Warner Bros. Demands Destruction of ‘Christmas Story’ Leg Lamp Statue in Oklahoma Town
Image
The Old Man from A Christmas Story was thrilled to win a leg lamp as his major award, but that was nothing compared to the enthusiastic citizens of Chickasha, Oklahoma. The town built a 50-foot version of the movie prop to lord over its downtown, beckoning visitors from near and far. But now, Warner Bros. is playing Scrooge, demanding that Chickasha amputate the leg for violating its trademark.

But the obvious question first: Why would any community erect a giant leg in the center of town? The Chickasha Community Foundation says it’s a tribute to the late Noland James, a local who was an art professor at the University of Oklahoma. James claimed to have designed the lamp for A Christmas Story, and the statue is a tribute to the area legend.

The leg lamp put Chickasha on the map, say locals, with social media posts and other publicity allegedly reaching a billion people.

10 Old-School Zombie Movies That Are Still Awesome Today
Image
Horror cinema has a strange habit of resurrecting itself from time to time. The Universal monsters of the 1930s enjoyed a technicolor reincarnation in the Hammer films of the late 1950s; slasher films bled out by the mid-'80s, but Scream brought them back with a vengeance; and the walking dead just keep coming back for more. Today's zombie fans can easily see why this trope never dies with this list of terrifying 20th-century cult classics and hidden gems.

Everyone knows that George Romero is the reigning champion of zombie cinema, but the tradition he established has begotten a horde of powerful and innovative followers whose films still stand up today. This horror history lesson will show fans of modern hits like The Walking Dead and the 28 Days Later franchise that their faves come from a grand tradition that refuses to stay dead.

This Early Zombie Film Is Still...

Grab Your Kleenex – Paul Giamatti’s 97% Rotten Tomatoes Holiday Classic Graduates To a New Streamer Next Month
Image
With the holiday season now behind us, the weeks set aside for watching movies centered around the most wonderful time of the year have come to an end. Films like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story are certainly only meant for the days leading up to – and perhaps directly following – December 25, but there are other holiday titles that we’d argue could be watched year-round. One of those movies will graduate to a new streaming home next month, as Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers lands on Peacock on February 28.

Why I'm Excited to Join Cbr as the New Senior Producer and Lead Host
Image
When my friends and I were tiny adventurers looking for ways out of the house, we’d often end up at the local movie theater deciding which cinema-loving audience would get to enjoy the full extent of our youthful (and probably annoying) enthusiasm. Sure, we went outside occasionally, but it would usually end up with somebody’s tongue stuck to a pole a’la A Christmas Story, so our parents were more than happy to drop us off at the mall and say a little prayer.

My friends were very flexible in their choices, but I was the one who had thoughts. So in my memory, I acted as a sort of cinematic cruise director, shepherding everyone to a specific title that I thought we had to see in order to be either well-rounded or supremely entertained. Watching something on a screen was a way for me to understand my...

1 of Adam Sandler's Funniest Movies Lands a New Streaming Home 30 Years After Its Release
Image
It may only have a 40% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but Adam Sandler’s 1995 movie, Billy Madison, has become a classic among audiences since it was released 30 years ago. The film boasts a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and hits Hulu on Feb. 1.

Billy Madison stars Sandler as the titular man-child, Billy Madison, who, to inherit his father’s hotel empire, must repeat first through twelfth grade again. His father, Brian, is played by the late Darren McGavin, of A Christmas Story fame. In the process of going through school again, Billy is hindered by his rival, Eric Gordon, played by Emmy-winner Bradley Whitford (The West Wing).

Although Billy Madison wasn’t a box office hit, grossing just $26.4 million against a budget of $10 million, it is considered to be one of Sandler’s funniest movies and one of the first starring the Saturday Night Live alum. Before Billy Madison, Sandler...

Christmas action films, Red One and Carry-On, topped the streaming charts in December
Image
‘Twas the season to be thrilled with action. As people settled in and got cozy with their kith and kin this past Christmas, sometimes watching classics like Home Alone, A Christmas Story and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation just isn’t enough. Many viewers checked out some newer movies that incorporated action with their holiday theme. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dwayne Johnson’s Red One on Prime Video became a big hit in homes after its brief theatrical run that grossed $186 million globally. His Santa action flick would be followed by Netflix’s Carry-On, which stars Taron Edgerton as a Tsa agent working on Christmas Eve when he’s faced with a terrorist plot.

Red One faced much criticism for its content, but the newest live-action film from megastar Dwayne Johnson topped the streaming charts in December with 2.1 billion minutes of viewing. Meanwhile, while finishing in second overall, Carry-On was...

Guillermo del Toro picks It’s a Wonderful Life as his favorite Christmas movie
Image
This past holiday season, we shared some unconventional Christmas movie recommendations, like The Silent Partner, Anna and the Apocalypse, The Ref, and my own recommendation, Trancers. But even though I love Trancers and also watch Anna and the Apocalypse every December, my two favorite Christmas movies are not unconventional choices at all: every December 25th, I watch A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation. Very common choices. Someone else with very common choice for their favorite Christmas movie is filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who revealed to BFI that his holiday favorite is It’s a Wonderful Life.

Directed by Frank Capra, who crafted the screenplay with Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, and Jo Swerling, the 1946 classic It’s a Wonderful Life was based on the short story The Greatest Gift by Philip Van Doren Stern (which was loosely based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol) . Here’s the synopsis: George Bailey has so many...

Max Audiences Are Spellbound by This Magical Holiday Must-Watch With 80% on Rotten Tomatoes

Even though they aren’t technically Christmas movies, the Harry Potter film series has become a staple in the holiday viewing season. There’s nothing better than enjoying a solid movie marathon, and stepping into the Wizarding World and strolling into The Great Hall in all of its Christmassy goodness takes it to an entirely different level. Perhaps that’s why the movie that started it all — Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — is currently casting a spell on Max’s Top 10. Sure, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story may seem like the logical content to indulge in during the week between Christmas and the New Year, but a Harry Potter marathon will give you not one, not two, but eight feature-length bits of entertainment.

A Holiday Horror Hit Is Shaking Things Up on Max’s Top 10
Image
It’s hard to find a movie that can cross genres and appeal to a multitude of fans but - by golly - Joe Dante did exactly that with his 1984 feature Gremlins. It’s hard to box Gremlins into one singular category, so we’re lucky that we don’t have to. The movie is technically a horror feature, but its cute, Christmassy, campy, comedic, and cuddly undertones put it in a league of its own. With all these pieces fixed together, it’s easy to understand why the film is quickly climbing the charts over at Max, where Gremlins currently sits in the #6 spot on the streamer. Sure, holiday favorites like A Christmas Story Christmas and the box office bomb Joker: Folie à Deux are topping the Top 10 - and for good reason - but Gremlins is truly where it’s at for all the campy horror lovers out...

Hallmark’s ‘Holiday Touchdown’ Stars Test Their Festive Trivia Knowledge (Video)
Image
Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story has become the festive film of the 2024 holiday season, but how well do the Hallmark stars know holiday trivia? TV Insider sat down with Tyler Hynes, Hunter King, Diedrich Bader, Megyn Price, and Ed Begley Jr. to quiz them on their knowledge. Bader hilariously left the room when Begley Jr. admitted that he hadn’t seen A Christmas Story before. What Ralphie wanted for Christmas in the holiday classic stumped most of the cast, but Hynes got pretty close, so we gave him the point. They all had great guesses for the highest-grossing Christmas movie ever, but Hynes won that round with Home Alone. The cast then had a fun moment when we asked which of the movie’s stars was born on Christmas Eve. Spoiler alert: It’s Bader! Just don’t ask them which show originated the word “Chrismukkah.” The O.C.

Xmas Eve at the ‘A Christmas Story’ House Will Cost You $2,495 (Plus $10 for the Bunny Suit)
Image
It’s a dark and rainy Monday night in December, and as you slowly drive northwest up a slanted street, a festive mustard-yellow house at the corner gradually comes into view. Cheerful holiday lights line the porch roof, while a warm, yellow-orange glow illuminates the upper floors. As you get closer, the real star of the house becomes visible in the green-trimmed front window: a shapely leg lamp. A major award. Electric sex gleaming in the window.

This scene doesn’t take place on good old Cleveland Street in the years preceding World War II — but on West 11th Street in modern-day Tremont, a historic neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio. In a case of life imitating art, the house with the fishnet-clad leg lamp is the very same residence bespectacled Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) and his family occupy in the 1983 film A Christmas Story. The beloved holiday season staple follows Ralphie as he dodges bullies,...

'Kill Grinch': Lucy Liu Reprises Kill Bill Role in SNL Sketch (That Was Shockingly Cut for Time)
Image
Saturday Night Live released a "unique" retelling of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It's a straightforward adaptation of the story for a full minute, and then it became a Quentin Tarantino fever dream.

Lucy Liu reprised her Kill Bill character in a cut-for-time Saturday Night Live sketch. A Quentin Tarantino film is often a highlight in any actor's career, and Liu got hers after breakout stints in two Charlie's Angels movies; she was cast in Kill Bill: Volume 1 as O-Ren Ishii. Liu played a one-and-done character, however; Beatrix Kiddo sliced O-Ren's cranium clean off toward the end of the film. Kill Bill's iconic moments have been referenced and imitated in media since, but so far, Liu's scenes have not been parodied. SNL's reimagining of How the Grinch Stole Christmas broke that streak.

The Ref: An Unconventional Christmas Recommendation from JoBlo!
Image
When Christmas time comes around, most have their rotation of A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, or Elf to get them into the holiday spirit. But I go for different fare. Because what are the holidays for if not for uncomfortable family drama. A crumbling marriage isn’t usually a plot point of a Christmas movie but that’s what makes The Ref so unique. Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis play Lloyd and Caroline, a married couple clearly on the path to divorce. But everything is turned upside down when criminal Gus (played by Denis Leary) holds them hostage until the citywide manhunt for him chills out, and he can escape. Denis Leary is at his absolute peak, with even the teaser trailer for this film just being him ranting, standup-style about Christmas. This is crude so it may make for some awkward moments with family, but what are the holidays...

50 Classic Holiday Movies Gallery: From ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ ‘A Christmas Story’ To ‘Die Hard’ And ‘The Holiday’
Image
The concept of the holiday movie began back in 1898 with G.A. Smith’s pioneering silent film Santa Claus. The first of its kind to show the depiction of Santa that only runs just shy over a minute.

Since then Hollywood has belted out an array of films that have either been true to the genre such as A Christmas Story; The Holiday; Miracle On 34th Street; Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey or films like Die Hard; Brazil, and Gremlins that have teetered on the edge of identifying as a holiday film.

Then there are the anti-holiday movies and the Christmas horrors. Subgenres of their own like the slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, and Christmas Evil, a John Waters favorite, so you are inclined to know what demented viewing you are in for.

The Silent Partner: Christopher Plummer is the scariest Santa of all time in the Best Christmas Movie You Never Saw
Image
I grew up in Canada, and I’d wager the experience – at least as far as pop culture goes – was probably pretty similar to growing up in the States. Yet, there were some minor, strange differences. Here, we have a regulatory body called the Crtc (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission), which ensures that about 30% of the content that’s broadcast on TV qualifies as “Canadian Content.” Thus, whenever you turn on the TV, one of our Canadian channels is bound to show something Canadian, including movies. While holiday classics like A Christmas Story and Black Christmas counted as Canadian Content (God Bless Bob Clark) we could reliably see around the holidays, more adventurous TV stations would show something outside the box. One such station was the adult-oriented Showcase (not to be confused with Showtime), which would program an utterly mental movie called The Silent Partner every Christmas Eve.

If you’re not Canadian,...

Poll: What’s Your Favorite Christmas Movie?
Image
’Twas the weekend before Christmas… With the holiday season upon us, many of us are starting to revisit some of our of Christmas favourites. I actually went to see a 4K re-release of the original Black Christmas last night here in Montreal. There’s something comforting upon returning to our old favourites every year, whether they be traditional Christmas classics, or perhaps something a little more modern, like Die Hard, which, despite many claiming otherwise, has totally established itself as a Christmas classic over the years.

Whatever the case, there are certainly Loads of Christmas movies, with everything from old-time classics like It’s A Wonderful Life or some of the many versions of A Christmas Carol (the Alistair Sim version is the best Imo), or something like Love Actually, which is virtually inescapable at this time of the year.

With that in mind, we’d love to figure out just...

The Order: On Demand brings Jude Law’s compelling FBI thriller home for the holidays for a Christmas Eve digital release
Image
Santa Claus won’t be the only thing coming down the chimney this Christmas Eve, as director Justin Kurzel’s FBI thriller The Order comes to On Demand. In the film, a string of violent robberies in the Pacific Northwest leads a veteran FBI agent into a domestic terrorist plot to overthrow the federal government. Nothing says Christmas like violence and corruption! Who’s bringing the spiked eggnog?

Here’s the official synopsis for The Order:

“For over a year, a series of bold daylight bank robberies and armored car heists leaves law enforcement baffled and the public panicked throughout the Pacific Northwest. As the attacks become increasingly violent, FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) becomes convinced that the robberies are the work of a domestic terrorist gang that plans to use the loot to finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government.

Based on a true story, The Order...

'Black Christmas' Is So Much More Than a Holiday Christmas Horror Movie
Image
If there's anything better than Christmas itself, it's Christmas movies. Who doesn't enjoy cuddling under a warm blanket and watching Home Alone, or even taking in the action of John McClane (Bruce Willis) killing bad guys in Die Hard? Everyone has their favorite Christmas movie, but perhaps the most popular of all is Bob Clark's A Christmas Story. This wasn't Clark's only Christmas movie though, and arguably not his most influential. Before Bob Clark made this holiday staple, he was a horror director, and his scariest offering was 1974's Black Christmas. Released 50 years ago, it's one of the most important horror movies ever made. The slasher craze, which is mostly credited to the success of Halloween, wouldn't exist without it.

Yes, The Grover Dill Actor Really Tried To Buy The A Christmas Story House — Where Yano Anaya Is Now
Image
Fans of A Christmas Story will remember the snot-nosed bully Grover Dill, and the actor who plays him, Yano Anaya, must have had a great time on set, considering how he wanted to purchase the original A Christmas Story house. A Christmas Story is a classic of the Christmas movie canon and as much a part of the holidays as Home Alone, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Miracle on 34th Street. It's synonymous with the season and a heartwarming and hilarious tale about a young boy and his family's misadventures during Christmastime in the 1940s.

The third installment in the Parker family saga, which includes the first film in the series, The Phantom of the Open Hearth from 1976, and the latest film, A Christmas Story Christmas, which arrived in 2022. A Christmas Story is by far the most memorable movie in the holiday franchise, with incredible quotes, hilarious scenes, and lovable characters.

This Is What Appealed to Audiences About Red One
Image
'Tis the season for watching holiday movies, and Amazon MGM Studios is delivering a brand new one in the Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Chris Evans-starring action-comedy, Red One. During a time when a big-budget movie is expected to be a sequel to a popular franchise, based on a comic book or video game, remake or reimagining of a beloved movie, or cashing in on 1980s or 1990s nostalgia, it makes this holiday-themed appear to be a risk, and one that didn't pay off at the box office.

Red One is a PG-13 action comedy where The Rock plays North Pole's head of security, Callum Drift, who enlists bounty hunter Jack O'Malley to help him find and rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus (played by J. K. Simmons). The big question about Red One is who the film was made for. There are a few things about the action comedy...

Why Flash Gordon's Name Is Included In A Christmas Story's Credits
Image
Eagle-eyed fans of A Christmas Story will notice one peculiar name in the credits – Flash Gordon. The 1983 movie has created a massive legacy, going down in history as one of the best Christmas movies of all time. Between the leg lamp and the iconic quotes, there are so many reasons to enjoy the story. Some of the most entertaining moments are Ralphie's daydreams, which offer excitement into an otherwise straightforward story.

Some examples of Ralphie’s fantasies include him fighting bandits and Black Bart, his parents feeling guilty about poisoning him, and the teacher and class celebrating him. However, not every fantasy scene made it to the final cut. One of the most interesting bits of trivia about A Christmas Story is the fact that Flash Gordon nearly appeared in the movie, and his name even shows up in the credits.

The Best Christmas Movie, According To IMDb
Image
Although there is no shortage of Christmas movies out there, very few of them end up lasting a long time in the public consciousness. The last movie to truly prove itself long-term was the 2003 comedy "Elf," which is up there on most people's rewatch list every time the holidays come around. For the most part, though, our favorite Christmas movies are the older ones, like "Home Alone" (1990), "A Christmas Story" (1983), "A Christmas Carol" (1951), or "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947).

Before all of those was "It's a Wonderful Life," which came out in 1946 and is now considered the absolute best film the Christmas genre has to offer. With a score of 8.6 out of 10 on IMDb, the movie is ranked 21st among the site's top movies ever. In 2024, at least, nobody's got a bad thing to say about the film. It's a heartwarming story about a guy who learns to value the wonderful life he has,...

The Best Horror Movies Streaming This Month Are Christmas Horror Movies (December 2024)
Image
It's the holiday season, which can mean only one thing: it's time to watch Christmas horror movies! Christmas horror is nothing new. In the Victorian era, folks would gather by the fireside around Christmas time to tell each other ghost stories (this is how we got "A Christmas Carol"). Over the years, the horror genre has embraced this idea by unleashing horror films set on or around Christmas. Some of these films are quite bad and seem to recycle the same boring idea ("What if a guy dressed as Santa Claus killed people?!") over and over again. But there are others that make the yuletide bright. Hell, even some of the killer Santa stories work. As the weird year that was 2024 comes to a close, and the horrifying uncertainty of 2025 lurks right around the corner, let's chug some mulled wine, deck the halls, and watch the following Christmas-centric horror movies.

1 of 2023's Best Movies Was an Instant Christmas Classic
Image
This article will contain spoilers for 'The Holdovers.'

Throughout time, Christmas and holiday movies became staples of December. Rewatching It’s a Wonderful Life became tradition in many homes, and cable channels constantly play reruns of Home Alone, A Christmas Story, and Elf once the calendar finally says December 1st. In recent years, however, it seemed like the well had dried up when it came to a new popular Christmas film that would transcend generations. While Hallmark Channel and Netflix churn out new holiday rom-coms every year, there was rarely, if ever, a Christmas movie that drew in wide audiences and actually lasted more than two weeks in the pop culture lexicon.

That all changed in October 2023, when The Holdovers hit theaters and captured the hearts of audiences and critics-and the Christmas spirit. The story of an unlikely found-family navigating the happiness and heartbreak the holiday season could bring instantly won over moviegoers,...

’Home Alone’ and ‘Home Alone 2’ Jumps Up Disney+ Chart
Image
Home Alone is No. 1 on the Disney+ Top 10 chart in the United States, so there's reason to celebrate for those fans of "ya filthy animal." The must-see Christmas classic beat out not only the premiere of Jude Law's Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, but the holiday favorite outperformed the original Moana, too. The Goonies-eque Star Wars series checked in at No. 3, while all the hype surrounding Moana 2 inevitably played a part in Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s first go-round as Maui landing the No. 2 slot on the Top 10.

A number of other holiday hits filled out the Top 10, such as No. 4 The Polar Express, No 5. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, No. 6 Mickey and the Very Many Christmases, and No. 8 The Santa Clause 2. Meanwhile, the box office blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine came in at No. 7, while both The Lion King (1994) and the animated movie's 2019 CGI reimagining rounded out the...

What Year Is A Christmas Story Set In?
Image
A seasonal television classic, A Christmas Story, was released in 1983 but was set just over 40 years earlier. As a result, the film could better capture that warm, nostalgic vibe often associated with Norman Rockwell paintings. But rather than focusing on positivity, A Christmas Story embraces the chaos that comes with every family. Although the film's themes are timeless, there's still the lingering question: What year is A Christmas Story set in? The question is kept deliberately vague so as to preserve the sense of slightly fuzzy nostalgia that has made the film so beloved. But a few concrete clues appear in the movie itself that provide clarity to the question.

Based on the writings of humorist Jean Shepherd, A Christmas Story follows a boy named Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) — a stand-in for the author himself — who wants nothing more than to get a Red Ryder Bb gun for Christmas. However,...

Chuck Norris’ ‘80s Christmas Action Movie 'Invasion U.S.A.' Is Just as Good as 'Die Hard'

Chuck Norris hasn’t starred in a movie since 2012, when he picked up Sylvester Stallone’s call and became Booker in The Expendables 2, a man so tough that a cobra allegedly died after biting him. Despite that, he is still cherished by action movie fans. Norris is the subject of many internet memes, many of which joke about his grit and no-nonsense attitude. He is a United States Air Force vet after all, and has a black belt in Tang Soo Do, judo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
