When Anthony Anderson was looking for someone to play his onscreen dad in his sitcom All About the Andersons, he knew exactly who he wanted: TV legend John Amos. The Emmy-nominated actor (who died in August 2024) was well known for roles such as Kunta Kinte in Roots and Good Times dad James Evans Sr. But for Anderson, the desire to cast Amos came from a more personal place, he says in the Oct. 29 episode of Black Comedy in America.
John Amos reminded Anthony Anderson of his dad
“John Amos reminded me of my dad,” he says in a clip from the Vice TV docuseries, which explores the Black comedic pioneers of film, television, and the standup scene. “And that’s why I cast John Amos as my father in my first show that I created, All About the Andersons.”
All About the Andersons premiered in 2003 and aired for one season on The WB.

Who doesn’t love LeVar Burton? He was Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Chief Engineer Geordi Laforge, Kunta Kinte in the acclaimed ‘70s TV miniseries Roots and, of course, he taught generations of kids that reading is cool, so long as it’s on television.
This week, the Reading Rainbow host was presented with a National Humanities Medal, which “honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation’s understanding of the humanities,” for his “acting and literacy advocacy work.” The medal was presented to Burton during a private ceremony at the White House.
Despite the fact that he’s now been feted by the President of the United States, some people are still quizzing Burton about a silly show that once explored the corpo-humanization of the Subway empire.

Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"
You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

LeVar Burton shared his thoughts on the late John Amos during an appearance on ABC’s The View today, praising his Roots costar – they played the enslaved person Kunta Kinte at different points in the character’s life – for his groundbreaking TV portrayal on Good Times.
“James Evans, the character that John played on Good Times, was the first Black man as householder on TV,” Burton said. “The whole family, the father making it work for the family. When I was coming up Black men were generally portrayed as absent fathers, shiftless, fodder for prison and criminals. And John Amos changed that. May his name forever be blessed.”
“And it will,” responded View moderator Whoopi Goldberg.
Amos died August 21 at the age of 84. His death was announced on October 1 by his son Kelly Christopher Amos. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office, Amos died of congestive heart failure.

The passing of John Amos has been a reminder of his historic starring role in one of the more unlikely Disney live-action hits ever!
The news that John Amos died in August at the age of 84 has led to some looks back at his long acting career. Breaking out as weatherman Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Amos took the lead role in the hit comedy Good Times. John Amos, best known for his Emmy-nominated role as the older Kunta Kinte in the 1977 miniseries “Roots,” has died at 84.
He was also known for playing patriarch James Evans Sr. on the CBS sitcom “Good Times.”
TheWrap spoke with the actor, as well as his late “Roots” costar Louis Gossett Jr, in 2022 for the anniversary of the landmark miniseries. The miniseries won nine Emmys out of a record 37 nominations and Emmy for Gossett, but Amos and many of the other Black actors did not see the same boost to their careers.
“The truth is, we did not receive the commensurate job offers,” Amos told TheWrap in 2022. “The inequities that existed in the industry as regards to race still existed, even after ‘Roots,’ because few, if any of us – with the exception of stellar talents like Mr. Gossett and LeVar [Burton]– were able to capitalize on the success of ‘Roots.’ But...

John Amos, the actor whose characters in Good Times, Roots and The Mary Tyler Moore Show lent the 1970s a solid share of its too-few portrayals of strong Black male role models, has died in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 84.

Exclusive: Billy Howle is so at home playing characters wading through pools of anger and angst that he had an “alien feeling” while playing idle rich boy Benji Winbury in Netflix hit The Perfect Couple.
The British actor, almost as a counterpoint to the Nantucket frippery on display in the adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s chart-topping beach read, can now be found on the stage of the prestigious Almeida Theatre in Islington, North London. There he opens tonight, taking on the theatre’s original angry young man, Jimmy Porter, a mammoth career-defining role, in a revival of John Osborne’s 1956 classic Look Back in Anger, which takes place in a dreary attic apartment where Jimmy rails at a society that has become “sick.”
“There’s all this talk about mental health,” says Howle, “and let’s face it, the guy has anger issues. It’s in the title of the play.

Once upon a time, there was a sitcom called "Rhoda." It was a spinoff of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and was an instant smash. How instant? Early in the first season, Rhoda got married, and the episode was watched by over 52 million television viewers. It was the highest-rated episode of television in the 1970s until the premiere of "Roots" in 1977, and served as a bit of a sitcom laboratory for James L. Brooks and Allan Burns. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was groundbreaking in its own right, but, at least early in the series, Brooks and his writers were a little looser on "Rhoda."
One of their most brilliant ideas was to introduce a regular character who is heard but never seen. "The Andy Griffith Show" had done this on occasion with Barney Fife's beloved Juanita Beasley, but "Rhoda" turned the alcoholic Carlton the Doorman into something of a sensation.

Undeniably, the relationship between former sister wives, Christine and Robyn Brown is strained. Notably, Sister Wives star, Robyn is deeply hurt that Christine Brown Woolley doesn’t want to be her friend. Even though Christine has left Kody Brown, Robyn and Christine still have family ties. Are Robyn’s older three kids related to Christine’s kids?
The Brown Family Tree Has Twisted Roots
Without a doubt, the Sister Wives family tree is a bit twisted. While Kody and Robyn Brown have three ex-wives, Meri, Janelle, and Christine Brown, there are still ties. Undoubtedly, the Brown lineage is a tangled mess. Not only did Janelle Brown’s mom marry Kody Brown’s dad, but Janelle’s ex-husband was Meri Brown’s brother, Adam Barber. So Janelle and Kody are now ex-spouses, step-siblings from plural marriage, and ex-brother and sister-in-law. Whew! If that isn’t complicated enough, Christine’s kids and Robyn’s kids are “sibling-cousins.

50 years after its original run, the Norman Lear-produced sitcom "Good Times" is more than just "Dy-no-mite!" It's a spinoff within a spinoff and a classic Black family sitcom that inspired controversy as well as laughter. Like many beloved shows from the '70s, "Good Times" made headlines for behind-the-scenes drama and cast disagreements, but it also captivated audiences.
Originally formulated as a spinoff of "Maude" (which was itself a spinoff of unlikely hit "All in the Family"), "Good Times" retconned its central characters and setting in favor of a new premise. Henry (John Amos) became James, the family got poorer, and the setting switched from New York to Chicago, where it took inspiration from the Cabrini-Green housing projects. Audiences still dug the new show, though by the time it signed off five years later, it had changed entirely: Amos and original star Esther Rolle had left, and the show's most one-dimensional character,...

Stanley Kubrick's 1964 classic "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" remained depressingly relevant. We live on a planet wherein humans have invented single explosive devices powerful enough to eliminate all life on Earth, and yet they are being handled by whiny, insecure, clownish politicians and violence-obsessed military wonks with impotence and delusions of grandeur. It's telling that one of the biggest hits of 2023, Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," was also about how petty egos tend to take precedence over the profound immoral invention of the nuclear bomb.
1964 was a time when phrases like "balance of power" were bandied about in the news, all while politicians and pundits argued about the moral righteousness of every major global superpower possessing the ability to destroy the world with equal skill. If everyone on Earth can blow up the planet, surely, then, everything is in perfect balance.

For 10 seasons and 106 episodes, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has been helping people explore their family history on “Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates, Jr.,” the PBS series that has delved into the often tangled family trees of almost 250 people. The program is the only PBS series to have experienced a growth in linear ratings over the last three years, it’s the network’s top-rated regularly scheduled program — and now, for Season 10, it is finally an Emmy nominee in the Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special category.
“I am deeply humbled by the nomination, and I never dreamed we would get it,” said Gates, a Harvard professor of African American Studies who co-created the show and has hosted it for its entire run. He got the news in a hotel room in Las Vegas, where he’d gone to receive the Spingarn Medal, the NAACP’s highest honor for achievements by Black Americans.

Exclusive: The Wolper Organization, the company behind the iconic Roots miniseries, is staying in business with Warner Bros. Television Group.
The two companies have renewed their overall deal, meaning that the company will have been in business with the studio for more than 50 years. It marks one of the longest consecutive studio deals in entertainment history.
The multiyear pact will see The Wolper Organization continue to develop and produce television series exclusively for the TV group, alongside its first-look feature deal with the movie studio.
Warner Bros. started working with The Wolper Organization, then run by David L. Wolper, in 1976 after Warner Communications bought it for $1.5M. It is behind three of the most successful limited series of all time: Roots, The Thorn Birds and North and South, was first to bring DC’s Superman franchise to TV and introduced viewers to the likes of Jacques Cousteau and Jane Goodall.

Sci-fi legend Jack Arnold directed a majority of "Gilligan's Island," with plenty of prolific names like John Rich, Leslie Goodwins, and even "Superman" director Richard Donner all steering multiple episodes.
The origin of "Gilligan's Island" is a fascinating story already, with creator Sherwood Schwartz allegedly singing the theme song to a gas station attendant to see if the show sounded like something the average person would watch, but just as interesting is how groundbreaking the show was behind the camera.
Namely, by inviting decorated actress and history-making director Ida Lupino to helm a few episodes.
Although Rod Amateau is credited as directing the pilot for the series, CBS comedy show supervisor Sol Saks was quoted as claiming in William Donati's "Ida Lupino: A Biography," that Lupino had been brought in to help shape a struggling show. "It was 'Gilligan's Island,'" Saks said. "It wasn't even on the air yet.

LeVar Burton is best known for his role in the global phenomenon Star Trek: The Next Generation. Sharing screen space with actors like Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner, Burton played the role of the chief engineer Geordie La Forge. The show was the beginning of a long-standing relationship with the franchise which has lasted decades.
While Burton starred in the spinoff show, he was reportedly a huge Trekkie and worshipped creator Gene Roddenberry for depicting a hopeful future. Hence, when he was selected to play the role, he had only one question before signing the contract which involved Roddenberry.

Charles Cyphers, who played Sheriff Leigh Brackett opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in three Halloween movies, performances that spanned a remarkable 43 years, has died. He was 85.
Cyphers died Sunday in Tucson, Arizona, after a brief illness, his manager, Chris Roe, announced.
“Charles was an incredibly lovable and sensitive man,” Roe said in a statement. “He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you them. He was a close friend and client for over 20 years.”
In addition to Halloween (1978), Cyphers appeared in five other projects from writer-director John Carpenter: Assault on Precinct 13 (1976); the 1978 and 1979 telefilms Somebody’s Watching Me! and Elvis; The Fog (1980) and Escape From New York (1981).
“He was an early and frequent collaborator with me on my early movies,” Carpenter wrote on Twitter. “A kind man, he was a friend. I shall miss him.”

Over the course of a screen acting career that stretched across fifty years, Charles Cyphers racked up 100 credits, but he’s best known for his collaborations with John Carpenter, having appeared in the director’s Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, Someone’s Watching Me!, Elvis, The Fog, and Escape from New York. His most popular character was Sheriff Leigh Brackett from the 1978 Halloween, a role he reprised in 1981’s Halloween II and, after a forty year absence from the Halloween franchise, 2021’s Halloween Kills. Sadly, we’ve lost this great character actor, as Variety reports that Cyphers has passed away “from a brief illness” at the age of 85.
Cyphers’ manager Chris Roe confirmed his passing to Variety and provided the following statement: “Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and...
