“This is my last dance,” she told The New York Times.
Kathy was actually ready to retire before Matlock came around, after a movie shoot turned sour for her. She really gave her all for the role, and it went underappreciated, so the next day, she called her agents and told them she wanted to retire.
However, a few weeks later and her agents sent her the script for Matlock and it moved her so much that she decided to pause those plans.

After five decades in Hollywood, Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress Kathy Bates says she is ready to yell cut. The esteemed performer will put away her scripts following CBS’ reboot of Matlock, premiering Sept. 22 and later dropping on Paramount+.
“This is my last dance,” she told the New York Times simply in a new interview published Sunday.
In fact, Bates revealed that she was ready to retire earlier, after a film shoot had soured for her (she did not specify the production) late last year. However, in January 2024, her agents sent her the script for the procedural, the premise of which — a reimagining on the classic legal TV drama, featuring a septuagenarian righting wrongs — intrigued the actress as a person who has faced injustice earlier in her career, she said.

When Kathy Bates read the script for “Matlock” in January she wasn’t exactly interested in the role, she told the New York Times in an interview published Sunday. She was ready to retire, but the script paused those plans — though not for good. Bates revealed that once the show is finished, so is she. “This will be my final dance,” the actress told the outlet.
The CBS series has, perhaps surprisingly, become an outlet for what she has left to release. “Everything I’ve prayed for, worked for, clawed my way up for, I am suddenly able to be asked to use all of it,” she explained. “And it’s exhausting.”
Bates seems to be an actor who is incredibly aware of what she feels and how deeply she feels it. When she and writer Alexis Soloski met for dinner, the actress said, “Pain, pain, pain, pain, pain. Do...

CBS sure does love its spinoffs — but what about the team behind the network’s newest hit series, Tracker?
It was midway through Season 1 of the Justin Hartley procedural that the show introduced Blood & Treasure vet (and Hartley’s real-life spouse) Sofia Pernas as fellow reward seeker Billie Matalon. Six weeks later, Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles made his debut as Colter’s brother Russell, an Army vet who works cases as a civilian contractor for a shadowy organization called The Horizon Group. The new Matlock, originally set for a 2023 bow, will finally premiere this fall, but the hype is already building. The original Matlock was a long-running network TV series in the 1980s and 1990s. It starred TV legend Andy Griffith as attorney Ben Matlock.
Debuting in 1986 on NBC, Matlock remained on that network until 1992, when it moved to ABC, where it remained until it wrapped up in 1995.
Matlock was a popular legal procedural created by Dean Hargrove, who was also behind the original Perry Mason.

Ben Matlock was a defense attorney who often proved his clients innocent, usually in dramatic courtroom moments.
Since early 2023, a reboot of Matlock has been in the works, not on the original show’s networks but on CBS.
The other big change is that the Matlock character in this version is a woman, played by Kathy Bates.

It’s finally that time of year when we can get excited for the fall television schedule to begin! However, one network in particular will be short on premieres for September 2024: CBS. Instead of every one of their new and returning shows coming back during the regular schedule, a good majority of them are premiering in October. So which five shows are premiering in September?
Even though a majority of the shows coming in September are not the standard procedural or comedy shows, we will still have a dose of reality among the returning and new players. In addition, we will get to see a sneak peek of a new series, Kathy Bates’ Matlock, after the airing of CBS football on Sunday, Sept. 22.
If you are into news and investigative series, then you will be able to mark your calendars for two of the best-known shows, 48 Hours and 60 Minutes.

Elsbeth stands out because it is one of the only lighthearted mysteries on television, but it never used to be that way.
These types of mysteries were extremely popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis: Murder, and Matlock were all top-rated shows, and that trend continued into the early 2000s when Monk and Psych captivated viewers.
Modern television is more likely to feature realistic, gritty police procedurals than lighthearted mysteries, but Elsbeth’s success suggests the tide could be turning back again.

Norm Macdonald and David Spade had overlapping tenures on Saturday Night Live, with Macdonald starting in 1993 and Spade heading for other pastures in 1996. But the two remained connected over the years, performing together on Adam Sandler’s “Here Comes the Funny” tour and somehow ending up on the same talk show panels several times before Macdonald’s untimely death in 2021. Whether they were talking to Larry King, Dennis Miller or Conan O’Brien, the two comics loved to rip one another to pieces, as seen in a new YouTube compilation uploaded to the I’m Not Norm channel. Here are some of the funniest burns from the two comics’s talk show appearances over the years.

Lots of people in Mayberry had a motive for wanting to kill Barney Fife. He was always throwing Ernest T. Bass in the pokey for throwing rocks. Otis the town drunk couldn’t have a couple of cocktails without Barney cuffing him. Maybe Thelma Lou finally had it with the deputy’s two-timing ways with Juanita over at the diner. But the actual person who posed the biggest threat to Don Knotts, the comedian who played Barney, was none other than Andy Griffith himself.

The procedural, which premieres on Sunday, Sept. 22 before settling into its regular Thursday slot on Oct. 10, stars Kathy Bates into the titular role. The actress has said that "This isn't your grandfather's Matlock" in a tongue-and-cheek acknowledgement that the series isn't a retread of the beloved Andy Griffith program. The CBS drama even makes reference to the TV show as a wink to the legacy it's stepping into.
But Bates' Madeline "Matty" Matlock isn't a popular attorney, she's actually getting back in the game after leaving it in the '90s. That makes our heroine an underdog who is already being discounted because of her age. She, however, is going to prove her worth by using people's assumptions about her against them. While speaking to Carrie Preston, in a social media play by the network dubbed "Conversations Between Stars," Bates teased that...

Over the course of a screen acting career that stretched across fifty years, Charles Cyphers racked up 100 credits, but he’s best known for his collaborations with John Carpenter, having appeared in the director’s Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, Someone’s Watching Me!, Elvis, The Fog, and Escape from New York. His most popular character was Sheriff Leigh Brackett from the 1978 Halloween, a role he reprised in 1981’s Halloween II and, after a forty year absence from the Halloween franchise, 2021’s Halloween Kills. Sadly, we’ve lost this great character actor, as Variety reports that Cyphers has passed away “from a brief illness” at the age of 85.
Cyphers’ manager Chris Roe confirmed his passing to Variety and provided the following statement: “Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and...

Crafty seventy-something attorney Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Academy Award winner Kathy Bates) has an ulterior motive for bulldozing her way into a job at an esteemed Chicago law firm in this reimagining of legal drama Matlock. In 1955, on the stage of Broadway’s Alvin Theater, Andy Griffith and Don Knotts first bonded as they co-starred in the stage production of “No Times for Sergeants,” cementing a friendship that continued when they were both asked to reprise their stage roles in the 1958 Mervyn LeRoy film. Years later, when Knotts happened to learn about a TV project starring Griffith as a small town sheriff, he called up his old friend and asked “Don’t you think Sheriff Andy Taylor ought to have a deputy?” Griffith loved the idea, and television history was made.
Thanks to Knotts’ impeccable comic skills, Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife became one of television’s most beloved characters, an peacekeeper with loads of insecurities which he tries to cover up with a show of bravado that is both hilarious and endearing. His brilliant comic performance earned Knotts five consecutive Emmy Awards, which was unmatched at the time.

The classic TV show “Matlock” is coming back to screens next year – but with a twist. Kathy Bates will take on the lead role as a lady lawyer named Madeline “Matty” Matlock in CBS’s reimagined version of the legal drama.
Matty is joining a prestigious law firm later in life, looking to prove that experience counts just as much as youth. As a woman in her 70s, she’ll show viewers that older people still have a lot to offer. “I wanted to write a character who challenges ageism,” says producer Jennie Snyder Urman.
Bates, who is 76 herself, thinks Matty’s role is long overdue. “You never see women my age as the lead on TV,” she points out. Her character will have depth, taking on complex cases and corrupt bosses week after week.

What started out as a fun accessory now represents so much more for the title character on Elsbeth.
While talking with reporters Saturday at the Television Critics Tour, Carrie Preston explained why her quirky character Elsbeth Tascioni carries not one, but three bags at any one time on her CBS drama.
For the uninitiated, Elsbeth’s penchant for portable storage began on The Good Wife, which was the idea of then Executive Producer Brooke Kennedy.
“She needs to always be carrying a bunch of things. We got very specific about what those bags were,” Preston explained. “She won’t carry a briefcase. She doesn’t think of herself in that way. They became a fun accessory. She has bags in her brain, she has Rolodexes in her brain. She’s picking out little things that she put there 20 years ago, and she’s like ‘I can use that here.'...

If the 1950s and '60s were the golden age of the television sitcom, the 1970s were its in-the-pocket prime. And when risk-averse TV execs saw the astronomical ratings of hit sitcoms like "All in the Family," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and "M*A*S*H," they exploited this ratings-rich phenomenon by diving into the same-but-different world of spinoffs.
Norman Lear's "All in the Family" was the '70s spinoff king with seven total offshoots, but James L. Brooks and Allan Burns' "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" proved plenty durable by spawning "Rhoda," "Phyllis," and "Lou Grant." Of these, "Rhoda" was by far the biggest hit. Valerie Harper's four seasons as Mary Richards' lovably vivacious neighbor more than confirmed she could carry a series of her own. So, Brooks and Allan sent Rhoda back to her hometown of New York City, where she immediately found love (her...

When it comes to police procedurals, whether on the ground or in the courtroom, audiences can usually count on the series staying on for much longer than most other genres.
However, NCIS seems to be an immortal juggernaut that is only gaining more steam with every season it earns and every spinoff it gains, primarily due to fans who can't get enough of its stories and characters.
And, sure, the series has had its fair share of cast and character shake-ups, but that is to be expected after over two decades of a successful broadcast run.
