Spielberg, director of “Temple of Doom” and producer of “Gremlins,” on July 1, 1984, the MPAA introduced the “PG-13” rating, indicating that “parents are strongly cautioned to give special guidance to children under 13.” A few weeks later, on August 10, 1984, “Red Dawn” became the first American film released with the new rating. Although it got mixed reviews upon its debut, it has become a cult classic both for featuring a group of young actors who went on to become some of the biggest stars of the decade, and for its themes that are reminders of the real fear Americans felt over the Cold War. Read on for more about the “Red Dawn” 40th anniversary.

Ferris Bueller Spinoff - Producers, Director And More Info
Image
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is one of the best teen movies of all time, but it also (perhaps purposely) tells its story from a very privileged point-of-view. I adore the John Hughes classic, yet the last few times I've watched it, I've been struck by how terribly Ferris (Matthew Broderick) treats the customer service workers he meets throughout the film. It's all a part of his schtick; to craft the perfect day off, he has to get access to all sorts of fun stuff, and the quickest way to do that is by putting on a haughty, rich-white guy persona that he probably learned from his dad.

It may be blasphemous to even consider adding a new layer to a perfect Hughes-made story, but if someone's going to do it, it may as well be a filmmaker who's interested in approaching the material from a truly fresh angle. Enter: "Sam and Victor's Day Off,...
