The scenes from Iceland were filmed by Haroun Tazieff in 1965, on the island Vestmannaeyjar. It shows 3 sisters, Kristbjörg Sigríður Kristmundsdóttir, born 1954, Halldóra Kristmundsdóttir, born 1957, and Áshildur Kristmundsdóttir, born 1959. They first found out about being in this film in June 2015.
The narration refers to the Japanese word "Tora" as the name of an individual pet cat. The literal translation of the word "Tora" in English is "Tiger".
"Sans Soleil" was shot entirely with a 16mm Beaulieu camera, silent (there isn't a single synchronous shot in the entire film) with 30m reels - 2'44 of autonomy! - and a small cassette recorder - not even a walkman, which didn't yet exist... The only sophisticated element - for the time - was the Spectre image synthesizer, also borrowed for a few days. Chris Marker, 1988.
This film is part of the Criterion Collection, spine #387.
