Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Prom season has once again fallen upon us. Finding the prefect clothes, restaurant, and date all factors into having the best time possible but as we have seen in the horror genre, you also need to avoid some things. Be on the lookout for psychic killers, wronged students turned into slashers, and the cutthroat drama of being named prom king or queen. While the original Prom Night is hailed as a classic of both the slasher genre and that ridiculous early horror run for Jaime Lee Curtis, there are other movies to watch this time of year. You could put on any of the 4 Carrie entries which all deal with bullying and psychic powers, or a Nightmare on Elm Street which features a burned to death jerk coming back to kill people who wronged them years later, or you could middle Hellraiser movies that were just tagged as a sequel...

This popular horror game just got a disappointing update
Image
If you've enjoyed running from Leatherface (or playing as him) in the tense multiplayer survival horror game The Texas Chain Saw Massacre developed by Sumo Nottingham and later Black Tower Studios, you might be saddened to learn that after the next update, there won't be any new content coming to the game.

On May 13, game publisher Gun Interactive shared a post confirming that the game will not receive any further support or content, specifically there will not be anymore "Dlc, balance updates, or bug fixes, after our upcoming May patch."

Why this decision? According to the post, the publishers feel that the game has reached its final stages and is now "fully realized."

But if you still enjoy playing the game and aren't ready to say goodbye yet, don't worry. It will still be playable for the foreeable future. Gun Interactive says it is not being delisted and will still be playable.

Sean Connery’s 16% Rotten Tomatoes Superhero Film Is Delighting New Audiences on a Free Streamer
Image
While the comic book movie genre is all the rage now thanks to the MCU and DC, there was a time when they were more grounded, gritty and edgy. Before the big studio franchises came and gave a CGI-filled direction to the genre movies like Blade, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, X-Menmovies kept the audience on the periphery of realism and fantasy. One among them, Sean Connery-led The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, finds some love on streaming.

As per FlixPatrol, the 2003 movie is steadily climbing the Tubi charts where it's streaming for free. The movie is at #7 on the list, standing behind titles like The Fast & The Furious, Friday the 13th, Next Friday, and more. While the steampunk superhero film is loosely based on the comic book series of the same name by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill got mixed reactions from the audience upon its debut it was a commercial hit,...

Remember When the ‘Final Destination 5’ Cast Spoofed ‘Saved by the Bell’ for a Murder Musical?
Image
A buried viral hit gives the ‘Final Destination’ franchise a musical makeover that riffs on a ‘90s sitcom classic and proves the slasher series’ versatility.

When iconic horror franchises are under discussion, it’s typically Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Child’s Play, Saw, and The Conjuring Universe that come to mind. That being said, Final Destination has a wildly consistent track record and surprisingly continuity across its five films that gives the franchise far more depth than one would expect. Final Destination may be popcorn movie fun, but there’s no denying that it’s made an entire generation of horror fans scared to drive behind a log truck, walk under a fire escape, or get in a tanning bed. It’s created just as much terror and apprehension around these innocuous items as Psycho did for the shower. Final Destination doesn’t always get the respect...

The 5 Best Slasher Movies of the 2020s So Far
Image
Halfway through the 2020s, the verdict is still out about whether or not this has been a good decade for movies. Every one of the past five years, beginning with the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, has been marked with concerning debates about the state of Hollywood, the viability of continued large-scale filmmaking and the entertainment industry’s future. That said, there is one silver lining that cinephiles can find from the past five years of movies: the slasher genre is back.

The 2020s has turned out to be a surprisingly great decade for the horror subgenre. Here are the five best slasher films that it has given us so far.

“Freaky” (Universal Pictures) “Freaky” (2020)

It may have been rolled out in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, but “Freaky” still ranks as one of the first great slasher movies released in a decade that has turned out to be a strong period for the genre.

Jason Universe gets a new logo to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Friday the 13th
Image
Today – May 9, 2025 – marks the 45th anniversary of the release of one of the most popular horror movies ever made, Friday the 13th. The movie that launched my favorite franchise, and one that I feel is underrated, as it’s a great film that often gets overshadowed by its sequels. Last year, the Friday the 13th franchise rights holders at Horror Inc. announced that they were launching the Jason Universe, which would encompass “new Friday the 13th activations that will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced @JasonUniverse13 on social media or by visiting the official Jason Universe website.” Now, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the original film, Jason Universe has unveiled their new logo in a video that can be seen at the bottom of this article.

As fans know, the Friday the 13th franchise was recently bogged down...

Gillian Anderson & Hannah Einbinder to Star in ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’
Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny in The X-Files (1993)
“X-Files” icon Gillian Anderson and “Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder are set to star in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, a “sleepover classic” horror movie from I Saw the TV Glow filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun, per THR.

Streamer and distributor Mubi, behind last year’s The Substance, will finance and distribute.

The film’s plot, revealed earlier this year by the New Yorker, follows “a queer filmmaker hired to direct a new installment of a long-running slasher franchise. The director fixates on the prospect of casting the ‘final girl ‘from the original movie, and the two women descend into a frenzy of psychosexual mania.”

“I make movies I wish existed when I was a kid,“ said Schoenbrun. “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is my best attempt at the ‘sleepover classic’: an insane yet cozy midnight odyssey that beckons to unsuspecting viewers from the horror section at the local video store.

The Witch (2015)
Elden Ring: Alex Garland to direct video game adaptation for A24?
The Witch (2015)
A24 is best known for releasing films like The Witch, The Florida Project, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Lady Bird, The Disaster Artist, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Lighthouse, Uncut Gems, Best Picture winners Moonlight and Everything Everywhere All at Once, etc. They’ve largely been considered to be an arthouse company – but we’ve known for a while now that they’re trying to shift their strategy from arthouse films to more commercial films, including action and big IP projects. This strategy includes the recently released war movie Warfare, Adam Wingard’s gonzo horror action movie Onslaught, the UFC movie The Smashing Machine, a Barney movie from Ayo Edebiri and Daniel Kaluuya, the Friday the 13th Peacock series Crystal Lake, which recently got Linda Cardellini to sign on to play Pamela Voorhees, and possibly even a Bloodsport remake. “We can confirm we’ve begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone,” reads the statement from Saber Interactive.

Kevin Bacon Thought His Career Would Never Recover After One Horror Movie
Image
Kevin Bacon has cropped up just about everywhere over the past five decades, from raucous teen comedies to Hollywood blockbusters ("Apollo 13") and challenging indie projects. Indeed, his roles have been so varied across so many genres that a whole game emerged called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon (you can try to beat it at The Oracle of Bacon). Yet there was a period in the 1980s when it wasn't going so well for the hard-working actor, to the extent that he thought one of his best-loved movies might totally tank his career.

That movie was Ron Underwood's "Tremors," a light-hearted yet suspenseful throwback to the classic creature features of the 1950s. Set in the tiny Nevada desert town of Perfection (Population: 14), Bacon starred as Val McKee, one half of a hapless handyman duo with his best friend, Earl Bassett (Fred Ward). Their attempt to move onto better things is...

10 Actors Who Only Accepted A Role For The Money
Image
Look, actors have to eat too, and all the arthouse and award season favorite projects they do aren't always going to pay the bills. To put it simply, just as we all do jobs that we don't necessarily feel personally invested in, actors can also take on work primarily for the associated salary. This distinction doesn't take away from the work itself, and certainly doesn't diminish our own feelings for it, but it serves as an amusing reminder of the value of the dollar. If anything, it helps humanize the actors involved with the knowledge that they too have to make their own ends meet.

Whether it's celebrated, award-winning actors or beloved character actors looking for the next project, regardless of the material, all actors play a role only for the money in their career. Many of these actors have been forthcoming about their primary motivation for joining a project,...

Wednesday 13 Counts Down His Top 10 Horror Movie Soundtracks
Image
In celebration of the release of his tenth album, Mid Death Crisis, horror rock icon Wednesday 13 gave Bloody Disgusting a rundown of his favorite horror soundtracks.

“They all strike an emotion within me,” The Duke of Spook tells us. “Horror movie soundtracks have provided me with endless satisfaction and are the soundtrack to my life and death.”

Without further ado, these are Wednesday 13’s top 10 horror movie soundtracks…

1. Halloween III: Season of the Witch

I love the music from the first two films, but part three just took it to the next level with the addition of Alan Howarth and John Carpenter. Just that little touch of the ’80s synth makes all the difference to me.

2. The Return of the Living Dead

I love the score to the film, however the soundtrack compilation with all of the punk rock tracks from T.S.O.L. to Rocky Erickson is my favorite mixtape.

The film will give modern audiences a new chance to witness the sick mind of West, the scientist who develops a serum that can bring corpses back to life. Herbert West: Reanimator was one of the first literary works to include "zombies" as reanimated corpses with uncontrollable urges.

As reported by Deadline, screenwriters Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe, of The Haunting in Connecticut fame, will write the script for the new project. They'll reunite with executive producer Andrew Trapani, who worked with them on The Haunting in Connecticut and also produced the horror film Winchester. A director is yet to be announced for the film.

Woodlake Entertainment is on board as the production studio behind the project.

'Sinners' Overtakes Every Underworld Film to Become One of the Biggest Vampire Movies Ever Made
Image
Having already become one of the 100 highest-grossing horror movies in domestic box office history, Ryan Coogler's Sinners is climbing up another list. It's now among the top 15 highest-grossing vampire movies ever made, having overtaken every film in the Underworld franchise. More impressively, it's set to drive a stake through the heart of none other than Morbius. Sinners achieved this feat in less than a week of release. The movie exceeded projections in its box office debut, and is expected to retain its crown in its sophomore frame. Widely hailed as a much-needed win for original, big-screen filmmaking, Sinners is the success story of the year so far.

With $64 million domestically and another $15 million from overseas markets, Sinners is passing the $80 million mark at the worldwide box office as we speak. It's set to break into the list of the 80 highest-grossing horror movies of all time when it overtakes The Purge,...

An iconic slasher franchise is finally returning soon as its prequel series begins production
Image
Can you believe it has been 16+ years since we last had a new entry into the Friday the 13th franchise? There have been no new movies or shows since the 2009 remake directed by Marcus Nispel. But that's finally about to change.

1428 Elm previously reported that Linda Cardellini had been chosen to play Pamela Voorhees in A24's prequel series Crystal Lake. Now, the show has finally gone into pre-production. It has been a long and bumpy road to get to this point, with a previous version of Crystal Lake from showrunner Bryan Fuller getting scrapped due to alleged creative differences between parties. For a while, it didn't seem likely that the series would happen.

But on April 22, showrunner Brad Caleb Kane took to Instagram to announce that the production offices are open.

A24's 'Friday the 13th' Prequel Series 'Crystal Lake' Starts Pre-Production
Image
The Friday the 13th franchise hasn't stalked our horror fans, big screen or otherwise, in sixteen years, but there is reason to rejoice with real movement for the brand that has been plagued with delays due to legal issues and behind-the-scenes turmoil. This isn't a rumor or wishful thinking at this point, because the IP is preparing to make a return, and this latest news will have fans breaking out their hockey masks to celebrate.

Per a post on Instagram, Brad Caleb Kane, the showrunner for the upcoming Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake, confirmed with an image of the production draft script that things are moving forward on the show and that pre-production has begun on the A24 prequel series. The script image shows that Kane wrote the production draft, and the copyright belongs to Camp Blood LLC. Crystal Lake is based on the characters created by Victor Miller...

Crystal Lake: Friday the 13th TV series moves forward; production offices are now open
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Friday the 13th (1980)
On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. Things were moving ahead at a good pace, filming was expected to begin last July, but then the project hit a speed bump at the end of April with the firing of Fuller and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray. Things got back on track in late August with the hiring of a new showrunner – and that person is Brad Caleb Kane, who also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry,...

Long-Delayed 'Friday the 13th' Prequel Series, 'Crystal Lake,' Finally Gets an Encouraging Production Update
Image
Grab your bags and make sure you grab something strong enough to hold off a machete — Crystal Lake has finally begun production. That’s right, the very first series spin-off of the Friday the 13th franchise has cameras picked up and ready to roll, with series showrunner, Brad Caleb Kane, taking to his social media to share the wonderful yet horrific news.

In an Instagram post captioned “Crystal Lake Production offices are live. It’s all happening. MacHetes For Everyone!” Kane shared an image of a desk filled with Friday the 13th-themed material. On the right is a folder that features a sticker of the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, while next to it sits a script for presumably the pilot. Written on the script, we can see the production company, A24, scrawled across in large letters, while Kane’s name is listed as the scribe. The script also gives credit to Victor Miller,...

Sixteen years after the most recent installment in the franchise and in the wake of years worth of legal battles and behind the scenes issues, the Friday the 13th franchise is finally making its way back into our lives with “Crystal Lake,” and series showrunner Brad Caleb Kane (“Welcome to Derry”) has updated us on the production over on Instagram tonight.

Brad Caleb Kane posted a photo of a “Crystal Lake” production draft script on Instagram and announced that the show’s production offices are now opened up for business!

Based on characters created by original Friday the 13th (1980) writer Victor Miller, the script in the photograph was written by Brad Caleb Kane himself, and the copyright is registered to “Camp Blood LLC.” It’s likely this means that pre-production has begun, with production gearing up to kick off soon. Every Character Who Has Survived The Final Destination Movies
Image
This article contains spoilers for every "Final Destination" movie.

For over 25 years, the "Final Destination" series has instilled a very special fear of death with audiences. Everyone meets their end at some point or another, but these movies take perverse pleasure in showing all of the grisly manners it can manifest. Unlike other horror franchises like "Friday the 13th" or "Scream," where you can physically see the killer coming toward you, in the world of "Final Destination," Death can take the form of just about anything. All it takes is a loose screw, a curling iron, or a creep with a box full of hook hands to get the ball rolling.

It's very fitting for a franchise about a deadly omniscient presence to make you anxious of your surroundings at all times. But try as they might, the characters in every "Final Destination" usually meet a grisly end one way or another.

Sweetest Day: slasher movie cast includes Catherine Corcoran, Russell Todd, & Kelli Maroney
Image
In areas scattered throughout the United States, the third Saturday of every October is considered to be Sweetest Day, a holiday of sorts where you’re meant to “share romantic deeds or expressions, and acts of charity and kindness.” Plus sweets. Now, Deadline reports that Sweetest Day has been given the holiday slasher treatment by director Doug Hawley, who assembled a cast that includes Dorée Seay (Pens and Pencils), Alex MacNicoll (Brilliant Minds), Chris Labadie (If It Bleeds), Nate Boyer (The Terminal List), Deborah S. Craig (Meet Cute), Morgana Shaw (Hit Man), Andy Davoli (Stiletto), Russell Todd (Friday the 13th Part 2), Kelli Maroney (Chopping Mall), and Catherine Corcoran (Terrifier) to bring the story to life.

Hawley makes his feature debut with Sweetest Day, which sees Seay taking on the role of ‘survivor girl’ Mindy as she prepares for the battle of her life against the undead confederate soldier that nearly killed her once before.

Kevin Bacon Doesn't Love Signing 'Friday the 13th' Memorabilia With His Death Face
Image
Kevin Bacon, the star of films like Stir of Echoes, Mystic River, and A Few Good Men, had one of his first roles in the classic horror flick Friday the 13th. Bacon recently addressed his short appearance in the 1980 movie that spawned a franchise, and it seems that he is, after all, proud of one of his earliest movies. However, there's one thing that he doesn't love about his legacy in the slasher franchise. We'll give you a hint: You may want to think twice before asking the actor for an autograph using Friday the 13th material.

Bacon recently appeared in an interview with Variety, where he had to guess his lines from his films. Bacon guessed most of them, but when it came to Friday the 13th, he had some doubts about the dialogue. "It's gonna tear down that valley like a son of a gun," the card read,...

Jason Voorhees Actor Refused to Kick a Dog for a Scene Because Even the Serial Killer from Friday the 13th Is “Not evil enough to hurt animals”
Image
Kane Hodder was the actor responsible for bringing the character of Jason Voorhees to life in multiple Friday the 13th film. The character of Jason is known to be one of the most ruthless horror antagonists in Hollywood’s horror canon.

However, there was one scene that did not make it into any of the final cuts of the film, where Jason was expected to kick a dog. While the character has no issues with claiming lives and hurting human beings, Hodder asked the creators to pause for thought when it came to this kind of behavior.

According to the actor, while Jason took lives with glee when it came to humans, he was not so evil that he would find any sort of joy in hurting a dog. And so, he decided against it, telling the creators of the film that he would refuse to do it.

Kane Hodder...

Blood in Zero G as ‘Jason X’ Returns to Kill Again
Image
Horror meets hyperspace in Jason X, the long-misunderstood 2001 entry in the Friday the 13th franchise, which is returning in a newly restored 4K Ultra HD edition on 19 May. Often dismissed on its original release for its outrageous setting and campy tone, Jason X has since found its audience as a gory cult gem with a fondness for creative kills, gleeful absurdity, and one of the most bonkers franchise pivots in horror history.

Directed by veteran special effects artist Jim Isaac, who previously worked on Gremlins and eXistenZ, Jason X transports the hockey-masked killer far beyond Crystal Lake and into deep space. It’s the year 2455 and Earth has been rendered uninhabitable. A crew of students and scientists investigating the now-desolate planet stumbles upon the frozen remains of Jason Voorhees in a ruined facility near the former site of the infamous summer camp. Naturally, they bring the corpse aboard their spaceship,...

'We Blew It': Final Destination Writer Names 1 Big Mistake Made With the Horror Franchise's Concept
Image
Final Destination is one of horror history's most successful franchises, set to have another sequel coming out 25 years after the original movie's release. There's been a lot of money that's been made with the past installments of the movie series, though there could have been much more if not for one fatal flaw with the concept of an unseen "Death" as the killer.

While the types of tragedies differ, the concept of every Final Destination movie is the same: a group of would-be victims narrowly escape certain death thanks to the warning of one person who has a premonition of the event moments before it happens. However, Death doesn't like to be cheated, and an invisible force works to kill the survivors by manipulating their surrounding environments. There's no telling when and how Death might come for the characters, which adds to the suspense, though it also meant missing out on major merchandise revenue.

Excited for 'Crystal Lake'? Neca Just Added Pamela Voorhees to Their 'Friday the 13th' Figure Collection
Image
The slasher sub-genre has been on fire lately with iconic franchises like Scream and Halloween returning in grand bloody fashion. One major series that has sadly been left out of the maddening fun has been Friday the 13th. Jason Voorhees has been rotting at the bottom of Crystal Lake for the last decade and a half thanks to a massive rights battle. However, Friday the 13th’s first new entry since 2009, the prequel TV series Crystal Lake, will soon be making horror fans scream again. Now, as we wait for Jason's deadly comeback, his mother is ready with a frightening new action figure.

A part of Neca’s popular seven-inch-scale “Ultimate” horror collection, Pamela Voorheesis armed to the teeth as she prepares to get vengeance for her late son. The character features multiple interchangeable hands and heads, an ax, a machete, a bow with an assortment of arrows, a hunting knife,...

Jason Returns in Hellish 4K from Arrow Video
Image
One of the wildest, most divisive entries in the Friday the 13th franchise is being resurrected in style this spring, as Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday arrives in a feature-packed, Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD on 19 May 2025. Courtesy of a newly restored dual-cut release, fans can now revisit the gonzo ninth instalment of the series with the sharpest image and most complete behind-the-scenes archive yet.

First unleashed in 1993 and directed by Adam Marcus, Jason Goes to Hell boldly took the franchise into supernatural territory, tossing out the traditional Crystal Lake stalk-and-slash formula in favour of something far stranger. After Jason Voorhees is seemingly obliterated by a Swat-style ambush in the film’s opening minutes, his spirit lives on, possessing one unlucky soul after another in a relentless, body-swapping quest to be reborn.

The result is a slasher that plays more like a mad science fiction-horror hybrid, gleefully loaded with gore,...

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, the fifth film in the Friday the 13th franchise, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year – and JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was recently able to catch up with Melanie Kinnaman, who played the film’s heroine, at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California! Ryan talked with Kinnaman about her experience working on the classic slasher, and you can watch the interview in the video embedded above.

Directed by Danny Steinmann, who also crafted the screenplay with Martin Kitrosser and David Cohen, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning has the following synopsis: Years after Tommy Jarvis murdered hockey-masked serial killer Jason Voorhees, he resides in a mental hospital and struggles with the trauma of the experience.
