CNN Films announced today it is producing an “authorized yet unfiltered documentary” of comedian Chevy Chase named for one of his most famous “Saturday Night Live” catch phrases, “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not.”
Marina Zenovich, a two-time Emmy winner for “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired” as well as films like “Lance” and “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind,” is directing the biographical doc about Chase, and CNN plans to release the film in 2026. Specific details about the film’s release weren’t announced, but it’s expected the film will be available on CNN platforms and later on HBO Max.
“I understand CNN is going to release a documentary about me. I’m delighted and I hope I’m in it,” Chase said in a statement.

I didn’t arrive late to the climate change party — in fact, I was invited by Don Henley himself. In the late ’80s, my husband, Chevy Chase, and I were gifted a book from Don: The End of Nature, by Bill McKibben. That book cracked something wide open in me.
Chevy and I met in 1980, and I was already activated. By 1983, somewhat buried articles about how much energy we use and how much we throw away here in the U.S. made me feel I had to do something.
I felt compelled to educate myself and do whatever I could to share what I learned. I gravitated toward like-minded moms in Pacific Palisades and we began building what became The Center for Environmental Education. Dr. Tom Lovejoy — the man who literally coined the term “biodiversity” — and Denis Hayes, the founder of Earth Day, are just two of the several dedicated...

Harmony Korine is hard to pin down: Stylistically, ideologically, and even rhetorically. While leading a Q&a with him before a mostly teenage and 20-something crowd at the Ringling College of Art and Design at the Sarasota Film Festival on April 12, that quickly became apparent.
Like he was once again appearing on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” as he did frequently in the 1990s, Korine gave some amusing answers — maybe non-answers.
What inspired his latest film, “Baby Invasion“? “I’d seen this Phil Collins video, and I just remember watching it, and I had been drinking Mountain Dew and eating Skittles, and I was playing a lot of Tetris, and the movie just came to me.”
What made him fall in love with Florida, where he’s made his recent movies and has headquartered his company Edglrd? “Strip malls. I was investing in this company that just builds strip malls,...

The 1980s was a heady time that found Bill Murray first experimenting (unsuccessfully) with dramatic acting. After SNL, Caddyshack, Meatballs, and 1981's Stripes launched him into stardom, Murray took a chance with an elevated project of sorts: an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's 1944 novel, The Razor's Edge. The film was a box office bomb, making just half of its budget, and was derided by critics. Murray wouldn't give another dramatic lead performance in years. But there's an alternate timeline in which Murray leads a blockbuster war movie directed by Clint Eastwood in the '80s.
Murray, who can be seen in the new films Riff Raff and The Friend, went on the Howard Stern Show on Siriux Xm and shared the surprising story of his close call with a Clint collaboration. "A long time ago, I was watching the Clint Eastwood movies of the day, like Thunderbolt and Lightfoot,...

As TV shows go, "The Office" is a goldmine of endless trivia, as evidenced by the fact that multiple former stars have started podcasts breaking down the series since it went off the air in 2013. The "Office Ladies" podcast is hosted by Pam and Angela actors Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, while Kevin actor Brian Baumgartner hosted the podcast "An Oral History of The Office" before spinning that off into yet another podcast "The Office Deep Dive with Brian Baumgartner." Each of these retrospectives are must-listen resources for fans of the original series, as they provide exhaustive insights into how the show was produced, revealing every bit of behind-the-scenes trivia you could possibly want -- and there's a heck of a lot of it.
One particularly interesting aspect of these series is that it allows the former cast members to reminisce about some of the series' high-profile directors. Throughout its nine-season run,...

Fans of Ghostbusters comedy legend Harold Ramis will be able to stream his last-ever movie next month. The filmmaker's final directorial effort before his death in 2014 was the prehistoric comedy Year One.
Even some of Ramis' biggest fans may have missed Year One since it under-performed in theaters in 2009, and was largely dismissed by critics. Hulu subscribers will get to decide for themselves about whether Year One was wrongfully ignored when it becomes available to stream on April 1, 2025.
Year One Comes to Hulu in April
Jack Black and Michael Cera starred in Ramis' spoof of the biblical Book of Exodus, as two primitives traveling to the sin-filled village of Sodom to save their love interests (June Diane Raphael and Juno Temple). The comedy boasted a hugely impressive cast, including a Superbad reunion for Cera with co-star Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Bill Hader, Olivia Wilde, Paul Rudd and David Cross all featured in Year One too.

Remember that comedy show that had everyone talking last year? You know, the one where James Marsden played himself while some poor, unsuspecting guy thought he was on a real jury? Well, guess what? Jury Duty is officially returning for Season 2, and here’s the kicker—it’s already been filmed!
Yep, you read that right. While we’ve all been wondering if we’d ever see a follow-up to Amazon’s breakout hit, the production team has been secretly working away, wrapping up an entirely new season.

Originally on Freevee, the Emmy-nominated series has moved to Prime Video following Amazon’s platform reshuffling last November. Talk about keeping things under wraps! This documentary-style comedy that captured our hearts with its unique premise is about to surprise us all over again, but this time, we’re trading courtroom drama for corporate shenanigans.

Over three decades after the release of the classic film Groundhog Day, actor Bill Murray has opened up about a memorable on-set incident involving his furry co-star.
During a recent appearance on First We Feast's "Hot Ones" to promote his exciting new movie Riff Raff, Murray showcased a scar on his finger, attributing it to bites from the groundhog during filming. "I'm not flipping you off, but that right there, that nodule there, that's from the groundhog," Murray explained, displaying his middle finger. "He got me back to back, two days in a row. And the second day, I thought I was being smart, and I put some fisherman's gloves, like steel gloves on, underneath the gloves I was wearing. His teeth went right through the steel."

There aren’t many filmmakers who have reshaped the comedy genre as significantly as Harold Ramis, who is responsible for many of the funniest films ever made. Although Ramis epitomized the peak of the post-Saturday Night Live era of the 1980s with classics like Caddyshack, Stripes, and Vacation, he would continue to experiment throughout his career with the science fiction caper Multiplicity and the crime satire Analyze This. While there have been some comedic icons whose relevance faded over time because of their inability (or unwillingness) to evolve their sense of humor, Ramis was able to continuously make bold choices that indicated how ahead of his time he was. Ramis directed the hilariously grim neo-noir comedy The Ice Harvest, which may be one of the darkest Christmas films ever made.

Amazon Freevee's Jury Duty was the surprise hit of 2023. The show plunged a single unsuspecting participant, Ronald Gladden, into an entirely fake courtroom with actors and secret cameras filming the bonkers case. The series managed to maintain the secret for all eight episodes and kept viewers engaged to the very end, desperate to see Ronald's reaction to the ruse. You might think a show like that can only work once. But, the series has just been greenlit for a second season. Just don't expect to return to the courtroom.
Per Deadline,Jury Duty is returning for a second season, with the show's return moving in a completely new direction. 'But, now that people know a second season is coming, how will they maintain the mystery?' we hear you ask. Well, not to worry, because according to the report, the new season has already been shot and is currently in post-production.

One of the comedy breakouts of 2023 was Jury Duty, a documentary-style comedy for Amazon Freevee that featured James Marsden and other actors surrounding an unsuspecting juror at a trial. The Emmy-nominated comedy is back and — surprise — its second season is already in the can, sources tell Deadline. It will run on Prime Video where Freevee’s content migrated after Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming platform was shut down last November.
Details are being kept under wraps but we hear that the theme of the new installment is David vs. Goliath. Taking inspiration from classic 1980s movies such as Animal House and Caddyshack, it is about a small business going on a company retreat, with the real, unsuspecting person tested when a Goliath suddenly shows up, sources said.

Rodney Dangerfield’s whole act is predicated on the idea that he gets no respect, which obviously wasn’t true. Dangerfield was a beloved comedian, a successful film actor and a one-time board game star.
But Dangerfield’s comedy catchphrase became depressingly accurate during his dealings with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1994, the Back to School star applied to become a member of the Academy, after his name was submitted by actor and friend Leonard Gaines. When others expressed surprise at the idea of making Dangerfield a member of the Academy, Gaines believed that he was “doing the Academy a favor” by inviting a huge star like Dangerfield.
As the L.A. Times pointed out at the time, Dangerfield met the criteria to join, with “major parts in at least three theatrical releases to his credit.” He also presented an award at the 1987 Oscars and killed.

The Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown was recently nominated for eight Academy Awards. But just think of how many more nominations it would have gotten had the filmmakers included a scene in which Dylan shares a bed with the future star of Caddyshack.
As odd as it may sound, this scene wasn’t totally off the table, seeing as how Chase once claimed to have spent the night with the legendary musician.
During an episode of the short-lived Netflix talk show Norm Macdonald Has a Show, the late comedian, and Bob Dylan superfan, asked Chase if he had any good Dylan stories. His response was more than a little surprising: “I slept with him.”
Chase went on to explain that he was attending Bard College at the time, just across the river from his hometown of Woodstock, New York. “He comes over, and he’s trying to teach himself the piano,...

While it may not be a laugh riot in the vein of “Caddyshack” the recently released “One of Them Days,” Brady Corbet’s awards-buzzy “The Brutalist” does indirectly offer its own kind of twisted humor. Following a Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor as he rebuilds his life in post-wwii America, the film carries dark overtones throughout as his efforts to pursue his craft are often thwarted by his cruel, bigoted benefactor, played by Guy Pearce. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Pearce acknowledged the serious of the subject matter, while at the same time pointing out how certain scenes can’t help but elicit laughs from the audience.

While Chevy Chase definitely won’t be in the upcoming Community movie — unless one of the characters happens to pull out a photo of their dead friend who masturbated himself into an early grave several years ago — its cast members are still fielding questions about the Caddyshack star.
Joel McHale recently appeared on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, and while McHale never appeared on Saturday Night Live, his relationship with Chevy was obviously an area of interest for the two former SNLers.
Spade asked if Chase’s bad behavior on the set of Community was “more of a rumor, or was he a bit of a pickle?” — possibly because Spade hasn’t used the internet in the past 11 years. “I’ve never answered any questions about him,” McHale joked before going on to describe just how frustrating Chase was to work with.

The list of classic Bill Murray comedies sometimes feels endless and is even a bit daunting to wrap your brain around. From Groundhog Day to Stripes to Caddyshack to Ghostbusters, the brilliant jester has a resumé of hits longer than your arm. During the same era as all of these memorable sidesplitting offerings, another well-written comedy that Murray co-directed somehow got lost in the shuffle. In 1990, alongside Howard Franklin, Murray was behind the camera directing himself, Geena Davis, Randy Quaid, and the legendary Jason Robards in Quick Change. It's not completely clear how this laugh-out-loud film slipped through the cracks, but with a score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, it is one of his most highly regarded and complete films in a career that includes over 50 movies. Let us make the case why it is worth a couple of hours out of your busy schedule to enjoy on a Saturday night...

Bill Murray may be best known for his larger-than-life comedy performances in movies such as Groundhog Day and Caddyshack, as well as the droll and sarcastic Peter Venkman in the Ghostbusters franchise. However, in 2019, he starred in his second zombie comedy (after his brilliant cameo in Woody Harrelson’s Zombieland franchise) with Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die. Now the financial and critical disappointment is shuffling its way onto Netflix on December 16.
While a quirky and completely deadpan approach to the zombie genre, which seemed to have a lot of promise from its premise and leading cast, which also includes Adam Driver, the blend of horror, comedy and a lot of social commentary ended up being even more lifeless than the undead creatures it features. Jarmusch’s deep dive into environmental issues in the guise of a slow-moving dark comedy really failed to connect with either audiences or critics,...

Chevy Chase's 35-year-old Christmas comedy cements its status as an iconic holiday movie with its latest streaming success. After becoming the breakout star of the first season of Saturday Night Live during the 1970s, Chase left the sketch show in its second season and went on to become a comedic lead, starring in some of the most successful comedies of the 1980s. These include Caddyshack, Caddyshack II, Fletch, Fletch Lives, Oh! Heavenly Dog, Modern Problems, Spies Like Us, and Three Amigos.
One of Chase's most successful comedy ventures of the 1980s was the National Lampoon's Vacation movies, starting with the 1983 film. Inspired by John Hughes' short story Vacation '58 originally published in National Lampoon magazine, the films follow the chaotic misadventures of the Griswold family and their well-meaning yet hapless patriarch, Clark Griswold, whose attempts to create the perfect vacations for his family spiral into disastrous and hilariously awkward situations.

As Saturday Night Live marks its 50th season, Bill Murray hopes to have a homecoming soon.
The Oscar nominee said he’d “certainly” like to return as a host for its current milestone season, defending the NBC sketch comedy show’s current creative team against criticism.
“People always give me a hard time about, ‘Oh, the original show was so great and it’s lousy now,'” Murray said on the New Heights podcast. “And I say, ‘No, it’s not.’ The show that’s on now, they do stuff that’s just as good as anybody ever did, all the time.”
Before his beloved roles in Caddyshack (1980), Stripes (1981) and Ghostbusters (1984), Murray was a writer and cast member on SNL from 1977 to 1980. He was known for such characters as Dick Lanky, Francis Jocko Leary Jr. and Honker. The actor has since hosted the show five times.

Bill Murray appeared on Travis and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast (via The Daily Beast) and defended the current cast of “Saturday Night Live” from critics who say the show has gotten “lousy.” Murray was an “SNL” cast member from 1977 to 1980 before making the jump to movie star with comedy hits like “Caddyshack,” “Stripes” and “Ghostbusters” in the early ’80s.

National Lampoon's Vacation is a vintage comedy franchise beginning in the 1980s, though the lack of numerals makes it tricky to know which order to view them in. Chevy Chase is a comedy icon, which was clear from his appearances on the first season of Saturday Night Live. Chase went on to a string of movie hits, including Foul Play, Caddyshack, and Fletch. Unfortunately, Chase also has a reputation for being difficult to work with, so after a string of duds in the '90s, he was largely relegated to supporting roles or cameos.
Still, his movie star heyday yielded some classics, including National Lampoon's Vacation. Directed by Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day) and written by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club), the film detailed a disastrous family vacation, led by Chase's optimistic patriarch, Clark Griswold. The Vacation movies became a reliable franchise for Chase and co-star Beverly D'Angelo, with both returning...

In the late 1970s and early '80s, a new wave of comedy was taking over with Hollywood's rising stars like Ivan Reitman, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis. Reitman had already found success in 1979 with Meatballs, which was co-written by Ramis and starred Murray, who was already a well-known name thanks to being a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Murray also starred in Caddyshack, which was written and directed by Ramis as well.

With its ’70s-era production details and sprawling age-spanning ensemble, Saturday Night has high hopes for the Oscars this year. But if the Jason Reitman period piece manages to win one, it will achieve something that the cast it depicts never could.
Though Saturday Night Live has racked up a record-breaking 103 Emmys and churned out generational talent with regularity over its 50 seasons, only six among its more than 150 castmembers have ever been nominated for an Oscar (five if you don’t include one-episode-and-done player Laurie Metcalf).
Its only winner? Robert Downey Jr., just this past March for Oppenheimer. And his 1985-86 SNL stint is a career footnote.
“I don’t think it’s conscious,” says Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger, an Oscar prognosticator and author of 50 Oscar Nights, “but there might be something going on. There’s obviously a disconnect between SNL and [film] awards.”

Robert Downey Jr. earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards for playing Kirk Lazarus/"Sergeant Lincoln Osiris" in "Tropic Thunder." (Though it took 15 years and "Oppenheimer" for him to cinch the Oscar.)
Rdj's performance as the self-involved Lazarus — an actor who takes his craft so seriously he'll get surgical blackface — is indeed a highlight. It's the most transgressive part of "Tropic Thunder," but no matter how offensive it can look out of context, it's executed with purpose in the film, not hate (except towards method actors).
Only one other part in "Tropic Thunder" rivals Rdj as Lazarus; Tom Cruise as short-tempered studio executive Les Grossman. Even more so than "Collateral" (which makes Cruise's steely screen presence sinister), Cruise's Grossman performance attests to his surprising range. In "Tropic Thunder," Cruise's movie star good looks are concealed beneath balding, burly makeup and he acts nothing like he usually does.

There are few programs in American history that were as foundational in the development of modern comedy films as Saturday Night Live, which, in its first iteration, saw the emergence of stars like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and Jim Henson. However, there isnt another performer that encapsulated the tone and spirit of the Saturday Night Live generation like John Belushi, who briefly became one of the biggest stars in the world thanks to his hilarious performances in Caddyshack and The Blues Brothers. While he seemed poised to have a career that could last decades, Belushi tragically died of a drug overdose in 1982. However, one of Belushis last roles was the charming romantic comedy Continental Divide.

Redditor Pale_Willingness_415 has been wondering about a certain comedian for years. Sure, Chevy Chase has a terrible reputation for being difficult. “But is the common perception that he was just always a jerk or did he change because of fame”?
The folks in the r/LiveFromNewYork subreddit were happy to weigh in.
Spoiler alert: The first option was the runaway winner. “Based on everything we know about SNL Season One, he was always a jerk,” posted user JacedFaced, “and then he got worse once he started to think he was solely responsible for inventing modern comedy.”
“People who worked with him 50 years ago haven’t worked with him in 50 years, even when they made money with him,” argued user pqln. “That tells me he was like this from the start of SNL.”

Quentin Tarantino loves bastards, inglorious or otherwise. And the worst thing a movie can do, in his opinion, is redeem those a-holes.
“If you make a movie about a fucking bastard, you could bet that fucking bastard would see the error of their ways and be redeemed in the last 20 minutes,” Tarantino writes in his book of essays, Cinema Speculation. “Like, for example, all of Bill Murray’s characters.”
Whoa — what did Murray’s cinematic smart-asses do to catch the back of Tarantino’s hand?
The same thing countless other comedy characters have done throughout movie history: Start out irresponsible and reckless, then learn a few lessons over the course of the story to become a better person.

James Cameron is the unquestioned king of the box office. "Avatar" is, by a considerable margin, the highest-grossing movie of all time and, before all's said and done, it could be the only movie in history to touch $3 billion worldwide. Cameron also owns two of the other spots in the top four globally with "Avatar: The Way of Water" and "Titanic." He's been doing it on the biggest scale for a long, long time. But it certainly didn't start out that way. Early on, the blockbuster maestro was simply looking for a way to meaningfully break into Hollywood.

Saturday Night is being praised as one of Ivan Reitman's best films in years, and a key reason for this critical acclaim is an impeccable ensemble cast. One such member of the cast that really stands out is Cory Michael Smith, who expertly replicates the personality and mannerisms of one of Saturday Night Live's most recognizable (and controversial) cast members, Chevy Chase. Following his tenure on SNL, Chevy Chase became a comedic icon in the entertainment industry, starring in such all-time classics as Caddyshack, Three Amigos, and the Vacation franchise. There's a sequence in Saturday Night where Dave Tebet (Willem Dafoe) has a quick conversation with Chevy about him eventually becoming the star of his own show. He'd be correct, but in just about the worst way possible.

In the movie Saturday Night, audiences get a sneak peek into the chaotic process of putting the first episode of Saturday Night Live on the air, but there's curiousity about what happened to the original cast afterward. Saturday Night is a historical comedy directed by Jason Reitman and led by a massively star-studded cast, including Gabriel Labelle, Dylan O'Brien, Rachel Sennott, Willem Dafoe, J.K. Simmons, and more. The movie revolves around the real life sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live, which has been airing consistently since 1975. The film shows Lorne Michaels' struggle to make the show happen.
A major aspect of Saturday Night is the cast. Nowadays, audiences recognize members of Saturday Night Live's cast to be some of the best comedians of their generation. However, this was not the case during the show's first season. Michaels hired relatively unknown performers who NBC had very little faith in. They...

With the show entering its 50th season during its September premiere -- which brought Emmy-winning "Hacks" star Jean Smart on board as a host -- and a major election this year providing plenty of material week after week, more eyes are on Lorne Michaels' 90-minute late-night show than ever. Known for his smug, bemused sense of humor, Chevy Chase became famous for a series of highly profitable comedies. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in New York in 1943, Chase turned to comedy after a series of odd jobs. After a short stint with the “National Lampoon,” he shot to stardom in 1975 as one of the original Not Ready for Primetime Players on “Saturday Night Live.” In its first season, Chase became famous both for his pratfalls and his Gerald Ford impersonation. He was also the initial host of “Weekend Update,” starting each week with the catchphrase, “I’m Chevy Chase, and you’re not.”
After winning Emmys for writing and performing in 1976, Chase left “SNL” after one year to pursue a movie career (he was replaced by Bill Murray). He earned Golden Globe nominations as Best Comedy/Musical Actor...

Long before the days of Prime Video's current Emmy darlings and box office draws, some quainter, more quietly brilliant projects were being pumped out. Bill Murray first came to national attention when he joined “Saturday Night Live” in its second season to replace the departed Chevy Chase. Like many of his SNL colleagues of the era Murray was able to parlay his television success into a film career. He first made his film mark in comedies but in later years would take on increasingly dramatic films as well, earning an Oscar nomination as Best Actor for “Lost in Translation” (2003). Murray would return to TV in 2015 for the HBO limited series “Olive Kitteridge,” for which he won an Emmy as Best Supporting Actor playing a suicidal man who becomes involved with the title character (Frances McDormand).

Cult classics come in many forms, and many great movies of the 1980s went overlooked, only to be hailed as influential and important today. There are plenty of 1980s comedy movies that no one remembers, and the same can be said for most genres, no matter the decade. However, several films have gained cult status but have been reevaluated through a contemporary lens because of their dated elements. Most movies have problems, no matter when they were filmed, and this doesn't mean they're not worth watching, but context might change the meaning of some scenes.
Controversial and intense subjects have a place in cinema, but characterizing them well and not perpetuating stereotypes is an important aspect of filmmaking.
Every decade has its pitfalls, as plenty of cult classic movies from the 1990s have aged poorly as well. Some problems with...

Caddyshack is among the most beloved of comedies. It’s endlessly quoted, referenced and parodied, its array of colorful goofballs embedded in our collective consciousness. But who’s the film’s main character? It’s not Bill Murray’s Carl Spackler, Ted Knight’s Elihu Smails, Rodney Dangerfield’s Al Czervik or Chevy Chase’s Ty Webb. No, the man who drives the action is actually Danny.

The actor who played Danny did such a good job that you tend to forget him. But as the film celebrates its 44th anniversary,...

The "Jaws" maestro was Universal Pictures' in-house wunderkind, so when he flipped out over "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," a raucous comedy, written by Zemeckis and his creative partner Bob Gale, about a trio of young girls desperate to attend the live taping of The Beatles' first performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," the studio greenlit it -- even though Zemeckis was completely untested as a feature director.
Five years later, Zemeckis' was very close to finished in Hollywood.
With a budget of $2.8 million, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" wasn't considered a gamble. And when it lost money for Universal, the studio didn't sweat it. But...
