70-escapism in former Communist Bulgaria
wrv-168583 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
'Und nachstes Jahr am Balaton' is German for 'and next year at Balaton' -- Balaton is the name of a famous Hungarian lake. This well-made film carries you back to a whirlling, hot & sunny 1970-s summer holiday.

In those days the residents of an East European Communist country could freely travel abroad to other Communist countries. So in this film we get involved with an East German family of two adults and two teenagers -- taking the train to Bulgaria for their holidays at the Black Sea-coast.

However, shortly after their departure they fall apart, and continue their trip separately. The film follows the adventures of each of them; in the end they all re-unite.

Although knowledge about 1980-Communist Eastern Europe might help, this film's main theme is escapism, in the very true sense of the word.

If you were around at the time: sit back, relax, and get carried away by this film. It surely will warm you heart with old memories.

For those who were not around, the film provides insight in a world gone long ago.

GDR Road movie
DasGlasperlenspiel9 April 2022
A summer road movie from the GDR, in which a young couple are on their way to Bulgaria for vacation. Complicaciones are of course not a surprise, when the in-laws are to travel with you. The lovers break up, they meet and travel with other people, they break up again, and finally they meet again. All this with the background of a summer trip through Czechoslovakia, Hungary and finally to Bulgaria. It's all staged with a light hand and is still good to look at today.
