In the 1980s, Hollywood didn’t quite know what to do with Rutger Hauer. The actor broke out in a pretty major way following his acclaimed turn in Paul Verhoeven’s Soldier of Orange, paving the way for his American debut in the Sylvester Stallone thriller Nighthawks, where he played the villain Wulfgar. His performance as Roy Batty in Blade Runner blew people away, and for a while, it looked like he might become the next big Hollywood heartthrob, especially when he signed on to star in the epic adventure film Ladyhawke opposite Michelle Pfeiffer for Richard Donner.
But major stardom didn’t happen? Why? Perhaps it was because the movies of Hauer’s that did best at the box office were the ones where he played the villain, such as The Hitcher. He was so unforgettable as a bad guy that when he played a hero, such as in...

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Night of the Comet was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
1984, the year of many interests and fears for Americans, from fears of a nuclear attack still remaining to a love-hate relationship with consumerism, American films explored teenage life in all its aspects. Some of these films were more memorable and on point for life and fears of the American teenager from living in the valley in Valley Girl, survival like Red Dawn and The Zero Boys, and a whole lot more; the mid-1980s were filled with teen cinema, and some of it was definitely on the dark side. Year by year, we continue to be immensely impressed by the work crafted at the National Film and Television School. The level of quality production offered by the institution to its talented students is a match well-made and the films on offer at this year’s graduate showcase display that tenfold. The exhibition itself, which takes place at BFI Southbank from Monday 27th February to Thursday 2nd March, is the culmination of over 500 students’ work towards 80 short films, TV shows, commercials and games. In the run up to the showcase, Dn was afforded a preview of the films on offer across their fiction, documentary and animation strands and, in turn, has compiled the list below of the short films we recommend watching. That being said, it was incredibly difficult to narrow down the shorts on offer as the standard is so high across the board so maybe just see this...

One of the most fascinating elements of Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky" series is how each movie is a reflection of where the star was at that moment in his career. Over the course of eight films (including the two "Creed" movies in which he appeared), Stallone is critically examining his success, be it skyrocketing to ludicrous extremes (in "Rocky III") or direly on the wane (in "Rocky V"). Though his private life is another, far more complicated matter, it's rare to see a massive celebrity wrestle so honestly with his public persona. He's leveling with us because he knows how much we love The Italian Stallion. You're rooting for both Stallone and Rocky to come out on top every time. Well, almost every time.
This is a lesson Sly learned in the immediate wake of "Rocky." There's no more emphatic validation of one's artistic vision than delivering the year's top-grossing...

There’s a standard road map for an actor like Sylvester Stallone — at 76, still looking good, but no longer with a body made of rock(y) — to enter the comic-book movie zone, and that’s for him to play a figure like the righteous Ravager Stakar Ogord in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” or to voice King Shark in “The Suicide Squad.” That’s all likable nostalgic novelty casting. But what if Stallone, who in his way has played indomitable superheroes for decades (think “Rambo” and its sequels or “The Expendables” and its sequels), wants to go full avenger and portray a total comic-book demigod?
He’ll star in a chintzy slice of hellfire like “Samaritan,” based on the Mythos Comics graphic novel that was published in 2014. It’s set in Granite City, an everyday dystopia where Stallone lugs his body around with a reluctant roughneck shamble. He plays...

There's (according to rumors) only one episode of "Attack on Titan" left, but its penultimate episode shows no signs of slowing down. Now that the remaining Scouts have accepted the violence necessary to save the world, the latest episode, "Retrospective," just raised the action to new levels.
But this is still late-stage "Attack on Titan," so even in the middle of some brutal and thrilling action scenes, the show never forgets its anti-war themes. In addition to a cool new Titan reveal, there are some heavy-hitting emotional confessions and a lot of losses as we head into the finale of "Attack...

The influences behind "The Batman" run the gamut from movies to art to books, with David Fincher's "Zodiac," Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks," and even Stephen King's "Christine" being sources of inspiration. Above all, there is the film's comic book source material, which director Matt Reeves has been citing since the days back when Ben Affleck was still attached to the project, before Robert Pattinson was even cast as Batman.
According to Reeves, "The Batman" is not an adaptation of any particular comic, but it does draw loose inspiration from several tales published by DC. As he was headed into the Batcave to co-write the script with Peter Craig, Reeves said, "I went on a deep dive...

Welcome to a special Class of ’81 edition of Catalog From the Beyond, where I’m taking a little detour out of pure horror for a side quest into action thriller to celebrate the American film debut of the late, great Rutger Hauer. You may not associate Hauer with the horror genre specifically, but it’s hard to argue that he didn’t make quite the impression in genre films. Of course, most know him as Roy Batty in Blade Runner, and for me you’re not going to get a more memorable villain than his turn as John Ryder in The Hitcher. But it occurs to me that he also has something of a penchant for playing vampires with bloodsucker roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), Salem’s Lot (2004), multiple Dracula movies, and even a stint on True Blood. But long before he started buying prosthetic fangs in bulk, Hauer broke...

A romantic surprise has unexpected consequences in a gentle comedy channelling Éric Rohmer crossed with Carry on Camping
Here is a terrifically fresh, funny and gentle film from director and co-writer Guillaume Brac, which takes quite seriously something that’s always getting dismissed or patronised in pop culture: the holiday romance. The French title is À L’Abordage!, more properly translated as “Attack!” and the film is about seizing the day, going on the offensive and fortune favouring the bold.
Newcomer Eric Nantchouang plays Félix, an easygoing young guy in Paris with a naturally smiley open face; he has a moment with Alma (Asma Messaoudene) and when she says she’s going on holiday with her parents and sister in the beautiful valley of Die in south-eastern France, Félix secretly resolves to go there himself and give her what he is confident will be a wonderful romantic surprise. Star Wars: The Bad Batch Episode 9
It sounds over-the-top, but it’s true: revelations and surprises propelled this week’s round of clone adventure stories. “Bounty Lost” features excellent bounty hunter action and a pleasant focus on Omega. Sure, some revelations feel more like duds, but overall, it’s an episode that certainly isn’t afraid to move the plot forward, and returning characters and a real sense of threat keep it exciting.
Cad Bane has captured Omega. While the rest of the Bad Batch tries to catch up, she offers to help Bane’s hassled droid, Todo 360, as a way to escape her cell, but she’s too late. As with the previous Conjuring movies, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is based around a case investigated by real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. While the extended Conjuring universe, which includes the Annabelle movies, The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona, is pure fiction, the main Conjuring films stick with the ‘based on real events’ hook – but how much of the latest movie is actually based on the facts and how much is artistic license?
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is slightly different to the first two Conjuring films in that the key events in the case happen at the very start of the movie, with the main bulk of the film concerning a background investigation that isn’t based on the real case. The real case is therefore the anchor and the bookends.

UK Screen Industries Survey Highlights Socio-Economic Imbalance
A new survey has found that the majority of people working in the UK’s screen industries are from a background that is classified as ‘privileged’. The survey, conducted by the Creative Industries Policy & Evidence Centre and backed by ScreenSkills, analyzed data from the latest edition of the Office for National Statistics’ Labour Force Survey in 2019. Their research found that 53% of those surveyed from the screen industries, including the film, TV and games businesses, were from a privileged background. Looking specifically at the careers of key creative roles, specified here as arts officers, producers and directors, the number rose to 61%. That was in comparison with 38% across all industries. The definition of having a privileged background is those who had at least one parent whose job was a higher or lower managerial, administrative or professional occupation. In contrast, the screen industries employed only 25% from a ‘working class’ background,...

Mumbai, March 18 (Ians) Award shows are a big no-no for actor John Abraham, who said that he has no respect for them. The actor, who will soon be seen in the film "Mumbai Saga", refers to award shows as "circus" and says he maintains distance from such events.
"I totally don't respect awards. It's a joke. It's comical to see actors dance and then collect an award and make funny jokes," he told Ians.
However, he knows that people who take part in these shows don't view them in this way.
"I feel what they are doing is not necessarily wrong or what I am doing is wrong. But I am on this side of the fence. I am quiet about it. I just don't go for these functions. I will be a joker going to a circus, it will be demeaning and I don't want to do that,...

This week’s episode of Men in Kilts is officially titled “Witchcraft & Superstition” but should actually be called “All the Ways Sam Tries to Give Graham a Heart Attack.”
The installment focuses on all the ways Scots are obsessed with everything otherworldly. After all, as Sam voiceovers near the top of the ep, you can’t throw a stale bannock in Scotland without hitting a cemetery, castle or some sort of ancient ruins, “and the barrier between the world of the living and the world of the dead is especially thin.” Like Midnight, Texas, but plaid! And no weretigers… I think.

Star Wars: The High Republic has finally launched. This new chapter in the franchise is set hundreds of years before the Skywalker saga in a period where the Jedi were ascendant, giving creators room to tell new stories that don’t need to fit into the increasingly cramped existing continuity. The much-hyped line recently began with two novels and a children’s book: Charles Soule’s Light of the Jedi, Justina Ireland’s A Test of Courage and Cavan Scott’s The Great Jedi Rescue. We also now have the inaugural issue of Marvel Comics’ The High Republic comic series, which gives us our first taste of a new version of Yoda.
Being set so many years before the movies means that the vast majority of familiar characters won’t have been born yet, but the long-lived Yoda is here around the height of his powers. As he’s merely 700 rather than 900 years old,...

Many anime series have become phenomena that have relevance beyond the anime community. Attack on Titan is a special example thanks to a passionate audience that has stuck with the changing characters through the apocalyptic body horror war drama. Three seasons of incredible storytelling have played out over the course of seven years and the series is finally coming to an end with its fourth season.
There was a lot of love for Attack on Titan coming out of FunimationCon 2020, the anime company’s first “virtual convention.” Beyond the already released teaser trailer for Attack on Titan Season 4, Funimation had no additional details about the progress or release of these final episodes. This news isn’t exactly surprising for fans of the series, but what did come as a shock is the announcement of a new compilation film, Attack on Titan: -Chronicle- which will be released later this year.

“Star Wars” actor John Boyega gave an impassioned speech at a Black Lives Matter rally in London on Wednesday, telling a crowd through tears that black lives “have always been important.” Boyega, who played Finn in the last three “Star Wars” movies, said near the end of his speech, “I don’t know if I’ll have a career after this,” but that he was speaking from his heart.
