Ridley Scott is currently in production in Italy on The Dog Stars, a post-apocalyptic thriller based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller.
Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) leads an ensemble that also includes Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Guy Pearce (Prometheus), and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange).
Mark L. Smith penned the script, which is set in a near future after an unnamed pandemic has decimated American society.
The story follows Hig (Elordi), a civilian pilot living a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a tough ex-marine (Brolin). The two men couldn’t be more mismatched but depend on each other to fend off roaming invaders.
When a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside the pilot that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no...

Tom Cruise, the man who has been ruling our hearts for as long as we can remember, is one of those rare actors who have been at the top of the Hollywood food chain for decades. Tom Cruise doesn’t do blockbusters; he Is the blockbuster. And when you pair that kind of star power with the legendary Ridley Scott – visionary master behind masterpieces like Blade Runner and Gladiator – you’d expect fireworks to go off, right?
Thus, when the two paired up to bring the epic dark fantasy adventure, Legend (1985), to life, there should’ve been magic. Here, “should’ve” is the keyword because even Tom Cruise’s star power fails once in a lifetime. Yeah, he seriously regrets this one, and not for the reasons you may think.

In the hushed flicker of Super 8 frames, Like Tears in Rain becomes less a film than a whisper from another life. Over its eighty-minute span, Sanna Fabery de Jonge stitches together moments of Rutger Hauer’s journey—childhood laughter in Breukelen, silent reveries on a Frisian shore, the slow burn of 16 mm travelogues.
These glimpses unfold against testimonies from his closest companions—Ineke ten Kate, Paul Verhoeven, Whoopi Goldberg, Mickey Rourke—each voice a refracted fragment of the man who shaped his own legend. Born in 1944 and passing in 2019, Hauer emerges here as both wanderer and philosopher, a figure caught between the roar of adventure and the stillness he sought.
His improvised words in Blade Runner—“all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain”—anchor the film’s meditation on impermanence. Through grainy textures and a soundscape that shifts from playful chatter to lingering silence, the...

Few sci-fi films have a grip on pop culture quite like Ridley Scott’sBlade Runner. The 1982 adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s iconic novel Do You Dream of Electric Sheep? starring Harrison Ford(Indiana Jones) defined the genre in the '80s. Over the last 40 plus years, its fanbase and legacy have only grown. This was with the help of the 2017 sequel being one of the best films of the last decade. Now, before the world expands in its next iteration on the small screen, the original Blade Runner is getting a new futuristic 4K edition.
The latest 4K steelbook will include “The Final Cut” of Blade Runner, which saw extended scenes added to the theatrical release. This is seen by Scott and many fans as the definitive version of the film. This edition will presumably feature all the same special features as past 4K releases of the film and...

Blade Runner: Time To Live was reportedly set to be a major game release, but even before it’s announced, it’s been cancelled.
If you think that it’s impossible to mourn the loss of something that you never had, you’re clearly haven’t found your way to Ridley Scott’s 1982 cyberpunk noir classic, Blade Runner. The film starred Harrison Ford as a weary and cynical cop tasked with tracking down and killing synthetic beings. Beings who would cling to the idea of life, even if – by our own human definition – ‘life’ was something they didn’t, and couldn’t, possess.
There’s a grim irony to this story then that like the story’s ‘replicants’, we find ourselves lamenting the loss of something we never even possessed, a new videogame that would have expanded the Blade Runner mythos.
According to Insider Gaming, the project was named Blade Runner: Time To Live,...

Warner Bros. threw the film industry a curveball when it abruptly shut down pre-production on Luca Guadagnino's "Sgt. Rock." The DC Studios production carried a $70 million budget (reasonable for a studio war flick based on a comic book), had attracted a killer cast that included Colin Farrell (who took over the role from Daniel Craig) and Mike Faist and David Jonsson, and was set to shoot this summer. Some felt it was an odd choice for Guadagnino, but he's made a career out of odd choices. I still don't know if I like his earth-tone remake of Dario Argento's "Suspiria," but I respect the audacity. To his maverick credit, Guadagnino's "Sgt. Rock," which got greenlit primarily because DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran flipped for "Challenger" writer Justin Kuritzkes' screenplay, almost certainly wouldn't have been the "Sgt. Rock" movie I've been clamoring for since the late 1980s.

There are some performances you stumble upon like a forgotten $20 in your jeans: unexpected, thrilling, and mildly unnerving. For many of us, that was Harrison Ford in What Lies Beneath. We went in expecting good ol’ Han Solo energy or Indy cracking whips and wisecracks. Instead? We got Cold. Calculated. Creepy. And needless to say, we were weirdly impressed!
Ford, the cinematic sweetheart of space smugglers and fedora-sporting archaeologists, is the last guy you’d expect to be gaslighting his wife while hiding a dead body. But here we are. What Lies Beneath isn’t just your typical ghost story. This masterpiece, helmed by Robert Zemeckis, flips the script on Ford’s heroic legacy, with Michelle Pfeiffer’s haunting performance as his wife. And boy, does it lean into the “never judge a book by its ruggedly handsome, salt-and-pepper-haired cover” lesson.

You can ask a Blade Runner fan what was so special about it, and within an instant, they will reply using just a few words: the lore, the action, stunning visuals, and the protagonists’ (relatable) existential crisis. And if you’ve watched the Blade Runner films, you would immediately agree how much this holds true.
And so, when rumors started to surface that the developers of Until Dawn would be making a Blade Runner game, fans got all hyped up. The game was expected to be a third-person, story-driven action-adventure titled Blade Runner: Time to Live.
The ambitious project was scheduled for a September 2027 release, with pre-production reportedly already complete. So naturally, the question arises – what happened to the game and why?

Science fiction is one of the most popular genres out there, but it takes a lot of effort and thought to get right. Sci-fi is not just about aliens and spaceships; it is about what science can do to address the current problems of the world, and whether it will solve those issues or worsen them. There is a reason speculative fiction like that always stands apart.
While ‘80s films like Blade Runner and Terminator wondered about the future of humanity, Hollywood seemed to pivot to a more blockbuster-y treatment for these films. Some of them asked profound questions, but also had fun with it. There is a reason the following list of films is extremely popular and influential, as their inspirations can be seen even today.
Here are the ten most influential sci-fi films of the 1990s.

[This story contains major spoilers from the season finale of Dope Thief, “Innocent People.”]
Dope Thief, the Apple TV+ limited series from Ridley Scott and Peter Craig, has wrapped its eight-episode run.
Adapted from Dennis Tafoya’s 2009 debut novel, the series followed self-appointed leader Ray (Brian Tyree Henry, also an executive producer) and his friend Manny (Wagner Moura), with whom he is trauma-bonded with while incarcerated. With limited options to generate money, Ray has the pair pose as DEA agents to shake down small-time drug dealers. They hit a life-threatening snag, however, when a score on bad intel results in an anonymous drug kingpin being determined to kill them. Even worse, the real DEA undercover agent Mina (Marin Ireland) who, unknown to Ray and Manny, survived the attack, is helping the investigation while barely holding on to life. With that information, the DEA is convinced that Ray, especially, is also a kingpin, so Ray and Manny must escape them, too.

Oof. Beginnings of months are difficult in terms of how many titles on any streaming service we are forced to say goodbye to. Each month, Netflix brings in many new items, meaning some older ones have to leave. Some months are worse than others.
May isn't worse than other months unless you are a fan of a couple of franchises. If you love Spider-Man, we have bad news for you. If you are addicted to watching Thomas & Friends, we have more bad news.
Perhaps the worst part is that a lot of comedies are saying goodbye. Wedding Crashers, the Fockers films, and a couple of the Friday flicks are going away. So are some Oscar-worthy films, such as Schindler's List and Whiplash.
A large number of titles are leaving Netflix this week (April 26 through May 2)
The weird 1978 version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is also leaving.

The 16th annual TCM Classic Film Festival gets underway Thursday night in Hollywood with a 45th anniversary screening at the Chinese Imax Theatre of the acclaimed second Star Wars feature, 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, with creator George Lucas on stage to talk about it. It certainly fits in with this year’s theme, “Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film,” though it is hard to wrap my head around the fact that this movie is now old enough to fit snugly in with so many of the classic titles TCM regularly features on their channel and at this festival, which brings them back in all their glory to the big screen.
The heavy programming of more contemporary box office hits this year does provide some irony to the title of one of the festival’s panels happening Sunday, “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To,” featuring among others Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman.

Gladiator II was one of the biggest box office disappointments of 2024. Although the film earned over $460 million at the global box office, it still boasts an estimated budget of around $250 million and a marketing budget of around $100 million, which left its break-even point at more than $600 million by most estimates. After it wrapped up its theatrical run, Gladiator 2 premiered on Paramount+, where it had been streaming exclusively for the last few months. While it is still streaming on Paramount+, it also recently landed on a new streamer. Gladiator 2 debuted on Prime Video yesterday, and the film wasted no time climbing to the #1 spot on the streamer’s charts. It earned scores of 70% from critics and 82% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rick and Morty Season Eight will premiere on May 25th, which gives us ample time to wildly speculate on the future of high-concept sci-fi rigamarole.
It’s been 16 months since the most recent episode of Rick and Morty aired, and although the wait has been a long one, at least this off-season was decidedly less eventful than the last one when the show’s most toxic fans melted down over the removal of a certain disgraced co-creator. Since we last saw Rick and Morty in the main series, we suffered through Rick and Morty: The Anime, Dan Harmon released absolutely zero promising updates on The Community Movie and both Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden enjoyed their quiet break between recording sessions with minimal hate mail.
Then, this morning, Adult Swim released the newest official trailer for Rick and Morty Season Eight, a teaser that’s filled with hints and reveals for upcoming episode plot lines.

Clint Eastwood turned 52 in 1982, but, as far as American moviegoers were concerned, he'd only been a movie star for 15 years (which is when all three chapters of the "Dollars Trilogy" were theatrically released in the United States). And though his "Dirty Harry" movies were viewed as politically conservative, he was still largely viewed as a revolutionary figure in film. His Westerns were revisionist and, for the time, incredibly violent; his cop flicks were unapologetically R-rated and, with "Every Which Way But Loose" and "Any Which Way You Can," he had every kid in the country wishing they could have a beer-swilling, bird-flipping orangutan as their best friend.
Throughout his career, Clint Eastwood has taken note of what kinds of movies are connecting with viewers and sought to place his own personal spin on them. He responded to the buddy-cop phenomenon of the 1980s with the the big-budget quasi-spoof "The Rookie...

Alex Garland may have introduced himself as a director with Annihilation, but it was 2014's Ex Machina that helped to cement him as a great sci-fi writer/director. Starring Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, and Sonoya Mizuno, the film follows Caleb, a young developer who is sent to his boss' idyllic villa to perform a Turing Test on his newest creation, a humanoid android named Ava. The film is as profound as it is mind-melting, which has led many fans to come up with their own theories online. Unfortunately, the most popular theory circulating among fans has just been denied by the director.
Alex Garland recently sat down with GQ to look back on his past movies, while promoting his new film Warfare. Whilst on the topic of Ex Machina, where the director explained the idea behind the film and his personal casting process, Garland was also asked to clarify a popular fan theory.

Clint Eastwood may have retired from directing after Juror No.2, but he leaves behind a lasting legacy that consists of riveting dramas that span genres. Eastwood has been a multiple Oscar-winner, but he won his first for Best Director with the Western drama Unforgiven, which also won Best Picture and got him a Best Actor nomination.
Eastwood’s drama on justice and morality was written by David Webb Peoples. The writer mentioned that the film was roughly the same as the script, and no rewrites were demanded from the Gran Torino star. However, the filmmaker was not the first to get his hands on the script, as almost a decade earlier, Francis Ford Coppola had optioned the rights for it.

We’ve recently looked at the of Michael Crichton’s best works and it got me thinking about some of the other heavy hitting sci-fi writers. One of the best who also happens to have quite a few adaptations to his name is Philip K. Dick. If you aren’t a big reader, then the titles We Can Remember It For You Wholesale and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep may not ring a bell, but I’m sure that Total Recall and Blade Runner are right up this audience’s alley. You guys seemed to really enjoy the breakdowns on Jurassic Park, Congo, and Sphere so lets take a look at one of the biggest action movies of 1990 and its source material and unpack Total Recall. No, not the remake. Never the remake for that one. Pull that tracker out of your nostril as we find out what happened to this adaptation.

The best sci-fi movies usually mirror some aspect of our contemporary world. "Dune" did it with its grim predictions of ecological warfare and the folly of humanity pinning its hopes on some messiah, "Blade Runner" exposed us to a dystopian technocratic future that continues to feel like it could easily become a reality, and the "Terminator" movies have basically come to represent the popular understanding of AI and the technological singularity. But what if a movie really drove the point home with an on-the-nose approach that actually blended real-world footage with fictionalized scenes set in a dystopian future designed to represent the outcome of today's political and social unrest? Apparently, such a thing would become a streaming hit.
The dystopian landscape of the streaming most-watched charts are enough to convince anyone we're already living in a nightmare future, but depending on how you feel about Asif Kapadia's "2073," there...

The Apple TV+ comedy “The Studio” has been justly lauded for getting virtually every detail of how Hollywood’s movers and shakers live and work exactly right, but the show’s accuracy goes beyond behavior. One of the great pleasures of the series week after week is observing the sense of Hollywood history that seeps into every aspect of the visual design. Directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are avid movie enthusiasts, and it’s clear that the show’s props, locations, and decor are all carefully chosen to tell the story not only of the series’ particular characters but of an industry that’s now over 100 years old.
Nowhere is this attention to detail more felt than in the production design of the studio itself, which is intended to emulate great legacy companies like Paramount and Warner Bros., the latter of which stands in for the series’ fictional Continental Studios in exterior scenes.

If you’re sunk in a swamp of solitude, there are movies.
If you’re drowned in the deluge of chaos, there are movies.
If you’re drenched in a drizzle of nostalgia, there are movies.
If you’re struck by the lightning of love, there are movies.
If you’re threatened by a downpour of death, there are movies.
If you’re at home on a rainy day, there are movies.
The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to watch a movie. Some of the greatest films in cinematic history owe their greatness to the presence of rain. Rain in cinema is often said to be the symbol of nostalgia, solitude, chaos, love, rejection, death, decay, and so on. But are not some things just simply what they are and nothing more? In the end, rain is just rain, water returning to its origin. The...

A lawsuit by Blade Runner 2049 production company Alcon Entertainment against Tesla and Warner Bros over the use of images from the film at a promotional event can proceed, a federal judge has ruled.
The scope of the complaint, however, was narrowed in a ruling late Monday by Judge George Wu in the U.S. District Court of Central California. Wu sided with the defendants by dismissing several of Alcon’s claims and ordering the narrower complaint to go to mediation. Still pending is Alcon’s charge of copyright infringement, which stems from the use of images from the sci-fi sequel starring Ryan Gosling to train AI tools involved in generating materials for Tesla.
Alcon sued Warner Bros and Tesla last October after the automaker’s “We Robot” event on the Warners lot in Burbank, insisting that the companies had ignored its refusal of a request to incorporate the film’s visuals.

A federal judge has narrowed the scope of a lawsuit from a production company for Blade Runner 2049 accusing Tesla of feeding images from the movie into an artificial intelligence image generator to create unlicensed promotional materials and Warner Bros. Discovery of facilitating the partnership.
U.S. District Judge George Wu on Monday dismissed allegations that Alcon Entertainment’s trademarks were violated while allowing some copyright claims to proceed.
Tesla’s partnership with Wbd to promote its robotaxi at a glitzy unveiling, which was done from a studio lot, last year sparked the lawsuit. At the presentation, Elon Musk reached the stage in what he called a “cybercab” before showing an image of a male figure wearing a trench coat who’s surveying the abandoned ruins of a city bathed in a misty, orange light. In 2013, as we were still getting used to smartphones transforming into extensions of our hands and minds, director Spike Jonze landed on us a film that wasn’t just ahead of its time but was also actively predicting the future of our digital reality. “Her” (2013) wasn’t merely science-fiction; it was techno-romance riddled with prophecy.
The film’s biggest feat wasn’t in its spectacular visuals but how it proved to be a subtle, skillful examination of the lines between intimacy and technology and how those lines sometimes blur beyond recognition. In today’s social landscape, where AI chatbots and assistants are increasingly becoming an integral part of our lives, Jonze’s “Her” demands revisiting not just as a piece of cinema but also as a clear mirror to our technological present. What makes this film momentous, is Jonze’s utilization of all the cinematic tools at his disposal, necessary...

Disney truly brought its A-game with the new reveal for Tron: Ares. The trailer revealed a dark, neon-lit, cyberpunk thriller that ups the ante by bringing Programs into the world of the Users with Jared Leto and Jeff Bridges leading the charge.
That's cool and all, but what does this mean for fans who might not be as familiar with the original '80s cult classic? Tron has always been a visual feast, and it's garnered a sizable following worthy of three movies and a TV series. But how does this all fit together?
Welcoming new players to the world of Tron
Unless you've already seen at least the first film, you probably don't know who/what Programs, Users, Bits, or the McP are, and that's okay. To say that Tron isn't a bit complicated would be untrue, but it's one of Disney's richest stories with tons of impressive lore.

Ridley Scott’s made some legendary films, but even the best directors have their regrets. Kingdom of Heaven was supposed to be an epic masterpiece, yet one major decision still haunts him. Decades later, he can’t shake the feeling that he messed up – big time.
The swords clashed, the battles raged, but behind the scenes, Scott’s biggest fight was with himself. He knew he had made the wrong call, and audiences weren’t shy about letting him know.

It’s been quite some years since I first watched Space Precinct, Gerry Anderson’s 1994 sci-fi police series, and I have to say – revisiting it today – it’s a fascinating piece of television history. While Anderson is best known for his classic puppet-based series like Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet, Space Precinct took a different approach, blending live-action with animatronics and prosthetics to create a futuristic police procedural. It may not have been a massive success at the time (though I remember the hype for the show both on TV and in magazines like the all-time classic TV Zone being Huge!) but looking back, it’s a unique and enjoyable show that blends crime drama with sci-fi adventure in a way that few other series have attempted.

Match #1: Jay White def. Kevin Knight The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:
White and Knight went move for move during the opening minutes of the match. Jay White chopped at Kevin after being brought down by Kevin’s hurracanrana. Jay White grounded Kevin with a dragon screw leg whip. White followed up with a brain buster for a near fall. Jay White punished Knight with a barrage of chops. Kevin rallied back with a high dropkick, going into orbit! Kevin hit the UFO splash and then connected with a thrust kick. Kevin Knight shoved his way out of the Blade Runner. Jay White ducked a lariat and countered with a flatliner.

One of the writers onCaptain America: Brave New World is pushing back against some of the negative reviews the movie has received. Captain America: Brave New World opened in theaters on Feb. 14, 2025 and was certainly not the big start to 2025 that Marvel Studios was likely hoping for, as it garnered a 48% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes — making it only the third MCU film to get a rotten rating alongside 2021's Eternals (47%) and 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (46%). For what it's worth, the audience's reaction was mixed with positivity.

Edwards is one of five credited screenwriters on the fourth Captain America movie, and also has a story by credit in the film. While Lazarus creator Shinichiro Watanabe has had a prolific career in anime, from original works like Samurai Champloo and Carole and Tuesday as well as making his mark on well-known franchises like Blade Runner; he is perhaps still best known for his seminal 1998 masterpiece Cowboy Bebop. For 26 episodes and a theatrical film, the series enthralled fans with its slick action, lovable characters, and infectiously catchy jazz soundtrack.
Now, decades later, Watanabe returns to the Adult Swim network that made Bebop famous in the West with Lazarus. This original series aims to tell a new, more grounded, story that nevertheless evokes some of the same feelings and atmosphere that make Watanabe’s work, Bebop included, so beloved. So far, I would say he and his team have largely succeeded; though please bear in mind that this only applies to the first five episodes, as that was what was made available to me at time of writing.

Netflix‘s additions to its platform this month include a pair of underrated, wildly different gems from last year and a few bona fide film classics. Fortunately, the streamer’s March titles are a diverse bunch, too, which means that whether you’re in the mood for an entertaining thriller or a meditative drama, you will not have to look far for something to watch. You certainly can’t go wrong with any of the following seven films.
Here are TheWrap’s picks for the best new-to-Netflix movies streaming on the platform in March.
“Sicario” (Lionsgate) “Sicario” (2015)
Directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, “Sicario” is a propulsive, nerve-wracking thriller about a naive FBI agent (Emily Blunt) who is recruited by a CIA officer (Josh Brolin) to join a joint task force assigned to hunt down the head of a ruthless drug cartel. 1982 gave birth to some of the most beloved and successful science fiction films to ever grace the big screen. Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Tron, and Blade Runner all debuted that same summer, but none of them were near as haunting or frightening as director John Carpenter’s must-see The Thing. Die-hard fans of the sci-fi horror classic and those who’ve never seen the exceptional flick will have their chance to visit the bitter-cold confines of Antarctica all over again when The Thing and its inferior prequel of the same name both begin streaming for free April Fools’ Day on Tubi.

Time Travel is Dangerous centers around friends Ruth and Megan who run a vintage shop in Muswell Hill. When they stumble across a time machine, it occurs to them that stock is much cheaper if they ‘borrow’ from the past – well, it’s free. They don’t want to change history, or rob banks, they just want to find a nice Victorian lamp or an authentic 80s bum bag without getting sucked into the hellish time-space vortex that is “the Unreason”. The thing is, Time Travel Is Dangerous.

To make an all-time-great album, you don’t play it safe. Ziggy Stardust, for instance, is a far-out space oddity. Modern masterworks like The ArchAndroid or Art Angels mash genres at will, inventing sounds you’ve never heard before. While Geremy Jasper’s original rock-opera movie musical O’Dessa fails in its attempt at greatness, it at least understands that grasping towards eternity means taking an almighty leap.
You’d be hard-pressed to say you’ve seen anything quite like O’Dessa before. Jasper’s long-awaited follow-up to Sundance favourite Patti Cake$ is a truly oddball brew – a banjo-twanging alt-universe odyssey through a gaudy, dystopian world, where psychedelic ooze (‘plazma’) bubbles under the soil and Murray Bartlett’s cult leader Plutonovich has enslaved the populus through mindless entertainment. Enter Sadie Sink’s O’Dessa, possibly the fabled ‘Seventh Son’, on a ramblin’ quest that’ll lead her to true love and musical liberation.

Wherever you go, there you are. That iconic line has become a pop culture mainstay thanks to one of the strangest movies of the 80s, Buckaroo Banzai or, as it is formally titled, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. This 1984 science fiction movie has been a cult classic for four decades and remains a fan favorite thanks to its virtually unexplainable plot. Part comedy, part action, part scifi, part martial arts, part musical, part western, part satire and part of a franchise that never came to be, Buckaroo Banzai may be the single most bizarre movie we have ever covered for this series.
A box office bomb when it was released, grossing only six million against a seventeen million dollar budget, Buckaroo Banzai holds a decent 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics sum it up succinctly as “violating every rule of storytelling and narrative structure in creating...

100 Years, a film directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring John Malkovich, is set to release on November 18, 2115. This isn’t a prank or a lost film – although it could be reduced to a marketing gimmick. It’s a completed movie that’s been securely locked away in a high-tech, bulletproof vault. The vault is programmed to open automatically in 2115, making sure that no one can access it until its designated premiere date.
