For those of us who weren’t lucky enough to attend a Beatles concert in the 1960s, Ron Howard’s Eight Days a Week just might be the next best thing. The 2016 documentary traces the band’s rise from a cramped and dank cellar in Liverpool to record breaking television appearances, jam packed stadiums, and—ultimately—rock immortality. Lovingly assembled through rare and often unseen fan home movie footage, Howard’s film also draws on more familiar material—restored to the highest echelons of HD— and new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. All told, it’s a joyous...

With Venice, Tiff, and Telluride passed, the Oscar races become clearer. Not crystal clear mind you but apart from films no one has seen (like Spielberg's The Post or Scott's All the Money in the World) we know which dozen or so actresses might want to start thinking about red carpet lewks if the tide turns in their favor. Supporting Actress Chart Updates
Ronan and Metcalf in "Lady Bird"
One new intriguing possibility is Tony & Emmy winner Laurie Metcalf in Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird. If she's nominated could she complete her triple crown with an Oscar win?
And I know we've asked this before but is Octavia Spencer the Thelma Ritter of her generation? She sure is reliable at warming up a film and giving it some salt of the earth wisdom and comedy, too. Guillermo del Toro's romantic fantasy The Shape of Water could be looking...

Darlene Cates, best remembered as the actress who played Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s obese, housebound mother in the 1993 film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, died in her sleep on Sunday morning at age 69.
In 1994, the actress — whose weight at one point shot up to nearly 600 pounds — opened up to People about her longtime struggles with obesity and how overcoming her self-consciousness unexpectedly led to the launch of her Hollywood career.

Sally Jessy Raphael has some regrets about the way her long-running syndicated talk show, Sally, ended. Now 81, Raphael appears on Oprah Winfrey's show, Oprah: Where Are They Now?, and talks about how she would have changed the direction in which the show went prior to its 2002 cancellation. With other talk shows like Jerry Springer's and Maury Povich's coming up in the ratings due to their shock value, producers on Sally chose to cover those types of stories instead of hard news and human interest ones. "The last years of doing those Maury Povich/Jerry Spring shows? I hated them," she says. "I was betrayed by some of the producers into doing that. Come to think of it, I should have fought...

Sally Jessy Raphael spent nearly two decades on air as host of the syndicated talk show Sally. But the 81-year-old says she “hated” working on her show during its last years — and blames her producers to driving her into the tabloid subject matter so often associated with Maury Povich and Jerry Springer.
Raphael talked candidly in an exclusive clip from Saturday’s Oprah: Where Are They Now? about the end of her show — which was cancelled in 2002.
Raphael was the first female to host an audience-participation, issue-drive talk show — predating Oprah by nearly three years.

Anne Marie is tracking Judy Garland's career through musical numbers...
Believe it or not, 1946 actually represented a change of pace in Judy Garland's career. Judy only had three credits to her name that year: one starring role (The Harvey Girls), one cameo delayed by reshoots (Ziegfeld Follies), and one appearance in a biopic (Till The Clouds Roll By). In fact, this change of pace was a conscious choice on the part of Mr. & Mrs. Minnelli. If Judy looks like she's glowing a bit more than usual under those arclights, that's because Judy Garland was pregnant.
The Movie: Till The Clouds Roll By (1946)
The Songwriter: Jerome Kern (music), Buddy G. DeSylva (lyrics)
The Players: Judy Garland, Robert Walker, Van Heflin, June Allyson, Lucille Bremer, directed by Richard Whorf & Vincente Minnelli

That's one expensive ensemble worthy of a Chanel! Lea Michele wore the perfect fall outfit while attending Entertainment Weekly's EW Fest on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Scream Queens star, 29, paired a matching two-piece tuxedo suit by Sally Lapointe (Stretch Crepe Tuxedo Tank, $890, pencil skirt, $950) with a pair of luxe black python skin over-the-knee boots by Giuseppe Zanotti Designs ($2,025). Knowing that the audience for Fox’s upcoming Scream Queens will be impatient to find out whodunit, showrunner Ryan Murphy isn’t going to make viewers wait: He’s introducing the murderer in the series’ premiere. But, of course, there’s a catch.
Though fans will “definitely meet the killer” in the horror-comedy’s two-hour launch on Sept. 22, Murphy said at a joint American Horror Story/Scream Queens panel at Comic-Con on Sunday that they won’t realize at the time who it is. However, “if you go back and watch that episode at the end [of the season], I think it’s very clear.

Julie Harris, Liza Minnelli, Natasha Richardson, Michelle Williams. And now: Emma Stone.
The 26-year-old actress is the latest star to take on the famed role of Sally Bowles in Cabaret. On November 11, Stone made her Broadway debut replacing Williams, who kicked off the revival of the award-winning musical about the seedy nightlife of 1930s Berlin.

While many have only seen the first image of Stone as the British performer Sally, Playbill has an exclusive behind the scenes look at the show. In the video, the actress sings, dances, and struts her way into the hearts of theatre fans everywhere.

Emma Stone is keeping herself busy. Along with doing press for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), she is about to make her Broadway debut in the revival of Cabaret as Sally Bowles, alongside Tony winner Alan Cumming. This revival is a remounting of 1998 production which won four Tonys and ran for over 2,300 performances. Stone will be taking over the role from Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams, who also made her Broadway debut in the show. I had the great pleasure to see the show back in June. I was two days late on the Shia Labeouf arrest, unfortunately. Williams received a lot of criticism for her performance because she is not the greatest singer in the world. The thing is, Sally is supposed to be untalented. She is just conning everyone into thinking she is great. I think people get hung up on what Liza Minnelli did in...

It's a well-known fact that Liza Minnelli loves Cabaret. She starred in the Bob Fosse film adaptation of the musical in 1972, which won eight Oscars. And she was perhaps the most excited person in the world when she heard it was coming back to Broadway. As Bww previously reported, she remarked, 'The 1998 production of Cabaret, by Sam and Rob, is coming back to Broadway this month. With Alan And with no less than Michelle Williams, who's always so beautiful on the big screen, as Sally. Just like last time, Studio 54 will be turned into the Kit Kat Klub. And I will be there opening night.'...

The clear difficulty of identifying the definitive movie musicals is separating the musical itself from the film version. The Phantom of the Opera is, without a doubt, a top ten definitive stage musical. Movie musical? Not so much. Drawing a clear line between the two is what makes this list a little trickier. For this segment of the list, we have musicals that have no stage version, two Best Picture winners, a Palme d’Or winner, and a few musicals that may stretch the term a bit.

Historically, the British musical has been intertwined with British music, drawing on music hall in the 1940s and the pop charts in the 50s – low-budget films of provincial interest and nothing to trouble the bosses at MGM. It was announced earlier this week that the Brokeback Mountain star will play opposite Minnelli's good friend Alan Cumming as Emcee (he earned a Tony for the same role in a 1998 revival). "Michelle is a wonderful actress and I love Alan Cumming," Minnelli exclusively tells me. "I'm excited to see what they will do with the show and am sure it will be great!" Minnelli won an Oscar for her now-iconic portrayal of Sally in Bob Fosse's 1972 movie adaptation. Previews of...

Michelle Williams is making her Broadway debut! The Oscar nominee will take on the role of Sally Bowles in the Roundabout Theater Company's upcoming revival of Cabaret, a source confirms to E! Before Williams, Emma Stone was also reportedly attached for the role of Sally. Williams sure has some big shoes to fill. Any chance you recall the Cabaret revival Anne Hathaway was rumored to be involved with, then wasn't? Michelle Williams — the three-time Oscar nominee, not the many-time Beyoncé collaborator — is now onboard, joining Alan Cumming. Williams will play Sally Bowles, the role Liza Minnelli tackled in the 1972 movie from Bob Fosse. Emma Stone was originally eyed for the role, but she's busy making Amazing Spider-Mans. Performances should begin in early 2014.

Harris, born in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, on December 2, 1925, was 87. Throughout her career, Julie Harris collected ten Tony Award nominations, more than any other performer. Harris’ tenth and final Tony nomination was for The Gin Game (1997). In 2002, she was honored with a Special Lifetime Achievement Tony Award.

During Alan Cumming’s Tony-winning turn as the Emcee in Cabaret on Broadway, Liza Minnelli (who, obviously, won an Oscar for playing Sally Bowles in Bob Fosse’s 1972 film) went to see him backstage. She was so in awe of his brilliant performance that she said, “Alan, I want to be your friend forever.” In an era of celebrity air kisses that make no physical or emotional contact, that could have been the equivalent to, “Nice to meet you.” But if one thing was clear during last night’s wonderfully fun (and, sure, flawed… not that anyone cared) Liza & Alan...

Why, happy birthday, Ms. Liza! Today marks the legendary Liza Minnelli's 67th birthday, and she's celebrating as only a creature of showbiz could, by performing at Town Hall tomorrow, March 13, and March 14, with none other than Alan Cumming. The Town Hall shows are a reprise of the duo's instant-classic show this summer at one of Fire Island's more exuberantly trashy nightclubs — a show that Cumming called "the gayest night in modern history"and that was such a smash they performed an encore show the very next night. Both Minnelli, who won an Oscar for playing Sally Bowles in the Bob Fosse 1972 film version of Cabaret, and Cumming, who won a Tony for playing the Emcee in the musical's 1998 Broadway revival, have bonded over that connection, and they'll be performing songs like "Nowadays" at Town Hall. This is a big year for the birthday girl, who's not...

There are few celebrities whose style immediately comes to mind upon mentioning of their first names. There's Audrey Hepburn, with her black turtleneck and cropped pants; Brigitte Bardot, in cat-eyed liner and gingham; Grace Kelly with a New Look dress and white gloves. And then there's Liza Minnelli, in sequins.
Of course, we all imagine Liza in her iconic turn as Sally Bowles in 'Cabaret,' a role that won her the Oscar for Best Actress. It's an image that is in the collective pop culture unconscious -- you don't necessarily need to have seen the movie in order to know Liza's look. Bowler hat, short hemlines and sheer stockings. Deep necklines, big eyelashes and everything in black. Jazz hands.
The image of Sally Bowles became entwined with Liza's following the movie. Never would you see her without dramatic eye makeup, short hair and, of course, the sequins. She...

There are plenty of musicals that stand out as among the upper tier of the genre, but few are as easily recognized as both defining and reinventing it at the same time. Cabaret, winner of 8 Oscars, and only missing Best Picture on the technicality of releasing in 1972, pushed the boundaries of the possible abilities and sensibilities available to a musical feature film, and the effects of the new stage it built can be felt all the way to last year’s Les Miserables, which brings forward the surprising power inherent in a showcase of song that is not only not happy, but delivers a variety of emotion based on a solid exposition of the singer’s circumstance. The following of Jean Valjean’s musical efforts closely resembles the now iconic shift in the performance of Cabaret‘s theme song as we work our way to the end of the film.

Chicago – It’s easy to see why “Cabaret” was such a phenomenon when it was released in 1972. The film not only tackles issues of sexuality that the musical genre had largely ignored up to that point, it features the kind of evocative visual compositions and performances not often seen in the genre. It is a “serious musical.” And audiences and critics embraced it by bringing respect to a genre not known to have much, awarding the film eight Oscars, more than any movie that did not win Best Picture (“The Godfather” happened to come out the same year). Recently released in a restored WB digibook edition, it’s a great film for the musical collector to own on Blu-ray.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
With that praise out of the way, let me say something kind of blasphemous, and this is coming from a gigantic fan of the musical genre, I don’t think...

At the time of its 1972 release, “Cabaret” shattered the saccharine reputation of the movie musical with its edgy take on anti-Semitism, Nazism, abortion and even repressed homosexuality.
But as daring as the material was, actor Michael York says he wasn’t concerned about tackling the role of Brian Roberts, a reserved English academic with a secret fondness for men.
At a press event before a star-studded reunion screening at New York’s Ziegfeld Theater (where “Cabaret” had its original premiere), York recalled, “People did say to me afterward, 'Didn’t you think twice about what [playing a bisexual man] would do to your career?'”
Pointing to the fact that both the stage and film versions of “Cabaret” used gay author Christopher Isherwood’s 1945 book Goodbye To Berlin as their original source material, York added, “The whole reason, of course, that Isherwood was in Berlin was for the sex, which was pretty available … our...
