Macaulay Culkin Asks Investigation Discovery to “Take It Easy” on Child Stars
Image
As a former child star himself, Macaulay Culkin gets it.

The actor, who rose to fame at 10 years old, playing Kevin in the holiday classic films Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has a message for those making documentaries about child actors in Hollywood.

“Dear ID, Please take it easy on the kiddos. We’ve all been through the wringer. No one wants to feel exploited. Don’t pile on. Love, Macaulay Culkin,” he wrote on Instagram Monday, alongside a photo of Investigation Discovery’s logo.

Culkin’s post was seemingly referring to the network’s Hollywood Demons docuseries’ second episode, titled “Child Stars Gone Violent,” which aired Monday night. The show looks to “uncover the shocking stories of celebrities’ lives. Some rise to fame only to fall from stardom, while others reveal fame’s tragic, dark side in ways one could never imagine,” according to its description,...

Justine Bateman Wants to “Give a Book of Matches” to the Tech Companies So They Can Burn Down Hollywood
Image
When it comes to Hollywood’s AI future, few have been more vocal — or critical — than Justine Bateman.

Armed with a computer science degree from UCLA, the veteran actor-filmmaker has sounded an alarm about the dangers of replacing human work with machine fabrication. She became a lead voice during the strikes when she advised SAG-AFTRA on the issue and was a public face of the AI-skeptic movement on the WGA picket line.

Bateman is the founder of Credo 23, a two-year-old organization that believes Generative AI “will destroy the structure of the film business” and has set as its goal “making very human, very raw, very real films/series that respect the process of filmmaking.”

As Hollywood begins to cautiously dance with text-to-video tools like OpenAI’s Sora and as the company makes Miyazaki-esque images available (to no small furor), Bateman is renewing her call. The Family Ties star and Violet...

Image
The beginning of the (second) end has finally begun, with the seventh and final season of the Roseanne spin-off series, The Conners, celebrating its arrival on Wednesday night. Everyone’s favorite middle-class American family is back, but this season won’t be like the rest. 35 Years Ago, A Box Office Bomb Spawned A Beloved Monster Movie Franchise
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"When my agent called me up and said 'giant worms underground' I was like, 'Oh my God. My career is in the toilet.'" Those are the words of Kevin Bacon, star of "Tremors," reflecting on his role in the now-beloved monster movie in the 2020 documentary "Making Perfection." While that is a wild pitch and, admittedly, the movie was not a big hit in its day, it by no means wound up in the toilet. On the contrary, it kickstarted one of the most surprisingly enduring franchises in the genre landscape. Sometimes, big things have humble beginnings.

This journey begins with screenwriters S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who met in college and quickly became writing partners. They broke out in Hollywood with...

‘Back in Action’ Review: Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz in a Domestic Spy Caper as Generic as Its Title
Image
In “Back in Action,” a domestic spy caper as generic as its title, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, as CIA operatives who’ve become a romantic couple, attend a kids’ birthday party thrown by a cyberterrorist from Belarus whose safe they’re planning to break into. But their identities are unmasked in about five minutes. They have to fight their way out of the criminal’s mansion, which they do in an extended sequence of bone-breaking face-offs, all accompanied by Frank Sinatra singing “L.O.V.E.” (“L…is for the way you look… at me…”). The song, as it’s used here, lays on the ironic jauntiness with a trowel. It’s the film’s way of saying: Nothing’s at stake, don’t take it seriously, turn off your brain and sink into the warm bath of this Netflix product-of the-week (because that’s all it’s here for).

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Slammed For ‘Photo Op Disaster Tourism’ For L.A. Fire Relief Efforts
Image
Justine Bateman, star of Family Ties, has blasted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for their supposedly relief efforts for the L.A. wildfires.

On Friday, Fox 11 Los Angeles showed Harry and Markle at an evacuation center in Pasadena handing out food and other supplies to victims of the fire.

Fox reported that Markle and Harry had donated a variety of necessities to the affected community and additionally opened up their house to friends and family who lost their homes or were forced to evacuate.

Despite their philanthropy, Bateman, who lives in Hollywood Hills, blasted Harry and Markle for their “photo opp” at the evacuation center.

In a post to X, Bateman wrote, “Meghan Markle and Harry are no better than ambulance chasers. What a repulsive “photo op” they achieved.”

'Back to the Future Part II' Made a Wild Choice in Its Portrayal of Michael Jackson
Image
Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future trilogy is pure 1980s nostalgia. The first film came out in 1985 during the height of Michael J. Fox's fame as Alex P. Keaton on the very popular TV series Family Ties. It was by far the biggest box office draw of the year and led to two sequels filmed at the same time: 1989's Back to the Future Part II and 1990's Back to the Future Part III. If you're of a certain age, you can't watch those movies and not be transported back to your childhood. From the look of the DeLorean, Marty McFly's truck, as well as the Pepsi tie-ins, it's truly nostalgia overload. In Back to the Future Part II, it's Marty himself who gets to experience the nostalgia. He might be thirty years in the future this time, but when he walks into the Cafe 80s, it's almost like he's back home.

Bill Maher Remembers All of His Failed Sitcoms
Image
When Bill Maher was a young stand-up comic, he wasn’t looking to get into sitcoms. “But when I started,” he told Dana Carvey and David Spade on the latest Fly on the Wall podcast, “the template was, well, you get on The Tonight Show, you do your little six minutes, little monkey goes out there and makes people laugh. Good clean material. And then you get a sitcom like Robin Williams did and Roseanne and Freddie Prince and Tim Allen.”

Spoiler alert: Maher did not turn into Robin Williams or Roseanne. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t get his opportunities. He told Carvey and Spade about his shots at sitcom stardom that fizzled shortly after liftoff.

“I did my four or five Tonight Shows, and I got on a big show, a sitcom on NBC that was on after Family Ties,” he remembered. “It was a...

President Joe Biden is concluding his time in office by naming his last round of Presidential Medal of Freedom honorees, and they include two iconic Hollywood names. Entertainment Weekly reports that two-time Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington and five-time Emmy-winner Michael J. Fox are among this year’s Medal of Freedom recipients. Nineteen people in total are included in this year’s honor.

The award is the nation’s highest civilian honor. It is presented to people who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”

The White House released a statement regarding the honorees that read: “President Biden believes great leaders keep the faith, give everyone a fair shot, and put decency above all else. These 19 Americans are great leaders because they are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.

Why Back To The Future Recast Eric Stoltz As Marty McFly
Image
Back to the Future is now a classic of the 1980s and Michael J. Fox is best remembered for his role as Marty McFly, which he got after Eric Stoltz was fired from the movie. The 1980s is home to many classic movies across different genres, and in the worlds of sci-fi and comedy, Back to the Future is a clear favorite. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Back to the Future introduces the world to teenager Marty McFly and his friend Emmett “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd), an eccentric scientist working on a very important project.

Turns out that Doc has built a time machine with a modified DeLorean and powered by plutonium, which gets him into major trouble. When the terrorists Doc stole the plutonium from arrive and kill him, Marty panics and uses the DeLorean to escape, but it takes him back to 1955. Marty meets his parents, who are his age,...

Justine Bateman Says Cancel Culture Has Become “F***ing Unbearable”
Image
Justine Bateman said this week that the cancel culture connected to President Donald Trump’s 2016 victory and beyond has become “fucking unbearable.”

“I don’t remember a time in my career where there was an absence of criticism of me,” Bateman told Megyn Kelly during a prerecorded interview that will appear on SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show on Thursday. “There’s always been somebody, at least one person, and I say that sarcastically, like more than one person, who’s got a problem with me or something about my presence pushes their buttons or they don’t like that I haven’t done anything to my face.”

In November, after Trump’s recent victory, she wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that she was “decompressing from walking on eggshells for the past four years.”

To Kelly, she elaborated on the statement, saying she was glad the election ended “that mob...

What Happened To The Cast Of 1990's Kindergarten Cop?
Image
"Kindergarten Cop" is the quintessential 90s movie. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, the defining action star of the era, in a role few thought he could pull off, and it's directed by one of the most prolific filmmakers of the decade. The film also features a cast of young actors just before they went on to achieve major success. Now, we're looking back at the talent involved in "Ghostbusters" director Ivan Reitman's popular 1990 comedy to find out what they're up to these days, mainly because we love reminding ourselves just how old we are.

For those unaware, "Kindergarten Cop" follows Detective John Kimble (Arnold) as he goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher to bust a dangerous criminal. Like "Twins," Reitman's previous collaboration with Arnold, "Kindergarten Cop" blends comedy with drama, plus a hefty dose of surprisingly violent action, resulting in the perfect movie to show kids of all ages in...

Dream or Delusion? How TV Shapes Our Vision of the American Dream
Image
The American Dream has always been a cornerstone of the nation’s identity, a promise that hard work and perseverance can lead to success and prosperity.

As both a mirror and molder of culture, television has long been fascinated with this ideal.

From gleaming sitcom suburbs to gritty dramas, TV’s portrayal of the American Dream has evolved, reflecting shifting attitudes about what success means — and whether it’s even attainable.

(ABC/Screenshot)

But is the dream TV portrayed as a beacon of hope or an illusion?

By examining how television has celebrated, questioned, and even deconstructed this narrative, we can better understand its role in shaping — and challenging — our aspirations.

Early Optimism: TV’s Golden Vision of the American Dream

In the early days of television, the American Dream was portrayed as a universally achievable goal.

Idyllic pictures of suburban life, with nuclear families thriving in neatly manicured neighborhoods,...

Michael J. Fox & Christopher Lloyd's Sitcom Reunion Is The Closest We'll Get To Back To The Future 4
Image
Michael J. Foxs on-screen reunion with Christopher Lloyd on the sitcom Spin City is probably the closest theyll ever get to reprising their roles as Doc Brown and Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part IV. Before he was best known for playing Marty on the big screen, Fox was already sitcom royalty for his iconic role as Alex P. Keaton in the hit show Family Ties. The series ran for seven seasons between 1982 and 1989 and earned Fox three consecutive Emmys.

In 1996, Fox reunited with Family Ties creator Gary David Goldberg to work on another long-running sitcom. Spin City takes place in a fictionalized version of the New York City mayors office and stars Fox as Mike Flaherty, the Deputy Mayor of New York. Fox and Lloyd shared the screen once more when Lloyd guest-starred in a classic episode of Spin City. Now, its looking like that reunion will...

Image
T’is the season — for male strippers? Yes, actually. Yes indeed.

So, to help save it, she organizes a Christmas-themed male revue to pull in ticket sales.

The movie features a lot of familiar faces, but perhaps some new ones for you too. So, we’ve got you covered.

Here are all the major players in “The Merry Gentlemen.”

The Reason Your Agent Isn’t Calling You Back? Pickleball

If you happened to be passing through Calabasas and heard a loud “twocking” sound, we can explain. On Nov. 16, a slew of Hollywood’s most powerful players (and, in this case, we’re using the word literally) assembled on the courts of the Calabasas Pickleball Club for the Entertainment Pickleball League’s championship tourney. Although they began just a few months ago, Epl’s games are quickly shaping up to be Hollywood’s biggest draw this side of the Academy Gala, with agents and execs from just about every entertainment company forming squads — most with pun-filled names like Disney’s Monster Dinks, NBCUni’s Dis-Pickleball Me and CAA’s Dill Makers — to participate. “We started with four teams,” says Zee Batal, the TV producer who launched the league in late

September with reality TV showrunner Erica Hanson. “Now we have eight.

9 Underrated '80s Sitcoms That Still Hold Up
Image
Some of the most popular sitcoms of all time came out of the eighties. Shows like M.A.S.H., Cheers, The Cosby Show and Family Ties won accolades and dominated the ratings. Even Seinfeld started in the eighties. Unfortunately, this left room for plenty of other sitcoms of the era to slip through the cracks.

Decades after those well-known classic sitcoms ruled the airwaves, some of the shows that didnt warrant as much attention at the time still hold up, and some are even more relevant now than when they first aired. There are plenty of great old-school laughs to be found; audiences just need to know where to look.

How Michael J. Fox Uses His Dark Sense of Humor to Cope With Parkinson's Challenges
Image
Legendary actor Michael J. Fox has shown off his sense of humor in countless TV shows and movies over the years, and now he is talking about how his humor is carrying him through life with Parkinsons disease. Per People, at the Michael J. Fox Foundations annual A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinsons gala on Nov. 16, the Back to the Future star said he hangs on to his dark sense of humor.

He said, however, that sometimes preserving that sense of humor is hard for me, but, the five-time Emmy-award-winning actor added, I gotta keep it intact. Fox said he likes having a darker sense of humor during hard times because it can sometimes be a way to break the ice during conversations that may otherwise be hard.

10 Movies That Had To Stop Production Due To A Major Recasting
Image
Casting an important movie role is never easy, and sometimes the process of finding the best actor for a given role continues even after production or filming has officially begun. The entertainment industry can often be a turbulent one, with the typical professional rules for hiring and firing often being thrown out the window in favor of last-minute changes. Some of the most iconic movie castings ever have often been the result of last-minute changes to the call sheet that only come into play long after the first scene has been shot.

There are many reasons why a film set might make the decision to recast a major character halfway through production. In some cases, things like scheduling conflicts create logistical nightmares that ultimately aren't worth it, but a director's artistic vision can sometimes clash with the final performance given by a previously chosen actor. Tragically, unforeseeable events like the...

Carl Sagan Said ‘Back to the Future’ Was Best Time-Travel Movie
Image
What’s the best time-travel movie of all time? According to astrophysicist Carl Sagan, it’s not the thoughtful sci-fi approaches of Time After Time, Looper or Edge of Tomorrow. The best compliment Robert Zemeckis ever got was when the famed cosmologist bestowed that honor on his comedy, Back to the Future.

Sagan told Zemeckis that the Michael J. Fox movie featured the best time-travel scientific theory he’d seen in a movie. “I didn’t tell him I took it from H.G. Wells,” the director confessed to Bill Maher on a recent Club Random podcast.

“It’s funny to watch a movie about time travel when you are now 40 years past when the movie was made,” Maher observed about jokes that were funny in 1985 about traveling to 1955. “You know, ‘If you know everything about the future, who is president in 1985?’ Ronald Reagan. ‘Yeah, right. And I’ll bet Jerry Lewis is vice president.
