When director Michael Winner and screenwriter Wendell Mayes adapted Brian Garfield's novel "Death Wish," it's doubtful that they had any idea they'd be launching a film franchise that would change the landscape of vigilante thrillers forever, and solidify Charles Bronson as one of the greatest stars of action cinema. The "Death Wish" films start out as a twisted character study of a man named Paul Kersey as he slowly descends into a life of vengeance and violence, bearing arms and serving as a one-man judge, jury, and executioner. There's a real allure to righting wrongs outside of the American justice system, but as Kearsey's arc shows, his desire to kill has perhaps always been a part of him -- which makes him part of the problem.
As the franchise went on, the "Death Wish" films cared less and less about the moral conundrums of its hero and instead wanted...

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Jimmy Page needed time to find the desire to join a band after Led Zeppelin folded. Drummer John Bonham’s tragic death in 1980 brought a sudden end to the band Page formed in 1968 and guided to worldwide success in the 1970s. The Firm, featuring Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers, was that band. He was the unquestioned boss in Led Zeppelin, but Rodgers told Page to take a back seat on The Firm song “Radioactive.”
(l-r) Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers | Clayton Call/Redferns Paul Rodgers got ‘ballsy’ and told Jimmy Page to stand aside as he played the solo on 1 The Firm song
Page’s quiet career in right after Led Zeppelin folded — composing the Death Wish II soundtrack and piecing together the posthumous Led Zeppelin album Coda — received a boost in 1983. The guitarist was one of many classic rock icons who joined the Arms (Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis) benefit concerts.

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

Jimmy Page cemented his status as a classic rock guitar legend in Led Zeppelin. Years before that, he was just a session musician who realized he needed to quit to satisfy his creative interests. And before that, he was briefly a solo artist who made a record that sounded nothing like Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin proved Page’s greatness as a guitar beyond a measure of doubt. He showed his skills extended beyond the guitar during his stint with the band. The guitarist also produced, engineered, and mixed their records. He typically stuck to guitar, but Page flashed banjo and bass skills in Led Zeppelin.
He did the same on “She Just Satisfies,” a solo song from 1965.

Cannon Films is legendary as far as eighties action flicks go. An independent company headed by Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, the two became famous (or infamous) for a run of schlocky eighties B-movies. Their action movies, while cheesy, are a ton of fun, with them making icons out of Chuck Norris (with the Missing In Action series), Michael Dudikoff (American Ninja) while also doing a whole slew of movies with an aging Charles Bronson. If you watched an action, sci-fi, or horror movie in the 1980s, there was a good chance it was produced by Cannon Films. The studio — perhaps the last great home of B-movie and exploitation classics — was founded in 1967 but hit its apex between 1979 and 1987, releasing scores of films that (mostly) no one would call high cinema but which delivered thrills, chills and plenty of blood, action, and fire on a budget.
Tapping into the massive market for both high and low concept fare — the 1980s equivalent of drive-in double bill fillers — Cannon, under the leadership of Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, were perhaps best known for churning out chintzy crowdpleasers like the Chuck Norris-starring Missing in Action and The Delta Force along with a slew of Death Wish sequels.
But the company also produced titillating titles like Lady Chatterley’s Lover, slasher fare such as Schizoid and New Year’s Evil,...

Jimmy Page went to some dark places in the years following John Bonham’s sudden death in September 1980. Led Zeppelin had been at the center of the guitarist’s life since the band began 12 years earlier and they were gearing up for an American tour when the tragic news hit and brought all band activity to an immediate halt. The Who responded to the death of their drummer two years earlier by simply hiring a new one and hitting the road, but Zeppelin were unwilling to go that route and...

Jimmy Page kept himself pretty busy in the Eighties. In addition to co-founding the short-lived supergroup Xyz, he composed the soundtrack to Death Wish II, launched the Firm with Free and Bad Company vocalist Paul Rodgers, reunited with Led Zeppelin for a couple high-profile one-offs, and guest-starred with everyone from Roy Harper to the Rolling Stones. Late in the decade, he also made time to record his debut solo album, Outrider, still the only non-soundtrack LP he’s issued on his own to date. (David Fricke’s two-star Rolling Stone...

The year is 1974 a former military man whose family is taken from him turns vigilante to hunt the people responsible for taking his wife and child from him. I’m not talking about Frank Castle, The Punisher (who made his first appearance Feb of that year), but I am talking about character Paul Kersey who is the main character of the film series Death Wish. Today is 2018 and the vigilante is being rebooted for big screen once more. Let’s check out the 2nd trailer (and poster) for the movie below:

After working on Caboblanco, Thompson moved onto the slasher genre with Happy Birthday to Me (1981). Whilst by no means the best the genre has to offer, Happy Birthday to Me proved to be an enjoyable horror film, and definitely better than some similar films made in the wake of John Carpenters Halloween (1978). Between Caboblanco and 10 to Midnight, Bronson kept himself busy, starring in director Peter Hunt’s Death Hunt (1981), which found the actor sharing the screen once again with Lee Marvin, the first time since working together on The Dirty Dozen. Opening to mixed reviews, Death Hunt is still an excellent old style action movie, and one of Bronson’s best later star vehicles. Death Hunt was followed by Death Wish 2 (1982),...

Actor Bruce Willis, will star in a remake of "Death Wish", to be directed by Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado, rebooting director Michael Winner's 1974 vigilante action feature:
The original Paramount Pictures thriller was loosely based on the novel "Death Wish" by author Brian Garfield, following former WWII and Korean war vet, 'Paul Kersey'.
Kersey, a 'liberal' thinking architect, becomes an unstoppable late-night vigilante killer, targeting muggers, after a deadly assault against his wife and daughter pushes him over the deep end.
At the time of its initial release, critics were displeased with the film, considering it an 'immoral threat to society' and an encouragement of 'antisocial behavior'.
Despite the negative reviews, producers sensed the 'primal' appeal of the premise with audiences and released five "Death Wish" films.
Titles include "Death Wish II" (1982), "Death Wish 3" (1985), "Death Wish 4: The Crackdown" (1987) and "Death Wish V: The Face of Death...

Responsible for the likes of "Masters of the Universe," "Cyborg," "Breakin'," "Cobra," "Lifeforce," "Invasion U.S.A.," "American Ninja," "Death Wish II," and "Bloodsport," the studio is now back with a new slate of movies is on the horizon.
Formed under the new hand of Richard Albiston, Cannon Films Ltd. was established in 2014 and is moving forward with the ideals of former chairman Menahem Golan about putting the artist first. Today comes word of eight films which mark their inaugral slate - "America Ninja Apprentice," "Return of The Delta Force," "U.S. Sniper," "Allan Quatermain and the Jewel of the East," "Curse," "Zombi: They Live," "Writer's Block" and "The Leopard Hunts at Midnight".

Electric Boogaloo was the name of the wacky 1985 sequel to the break dance epic Breakin’ – which I don’t know was worthy of a follow-up but if there was one studio up to the effort in the mid-‘80s, it was Cannon Films. Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story Of Cannon Films is the title of a new documentary that plays for one night only in St. Louis at Landmark’s The Tivoli Theater Thursday, September 17th at 7pm.
Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, prolific salesmen with little regard for quality, bought Cannon Films for half million dollars in 1979 (it was founded in ’67) and turned it into an efficient assembly line of high-concept, action, and exploitation. Lovers of low-brow cinema could always count on a good time when that Cannon Films logo appeared on-screen. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Pt 2, the Sly Stallone arm wrestling opus Over The Top,...

Much like the Orion Pictures logo that recently resurfaced and excited Generation Nostalgia™, you probably know the Cannon Films emblem, may remember their films and might even fetishize their library. But unlike Orion, which gave cineastes nine Woody Allen movies, unimpeachable genre classics like “RoboCop,” “The Terminator” and four Best Picture Oscar winners (“Platoon” among them), Cannon’s independent outsider brand was immediately defined by its lack of quality, good taste and sense. A schlock ‘em, sock ‘em house of shameless low-rent, Z-grade movies, the rogue and independent Cannon broke through the mainstream film market in the 1980s with its rash of no-budget exploitation pictures that even Roger Corman would be appalled by. Starting with Charles Bronson's "Death Wish II" (and its subsequent sequels), through "highlights" like Tobe Hooper's “Lifeforce," “American Ninja” and “Breakin’,” Cannon delighted B-movie genre heads with their...

We are honestly proud to bring the Golan-Globus epic, the flagship of Cannon Films, Death Wish 3 for its 30th anniversary. I’ve been wanting to show this film for some time now and lord knows people have demanded it (namely Jeremy Jones, who contributes to Dtb). If you haven’t seen any or the previous Death Wish films, you’ll be fine. They pretty much recap it in the beginning and let’s face it, there wasn’t really a heavy plot to Death Wish or Death Wish 2.
Death Wish 3

Charles Bronson brings out the heavy artillery in this gun-blazing, no-holds-barred thriller! Paul Kersey (Bronson) longs to leave his fighting days behind him. But when he arrives in New York to visit an old friend, he finds him gasping for breath in a pool of blood! Now the silent avenger must wage war...

There's nothing particularly special about Hilla Medalia's documentary, "The Go-Go Boys: The Inside Story of Cannon Films," other than its subjects, Menahem Golan and Yorum Globus. The eponymous Israeli cousins are well known to anyone over the age of -- well, never mind. Arriving on Hollywood shores in the early 80s, this filmmaking team -- Golan was the filmmaker, Globus the moneyman -- had ambitions to make it big and despite lacking certain obvious traits (such as taste) that is exactly what they did. Getting their break in 1984 with a dance film fittingly called "Breakin," only two years later their Cannon Films was making 40-plus films, paying Sylvester Stallone $10-plus million, and bankrolling not only low-brow stars Charles Bronson ("Death Wish II"), Chuck Norris ("Delta Force") and Jean-Claude Van Damme ("Bloodsport") but the likes of John Cassavettes ("Love Streams"), Norman Mailer ("Tough Guys ...

This video supercut of "Arcades in Movies" was created by the Huffington Post. It features a lot of movies from mid-70s to the mid-90s, which was the golden age for arcades.
Back when I was a kid I wanted to own an arcade. I thought it would be such a fun job. Oh, how the times have changed. If I wanted to go to and arcade today, odds are I'd have to go to a Dave and Buster's.
Movies in the super cut via /Film:
“Rancho Deluxe” (1975) “Jaws” (1975) “Jaws 2″ (1978) “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (1978) “Dawn of the Dead” (1978) “Midnight Madness” (1980) “Bustin’ Loose” (1981) “Death Wish II” (1982) “Rocky III” (1982) “Tron” (1982) “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (1982) “Jekyll and Hyde… Together Again” (1982) “The Toy” (1982) “Joysticks” (1983) “WarGames” (1983) “Twilight Zone: The Movie” (1983) “Strange Brew” (1983) “Nightmares” [segment 'Bishop of Battle'] (1983) “Never Say Never Again” (1983) “High School U.S.A.” (1983) “Rumble Fish” (1983) “Footloose” (1984) “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock...

The poster screamed: “Most criminals answer to the law. The world’s most savage executioner must answer to Bronson.” Since the late 1960s, Charles Bronson’s name on a marquee was a guarantee of unchained action. Some may have thought that British movie director Michael Winner died years ago. He stopped making films in the ‘90s and even wrote his own joke obituary which was picked up on by some media and taken seriously. Winner continued to live in London and found a new career as a film critic with the long-running “Winner’s Dinners” column in the Sunday UK Times newspaper. The world has lost another great one as Screen Daily reports that today (Jan. 21) director Michael Winner has passed on at age 77 at his home in Kensington, south London due to to heart and liver problems.
While the world will undoubtedly remember Winner for his vigilante films Death Wish, Death Wish 2, and Death Wish 3, Michael had also won over the hearts of genre fans everywhere with the incredibly creepy and disturbing film The Sentinel, which featured the late John Carradine as a clergyman sitting guard over the doorway to Hell.
Winner is survived by his wife, Geraldine, whom he met in 1957 when she was a ballet dancer. They married in 2011. We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest of condolences to Winner's family, friends, and constituents. Rest easy, good sir, and thank you for all that you gave.

The original Death Wish, starring Charles Bronson, never aspired to be anything more than a B-grade action flick tailored to the tastes of moviegoers with something of a bloodlust. It wasn’t a perfect film, rife with editing flaws, clichéd writing, and lots of camp, but it always took itself seriously and expected audiences to do the same. Death Wish II was a suitable follow-up that arguably took the darkness of the original and kept it up, adhering to the original narrative legacy of a grieving man turned vigilante. Death Wish III and Death Wish IV: The Crackdown are where the series went off the rails. Not only are the premises of each incredibly shaky but they lack the same severity, devolving instead into parodies of the very series they’re hoping to continue. Consequently, MGM’s Bu-ray releases of the first three sequels to the original classic will make...

In the opening salvo, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to enter the fatal playing field, in hopes of sparing her younger sister, and struggles to stay alive amongst friends and enemies. See It Because: As far as adaptations of young adult novels go, this is one of the best. Director Gary Ross takes the subject matter seriously and imbues the project with some real drama, while Lawrence is pitch-perfect as the heroic but fallible Katniss. BBFC tries to gauge attitudes to the depiction of sadism and violence after The Human Centipede 2 and The Bunny Game
Britain's film censors have commissioned new research into public attitudes to depictions of sadistic and sexual violence in the wake of films such as The Bunny Game and The Human Centipede 2 which push, if not cross, boundaries of what is acceptable on screen.
David Cooke, director of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), said focus groups had already started watching some of the more extreme films. "We are asking the public on a fairly in-depth basis to look at some of this difficult material," he said. "We're really trying to get their take on whether the things they are seeing seem to them to be harmful or not."

Behind every great action movie, there’s some sort of flimsy excuse for the shooting. Here’s our list of genre’s five most common plotlines…
In screenwriting classes, they call it the inciting incident. For filmgoers, it’s perhaps quietly filed in the back of their brain as ‘the reason why the hero buys a gun and starts killing lots of bad guys.’
It’s often said that, in all forms of art, we’re really just telling the same stories over and over again – and so it is with the action genre. As chaotic and senseless as such films often appear to be, even the trashiest and ineptly made have at least a flimsy excuse for all the explosions and shoot-outs.
To this end, here are the five basic action movie plots as we understand them. The actors who play the heroes and villains may change, the settings may vary,...

According to reports, director Joe Carnahan ("The Grey") will script and direct a reboot of director Michael Winner's 1974 vigilante action feature "Death Wish".
The original Paramount Pictures thriller was loosely based on the novel "Death Wish" by author Brian Garfield, following former WWII and Korean war vet, 'Paul Kersey'.
Kersey, now a 'liberal' thinking architect, becomes an unstoppable late-night vigilante killer, targeting muggers, after a deadly assault against his wife and daughter pushes him over the deep end.
At the time of its initial release, critics were displeased with the film, considering it an 'immoral threat to society' and an encouragement of 'antisocial behavior'.
Despite the negative reviews, producers sensed the 'primal' appeal of the premise with audiences and released five "Death Wish" films.
Titles include "Death Wish II" (1982), "Death Wish 3" (1985), "Death Wish 4: The Crackdown" (1987) and "Death Wish V: The Face of Death" (1994).
