Well, we now know exactly why The Toxic Avenger is being released unrated!
Macon Blair's remake of the low-budget Troma classic starring Game of Thrones alum Peter Dinklage debuted its first trailer back in October of 2023 before completely dropping off the radar. Fans had been wondering about the status of the movie ever since, and late last year, a report claimed that the gory splatter-fest - which has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes - had been deemed "unreleasable" and "not safe enough to market."
One distributor was willing to take a chance on Toxie, and Cinerverse and Bloody Disgusting recently announced that the movie will get a theatrical release later this year - but it will hit theaters unrated.
Now, we have a list of hilarious (and suitably gross) reasons why the movie has not been given an official rating, including ultra violence, toxic content, mutant nudity, splatter, monstercore,...

After a long search for a distributor, The Toxic Avenger — a remake of the 1984 cult classic — is coming to theaters this summer. The movie stars Game of Thrones veteran Peter Dinklage as a janitor who gets superpowers and mounts a revolting one-man war on crime. How revolting? The movie is not rated, but a warning label shared on the film's Twitter/X page states that we're in for "ultra violent/toxic content, piss play, mutant nudity, and gnarly theater fun."
Not only is The Toxic Avenger 92% rated on @RottenTomatoes, it’s going to theaters Unrated.

Despite fears that the film would need cuts to get an MPAA rating, the new Toxic Avenger heads into US cinemas without a rating at all.
Macon Blair – who made his directorial debut with the terrific, offbeat Netflix thriller I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore in 2017 – has followed up that project with a take on Toxic Avenger starring Peter Dinklage.
However, the film has been stuck in limbo for years now, seeking a buyer, with the film being seen as unreleasable in US cinemas due to its violence and erm, ‘other’ weirdness, putting off any potential purchasers.
In January of this year, though, Cineverse – the company behind the Terrifier films – purchased the film.
Given the success it’s had with the aforementioned Terrifier films, it’s clear that the studio knows exactly how to successfully sell an ultra-violent, offbeat B-movie to a niche audience. When the studio...

Fans have been waiting a long time to see writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), which wrapped filming way back in 2021 and unveiled a teaser trailer near the end of 2023, around the time it had its world premiere screening – but we won’t have to wait much longer. At the start of the year, it was announced that Cineverse had acquired the distribution rights with the intention of giving the film a wide release, and we’ve since learned that they’re aiming for an August 29th theatrical release. Three years ago, the Motion Picture Association ratings boards gave the film an R rating for “strong violence and gore, language throughout, sexual references and brief graphic nudity”… but never mind all that. The Toxic Avenger remake is being released unrated, and new promo images reveal exactly why it’s going out unrated.

If you don't know about the Long Island-based B-movie studio Troma, it's time you learned. Founded by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz in 1974, Troma began its life producing raunchy sex comedies like "The First Turn-On!," "Squeeze Play!," and "Waitress!" Kaufman and Herz would hit the big time in 1984 with the release of their film "The Toxic Avenger," which marked a turning point for the company. After the success of "Toxic Avenger," a twisted, low-budget superhero movie (with a soon-to-be-released remake!), the studio would skew more heavily toward horror-comedies, gore films, and splatstick humor. Troma would continue to make and/or distribute notable schlock staples for years, including "Class of Nuke 'Em High," "Surf Nazis Must Die," "Troma's War," "Rabid Grannies," "A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell," "Sgt. Kabukiman, NYPD," and the James Gunn-penned "Tromeo and Juliet," a riff on "Romeo & Juliet." They even distributed "Cannibal! The Musical," the...

The Toxic Avenger’s wild second teaser trailer: Peter Dinklage wields a green-glowing mop of justice

“Nobody special…Just some dude with A Mop!” That’s how the 2025 version of the Toxic Avenger describes himself in the new teaser trailer for the upcoming Peter Dinklage reboot. The second teaser trailer expands on the first, providing fans with plot details and even more wild action.
The Toxic Avenger’s second teaser trailer gives fans a taste of what to expect from the long-awaited, wild reboot, which has sat on a shelf since 2023. Legendary Pictures had difficulty securing a distributor due to the film's over-the-top gore until Cineverse stepped in to save the day by picking up the film for distribution, with support from Iconic Events Releasing. Hopefully, no one will get toxically cold feet before the scheduled August 29, 2025, release. The production team owes the Terrifier franchise some thanks for reviving unrated splatterfests in theaters again.

As most Troma fans know, The Toxic Avenger Part II and The Toxic Avenger Part III were originally written and shot as one movie, but directors Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz ended up with so much footage that they broke it up into two installments.
36 years years later, the filmmakers’ initial vision for the sequel has been reconstructed under its original title, Mr. Melvin.
Andrew L. Miller, Kaufman’s assistant, and Adam Peltier, star of Troma’s upcoming film The Power of Positive Murder, unearthed the original script and edited footage from the two films together as originally intended.
Toxie actor Ron Fazio provided some new voiceover for Mr. Melvin. He stars alongside Phoebe Legere, John Altamura, Rick Collins, John Altamura, Rikiya Yasuoka, and Lisa Gaye.
Clocking it at around two hours, the Mr. Melvin cut will premiere as part of Troma-Thon 2025 at the Mahoning Drive-In Theater in Lehighton, Pa...

A remake of the 1984 cult classic superhero flick The Toxic Avenger has been finished for a while, but only recently did someone pick it up to release in theaters. The reviews so far have been great, so it's anybody's guess why it took this long.
In any case, all is well now. In a new trailer, we see janitor Winston Gooze (Game of Thrones veteran Peter Dinklage) try to get his slimy boss (Kevin Bacon) to actually follow through on his obligations and actually treat the disease Winston picked up working at a chemical company. One thing leads to another, there's an accident involving toxic waste, and Winston becomes a deranged superhero who fights crime and rips off arms. Watch below:
Director Macon Blair seems to be channeling the gonzo spirit of the original Toxic Avenger movie. Will modern audiences connect with a movie that's so willfully chaotic? We'll find...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains mild spoilers about this season of “The Bondsman,” now available to stream on Prime Video.
The new series “The Bondsman” stars Kevin Bacon as Hub Halloran, a recently-murdered bondsman who is granted fresh life by Satan, as long as he uses his tracking skills to hunt down and kill demons who have escaped from the underworld. That’s a hell of a premise, but this show has much more on its mind than just monsters-of-the-week, diving deep into Hub’s relationship with his ex-wife and son and his love-hate relationship with the country music industry.
The surprises start at the top. At first, Bacon’s macho lead role seems like a run-of-the-mill badass: All one-liners, muscles and cool-guy poses. But that was only half of the appeal for the veteran actor.
“You see him right away kicking ass, right? But he’s also a man-child,...

Back in 1984, Troma Entertainment brought the world The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), a film about “the first superhero from New Jersey.” That film spawned a franchise, leading to The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989), The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989), Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000), a stage musical, and an animated series called Toxic Crusaders. For a long time, we’ve been hearing that Troma wanted to make a Toxic Avenger 5 – but instead doing that, they have loaned out the rights to Legendary Pictures, allowing them to make a remake of the original film that’s set to reach theatres on August 29th, courtesy of Cineverse. In anticipation of the film’s long-awaited release, we have put together a list of Everything We Know About the Toxic Avenger Remake… and here we go:

Anna Wintour announced today that the fourth annual Vogue World will take place in Hollywood on October 26 at the Paramount Pictures Studio Lot. Celebrating the “conversation between film and fashion,” 100% of the ticket proceeds will go to the Entertainment Community fund, with a focus on supporting costuming professionals impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires.
“Vogue World: Hollywood will be a one-night-only show with a huge cast of models and actors, dancers, musicians and surprises, and it will set great film costumes next to brilliant fashion collections,” said Wintour. “By mixing fashion with the arts and culture in the center of a city, and by raising funds for a cause, Vogue World has become a runway show-as-rallying cry, a way to fix the attention of a huge global audience, to bring awareness, and sound an unmistakable note of positivity, creativity, and hope.”

The Roses is a remake of War Of The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s arriving this very summer.
While we often roll our eyes at Hollywood’s lack of originality and continued reliance on remakes, we’re looking forward to Fox Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses.
It has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara, who imbued both of those films humour that ranged from slapstick to biting to outright shocking.
Also, this is an anglicised take on the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in a continuation of the love-hate onscreen pairing the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and its sequel, 1985’s The Jewel Of The Nile.

After years without a distributor, Peter Dinklage’s Toxic Avenger is finally coming out. And what’s more, we have a trailer to enjoy.
After a couple of years of uncertainty, Macon Blair’s adaptation of The Toxic Avenger is finally headed towards general release. Whilst the film did make a brief appearance back in 2023 with a teaser trailer, but the film is reportedly very violent – so violent in fact that it struggled to find a US distributor in 2023. We got a brief teaser for the film, and since then, nothing.
However, Blair is a talented director having helmed the Netflix thriller I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore to very positive notices. Likewise, the film’s star Peter Dinklage has raised the quality bar on many a project too, so hopes were always high that eventually somebody would swoop in to pick up the film for distribution...

2025 began with exciting news about the reboot of a 1984 cult classic that has been living in horror fans' minds rent-free since its release — and now it's finally coming to fruition. After premiering at Fantastic Fest in September 2023, The Toxic Avengerreboot, directed by Macon Blair, struggled to find a distributor that was down with the intense violence and gore of the wacky horror film. However, Cineverse, distributor of Terrifier 3, stepped up to gain the distribution rights in January 2025, with a now scheduled theatrical release of August 29. The New Jersey hero played by the legendary Peter Dinklage hadn't been seen in action since Fantastic Fest, until today that is.
A trailer for the upcoming horror comedy The Toxic Avenger has finally been released, and it's exactly what fans had hoped for: a film as zany as it is gory. Originating as a character in the low-budget Troma Entertainment film series, and then expanding into various media,...

The first teaser trailer for The Toxic Avenger remake was dropped way back in October 2023. Few updates followed that sneak peek, though reviews from various film festivals were largely positive.
Last year, we heard that director Macon Blair's movie - starring Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as the character - had been deemed "unreleasable." Things looked bleak, only for it to have since been revealed that an unrated cut will hit theaters later this year.
Entertainment Weekly (via FearHQ.com) has confirmed it's coming on August 29 and we also have a first look at the movie's titular Toxic Avenger. That's not Dinklage, though, as Luisa Guerreiro - an actor and movement artist - donned the extensive makeup and prosthetics for Toxie's physical performance.
Regardless, it's quite the transformation and Blair tells the site, "The goal was to try to stay true to the vibe of Lloyd's original Jennifer Aspinall/Mitch Cohen creature,...

After it was reported earlier this month that the long-awaited reboot of Troma Entertainment's cult classic The Toxic Avenger was finally getting the theatrical release it deserves in 2025, we now have a firm release date of August 29 in place. Directed by Macon Blair and starring Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Kevin Bacon, and Elija Wood, to name a few, the film was feared to languish in limbo forever until Cineverse swooped in and picked it up, rescuing it out of obscurity.
Per Deadline, The Toxic Avenger will open nationwide to kick off the Labor Day Weekend on Aug, 29, and the best part of all is that it will be an unrated version. Cineverse found success last year with Terrifier 3, which was also unrated, and went on to become one of the biggest horror hits of 2024, earning nearly $90 million at the box office against a budget of just $2 million dollars.

A while back, Game of Thrones veteran Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) filmed a movie called The Toxic Avenger, a reboot/remake/reimagining of a cult classic film of the same name from 1984, about a janitor who falls into a vat of toxic waste, gets superpowers, and gets revenge. The original movie was made by Troma, which specialized in glorious sleaze. The remake got great reviews from those who saw it, but for a while it felt like it was never going to actually get released into theaters, supposedly because distributors thought it was too niche.
Which is nuts, because obviously it's niche; that's the point of a movie like this. How are film studios going to find any new audiences if they never try releasing anything new? And yes, I know it's weird to call a remake of a 40-year-old movie "new"; I'm just frustrated.
Happily, Variety comes bearing good...

We have good news for Toxie fans, as the radioactive ranger will officially return to the big screen in 2025.
Macon Blair's remake of low-budget Troma classic The Toxic Avenger, starring Peter Dinklage in the lead role, debuted its first trailer back in October of 2023 before completely dropping off the radar.
Fans have been wondering about the status of the movie ever since, and earlier this year, a report claimed that the gory splatter-fest - which has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes - had been deemed "unreleasable" and "not safe enough to market."
Well, one distributor was willing to take a chance on Toxie, as Cinerverse and Bloody Disgusting have announced that the movie will get a theatrical release later this year.
Too gory? Unreleasable? Too outrageous for mainstream audiences?! Surprise! You asked for it, and now Cineverse will unleash Macon Blair's The Toxic Avenger remake in theaters - Unrated - this year.

Finished for years and seemingly in limbo, the new Toxic Avenger finally has a distributor: Cineverse, the company behind the Terrifier films.
It seems that at long last, the saga of Toxic Avenger may be coming to an end, and a happy one at that. Macon Blair – who made his directorial debut with the terrific, offbeat Netflix thriller I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore in 2017 – followed up that project with a take on Toxic Avenger starring Peter Dinklage.
If you’ve never caught the 1984 Troma movie, it centres around a janitor who’s accidentally exposed to toxic waste, gaining new powers in the process. If it sounds like B-movie oddness, that’s exactly what it was, although Blair’s take was reportedly very violent – so violent that it struggled to find a US distributor in 2023. We got a brief teaser for the film, and since then, nothing.
