David Leitch
‘Deadpool 2’ Director David Leitch to Helm Netflix’s ‘Gears of War’ Film
David Leitch
David Leitch is in negotiations to direct Netflix’s feature adaptation of Gears of War, THR reports.

Jon Spaihts is writing the script, based one of Xbox’s biggest video game franchises.

The game is set on a planet on the brink of societal collapse when a monstrous threat in the form of underground creatures known as the Locust take humanity to the verge of extinction. Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is now charged with leading humanity’s last stand.

Leitch will produce with wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick via their 87North banner along with The Coalition, the Canadian developer behind the games.

Netflix acquired the rights back in November 2022 with plans to follow the feature with an adult animated series. There is, of course, the potential for more projects to follow.

Gears of War debuted on Xbox in 2006 and has sold more than 40 million copies across six installments.

Murderbot Finally Allows Alexander Skarsgård To Get Truly Weird (And It's A Delight)
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Murderbot" season 1, episode 2

Even if you're not familiar with Martha Wells' "The Murderbot Diaries" novel series, its Apple TV+ adaptation "Murderbot" soon makes it clear that the viewer is in for something unique. "Murderbot" revolves around a dystopian, corporate-controlled future where space travel and colonization are fueled by rampant capitalism. Its main character is a SecUnit security cyborg (Alexander Skarsgård) that has hacked its control module and is therefore technically free from obeying commands. Unfortunately, it also knows full well that it's a bit of an outdated model, and can see extremely vividly how it would be caught and recycled for parts the minute it went fully rogue. As such, it soldiers on, fulfilling its mission of protecting a group of scientists to the best of its erratic ability, passing its downtime by binging media, struggling with budding sensations of compassion ... and narrating the events...

Netflix's Gears Of War Movie May Have Found The Perfect Director
Image
The drums of battle are sounding for a live-action adaptation of the third-person shooter video game "Gears of War." The game series began in 2006, and it has a new installment, "Gears of War: E-Day," which was just announced to be in development last year. While the games have showed no signs of stopping, the prospect of a film adaptation of the series has been bandied about for almost as long as the series has existed, with New Line Cinema reported to have the rights way back in 2007. The adaptation then went through a rotating roster of directors, screenwriters, and studios through the years before eventually ending up at Netflix in 2022.

Now, finally, the musical chairs game of potential filmmakers seems to have stopped, with the directing duties falling upon David Leitch, whom The Hollywood Reporter is saying is in negotiations to helm the "Gears of War" movie. If this deal is made,...

The new DC Universe is well underway, with "Creature Commandos" having already premiered on Max and James Gunn's "Superman" hitting theaters this summer. But it's not just the obvious DC Comics A-listers making their way to the big screen in the new Dcu, as some interesting, lesser-known characters are going to take the spotlight as well. While no actor has been cast as of this writing, the perfect candidate has just emerged.

Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden at an event for Captain Marvel (2019)
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to Adapt Upcoming Taylor Jenkins Reid Novel for Laika’s Live-Action Division
Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden at an event for Captain Marvel (2019)
Laika’s live-action film division is taking shape, and it has an exciting new project it’s adapting based on a new work by one of the most in-demand authors today.

Laika has tapped filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to direct for the big screen “Atmosphere,” which is an adaptation of the next novel from “Daisy Jones and the Six” author Taylor Jenkins Reid. The book publishes next month on June 3 from Ballantine Books.

“Atmosphere” is a sweeping romance between two pioneering female astronauts breaking into NASA in the early days of the shuttle program in the late ’70s and early ’80s. While the principal characters are fictionalized, the historical context and authenticity of the world-building is grounded in the spirit of films like “Apollo 13,” “The Right Stuff,” and “Gravity.” The epic story is set against the backdrop of the 1980s space shuttle program and shows the extraordinary...

Oliver Laxe Sees ‘Sirat’ as Accessible Art With a Tribal Beat
Image
Cannes regular Oliver Laxe returns this year with “Sirat,” a Morocco-set, techno-fueled story about an almost mythical journey through the desert that pushes its characters to their absolute limits.

The filmmaker’s latest follows Cannes wins for his first three features: 2010’s “You Are All Captains” scored a Directors’ Fortnight Fipresci Award, 2016’s “Mimosas” scooped the Critics’ Week top Grand Prize and “Fire Will Come” a 2019 Un Certain Regard Jury Prize. “Sirat” unspools in competition.

Variety caught up with Laxe ahead of this year’s fest to discuss “Sirat,” his most contemporary and mainstream feature to date.

The film’s title is the Arabic name for the bridge between our world and paradise that spans the chasm of hell. It feels appropriate given the journey of the film’s characters. What does “Sirat” mean to you?

Oliver Laxe: I like the more colloquial meaning of “Sirat,” which is “path” or “way.

Inside the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront: Branding Whiplash and “The ‘White Lotus’ Effect”
Image
Taking a seat at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday morning, I scanned the crowd, soaking wet from the rain, and wondered how many gathered at the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront had any idea that they were about to get punked.

Two years after shoving the rebrand of streamer Max (née HBO Max) down advertiser throats, the “HBO” is being surgically reattached to the platform on which the company’s future hinges. Curiously, this development wasn’t front-loaded in the presentation. It came 30 minutes in, after multiple mentions of “Max,” when Casey Bloys arrived.

“With the course we are on and the strong momentum we’re enjoying,” said Bloys, “we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition.”

The proposition was received in the room with laughter and a smattering of “oh wows,” though no one appeared to interpret the news as a joke. If anybody was grieving Max,...

Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert Review – Concert Craft Meets Cinematic Vision
Image
Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert, directed by Paul Dugdale, marries concert footage and documentary flourish across a 2 h 38 m runtime. The film anchors itself in Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena and Al Wasl Plaza, punctuated by desert-dune vignettes that evoke Arrakis. Dugdale’s lens alternates between wide shots of an 18-piece ensemble and intimate interviews shot in black-and-white 4:3.

At its core sits Hans Zimmer, shifting from piano to guitar with the confidence of a seasoned storyteller. He commands each sequence with curator’s precision, guiding viewers through his film-score legacy. Live performances of Inception, Gladiator and Dune riffs segue into on-location set pieces—Loire Cotler’s haunting vocals against rolling sands, strobe lights dancing off Burj Al Arab’s spire.

The film highlights four decades of scores that helped redefine cinematic emotion. Dugdale’s editing weaves concert crescendos with personal anecdotes, revealing how a melody springs from...

Brandon Sanderson promises "Dune-style" sci-fi ahead in the Cosmere, but won't "leave behind epic fantasy"
Image
It's Day 4 of the Week of Sanderson here at Winter Is Coming, and we've got an exciting one for you today. Last month we had the privilege of interviewing Brandon Sanderson, the bestselling author of The Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, and a number of other books, including the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time. We've been previewing excerpts from this interview each day, leading up to the release of the entire thing later this week.

While Sanderson has written dozens of books across genres and age ranges, what he's best known for is the Cosmere, a fictional universe where all of his epic fantasy stories take place. I say epic fantasy, but at the Cosmere's current stage, that's evolving. Sanderson has written more than 20 books set in this universe to date. Readers been following worlds like Scadrial in Mistborn and Roshar in Stormlight over years or even centuries, watching...

Jordan Seeks To Entice International Productions With Bolstered 45% Cash Rebate
Image
Jordan’s Royal Film Commission has boosted its cash rebate for international film and TV production to 45%, as part of a bolstered offering of film and TV production incentives, unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday

The new package of incentives, which was approved by the Jordanian cabinet on Sunday, aims to support the local film industry at the same time as bolstering Jordan’s position as a destination for international film and TV productions.

With its world heritage sites such as Petra and stunning desert landscapes, which include Wadi Rum, Jordan has worked hard to establish itself as shooting destination over the past two decades with productions touching down in the territory including Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune 2, JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise Of Skywalker, and Guy Richie’s Aladdin.

Cannes Launches With Lots of Politics, No Cleavage and a Tarantino Surprise
Image
What about Bob?

The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival launched with lots of politics and a special tribute to Robert De Niro that saw the Oscar-winning legend slam Donald Trump as “America’s philistine president.”

On the red carpet, the main attraction — the French musical comedy “Partir un Jour,” which ended up earning a five-minute standing ovation — took a backseat to paparazzi scrambling to land a shot of De Niro, who made the trek to France to accept an honorary Palme d’Or from Leonardo DiCaprio. Past winners of the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top prize, such as Quentin Tarantino and Sean Baker, walked through a gauntlet of photographers, along with Eva Longoria, Julia Garner, Heidi Klum, and Alessandra Ambrosio. But Tom Cruise, who is in town to premiere “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” was nowhere to be found.

Juliette Binoche, who serves as jury president,...

Why is it so hard to predict when new movies will stream?
Image
There are a lot of factors involved in saying when a movie will move out of theaters onto streaming, which often leaves audiences frustrated.

When was the last time you went to a movie theater? That question is a much more difficult one for many Americans than it used to be. There was a time when going to a new movie was a weekly event for some families, but the Covid-19 pandemic changed everything about American moviegoing habits when it forced theaters to shut down in 2020.

At a time when audiences needed the distraction of entertainment more poignantly than ever, studios decided to begin releasing blockbuster movies directly to streaming. Movies like “Dune” were released to on-demand streaming services immediately, helping create a new kind of film-watching behavior that theater chains are still trying to recover from.

To be fair, studios are trying to help reverse course,...

Kojima praised the movie for being different from other MCU films, calling it “a truly kind-hearted MCU film.“

Thunderbolts* follows a group of villains and antiheroes who come together as a team. It stars Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, Hannah John-Kamen, David Harbour, and Sebastian Stan. Unlike other Marvel movies that focus on fighting a big villain, Thunderbolts* is more about personal struggles.

How Late Producer Jill Messick First Saw The Mega Potential Of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Through The Eyes Of Her Son
Image
Here’s a wonderful Mother’s Day story as Warner Bros./Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie flies past $900M: The entire movie started with a mother’s love for her son, noticing his passion for the create-your-own-world game.

Around 2011, former Miramax and Lorne Michaels Entertainment executive Jill Messick was in between producing gigs, and like many parents with millennial young children, recognized her 11-year old son Jackson’s obsession with the pixelated brick-building universe.

Jill Messick

Seeing Jackson’s affinity for the game, Messick was promptly moved to cold-call Stockholm, Sweden-based Mojang Studios to inquire about the movie rights. She then cobbled together frequent flyer miles to fly over and pitch the game’s architect and company founder Markus Persson.

At the time, Mojang — being an indie startup that mushroomed into the creator of one...

Who Is Emperor Shaddam IV In Dune?
Image
At the beginning of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune" -- set in the distant, distant future -- Duke Leto Atreides, the ruler of the ocean planet of Caladan, is assigned the task of overseeing the distant desert world of Arrakis by the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV. Arrakis is particularly valuable to the galaxy, as it is the only known source of the spice Melange, a consciousness-expanding psychedelic substance that grants humans the skills they need to travel through deep space. Arrakis had previously been overseen by House Harkonnen, a wicked and greedy clan of hedonists, and House Atreides seemingly promised a more benevolent rule and gentle hand when overseeing spice production. The Atreides and the Harkonnens have long been bitter rivals.

Of course, Shaddam IV has a scheme of his own, and only assigned House Atreides to Arrakis for reasons of treachery. It seems that Duke Leto Atreides was becoming...

Thunderbolts Taskmaster Was Almost an Entirely Different Black Widow Character
Image
If you’ve seen and read Frank Herbert’s Dune, you’ll find that the MCU’s Taskmaster is eerily similar to one of its characters. O-t Fagbenle, who plays S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and former flame of Natasha Romanoff Rick Mason, gave an audition for Taskmaster for Black Widow (2021) first. However, that role eventually went to Olga Kurylenko. While she made a mark in that movie, her second appearance in Thunderbolts was her final in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That too was short-lived.

Recently, Fagbenle appeared in one interview with The Direct, where he discussed his audition for the character. He said:

Basically, I first auditioned for Taskmaster, and it was this, it was a really incredible speech, actually. It was an audition I was very proud of. I’ve still got it in the back someplace. And, he was this — I made him with an African accent,...

Here's who should be cast in the Elden Ring movie

Elden Ring is a 2022 video game where you play as a warrior exploring the Lands Between, an ancient country blasted by war and want. A brutal conflict tore this world apart before you arrive, and it's your goal to rule over what's left.

Elden Ring is both light and heavy on story. A lot of the particulars must be puzzled out from item descriptions and other clues.

And yet the atmosphere is thick enough to swim in. That's why fans are still obsessing over the details years after the fact, and why there have been rumors of an Elden Ring movie pretty much since the game came out. There's been no official word on a film, but plenty of whispers,...

Jeremy Renner Says Filming 'Knives Out 3' Was "Like a Marvel Movie"
Image
Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner is switching out his bow and arrow for a little cloak and dagger, as he is starring in Netflix's Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third Benoit Blanc whodunnit from Rian Johnson. There are very few details about the central case that Daniel Craig's renowned detective will be investigating, leaving audiences to search for clues and breadcrumbs of information — but it's all very hush-hush, even for the cast, as Renner recently compared the project to being "like a Marvel movie" due to its secrecy.

During an appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Renner was quizzed about whether he would be starring as himself in the third Knives Out mystery after he technically made an appearance in Glass Onion (by way of a fictional bottle of hot sauce named "Renning hot" that had his face plastered on the label...

Hans Zimmer picks favorite scores of his own; do you agree?
Inception. The Thin Red Line. Driving Miss Daisy. Gladiator. Dune. Any one of these films – and dozens upon dozens more – could be argued as Hans Zimmer’s best score. But what does Zimmer consider the peak of his oeuvre?

Guy with a Movie Camera aka Reece Feldman recently challenged Hans Zimmer to find out what the composer thought of his own scores. To start off the single-elimination tournament, it was Pirates of the Caribbean against The Lion King, for which Zimmer earned his first Oscar. Zimmer easily picked the 1994 Disney classic for personal reasons, also noting it was his first score for an animated film. “Lion King is written for my daughter. I didn’t really wanna do the movie. I didn’t really want to do animation. And then the movie really surprised me because it’s about the father dying and my father died when I was six years old.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Will Ruin Christmas in the Best Way Possible
Image
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is all set to hit the theaters right in the middle of the holiday season. Announced for a pre-Christmas release on December 17, 2027, this new chapter in Middle-earth is perfectly timed to pull you out of your cozy holiday routine and into a world of epic adventure.

As a lifelong fan of the franchise, I can’t help but grin at the thought of history repeating itself, because if you remember, the original Lord of the Rings trilogy also dropped around Christmas, turning December into a magical mix of festive cheer and Middle-earth mayhem. The release will surely shake up Christmas plans for many, but what true fan would miss it even for a second?

AMC Theatres Quarterly Losses Hit $202.1 Million After Box Office Got Off to Rocky Start
Image
A lack of winter blockbusters took a bite out of AMC Theatres’ quarterly earnings.

Losses at the world’s largest cinema operator widened to $202.1 million as the box office got off to a rough start in 2025, a period that played host to flops like “Mickey 17,” “Snow White,” and “The Alto Knights.” That was a bleaker financial picture than the one painted in the prior-year quarter when AMC’s losses hit $163.5 million. Revenues for the three-month period ending in March fell 9% to $862.5 million, compared to $951.4 million during the same three-month period in 2024. Losses per share came in at 58 cents, compared to a loss of 78 cents in the prior-year quarter.

Those were in line with Wall Street projections. Analysts expected the exhibition giant to post a first-quarter loss of 59 cents a share on revenue of $837 million, according to FactSet. Shares of AMC were down modestly in after-hours trading, trading at just below $2.70 per share.

David Dastmalchian Explains the Big Difference Between Working on Indie and Huge IP Movies
Image
He's graced multiple Denis Villeneuve films. He had a starring role in the McU's Ant-Man movies, and he played a standout role in James Gunn's lovely redo of a Dcu tale (The Suicide Squad). And now, celebrated character actor David Dastmalchian is starring in an all-new horror movie following the success of Late Night with the Devil (2023). From director Felipe Vargas, Rosario is now playing in theaters, and MovieWeb recently caught up with Dastmalchian at a Los Angeles coffee shop event, where he was promoting Rosario by handing out drinks that were themed to the demon-centric movie.

Since the performer has dabbled in both Marvel and Dcu projects in addition to independent films like Late Night with the Devil and Rosario, Dastmalchian weighed in on how the two ends of the budget-spectrum compare — and if he prefers working in one or the other.

"Here's what I prefer: being in...

“Hell of a good movie”: Real Reason Why Denis Villeneuve Didn’t Return for ‘Sicario 2’ With Taylor Sheridan
Image
Denis Villeneuve teamed up with Taylor Sheridan to deliver what is arguably one of the best action-thriller movies of the 2010s. The duo worked together on Sicario, which was written by Sheridan and directed by Villeneuve. The film earned critical acclaim and emerged as a box office success.

Despite the first installment’s success, Villeneuve did not resume his directorial duties for the second installment. Although Villeneuve did not specify a reason for his absence from the sequel, the director’s comments have implied the real reason he did not return to helm Sicario 2, and here is everything you need to know in that regard!

Denis Villeneuve did not return for Sicario 2 because of other commitments

Denis Villeneuve tasted unprecedented critical and commercial success with his Dune movies. He initially rose to prominence with small-scale action and thriller movies. One of them was 2015’s Sicario, written by Taylor Sheridan.

One Aspect in Which ‘Dune’ 1984 Brutally Defeats Denis Villeneuve’s Films Will Be ‘Dune: Messiah’s’ Greatest Challenge
Image
Denis Villeneuve adapted Frank Herbert’s Dune to near-perfection with his incredible casting, attention to detail, and decision to split the original novel into two films. Despite both films going over five and a half hours combined, Villeneuve’s treatment of the Spacing Guild was very passive and almost absent.

The Spacing Guild in Herbert’s novels is almost a shadow government along the lines of the Bene Gesserit organization. The Guild is an important part of the feudal system of government that the Dune universe operates on, which David Lynch’s 1984 version established pretty well.

The White House Reveals "No Final Decisions" Have Been Made After Donald Trump's Statement on 100% Movie Tariffs
Image
The Donald Trump administration sent shockwaves through the film industry on Sunday when the president said over Truth Social that he had authorized the U.S. Trade Representative and the Commerce Department to start the process of imposing 100% tariffs on all movies made outside of the country. However, foreign productions aren't getting hit with a higher cost just yet. A White House spokesperson has now walked back those comments, saying that “no final decisions” have been made regarding the tariffs, yet all options are on the table at this time. Spokesman Kush Desai added that the end goal was to "deliver on President Trump’s directive to safeguard our country’s national and economic security while Making Hollywood Great Again."

There are still a ton of questions about what other possible actions are on the table, the logistics and legality of the president's initial plan, and whether television would be included,...

The Best Movies Based On 'Unfilmable' Books
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The book-to-screen adaptation is a tried and true formula that has led to some of the best movies of all time, like "Jurassic Park" and "The Wizard of Oz," which unknowingly paved the way for the success of "Wicked." However, not all adaptations receive the same praise. Movies like "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" and the messy adaptation of "The Dark Tower" have been criticized for glossing over too many details. This proves that not all books, no matter how easy they might seem to adapt were meant for the big screen.

While some books are destined for a cinematic future, others have been deemed unfilmable. Perhaps a plot relies too heavily on mystical beings, sometimes tales are controversial and unsettling, which could turn away moviegoers. It's a label that some filmmakers walk away from, while others...

Jack Nicholson May Be a Genius, but I Definitely Don’t Agree With His ‘Lord of the Rings’ Opinion That Didn’t Age Well
Image
Jack Nicholson is a legend, no doubt about it. The man could mumble a half-sentence and somehow sound like the smartest guy in the room. But even geniuses have their off days, and when it comes to The Lord of the Rings, I seriously can’t get behind his opinion, which (to me) feels like one of those takes that aged worse than Gollum’s skincare routine.

In a world where Frodo, Gandalf, and the entire Middle-earth saga are basically sacred, Jack’s old-school take just sounds painfully out of touch now. I get it, not everyone has to love hobbits and epic quests. But come on, this is Lord of the Rings we’re talking about.

How Dune 2 Corrects One Key Paul Atreides Issue From Frank Herbert's Book
Image
Paul Atreides is a complicated character. By the end of "Dune: Part Two," the heir to House Atreides is ascending in power and clearly on a path to unleash war across the Dune galaxy. This twist in the boy-turned-messiah's story is sobering. It doesn't completely align with the books, either — and it turns out that director Denis Villeneuve was well aware of that fact. In an interview with ScreenRant, Villeneuve explained the intention of having Paul "break bad" by the end of the two-part adaptation of the first book of author Frank Herbert's iconic sci-fi series:

"When Frank Herbert wrote the book, and then when the book came out, he was disappointed by how people perceived Paul Atreides. At the time, he felt that people were talking about Paul as a hero, and for him, he was an anti-hero. He was a dark figure. The book was a warning...

'Do I Dazzle You?': The Twilight Saga Movies Move to New Streaming Home
Image
There are few titles out there that get more hate than The Twilight Saga. The fantasy vampire young adult series started a true phenomenon, becoming a guilty pleasure for many, and its popularity continues to this day.

The Twilight Saga was based on Stephenie Meyer's four-novel series of the same name, and was adapted into five films between 2008 and 2012. The franchise starred Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner in the leading roles, sending them into worldwide stardom. The five films have been constantly moving streaming homes, and now they're officially available on Netflix.

10 Directors Who Hate Marvel Movies
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe may not quite be the cultural force it was throughout the 2010s, with something like "Captain America: Brave New World" being seen as a box office gamble rather than a surefire hit. Gone are the days where fans could be certain the newest MCU flick would be met with positive praise on Rotten Tomatoes and netting a sizable profit. Even so, the franchise isn't without its merits, and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The MCU was king of the hill for many years, and you don't reach that level of popularity without making a few enemies. Plenty of fans watch whatever comes out in theaters or on Disney+ for some escapism, but plenty of filmmakers adamantly believe the MCU has ruined the nature of cinema or at the very least aren't challenging audiences to engage with art in any meaningful way. The...

“Oh no, not again”: Real Reason Why Denis Villeneuve Almost Wanted to Back Out From One of His Best Movies of All Time
Image
The visionary behind Dune and Blade Runner 2049, Denis Villeneuve, is famous for his compelling storytelling techniques that dive into the darker aspects of humanity. Yet, when he first came across the script for Sicario, a riveting thriller about the US-Mexico drug war, his initial reaction was not what you’d expect.

The honest response pointed to just how emotionally taxing such intense narratives can be, even for experienced directors like him. What made him hesitant about taking on the film was the thought that this would be another morally complex and brutal project that would ask too much of his creative and emotional reserves.

Denis Villeneuve is not new to the emotionally taxing world of dark thrillers

Villeneuve is known for having consistently worked with darker subjects; human suffering and moral ambiguity have been recurring themes in some of his best works. Be it the intense psychological tumult in...
