In season four episode 21, the Devils triangle, Mr. Roarke explains that the plane went down in an area known as the Devils triangle which is very close to Fantasy Island. This would obviously put fantasy Island in the Atlantic ocean very close to the Caribbean. References throughout the show, especially when it comes to planes flying over or to the island, make it clear it's in the Atlantic. The overhead shots of the island and of the waterfalls are of course from the Hawaiian Islands. That being the case it's the only reason I can think of the people often say it's in the Pacific. -------------------------------------- Exotic island hodgepodge: although the show never disclaimed where Fantasy Island is supposed to be located, the set decor is decidedly Caribbean and very reminiscent of the Bahamas with its white buildings---particularly telling is Mr. Roarke's gazebo-in-the-sky, where Tattoo rings the bell, notwithstanding its real Arcadia location---and also Mr. Roarke's white rattan throne, which is a staple in many Caribbean islands. Montalban's white suit, and the guests outfits (many of whom are wearing Bermuda shorts) all contribute to the Caribbean look. However, the dancers who greet the plane disembarking guests are always dressed in costumes typical from Tahiti, with the skirts made of brown fibers (so-called "grass" skirts), with matching hats and fiber pompoms. The music played while they dance is a mixture of Tahitian drums and the Hawaiian ukulele, but the female dancers invariably perform the tamuré---which is the national dance from Tahiti. This mixture of cultures was done on purpose, so that the real location is both not revealed but inconsequential.
