The Best New Blu-ray and 4K Releases This May
Image
Physical media culture is alive and thriving thanks to the home video tastemakers hailing everywhere from The Criterion Collection to Kino Lorber and the Warner Archive Collection. Each month, IndieWire highlights the best recent and upcoming Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K releases for cinephiles to own now — and to bring ballast and permanence to your moviegoing at a time when streaming windows on classic movies close just as soon as they open.

The summer movie season is around the corner, though Ryan Coogler’s box-office wonderment “Sinners” has certainly taken a headstart bite out of it. It’s already grossed $168 million worldwide and is still climbing, though “Thunderbolts*” — receiving more praise than usual for recent Marvel titles — looks to dethrone it as the weekend’s top film.

That said, if you’re looking to not leave your sofa this month or are fatigued by scrolling through streaming offerings, there are some...

This 1981 Horror Film Is More Traumatizing Than Any of ‘The Conjuring’ Franchise Movies
Image
Amidst diminishing box-office returns in the blockbuster landscape, certain studios have been leaning hard toward run-of-the-mill horrors, made on a modest budget, and are often quick to recoup their money. This, in turn, has contributed to an overabundance of critically panned horrors, filled with cheap scares that have been the norm since The Conjuring‘s success.

This isn’t to say there haven’t been some absolute bangers in recent years, as in addition to Sinners‘ triumph at the box office, a remake of one 1981 classic remains in work, which to this day can give viewers nightmares.

Possession‘s psychological dread and body horror can make for a tough watch Possession | Credit: Gaumont

The ’80s were a significant era for horror, ranging from slashers to psychological horrors. Even though not every release from that era has translated well into modern times, this is certainly not the case with Possession. Instead...

Indonesian remake of Possession, Possession: Kerasukan, is now on Netflix
Andrzej Zulawski
Director Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 horror film Possession is so unique, it’s difficult to imagine anyone even attempting to remake it. The mind-bending creature feature was a reflection of the issues Żuławski was dealing with at the time; his marriage had ended in a devastating divorce, he was driven out of his home country of Poland because the Communist government didn’t approve of his filmmaking endeavors, and Possession was his way of purging dark emotions. It’s not something that can be replicated – but Parker Finn, the writer/director of Smile and the upcoming Smile 2, has an approach to the material that he wants to share with the world. It was announced earlier this year that Finn will be writing and directing a Possession remake, with Robert Pattinson producing through his company Icki Eneo Arlo. (Whether or not Pattinson takes an acting role in the film will depend...

‘Possession: Kerasukan’ – Netflix Quietly Released an Indonesian Remake of 1981’s ‘Possession’
Image
Fans of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror movie Possession weren’t exactly thrilled to learn that a remake is on the way from Paramount and Smile filmmaker Parker Finn, but director Razka Robby Ertanto beat the remake to the punch with Possession: Kerasukan.

The loose Indonesian remake of the cult horror film has quietly been available to stream on Netflix for months.

The synopsis reads the same, “Returning from military duty, Faris is shocked to learn that his wife wants a divorce. He decides to investigate and discovers a sinister secret.”

Żuławski’s film recently received a new 4K restoration, “Banned upon release in 1981, Żuławski’s stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Sam Neill) returns to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) insistent on a divorce. As Anna’s frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming,...

The Babadook Ending Explained: The Monster In The Basement Is A Metaphor
Image
Parenthood can be really tough. We all know that from the get-go when we're starting a family, but no amount of wisdom or cautionary tales can quite prepare you for how challenging it is when baby finally arrives. Your whole world changes, and I say that from the perspective of a father who went out to work and lived a semi-normal life while my partner was at home with our two kids when they were very little. I can only imagine just how difficult it was for her at times, especially in the early years when they needed 100% of her attention.

Then you get to watch them grow up and dream that they will become good people who are happy and successful in all they do. You have a big part to play in helping achieve that and hope it will be enough. But what if it doesn't work out?...

Sarah Michelle Gellar to Star in 'Bad Summer People' TV Series Adaptation
Image
Sarah Michelle Gellar has lined up her next TV role, and it's set in a story that book lovers may be familiar with. According to Deadline, the Cruel Intentions actress has been tapped to star in and executive produce Bad Summer People, a small-screen adaptation of Emma Rosenblum's bestselling debut novel, which has previously drawn comparisons to the critically acclaimed HBO show The White Lotus. That series, created by Mike White, has enjoyed significant success during past award seasons (including 12 nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards).

In the same way that The White Lotus focuses on a bunch of privileged people on a swanky vacation, Bad Summer People centers around a group of wealthy characters on holiday in the fictional haven of Salcombe, Fire Island – but things take a decidedly dark turn when a body is discovered off the side of the boardwalk, revealing a web of life-shattering secrets,...

When Robert Pattinson Fell Asleep With Knives After Watching A Horror Movie: “I Kept Thinking Someone Was…”
Image
Did You Know Robert Pattinson Once Slept With Knives After Watching A Horror Movie? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Robert Pattinson might be Batman on-screen but in real life? He is not so fearless. The British superstar admitted he’s become too sentient of horror flicks. So much so that he once fell asleep clutching knives after watching one. During a chat with Mickey 17 director Bong Joon Ho for GQ, Pattinson revealed that horror films freak him out now.

“I used to watch a lot of dark stuff when I was younger and think ‘yeah, this is cool.’ And now, I’m too sensitive,” the actor said. “It’s strange, you’d think it would go the other way round. As you get older, you become less frightened of these [films]. I can’t watch horror movies anymore.” The fear got real when he had to watch a horror film before meeting a director.

Ty Segall Announces New Album Possession, Shares “Fantastic Tomb”: Stream
Image
Following two album releases in 2024, indie rocker Ty Segall shows no signs of slowing down, as he’s just announced his 16th studio album. Titled Possession, it’s out May 30th via Drag City. Along with the announcement, he’s shared the lead single, “Fantastic Tomb,” and a new string of fall tour dates.

Possession was co-written with filmmaker Matt Yoka, with whom Segall has collaborated in the past on music videos (like the 14-minute short film for 2016’s Emotional Mugger) and film scores (like Yoka’s 2020 documentary Whirlybird).

As a non-musician, Yoka brings a different perspective than the one Segall has amassed throughout his career, but the sense of trust they’ve developed over the years allows them to “throw the conceptual ball back and forth, each acting as writer and editor in the process,” as described in a press release.

Robert Pattinson Reveals Why He “Can’t Watch Horror Movies Anymore”
Image
Noted…don’t try to scare Robert Pattinson.

During a recent conversation with his Mickey 17 director, Bong Joon Ho for GQ, the actor opened up about the reason why he “can’t watch horror movies anymore” as an adult.

“I used to watch a lot of dark stuff when I was younger and think like, ‘Yeah, this is cool.’ And now, I’m too sensitive,” he admitted. “It’s strange, you’d think it would go the other way round. As you get older, you become less frightened of these [films]. I can’t watch horror movies anymore.”

While Bong questioned if it was because the actor “became a dad,” Pattinson confessed with a laugh that his fears surrounding horror films “happened before that though.” The actor shares a baby girl with girlfriend Suki Waterhouse.

The Twilight star later recalled a moment when he got “very frightened” recently, leading him...

Robert Pattinson ‘Can’t Watch Horror Movies Anymore,’ Fell Asleep With Knives After One Scared Him: ‘I Kept Thinking Someone Was Breaking In’
Image
Robert Pattinson participated in a GQ video interview with his “Mickey 17” director Bong Joon Ho and revealed that he’s become “too sensitive” to horror movies as an adult. The actor was recently required to watch a horror movie before meeting a director for a new project, and it resulted in Pattinson sleeping with knives because he was so scared of a home invasion.

“I used to watch a lot of dark stuff when I was younger and think ‘yeah, this is cool’. And now, I’m too sensitive,” Pattinson said. “It’s strange, you’d think it would go the other way round. As you get older, you become less frightened of these [films]. I can’t watch horror movies anymore.”

Bong Joon Ho speculated that Pattinson’s new resistance to horror movies might be “because you became a dad.” Pattinson had his first child with fellow actor Suki Waterhouse in March 2024. However,...

Robert Pattinson Almost Had a ‘Mental Breakdown’ Filming ‘Die, My Love’ Dance Sequence with Jennifer Lawrence
Image
Robert Pattinson definitely did not want to freestyle-dance for Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love.”

Pattinson told GQ in a video (below) alongside “Mickey 17” writer/director Bong Joon Ho that he almost had a “mental breakdown” amid filming a dance sequence with his co-star Jennifer Lawrence. Pattinson pleaded with Ramsay to have the scene be removed from the script, or be choreographed instead.

“I did this movie with Lynne Ramsay, and she’s a really good dancer. And Jennifer Lawrence is a really good dancer. They just find it so easy. They’re like, ‘Just dance, it’s just music playing, just dance,'” Pattinson said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to have a mental breakdown when this happens. We need to either choreograph it or cut it.’ And they’re like, ‘No, just dance, stop being all freak.’ It came to the day, and I was sweating so much,...

Possession (1981) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The Possession episode of Revisited was Written and Narrated by Vannah Taylor, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Critics once called it “too vulgar for arthouse, too pretentious for grindhouse.” A body horror film that’s not really horror, the most depressing break-up movie, a socio-political drama that ends in apocalyptic hysteria. It is hard to believe that this is all contained into one film. The most bizarre psychological thriller you can lay your eyes on is a horrifying and captivating film that oozes chaos and defies categorization: Andrzej Zulawski’s 1981 cult film, Possession.

Zulawski was a Polish film director born in Soviet Ukraine but moved to France after his film The Devil was banned by the Polish government and landed him in jail. His next film was again halted by authorities, causing him to lose his right to...

Top 10 English Language Horror Movies of 2024
Alycia Debnam-Carey, David Thompson, James Morosini, Brittany O'Grady, Nina Bloomgarden, Devon Terrell, Reina Hardesty, and Gavin Leatherwood in It's What's Inside (2024)
Horror in 2024 proved that the genre thrives on reinvention, delivering a lineup as daring as it was unsettling. While the year saw its share of sequels and prequels, what stood out were films that reimagined old tropes with fresh perspectives. From slashers infused with arthouse aesthetics to nuns with evil pregnancies, horror expanded its boundaries. Themes of bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom resonated strongly, reflecting societal anxieties in the wake of seismic legal changes, while other films boldly tackled aliens, vampires, fanatics, and class disparity. The year wasn’t without its disappointments, but when horror soared, it truly transcended. Cinephiles flocked to both indie gems and boundary-pushing studio fare, underscoring a collective appetite for narratives that terrify and provoke. So let us take a look at the ten standout English-language horror movies of 2024—movies that not only chilled us to the bone but also made us think.

10. It’s What’s Inside

'Smile 2' Is Streaming on Paramount+
Image
Smile 2, Paramount Pictures' major horror sequel of 2024 and one of the best genre movies of the year, continues to be one of the most streamed movies on Paramount+. The film, released in theaters last October, landed on streaming on December 3, and it is now still at the top of the streamer's movie chart.

Written and directed by Parker Finn, Smile 2 was one of the highly anticipated sequels of the year. Smile, based on Finn's short feature Laura Hasn't Slept, was a groundbreaking success for Paramount Pictures, which acquired the film for a direct-to-streaming release. However, the test screenings had extraordinary results and the studio decided to invest a bit in marketing, pushing for a theatrical release. The check was for $50 million.

It resulted in a massive hit for Paramount, and talks about a sequel began soon after. Finn agreed to participate only if he could have creative control,...

Quick Links Marriage Is the Real Horror In Possession The Subway Scene Informs the Best Nosferatu Performance Marriage Is More Complicated Than Love and Hate

Over a century after Nosferatu’s debut, Robert Eggers resuscitates the classic story. Originally premiering in 1922, F.W. Murnau’s German Expressionist film was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula that caused an uproar. The Stoker estate demanded that all copies of the film be destroyed, and if it weren’t for one rebel in the production, viewers would have no evidence of the film to this day. Similar to the source material, Nosferatu follows a lawyer who unknowingly starts a chain reaction of destruction. After signing a real estate deal, Count Orlok stalks the human Ellen, with whom he has a connection. Eggers takes a largely simple story and turns it into a psychosexual drama.

This wouldn’t be a possibility without the...

Nosferatu (2024) Review
Image
Robert Eggers’ long-awaited Nosferatu is not merely a remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic, nor is it a straightforward adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It is, instead, a gothic symphony of horror that pays homage to its predecessors while carving its own distinctive path into the annals of vampire lore. With meticulous attention to detail, a palpable sense of dread, and a career-defining performance by Lily-Rose Depp, Eggers delivers a film that is both hauntingly beautiful and deeply unsettling.

Set in early 19th-century Germany, the film follows Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), an earnest young estate agent tasked with traveling to Transylvania to meet the enigmatic Count Orlok (Skarsgård). Despite warnings from his wife Ellen (Depp), who has been psychically haunted by Orlok since childhood, Thomas ventures into the count’s foreboding domain. It’s a setup familiar to fans of the genre, yet Eggers imbues it with his trademark precision.

This 1981 Horror Film Secretly Made Lily-Rose Depp’s Terrifying Nosferatu Performance Even Better
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Nosferatu.Actor Lily-Rose Depp has impressed audiences with her jaw-dropping performance in director Robert Eggers’s horror film Nosferatu, and a 43-year-old movie is partly to thank for it. In the movie, Depp portrays a woman who falls under the psychic influence of the evil vampire Count Orlok. The demonic episodes she experiences as she falls under the undead plague carrier’s spell make for some of the most shocking scenes in Nosferatu.

As a remake of the 1922 film of the same name, Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu mainly draws inspiration from it and Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, which inspired the original movie. However, there is a more obscure horror film from 1981 that inspired the 2024 version of Nosferatu, specifically Depp’s portrayal of protagonist Ellen Hutter. The former movie also revolves around a woman who seems to become involved with an otherworldly force, and the way...

Nosferatu Scares Up Big Bucks at Box Office With Christmas Day Debut
Image
Nosferatu took a bite out of the box office over the Christmas weekend. The gothic horror remake of the 1922 silent film of the same name managed to almost recoup its entire production budget after only five days in theaters.

Ahead of its theatrical release on Christmas Day, Nosferatu was projected to gross $25 million over its five-day opening weekend, which would have been a good debut for the $50 million-budgeted movie. However, per Variety, Nosferatu managed to exceed box office expectations, earning $21.1 million just over the traditional three-day weekend. Once the Christmas and Boxing Day ticket receipts were added, Nosferatu's debut grew to a remarkable $40.3 million. Nosferatu's ticket sales also rank as the biggest Christmas Day launch and weekend haul for a genre film, surpassing the previous record holder: Robert Rodriguez's The Faculty (1988).

Nosferatu And Lily-Rose Depp Put A Freaky Cap On The Biggest Trend In 2024 Horror
Image
This article contains some spoilers for "Nosferatu."

For the most part, a trend that emerges during any particular year of cinema doesn't have anything genuinely competitive about it. Sure, there may be the "Dante's Peak" and "Volcano," "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" years, where highly similar projects are developed to compete with each other, but most trends that occur are less about an intentional duel and are more an indication of where the culture's head is at. Remember 2017, when a John Denver song turned up in no less than five separate movies? While there's no one catch-all explanation for such a thing happening, it's intriguing and potentially illuminating to identify the trend and see what, if anything, it speaks to in the contemporary real world.

When identifying a trend in art, especially cinema, it's important to remember that films are made on a time delay — the movies of 2024 were shot, for the most part,...

Nosferatu Is The Rare Horror Movie That's Actually, Truly, Genuinely Scary
Image
Horror is my favorite genre, but for the most part, it doesn't scare me. I'm not boasting about how brave I am (trust me; lots of stuff scares me — I have a panic attack anytime I have to get on an airplane), but merely stating that I've spent so much time with the horror genre that I've grown desensitized to it. I still love and appreciate horror movies, but very rarely do they actually make me afraid. So when I see a horror movie that manages to get to me on a raw, primordial, emotional level, I'm impressed. And Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu," a new take on both "Dracula" and F. W. Murnau's silent movie classic, seemingly achieves the impossible: it's scary!

To be fair, horror, like comedy, is a very subjective genre. What scares one person might seem laughable to others. In my experience, a large swath of the...

Nosferatu (1979) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
1922, 1979, and now 2024. The movie that was a legally distinct, non-copyright infringing version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula has had an impact for over 100 years now. The 1922 version is the one that most people think of not only when the name Nosferatu is said, but when people discuss silent horror films in general. At the other end of the spectrum, we have one of the year’s most hotly anticipated horror films with Robert Eggers releasing only his 4th film on Christmas day that will be his own very unique take on the property. Lost in that shuffle is the 1979 version from famed German director Werner Herzog with his best friend/muse/psychopath actor Klaus Kinski. It isn’t talked about nearly as much and is unique and different enough from the first film that it deserves its own revisit.

The whole reason that 1922’s Nosferatu is the way that it is,...

'Nosferatu' Star Lily-Rose Depp Was Inspired by Isabelle Adjani in 'Possession'
Image
We’re less than two weeks away from finally getting to see Robert Eggers' Nosferatu on the big screen, and to say we’re sitting on pins and needles would be an understatement. Thus far, the vampire flick has been earning high praise all around, and is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93%. Called the "horror movie of the year" by director Fede Álvarez, many are highlighting the amazing performance of Lily-Rose Depp, who, as it turns out, took inspiration from a cult-classic 1981 thriller.

Speaking with IndieWire ahead of the premiere of Nosferatu on Dec. 25, Depp told the outlet that when it came time to play Ellen, she looked to another actress that had portrayed the same role in Werner Herzog’s 1979 film: Isabelle Adjani. Lily-Rose Depp: Isabelle Adjani’s ‘Iconic’ Performance in ‘Possession’ Was an Inspiration for ‘Nosferatu’
Image
Lily-Rose Depp is emulating another Ellen Hutter (and another French starlet) for her breakout turn in Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu”: Isabelle Adjani. In a recent interview, Depp told IndieWire that, while Adjani’s portrayal of Ellen Hutter in Werner Herzog’s 1979 feature “Nosferatu the Vampyre” no doubt was a touchstone for her own take on the fictional character, it was Adjani’s “Possession” performance that directly inspired Depp’s standout role.

“I thought a lot about ‘Possession,’ of course,” Depp said. “Isabelle Adjani has an incredible and iconic performance in that. She also was an Ellen of the past [in Werner Herzog’s 1979 ‘Nosferatu the Vampyre’] and so I was very honored to carry the French girl Baton to play Ellen in this version. She’s an actress that inspires me a lot.”

Adjani’s career became synonymous with Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 thriller “Possession,” in which she starred as a woman who descends into...

‘Replicator’ Review
Image
Stars: Brey Noelle, Brian Spangler, Jim Azelvandre, Kayla Royko, KateLynn E. Newberry, LeJon Woods | Written by Mark Andrew Hamer, Russ Lindway | Directed by Mark Andrew Hamer

Replicator, the new film from director Mark Andrew Hamer and co-writer Russ Lindway comes with a wonderfully comic book styled poster, a title that makes you think of the Resonator from Lovecraft’s From Beyond and a plot that recalls Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Darby Vincent is having a bad day. First, a judge let the abusive husband of the woman she was representing walk free thanks to the incompetence of Sheriff Williams’ the same married sheriff she’s having an affair with.

Then she comes home to find her father Ron, whom she reluctantly allowed to move in with her, getting it on with Gina. And then goes off on her for interrupting them. It’s obvious that terminal cancer hasn’t...

Smile 3 sets 2025 production date
Parker Finn
Parker Finn’s creepy horror series Smile is now getting a Smile 3, with filming set to start next year. More here.

This year’s Smile 2 ramped up Parker Finn’s gloriously-creepy concept in many conceivable ways and the film proved to be a commercial success, generating around $140m worldwide from a $30m budget. It looked gorgeous and contained some wonderful set pieces and you can catch our review here.

While the sequel earned around $70m less than the original breakout hit, it was still very comfortably in profit and Paramount will certainly happy to back another entry in the series as it will almost certainly do the same.

A new listing on Production Weekly (courtesy of World Of Reel) reveals that Finn’s Smile 3 will enter production in 2025 although crucially, we don’t know when. That’s an important detail given that Smile 2 commenced filming in January of...

Jurassic Park (1993) – What Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
Here at JoBlo Horror Originals we talk a lot about gateway horror films. Depending on the generation you belong to, that can be a few different things. Kids of the 70s will always have Jaws as an introduction to horror and that movie is still a great way to introduce newer generations to the genre after almost 50 years. Two of my favorites from the 80’s, and two films that both my sons have seen, are The Gate and The Monster Squad. Again, both great and both still hold up as not only fun horror flicks but great ways to ease in the younger crowd. As a kid born in 1985, I am much more a child of the 90s so even if you hadn’t read the title of the video you clicked, you could probably guess that I saw Jurassic Park in theaters, it scared and enthralled me and made me want more.

Smile Director Teases Smile 3, Under One Condition

Finn has revealed that he could make a thirdSmile movie, but he will do so on his own terms.

Smile 2 lays the groundwork for more movies, thats for sure. And were not talking about formulaic iterations of the same story. The sequel, which features a great performance from Naomi Scott, is more abrasive with regard to gore and really expands the scope of the story which makes sense when your lead is a pop star with millions of fans.

In the second Smile, Skye Riley (Scott) is a very successful pop star who has just gone through a horrific accident in which she lost her boyfriend. Recovering from drug addiction, Skye is afraid to request painkillers,...

‘Grotesquerie’ Finale Proves That the Last Piece Is Never as Fun as the First [Review]
Image
Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken’s Grotesquerie started in a rather unassuming fashion, but it was clear that a palpable darkness was brewing under the surface of its characters and setting, like a gaping chasm to Hell that could swallow the world at any moment. There’s been an emphasis on order ruling over chaos – particularly in the form of jigsaw puzzles – right from Grotesquerie’s first episode. Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) and the rest of her family would innocently solve puzzles all season while she simultaneously tries to put together the pieces of a grander serial killer mystery where Lois can’t see the forest for the trees. To Grotesquerie’s credit, it’s a series that’s routinely kept its audience guessing regarding how all these pieces possibly fit together and what the finished picture is supposed to look like. Grotesquerie certainly hasn’t been...

'That's Super Important To Me:' Smile Director Reveals Condition For Making A Third Film
Image
Since its release, Smile 2 has earned loads of praise from critics and racked up some impressive box office numbers. While director Parker Finn has been toying with the idea of a third installment, he does have one condition that needs to be met first.

"I think there are a lot of interesting roads that any future Smile could go down. For me, I love all the stuff that goes bump in the night, and all the really frightening things of the big concept of Smile," Finn told Collider. "But really, for me, Smile is a vehicle to tell really intense and hopefully thoughtful character stories, and so I'd wanna make sure, regardless of if more than one person might have it, that we still find a way to really invest intimacy into the storytelling. That's super important to me. But I think there are some really interesting tricks still up the sleeves of Smile.

Jenna Ortega's Five Favorite Horror Movies Offer An Eclectic Variety Of Frights
Image
Jenna Ortega has officially evolved from a Disney princess to a scream queen. In just a few short years, the Gen Z star has left her mark in horror with successful movies (both in existing franchises and helping to kickstarting a new one), while also helping revitalize Tim Burton's career as his muse in two highly popular titles.

Though Ortega had already appeared in big movies like "Iron Man 3" (in a small role as the Vice President's daughter) and had a recurring role on "Jane the Virgin" a decade ago, it wasn't really until after the pandemic that Ortega broke big, especially in the horror landscape. It helped, of course, that Ortega appeared in four horror films in 2022 alone. She was a protagonist of the "Scream" reboot alongside Melissa Barrera, subverting the franchise's iconic kitchen murder scene by surviving her encounter with Ghostface. Then she appeared in the...

‘Possession: Kerasukan’ Movie Ending Explained And Summary: Is Faris Dead?
Image
Inspired by Andrzej Zulawski’s cult horror, Possession, the Indonesian horror drama Possession: Kerasukan, directed by Razka Robby Ertanto, is visually enticing; however, it doesn’t have that standout quality. The supernatural is not convincing, and while the idea is impactful, it feels forced visually. At times, things unfold too conveniently, and there are scenes that are not executed well, but the message at the core of the film is well conveyed. Faris and Ratna were in a loveless marriage. They were so entangled in their emotional mess that their son, Budi, was often ignored. Faris was a Navy man, and he had to stay away from home for months at a time. Ratna was a writer, and she’d recently been working on a play. She had decided to divorce Faris as soon as he returned home. Ratna’s decision to divorce him left Faris shocked. He refused to...

Robert Pattinson To Star in A24's Primetime, Inspired by To Catch a Predator
Image
Robert Pattinson is rumored to star in a new film from A24 titled Primetime, said to take influence from NBC's To Catch a Predator. The 2004 real crime series was part of NBC's Dateline television news program and followed the host Chris Hansen as he caught pedophiles red-handed. Hansen would lure adult predators and capture their creepiness on camera, which would usually result in an arrest. While most of the plot of the upcoming A24 film is under wraps, per Deadline, it is said to be a fictional story of a journalist taking on a world of crime to change the television industry forever.

A few details about the production have been revealed. Still, Pattinson is confirmed to be part of the large production team under his production company, Icki Eneo Arlo, with Brighton McCloskey. Documentary filmmaker Lance Oppenheim is set to direct and executive produce Primetime alongside screenwriter and fellow executive producer Ajon Singh.

12 More Completely Bonkers Horror Movies Like ‘The Substance’
Image
While there aren’t any movies quite like Coralie Fergeat’s “The Substance,” there are plenty of over-the-top horror films about transformation, incredibly weird science, shared identities and losing your damn mind, like the 1981 cult movie “Possession,” pretty much every David Cronenberg movie, as well as offerings from Ken Russell, Peter Strickland, Julia Ducournau and Ari Aster.

Expect screaming, exploding heads, lots of blood and some of the most insane endings ever.

Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill in “Possession” (Credit: Gaumont) Possession (1981)

Isabelle Adjani has the mother of all freakouts in a subway in this role that earned her a César for Best Actress (the French equivalent of the Oscars) and Best Actress at the Cannes Film Fest that year, but that’s not even the most mind-blowing part of the movie form Polish director Andrzej Żuławski. She’s also cheating on her husband (Sam Neill) with something that isn’t really human.

Smile 2 Director Comments on Likeness to M. Night Shyamalan's Trap
Image
Smile 2 director Parker Finn has admitted the plot of one of the year's most expected horror sequels resembles that of another of this year's horror hits, Trap. However, the director doesn't have an issue with the coincidental timing of the movie's release, which mirrors similar dual releases such as Dantes Peak and Volcano, and Armageddon and Deep Impact.

Finn is undoubtedly going through one of the best moments of his life. The horror sequel is projected to surpass expectations at the end of the weekend, possibly getting better results than the original film. Amid the questions of follow-ups, castings, and his future Possession remake, Finn spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the storyline coincidence between Smile 2 and Trap. The director used Armageddon and Deep Impact as the best examples of twin movies released around the same time when replying:

"Well, Im a big fan of Night [Shyamalan], and I...
