- Rocky Dennis: [voiceover; a poem Rocky had written] These things are good: ice cream and cake, a ride on a Harley, seeing monkeys in the trees, the rain on my tongue, and the sun shining on my face. These things are a drag: dust in my hair, holes in my shoes, no money in my pocket, and the sun shining on my face.
- Rocky Dennis: [smashes some plates] I hate you going out every night and coming home wasted all the time!
- Rusty Dennis: It's none of your goddamn business!
- Rocky Dennis: You're my mother!
- Rusty Dennis: Well, you're not my warden!
- Rocky Dennis: Don't worry, Mr. Simms. I look weird, but otherwise I'm real normal. Everything'll be cool.
- Rocky Dennis: What's his problem, Ma?
- Rusty Dennis: Nothing. He's just another asshole. You let that negative dreck in and it'll put ya away. You can be a chickenshit and die or be a mensch and keep makin' yourself well.
- [after Rocky gave impressive speech on how the Trojan War started]
- Eric: That wasn't bad, Dennis. How about you tutor me?
- Rocky Dennis: Tutor you?
- Eric: Yeah. Cooley almost failed me last year.
- Rocky Dennis: Ok. But it will cost you $3 an hour.
- Eric: Three bucks?
- [classroom falls silent and looks back at the two because of the sudden outburst]
- Eric: [kinda tense] It's a deal.
- Rocky Dennis: Mom. Do I look like a freak to you?
- Rusty Dennis: No.
- Rocky Dennis: You know, your always been big on telling me when my face doesn't matter, but, it does. Doesn't it? You think that I can't even get a girl to like me unless you pay for her.
- Rusty Dennis: That's not true.
- Rocky Dennis: Bullshit!
- Rusty Dennis: Bullshit yourself. You know lots of young guys got problems getting girls. Well, what if I was your dad and I did the same thing?
- Rocky Dennis: I'd hate that too!
- Rocky Dennis: [Ben shows up at Rocky's house to tell him he's leaving for good to Michigan for a job with his dad he got applied to] Hey Ben, what's happening?
- Ben: Rocky, I gotta talk to you.
- Rocky Dennis: Ok. You want some cake?
- Ben: No.
- Rocky Dennis: You sure? My mom made it. It's actually pretty good.
- Ben: No thanks.
- Rocky Dennis: You want something to drink?
- Ben: Mmm-mmm.
- Rocky Dennis: Found a noose to hang yourself. What's the matter, Ben?
- Ben: I've been wanting to tell you this for a while.
- Rocky Dennis: Well, what?
- Ben: Rock... . I'm going back to my Dad's in Michigan. He got me a job there. It's great money.
- Rocky Dennis: When are you coming back?
- Ben: I'm not coming back.
- Rocky Dennis: What do you mean, Ben?
- Ben: I'll go nuts if I have to stay here. I mean, my mom, the school. So I quit. Look, I can work back there. I'll be making 7.50 an hour.
- Rocky Dennis: What about the trip?
- Ben: I'm sorry, Rocky. Look, you can keep the money.
- Rocky Dennis: I don't want the freaking money, Ben. I wanna go to Europe. What about our trip, huh? Huh? How can you do this, Ben? This is all we've talked about for a year.
- Ben: That's all you talked about!
- Rocky Dennis: That's BULLSHIT, man! You talked about it too and you know it!
- Ben: I didn't know that. I'm sorry. I didn't mean that.
- Rocky Dennis: You know what you mean, didn't you, Ben? You know why? Because you're stupid! You are so stupid, Ben!
- Rusty Dennis: Rocky!
- [Rocky slams the door and rips one of the cards he gave him]
- Rocky Dennis: Rube Walker, man! I call you a Rube Walker!
- Ben: [Sobs] Look, take it easy.
- Rocky Dennis: No more, Ben. No more taking it easy! I...
- Rusty Dennis: Rocky, stop it!
