In real life, as stated in the film, the ultimate fate of the three escapees has never been conclusively determined -- no bodies were found. Shortly after a fishing boat saw a body and the men claimed that the corpse was dressed in prison clothing and looked like Frank Morris, but they did not bring the body into the boat. Later, a body in the same area was discovered but DNA tests proved it was not any of the prisoners. Personal valuables belonging to the brothers were found by the raft and it is unlikely that they would have left them behind, but as stated in the film they could have been left behind to throw off any chase. There have been unconfirmed reports of sightings of the men. The show MythBusters did recreate the escape using the exact same materials they had access to, and found that it was possible for the three to have made to land from Alcatraz Island.
