Martin Scorsese has quite a list of projects to his name. Goodfellas comes to mind when anyone thinks of movies that made the world sit in awe of his skills. The Irishman is another project that reminded fans of his mettle recently.
That is what makes Scorsese a true genius – the web he weaves has lasted for years now. Even if Gen-z were to watch a Scorsese classic from the late 20th century or the 70s, they would appreciate his perspicacity. And Taxi Driver is one of his everlasting classics.

Brendan Fraser and Sarah Michelle Gellar have selected their next project — and it's a pretty original one. The two '90s icons will join Annie Murphy, Josh Gad, and Elizabeth Hurley for Breaking Bear, an animated series produced by streaming service Tubi, and it's apparently a mash-up betweenYogi Bear and mobster staple The Sopranos. Bring out the Gabagool, Boo-Boo! This time it's the bears who are hunting criminals.
Per Deadline's report, the adult animated series will see Fraser and Gellar as members of a "dysfunctional family of bears who go full criminal to stop frackers, mobsters, and a psychotic wolf pack from destroying their home. As they spiral deeper into the criminal abyss, they face off against biker gangs, an egomaniacal news anchor, and their own spectacular talent for self-sabotage." The two actors will executive produce alongside Gad and Julien Nitzberg. Tom DeLonge will also participate as executive producer with...

Kevin Costner has established himself as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood through his grit and talent. While the 70-year-old has starred in dozens of projects, it was one of the 80s’ superhit shows, not even his own, that defined his career.
Like every aspiring star, the multiple Oscar winner was once a promising actor trying to find his footing in Hollywood. It was Brian De Palma’s breakout hit, The Untouchables, in 1987, that changed the script for Costner. However, as is the intrigue of Hollywood, the Yellowstone star was not the first choice of De Palma for playing the charismatic G-Man in the slick action film.
In fact, Costner landed the role of the Prohibition agent only when De Palma’s original choice Don Johnson refused. Johnson’s refusal, on the other hand, can be attributed to his success as the lead actor of one of NBC’s iconic dramas.

What if there was a new animated mobster show, but all the main characters were bears? That's the premise of Tubi's Breaking Bear, which will serve as an ursine-themed parody of more serious fare like The Sopranos. And some cinematic and geek icons have already been cast as the voices of the bears and characters who surround them.
Deadline has all the details on the cast. Oscar-winning actor Brendan Fraser will play a bear called Jer, the oldest of the sibling bears who form the main characters of the show. He fancies himself a smart bear, but is in fact incredibly dimwitted and usually causes a lot of trouble with his stupidity.
Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar is playing a smarter bear, a female one called Blair. "Constantly overlooked, Blair’s the one who ends up cleaning up her brothers’ messes and keeping the family alive – whether they notice or not,...

Breaking Bear has just been announced, and the animated show is set to feature a standout voice cast that includes Brendan Fraser and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Fraser will be best known to many for leading the cast of The Mummy (1999) and its two sequels, but he has also appeared in a host of other film projects, recently experiencing a major acting comeback with his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale (2022). Gellar, on the other hand, rose to fame around the same time with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and recently appeared in Dexter: Original Sin.
Per Deadline, Fraser, Gellar, Annie Murphy, Elizabeth Hurley, and Josh Gad have been cast to lead Breaking Bear, a new adult animated series from Tubi. The series, which is created by Julien Nitzberg, is said to parody the tropes of mobster movies, with the report stating that the show will be akin to a comedic combination of Yogi Bear and The Sopranos.

There are only a handful of actors who have achieved the level of stardom and critical acclaim as Tom Hanks. Over four decades in Hollywood, he’s worked with a roster of renowned directors like Wes Anderson, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and Baz Luhrmann, building a filmography rich in variety and range. Known for beloved classics such as Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, and Toy Story, Hanks’ body of work has left a profound impact on audiences worldwide.
However, even for an icon like Hanks, not every film has been a hit. Alongside his masterpieces are a few titles he might prefer to leave forgotten. Whether due to lackluster performances, disappointing box office numbers, or poor critical reception, these movies simply didn’t live up to the Hanks standard.
From early missteps to recent experiments gone wrong, here are five Tom Hanks movies that didn’t quite make the grade.

Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers head writer Tony Oliver recently appeared on Dark Side of the Power Rangers, the latest episode of Hollywood Demons, to say it was a “mistake” to cast Black and Asian actors as the Black and Yellow Rangers due to cultural stereotypes. However, Power Rangers star Walter Emanuel Jones disagrees.
“I’ve always believed in focusing on the positive,” Jones wrote on Instagram. “I understand the impulse to address what might be seen as cultural insensitivity, but calling it a ‘mistake’ would dismiss the impact it had on countless people around the world who found inspiration and representation in TV’s first Black superhero — morphin’ into none other than the Black Power Ranger! It wasn’t a mistake; it was a milestone. It was an honor.“

The 1997 cult favorite preys on our most internal fears: Very early on in Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s horror film “Cure,” there was a scene that already had me reaching for the rewind button. A slow pan across the beach, where a man is squatting and furiously sketching on a notepad. Another man enters the frame, and suddenly, the sand seems to shift color from a glistening beige to a pallid greyish-green, like blood draining from the face. Of course, it’s an illusion caused by clouds drifting past the sun, but it’s also symbolic of the dark and malevolent shadow that will soon envelope the psychological landscape as well.
The two men exchange a few words, and it’s clear this intruder is an amnesiac. The artist tries to talk further with this mysterious man, inviting him home to see if he can help him reclaim his memory. His altruism...

Remakes are often viewed with tremendous suspicion by moviegoers, especially when the film getting revisited is a bona-fide classic. This is because the rationale for most remakes is pure exploitation. The studio holds the rights to a property that once made it a gazillion dollars, and, because the money people have decided the original's laid fallow long enough, the time is right to splash a fresh coat of paint on it and see if a new generation of viewers will fork over cash to check out a gussied-up retread.
There have certainly been worthwhile remakes over the years, but those were made with tremendous care and purpose by people who had a passion for the material. For the most part, you wind up with lifeless dreck such as 2014's "RoboCop," 2005's "The Fog," and 2006's "The Omen".
Speaking of indistinguishable, what are we to make of 1998's "Psycho," the shot-for-shot...

Gangster films have dominated the silver screen for almost as long as movies have existed. Stemming from the crime film genre, gangster films typically focus on organized crime while following the rise and fall of criminals. The criminal's actions are heavily explored, and the film often expresses the effects that their actions have on society. Gritty violence goes hand in hand with the theme of "crime doesn't pay" and with justice prevalently taking over the theme. Martin Scorsese is no stranger to the genre, creating numerous gangster films throughout different periods of history. After creating such great gangster films as Goodfellas and Gangs of New York, Scorsese went on to remake a successful Hong Kong film called Infernal Affairs.
The remake of Infernal Affairs took the core cat-and-mouse story but relocated the setting to Boston. Scorsese wanted to ground the story into some realism, so it was loosely inspired by the infamous mobster Whitey Bulger.

He may have once played the devil himself in the 1997 film The Devil’s Advocate, but today, Al Pacino is attempting to banish the powers of evil with Dan Stevens by his side. XYZ Films has dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming horror film The Ritual, which drops its two leading men into an exorcism flick based on a true story. Although it was initially set to go toe-to-toe with the Easter crowd, the power of Christ compelled the folks behind the David Midell-helmed production to move the feature’s release to the summer on June 6.
Fully embracing all the terror that comes with a movie about an exorcism, the teaser trailer for The Ritual introduces audiences to Pacino’s Theophilus Riesinger and Stevens’ Joseph Steiger. Both men are priests who have been summoned to help Emma Schmidt (Abigail Cowen) — a young woman who is suspected to be suffering from demonic possession.

This week’s episode of “The White Lotus” Season 3 begins with a bang, but not really.
Picking up not long after its predecessor, Tim (Jason Isaacs) promptly shoots himself in the head. The gunshot wakes Victoria (Parker Posey), whose screams over her husband’s body attract their daughter, Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook), who begins to scream and cry right alongside her mother. It is a viscerally upsetting moment, and a bit of a cheat on the part of “White Lotus” creator Mike White, who reveals that it is nothing more than a fantasy from a still suicidal Tim. Realizing the havoc his suicide would wreak, he decides to live for at least one more day and stashes the gun he stole from Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) in a (very easy to find) cabinet drawer.
When he goes back to bed, Victoria assures him that Piper is going to get over her...

Between 1971 and 1983, a new Al Pacino performance was an event ... most of the time. No one was excited to see Pacino follow up the supercharged "Cruising" by playing a stressed-out papa in Arthur Hiller's abominable 1982 family dramedy "Author! Author!" Other than that, there was always the promise of greatness with Pacino, whether presented in the form of "Panic in Needle Park" or "Scarface." And when your peak is "Dog Day Afternoon" and/or "The Godfather Part II," that's pure, transcendent craft.
There was, however, a growing sense with Pacino around the time he did the controversial "Scarface" that the actor was eschewing nuance and depth for scenery-devouring showmanship. His Tony Montana was the culmination of a tendency towards growling and gesticulating (which began in films like "...And Justice for All" and "Cruising"), topped off with a thick Cuban accent. It's a towering performance, but it's also one that proved difficult for him to shed.

The 1970s is arguably the greatest decade in cinema history, at least in terms of American cinema. Aside from the New Hollywood movement giving rise to many of the most legendary filmmakers audiences know today, there was also an abundance of great movies coming out in various genres. In most cases, there are up-and-coming actors and directors working together to make a great film. Sometimes, Classical Hollywood era directors would make a film here and there that audiences really enjoy but then go on to forget. It's not as though these films aren't great; it's just that there were so many iconic films coming out during the decade, that a few gems would get left behind in peoples' memories. More often than not, these films would team up a rising star with a respected director and the result would be pure gold. However, because the big new names weren't attached,...

Actors love to talk about authenticity, but if that were all it took, we wouldn't need them at all -- cops, lawyers, and singles on the prowl could just play themselves. There's more to it than that, of course, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to have a background in the role being played. Many former Marines have done well as actors, using their discipline for our entertainment. And as it turns out, many thespians with actual criminal records do a great job of playing crooks onscreen. As 2024's Oscar-nominated film "Sing Sing" depicts, theater programs can serve as therapy, and serve to reform offenders.
Throughout the history of the movie business, real-life criminals have found the movie business to be more comfortable than their former under-the-table careers. Audiences, in turn, can often tell when a guy onscreen really looks like he could kill or beat you. In some cases, showbiz...

The project was originally being developed for Netflix, with Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) overseeing a “cinematic universe” which would have included TV shows and movies. Gangster films have become an identifiable piece of American and international pop culture. The study of the human condition through criminality continues to fascinate audiences worldwide as the need to understand why people turn to lives of crime somehow helps people better understand themselves. With tons of big-name hits in the genre, such as The Godfather, Goodfellas and Scarface, it's easy to see why fans love the genre.
However, there are plenty of incredible films in the genre that, for one reason or another, aren't quite talked about as much as the iconic staples of gangster cinema. Films like Lawless and The Drop are underrated gems that deserve their day in the sun. Needless to say, more prominent names in the genre constantly overshadow multiple brilliant gangster flicks.
Updated on March 17, 2025, by Robert Vaux: The gangster genre is durable, and there is no shortage of brilliant gangster movies that never quite received their due.

Of all the "movie brat" directors that came out of the New Hollywood era, Brian De Palma has to be the most underrated. While audiences always remember his most popular films, like Scarface, The Untouchables and Carlito's Way, they tend to overlook some of his most compelling work. Before spending the latter part of his career making gangster movies and crime dramas, De Palma was the "movie brat" most associated with horror and thrillers. Aside from being the first director to adapt a Stephen King book, his love and passion for the history of horror in cinema went on to inspire him to tell those kinds of stories throughout the first decade of his career.

Oscar-winner Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman) has been nominated a total of nine times for Academy Awards over the course of his illustrious career. However, the beloved thespian recently revealed that he had the "most fun" acting in Dick Tracy, while his "favorite" role was playing the foul-mouthed Tony Montana in Scarface (1983) — despite the accolades he has garnered for his award-winning performances over the years. The Hollywood heavyweight made his selections while attending a special 50th anniversary screening of his must-see film, Dog Day Afternoon (1975) in Santa Monica, California. Pacino said during the film's Q&a at the American Cinematheque Aero Theatre afterward:
"Straight out, I just say nothing touches Scarface. And really the reason I feel that way is, I remember passing a movie house in Los Angeles, the Tiffany (West Hollywood) — it’s not there anymore — where they played all the old films, and they played Scarface...

Al Pacino spent time with some old friends, attending a 50th anniversary screening of “Dog Day Afternoon” at the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre — those friends being the other collaborators he misses from making the classic bank-robbery-gone-wrong drama a half-century ago.
The avuncular Pacino also made a lot of new friends at the Aero, with Tuesday’s capacity crowd reveling not just in his tales of making “Dog Day Afternoon” but assorted takes on other aspects of his career.
“Let’s just say it’s always a 50-year anniversary, you know,” Pacino said with a chuckle. “I mean, I did ‘The Godfather’ — it was 50 years; people celebrated — and I did ‘The Godfather Part II,’ which you got another, but I’m due on this one.”

Though The Twilight Zone is best known for its eerie horror and science fiction stories, some of the finest episodes occupy the Western genre. One of the most unusual of these frontier tales is "Dust," a powerful drama where all the action takes place within the human heart. Unusually mundane but deeply moving, the story concerns a con artist whose cruel scam triggers an unexpected epiphany in the citizens of a dying town.
In "Dust," a conniving merchant capitalizes on the impending execution of a Mexican man whose deadly misadventure was caused by poverty. Rod Serling often took aim at social ills like racism and fascism, but in this unusual Western episode of The Twilight Zone, the focus is on apathy, and a possible cure for this disease of the human heart.

Fans of Michelle Pfeiffer will get an opportunity to celebrate wildly — let’s call that “makin’ whoopee” — when she leaves her handprints and footprints in cement at the Tcl Chinese Theatre next month.
The ceremony will take place during the April 24-27 TCM Classic Film Festival, it was announced Thursday.
One of Pfeiffer’s most unforgettable performances — that of smoldering lounge singer Susie Diamond in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), for which she received the second of her three career Oscar nominations — will be showcased at the 16th annual event as well. (Watch her in that film on the piano, and we do mean On the piano, here.)
“There’s an undeniable quality to any part played by Michelle Pfeiffer,” TCM host Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement. “She blends — seemingly effortlessly (though it surely isn’t effortless) — elegance with depth, capturing the complexity in every character she plays.

One of the most iconic characters in the world of cinema is Tony Montana, the violent protagonist of Brian De Palma’s 1983 crime epic Scarface. Al Pacino transformed the future of gangster films through his outstanding portrayal of the drug lord.
Through his performance, Pacino brilliantly portrayed Montana as both an ambitious and powerful criminal whose story ended in self-destruction. With a thick Cuban accent, in his white suits, and with many memorable lines, Montana tells a complicated story of aspiration and the dark side of the American Dream.

However, the iconic character had a different real-life story, which shaped the movie’s creation. Are there historical grounds that say Tony Montana came from actual real-life incidents? Do his actual life events exceed the events shown in the movie? Well, the truth proves to be far more interesting than you would have expected.

The 1983 remake of Scarface is best remembered for Al Pacino’s iconic performance and the grand operatic direction of Brian De Palma. Its impact on pop culture has been stamped on hip-hop music, fashion, and video games like the Grand Theft Auto series for the past four decades. It's impossible to say whether the film's legacy would be as impactful had legendary director Sidney Lumet helmed the movie.

Gangster movies have long held sway over audiences. Just as stories about Robin Hood filled people's minds in medieval times, these tales eventually evolved into stories of organized crime. Bonnie and Clyde thrilled people living during the Great Depression, and Al Capone became a giant after Prohibition. The idea of everyday people turning to crime for a myriad of reasons has always been compelling. After all, crime always lurks just outside of reach for many people. Gangsters, who control crime itself, are just as salient as the idea of becoming a king.
Hollywood, of course, was quick to capitalize on the idea of gangsters. The Musketeers of Pig Alley (1912) was a silent film that saw a man fighting back against gangsters who stole his wallet. 1927's Underworld...

Director Luca Guadagnino says that his potential new take on American Psycho now has a fresh screenwriter on board. More here.
Luca Guadagnino is another of those filmmakers who seems have a constantly evolving slate of projects on the go. There’s his forthcoming take on grizzled WWII hero Sgt Rock, while others fall by the wayside: his Audrey Hepburn biopic and planned remake of Scarface being two that spring to mind.
One Guadagnino project that seemed like it might fall onto the filmmaker’s ‘rejected’ pile is a proposed adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis’ serial killer novel, American Psycho. The film already has one excellent cinematic interpretation – Mary Harron’s 2000 film, which starred Christian Bale as the title character. It prompts the question that often springs to mind when it comes to remakes: do we really need another? Especially when Harron’s film continues to find a new audience even 20 years later.

Al Pacino has given audiences some of the best performances in crime cinema history. From the calculated Michael Corleone in The Godfather to the ruthless Tony Montana in Scarface, Pacino has long been a master of the genre. But Serpico is classic Pacino with a twist, a crime drama that sees him as a frustrated NYPD cop determined to expose corruption within the force.
Based on a true story, Serpico is Pacino’s first portrayal as a real person – something he took rather seriously. And, while he may not be the typical Pacino fans have since come to know and love, he still commands every scene with the same intensity. A performance that earned him several awards and nominations, Serpico remains one of Pacino’s most underrated and best performances to date.

Brian De Palma’s Scarfacestands as one of the most iconic crime films in cinematic history. What many don’t realize, however, is that it’s actually a remake of a 1932 classic by Howard Hawks. This remake, though controversial at the time of its release, has since become a cult classic, influencing cinema and other entertainment since its 1983 release.
Though most audiences are familiar with De Palma’s Scarface as a stand-alone classic, few are aware of the original that paved the way for this iconic reimagining. Hawks’ version, a product of pre-Code Hollywood, set the stage for the evolution of crime cinema. While the two films share the same title and central themes, their setting, characters and treatment of violence stand as almost two separate pieces of work. The influence of both films has since echoed across generations, with each version offering its own unique perspective on the American Dream.

Fans always talk about Martin Scorsese's most distinct gangster movie of all time: Goodfellas from 1990. Many fans often neglect to talk about the gangster classic, Casino, which he made five years later, and is also one of the best gangster movies of all time. With that being said, Casino is not a better movie than Goodfellas, even if the film is often underrated. Nonetheless, Casino is a solid gangster flick with tons of memorable one-liners, important themes and captivating performances. The film's ability to be a crowd-pleaser, a companion piece to Goodfellas, and a commentary on criminality is what makes it a great film. Scorsese's knowledge of street-level situations as well as Italian-Americanism always gives his gangster films a distinct look, feel and style. Also, films like Goodfellas and Casino highlight some of the best usages of film language in Scorsese's films. These elements are on display in...

Since the Golden Age of Hollywood, gangsters have dominated the crime genre, with films like The Untouchables and Scarface exploring the lives of notorious mob bosses and drug kingpins. For some, these films represent the pinnacle of genres like thriller, crime, and drama, typically thanks to the great alignment of cast, writer, and director. Despite their violent nature, these films appeal to people of all stripes, often reinventing cinema altogether through their success.
Gangster movies vary in scale, with modern classics like Sexy Beast and A History of Violence making great use of relatively small casts. Other movies have reeled in audiences through their assembly of some of the biggest and most talented stars of their era, often turning in career-best performances. Through these movies, fans have been shown the inner workings of some of America's most dangerous criminal organizations -- even if they play fast and loose with the facts.

Sean Baker and Anora are continuing their run with guilds, as the movie has taken home Best Original Screenplay at the WGA Awards following huge wins with both the Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America. On the Adapted Screenplay front, RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes won for Nickel Boys.
But the WGA Awards are hardly the most reliable barometer for the Academy Awards. In fact, since 2010, the matching winners have pretty much always been in alternating years save for the back-to-back victories of Parasite and Promising Young Woman. Notably, however, there is only one other competitor that Anora was up against at the WGAs that is also up for Best Original Screenplay: Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, as Challengers, Civil War and My Old Ass were benched. Instead, the Best Original Screenplay Oscar nominees contain three replacements that were ineligible for the WGAs: The Brutalist, September 5 and The Substance.

Since the 1930s, the mafia and organized crime have been a fascinating element of the silver screen and initially established by popular classics such as The Public Enemy, Little Caesar, and Scarface. Today, the gangster genre continues to personify the mafia, ranging from real-life mobsters in the Italian mafia to a large group of misfits in a fictional crime organization. Through the years, there have been notable films centering around the mafia, but titles like The Godfather, A Bronx Tale, and Goodfellas, fall into an exclusive category of excellence.

An indisputable icon of the celluloid, revered for his bravura performances and infectious charisma, Al Pacino’s identity has become an inextricable element in the canon of American cinema. In a career spanning more than half a century, Pacino has cultivated an enviable track record, working with greats like Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet, Martin Scorsese, and William Friedkin, to name a few of cinema’s wizards, and producing some of the most excellent performances ever put on screen.
Born Alfredo James Pacino, the South Bronx native started honing his acting chops in theatre before taking the leap into cinema with a small role in “Me, Natalie” (1969). He next surveyed the life of a person with a heroin addiction in “The Panic in Needle Park.” He would then go on to play one of the most popular characters in cinema in “The Godfather,” shooting him to superstardom – all at thirty-two,...

When you think of "Dirty Harry," you most likely think of the seminal 1971 action thriller and not of the four official "Dirty Harry" films that came in its wake (five if you count 2008's "Gran Torino"). The original film remains one of the best action movies, and arguably best films, of the 20th Century, somehow appealing to our base appetite for all-out action while also presenting a nuanced portrayal of its problematic protagonist. Is Harry Callahan merely a walking advertisement for the efficacy of police brutality, or someone hampered in his pursuit of justice by a society that cares more about bureaucracy than actually catching the bad guy? It's not entirely clear in Don Siegel's film, which is part of the reason why it endures to this day.
But for better or worse, Eastwood did make a heck of a lot of follow-ups to "Dirty Harry" — a controversial film...

Luca Guadagnino is reportedly talking to Warner Bros about bringing Stanley Kubrick’s unrealised Aryan Papers to the screen.
Luca Guadagnino seems to love being linked to various projects, as it’s not uncommon for the filmmaker to airily throw out the title of a new film that he is (or sometimes is no longer) attached to. At the tail end of last year, he was attached to a comic book adaptation of Sgt Rock, while just last month he played down the long-standing rumour that he’d be tackling a remake of American Psycho starring Austin Butler.
This is all par for the course for Guadagnino, though, who has previously talked up (or down) connections to other projects such as Lord Of The Flies, Scarface, Separate Rooms and an Audrey Hepburn biopic. As it stands, at least two of those projects (the Hepburn one and the Scarface remake) are...
