Kathy Bates Reveals Plans to Retire, Says 'Matlock' Reboot Will Be Her 'Last Dance'
Image
Kathy Bates is headed back to television for her last acting project!

The 76-year-old actress will be starring in the upcoming Matlock reboot series for CBS and it will mark her first TV series since American Horror Story: Apocolypse (season eight) in 2018.

In a new interview, Kathy said the new show will be her last, after spending the last 54 years in film and television!

Keep reading to find out more…

“This is my last dance,” she told The New York Times.

Kathy was actually ready to retire before Matlock came around, after a movie shoot turned sour for her. She really gave her all for the role, and it went underappreciated, so the next day, she called her agents and told them she wanted to retire.

However, a few weeks later and her agents sent her the script for Matlock and it moved her so much that she decided to pause those plans.

Kathy Bates Says She Will Retire After Starring in CBS Series Matlock
Image
Kathy Bates has been a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood for over five decades, but the Oscar winner has now decided that the curtain must come down on her phenomenal career. Bates is set to lead Matlock on CBS, a reboot of the classic legal TV drama, but the actress has now called the upcoming series my last dance.

Matlock is an 18-episode series based on the 80s show which starred Andy Griffith as the titular attorney. The new series will reimagine the classic show, with Bates playing the role of Matlock, who returns to her old law firm that she found great success at during her younger years. According to Bates, Matlock is the singular reason why she has not already retired from the industry, which then makes it easy to see why she is not planning on looking for any more work once this journey comes to an end.

'My Last Dance': Kathy Bates Is Retiring After Matlock Reboot
Image
Kathy Bates is ready for retirement, but not without putting in one last performance on the small screen. She's the star of the upcoming Matlock series reboot at CBS, but once the show ends, fans will never see her in another acting role again.

Per the New York Times, Bates confirmed her plans to retire once the new Matlock ends its run. She explained how she was planning to retire before the role had even been presented after an unnamed movie she was working on "soured" how she felt about the current state of show business. It even got to the point where she told her agents she was retiring. A few weeks after this call, Bates' agents still sent her the script for the Matlock reboot, and it intrigued her enough to take on the project for her final role.

Kathy Bates Says She Will Retire After Matlock: ‘This Is My Last Dance’

Kathy Bates Says She Will Retire After CBS’ ‘Matlock’: “This Is My Last Dance”
Image
After five decades in Hollywood, Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress Kathy Bates says she is ready to yell cut. The esteemed performer will put away her scripts following CBS’ reboot of Matlock, premiering Sept. 22 and later dropping on Paramount+.

“This is my last dance,” she told the New York Times simply in a new interview published Sunday.

In fact, Bates revealed that she was ready to retire earlier, after a film shoot had soured for her (she did not specify the production) late last year. However, in January 2024, her agents sent her the script for the procedural, the premise of which — a reimagining on the classic legal TV drama, featuring a septuagenarian righting wrongs — intrigued the actress as a person who has faced injustice earlier in her career, she said.

“Everything I’ve prayed for, worked for, clawed my way up for, I am suddenly able to be asked to use all of it,...

Kathy Bates Says ‘Matlock’ Will Be Her Last Role Before Retiring: ‘My Final Dance’
Image
When Kathy Bates read the script for “Matlock” in January she wasn’t exactly interested in the role, she told the New York Times in an interview published Sunday. She was ready to retire, but the script paused those plans — though not for good. Bates revealed that once the show is finished, so is she. “This will be my final dance,” the actress told the outlet.

The CBS series has, perhaps surprisingly, become an outlet for what she has left to release. “Everything I’ve prayed for, worked for, clawed my way up for, I am suddenly able to be asked to use all of it,” she explained. “And it’s exhausting.”

Bates seems to be an actor who is incredibly aware of what she feels and how deeply she feels it. When she and writer Alexis Soloski met for dinner, the actress said, “Pain, pain, pain, pain, pain. Do...

Why the Tracker Team Isn’t Thinking About Spinoffs (Yet)
Image
CBS sure does love its spinoffs — but what about the team behind the network’s newest hit series, Tracker?

It was midway through Season 1 of the Justin Hartley procedural that the show introduced Blood & Treasure vet (and Hartley’s real-life spouse) Sofia Pernas as fellow reward seeker Billie Matalon. Six weeks later, Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles made his debut as Colter’s brother Russell, an Army vet who works cases as a civilian contractor for a shadowy organization called The Horizon Group. Either guest star would seem well-suited to lead a second show set in the Tracker Televisual Universe, but...

Why CBS Canceled So Help Me Todd After Just 2 Seasons
Image
CBS' fun legal sitcom So Help Me Todd was canceled after just two seasons, leading fans to wonder why. The show starred Skylar Astin as the titular Todd, and Marcia Gay Harden as Margaret, Todd's mother and a high-powered attorney. Todd is bright but a slacker, and he reluctantly agrees to work at his mother's law firm as an in-house private investigator. Thanks to the premise, So Help Me Todd earned praise for being just as much a family drama as it was a legal comedy.

Unfortunately, So Help Me Todd season 3 won't be happening as CBS pulled the plug on the well-received show after just two seasons. The news, announced in April, came as a shock to fans, who didn't expect So Help Me Todd to be canceled so soon or at all. It's all the more disappointing as the reason given for the cancellation is incredibly flimsy, even...

Matlock Cast & Character Guide
Image
The Matlock cast of characters includes a captivating group of actors capable of reviving Andy Griffith's 1980s and '90s legal courtroom drama, one of the best procedural TV shows ever. Griffith's series utilized his folksy exterior to mask his sharp legal mind, and Bates' reboot will adopt the same premise. Kathy Bates will star in the series as Madeline "Matty" Matlock, a retired lawyer who returns to practicing law to support her family. Bates has held leading roles in TV series like Netflix's stoner comedy Disjointed and NBC's Harry's Law, but the Matlock reboot is remarkable.

Kathy Bates said she "had one foot out the door," believing she could land something like Matlock at her age in a Conversations Between Stars interview with CBS ahead of the Matlock series premiere. In that way, the septuagenarian identifies with a significant theme of the Matlock reboot: that...

Decades after the beloved original went off the air, CBS is reviving Matlock with an all-new cast of familiar stars, and there are a ton of exciting updates about the upcoming reboot. Debuting in 1986, the original series followed lawyer Ben Matlock as he used his folksy wisdom to solve cases as they went to trial. Known for Andy Griffith's towering performance and its exciting courtroom scenes, Matlock helped set the stage for many of the procedurals that followed throughout the '90s and 2000s.

Running for a total of nine seasons, Matlock was not only a hit on its own but spawned a slew of successful spinoffs, like Diagnosis Murder and Father Dowling Mysteries. After the original series went...

Kathy Bates' Matlock Reboot Has Already Recast An Original Character Before It Even Premieres
Image
Kathy Bates' Matlock reboot has an exciting premise, but before its premiere, the show has already replaced an original cast member. CBS announced early in 2023 that Andy Griffith's Matlock series would come to CBS in reboot form, with Bates as the leading lawyer in a gender-swapped role. The original Matlock series ran on NBC from 1986 to 1992 and then on ABC until 1995. CBS will give the series a new face, with the reboot exploring the same wolf-in-sheep-clothing premise that the first Matlock tackled, with Ben Matlock's folksy exterior masking his fierce legal skills.

The Matlock reboot will put Bates where Griffith once stood. It will explore how Bates' character, Madeline "Matty" Matlock, uses being an older woman in modern society to her advantage. The series will subvert the harsh reality of older adults feeling invisible in society, with the Kathy Bates Matlock trailer showing Madeline Matlock using her invisibility to scheme legal wins.

Matlock Starring Kathy Bates Gets A New Trailer 16 Months After Its First One
Image
A new trailer for Matlock starring Kathy Bates has been released 16 months after the previous one, revealing an early premiere date for the series' first episode. The reboot was announced in January 2023 before being given a full series order in May of that same year. That same month, the show's first trailer came out. However, due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, the upcoming Matlock reboot was delayed. CBS later revealed it would have a place on their 2024-25 primetime schedule.

Now, CBS has released a new trailer for Matlock starring Kathy Bates, the first glimpse at the series in 16 months. The trailer reveals the original Matlock to be a TV series within the reboot's universe, with Bates' Madeline "Matty" Matlock using her age to make herself seem less capable than she is. Matlock Season 1: Trailer, Premiere Date, and Everything We Know So Far
Image
The original Matlock was a long-running network TV series in the 1980s and 1990s. It starred TV legend Andy Griffith as attorney Ben Matlock.

Debuting in 1986 on NBC, Matlock remained on that network until 1992, when it moved to ABC, where it remained until it wrapped up in 1995.

Matlock was a popular legal procedural created by Dean Hargrove, who was also behind the original Perry Mason.

(Courtesy of CBS Studios)

Ben Matlock was a defense attorney who often proved his clients innocent, usually in dramatic courtroom moments.

Since early 2023, a reboot of Matlock has been in the works, not on the original show’s networks but on CBS.

The other big change is that the Matlock character in this version is a woman, played by Kathy Bates.

Could Shows Like Elsbeth Signal A Return To Lighthearted Mysteries?
Image
Elsbeth stands out because it is one of the only lighthearted mysteries on television, but it never used to be that way.

These types of mysteries were extremely popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis: Murder, and Matlock were all top-rated shows, and that trend continued into the early 2000s when Monk and Psych captivated viewers.

Modern television is more likely to feature realistic, gritty police procedurals than lighthearted mysteries, but Elsbeth’s success suggests the tide could be turning back again.

Norm Macdonald and David Spade Loved to Burn Each Other on Talk Shows

Norm Macdonald and David Spade had overlapping tenures on Saturday Night Live, with Macdonald starting in 1993 and Spade heading for other pastures in 1996. But the two remained connected over the years, performing together on Adam Sandler’s “Here Comes the Funny” tour and somehow ending up on the same talk show panels several times before Macdonald’s untimely death in 2021. Whether they were talking to Larry King, Dennis Miller or Conan O’Brien, the two comics loved to rip one another to pieces, as seen in a new YouTube compilation uploaded to the I’m Not Norm channel. Here are some of the funniest burns from the two comics’s talk show appearances over the years.

Andy Griffith Dreamed That He Killed Don Knotts
Image
Lots of people in Mayberry had a motive for wanting to kill Barney Fife. He was always throwing Ernest T. Bass in the pokey for throwing rocks. Otis the town drunk couldn’t have a couple of cocktails without Barney cuffing him. Maybe Thelma Lou finally had it with the deputy’s two-timing ways with Juanita over at the diner. But the actual person who posed the biggest threat to Don Knotts, the comedian who played Barney, was none other than Andy Griffith himself.

“I dreamed I killed Don Knotts,” Griffith once told the Sioux City Journal, as reported by MeTV, revealing an unconscious desire to throttle his wiry costar. The dream occurred while Griffith was filming his first project after The Andy Griffith Show — but Knotts remained on the actor’s mind. “I woke up the next morning, and my conscience was killing me,” Griffith remembered. “I called Don...

Kathy Bates is Matlock: Everything to know about the new CBS procedural
Image
The long awaited premiere of Matlock, starring Kathy Bates in the titular role, is almost here! The new CBS procedural was delayed due to the Hollywood strikes back in 2023 but now it has finally slid into the line-up. Bates has referred to her series as "not your grandfather's Matlock" which has left us intrigued on just how the show will walk a different path from its predecessor.

We got our first look at the program via its trailer which showcases Bates at her finest as she embodies Madeline "Matty" Matlock, a lawyer re-entering the field after decades of not practicing law. She lands a job at a prestigious law firm much to the chagrin of Olympia, a senior attorney with a thirst for justice who's described as a "rainmaker." Also unhappy about the turn of events is Sarah, an ambitious young associate who has been partnered with Matty along with the charismatic Billy,...

Kathy Bates teases Matlock will be a procedural with a twist
Image
Matlock is a highly anticipated release for CBS. The procedural, which premieres on Sunday, Sept. 22 before settling into its regular Thursday slot on Oct. 10, stars Kathy Bates into the titular role. The actress has said that "This isn't your grandfather's Matlock" in a tongue-and-cheek acknowledgement that the series isn't a retread of the beloved Andy Griffith program. The CBS drama even makes reference to the TV show as a wink to the legacy it's stepping into.

But Bates' Madeline "Matty" Matlock isn't a popular attorney, she's actually getting back in the game after leaving it in the '90s. That makes our heroine an underdog who is already being discounted because of her age. She, however, is going to prove her worth by using people's assumptions about her against them. While speaking to Carrie Preston, in a social media play by the network dubbed "Conversations Between Stars," Bates teased that...

R.I.P. Charles Cyphers: Sheriff Brackett from John Carpenter’s Halloween has passed away at 85
Image
Over the course of a screen acting career that stretched across fifty years, Charles Cyphers racked up 100 credits, but he’s best known for his collaborations with John Carpenter, having appeared in the director’s Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, Someone’s Watching Me!, Elvis, The Fog, and Escape from New York. His most popular character was Sheriff Leigh Brackett from the 1978 Halloween, a role he reprised in 1981’s Halloween II and, after a forty year absence from the Halloween franchise, 2021’s Halloween Kills. Sadly, we’ve lost this great character actor, as Variety reports that Cyphers has passed away “from a brief illness” at the age of 85.

Cyphers’ manager Chris Roe confirmed his passing to Variety and provided the following statement: “Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and...

Don Knotts 100th birthday: 12 best movies and TV shows, ranked [Photos]
Image
In 1955, on the stage of Broadway’s Alvin Theater, Andy Griffith and Don Knotts first bonded as they co-starred in the stage production of “No Times for Sergeants,” cementing a friendship that continued when they were both asked to reprise their stage roles in the 1958 Mervyn LeRoy film. Years later, when Knotts happened to learn about a TV project starring Griffith as a small town sheriff, he called up his old friend and asked “Don’t you think Sheriff Andy Taylor ought to have a deputy?” Griffith loved the idea, and television history was made.

Thanks to Knotts’ impeccable comic skills, Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife became one of television’s most beloved characters, an peacekeeper with loads of insecurities which he tries to cover up with a show of bravado that is both hilarious and endearing. His brilliant comic performance earned Knotts five consecutive Emmy Awards, which was unmatched at the time.

Kathy Bates Brings New Life to Matlock in CBS Reboot
Andy Griffith in Matlock (1986)
The classic TV show “Matlock” is coming back to screens next year – but with a twist. Kathy Bates will take on the lead role as a lady lawyer named Madeline “Matty” Matlock in CBS’s reimagined version of the legal drama.

Matty is joining a prestigious law firm later in life, looking to prove that experience counts just as much as youth. As a woman in her 70s, she’ll show viewers that older people still have a lot to offer. “I wanted to write a character who challenges ageism,” says producer Jennie Snyder Urman.

Bates, who is 76 herself, thinks Matty’s role is long overdue. “You never see women my age as the lead on TV,” she points out. Her character will have depth, taking on complex cases and corrupt bosses week after week.

Helping Matty in the courtroom is Olympia, played by Skye P. Marshall. Olympia is a senior attorney,...

‘Elsbeth’ Burning Question Answered: Why Carrie Preston’s Character Totes So Many Bags
Image
What started out as a fun accessory now represents so much more for the title character on Elsbeth.

While talking with reporters Saturday at the Television Critics Tour, Carrie Preston explained why her quirky character Elsbeth Tascioni carries not one, but three bags at any one time on her CBS drama.

For the uninitiated, Elsbeth’s penchant for portable storage began on The Good Wife, which was the idea of then Executive Producer Brooke Kennedy.

“She needs to always be carrying a bunch of things. We got very specific about what those bags were,” Preston explained. “She won’t carry a briefcase. She doesn’t think of herself in that way. They became a fun accessory. She has bags in her brain, she has Rolodexes in her brain. She’s picking out little things that she put there 20 years ago, and she’s like ‘I can use that here.'...
