The two main characters of the movie are cousins, and as the movie progresses, they fall in love, have sex, and make a baby by chance. In the 19th century when the movie took place, it was considered normal for first cousins to marry.
There are several sex scenes through the movie some more graphic than others, despite Brooke Shields being a minor at the time, the scenes are overly graphic. After these scenes, there is generally kissing, hugging, them laying on each other, touching and kissing various parts of their bodies, specifically when Emmeline is slowly kissing down Richard's bare chest. But also scenes with them giving each other hickeys.
Richard (Christopher Atkins) gets out of the sea naked and walks toward the camera. His whole body is silhouetted; however, his penis and scrotum are quite visible.
