Jason Statham in The Beekeeper (2024)
The Florist | Dennis Quaid and Jean Reno join the occupation-based action genre
Jason Statham in The Beekeeper (2024)
Following The Beekeeper, The Bricklayer and more, Dennis Quaid and Jean Reno are to star in the occupation-based action flick, The Florist.

Have you ever wanted to see Dennis Quaid repeatedly hit a man in the face with a bunch of daffodils? If so, there’s potentially good news on the horizon. The Jaws 3 star has teamed up with Leon and Godzilla actor Jean Reno for an action thriller called The Florist.

Directed by London Has Fallen's Babak Najafi, The Florist recently wrapped filming, and, according to Deadline, its protagonist is a chap named Carl Rikker (Quaid), an “introverted, quiet horticulturalist” who’s also an assassin. Trouble beckons when he “forms an unlikely friendship with a teenage girl.”

Quaid is therefore set to join Jason Statham, Aaron Eckhart, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ben Affleck in a growing phenomenon we’ve previously dubbed the occupation-based action genre. The success of John Wick in 2014 has,...

Quentin Tarantino Revealed His Favorite Movie—And It’s Not Kill Bill or Reservoir Dogs! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most influential Hollywood filmmakers who has never exactly played by the rules. Whether it’s his quintessential visual style, stylized violence, or bold storytelling, Tarantino’s movies have always stood apart from the rest. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker was once asked to name his all-time favorite films, and his reply included films like Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, and Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. But these were his favorite films directed by other filmmakers.

Quentin Tarantino’s Favorite Film Directed By Him

When Quentin Tarantino was asked to pick his favorite movie from his directorial filmography, the reply was prompt and surprised many fans. In an earlier interview with Howard Stern, the host quizzed Tarantino about the...

Martin Scorsese’s Chilling ‘Taxi Driver’ Scene Was Legendary, but It Originated From a Creepy Accident
Image
Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver is a near-perfect movie, and etched into the cinematic history for the way it portrays urban alienation and the fractured psyche of Robert De Niro’s Travis Bickle. While the actor was the heart of the project, Scorsese was the one who guided it to greatness.

Moreover, the director also had a cameo in the movie, but what many might not know is that his appearance wasn’t a part of the plan. So, let’s dive into how this scene originated and became one of the most memorable moments in Taxi Driver.

You might have noticed Martin Scorsese portraying a random man who is sitting outside the Palantine campaign headquarters in Taxi Driver. He watched the city as the characters passed by, but there was another appearance he...

15 Most Iconic Jackets in Movie History: From Mrs. Robinson to Indiana Jones
Image
It’s interesting to think about some things that remain prescient in the public consciousness, especially regarding cinema. Some films become a part of a greater canon of pop-culture history, while others fade into obscurity.

On another level, the costumes and clothing that certain characters wear in legendary films can take on an iconic life of their own, a testament to the level of detail that the wardrobe supervisors of Hollywood hold themselves to.

Posterized May 2025: Vulcanizadora, Sister Midnight, The Kingdom & More

Another month means another IP deluge. MCU. Karate Kid. Mission: Impossible. Final Destination. Even A Simple Favor. It just goes to show how many films get released every year that I can now pretty much ignore all the Hollywood Photoshop jobs and still be able to populate the below article without any trouble.

While they all worry about scheduling conflicts on the nation’s finite number of IMAX screens, we’re focusing on the bespoke poster art that seeks to catch those blockbuster patrons’ eyes and cajole them into a return visit for the road less-traveled.

Portraiture

A surefire way to stand apart: illustration. You can still be glossy and photo realistic, but a little character with a personal touch goes a long way.

That’s what Mocean delivers with The Surfer (May 2). It’s still just Nicolas Cage front and center, but the artistic style of his painted portrait...

Martin Scorsese’s Ultimate Obsession With Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo – A Film He Keeps Revisiting
Image
Martin Scorsese’s Favourite Alfred Hitchcock Film(Photo Credit –Wikimedia)

It’s no shock that Martin Scorsese holds deep admiration for Alfred Hitchcock, a classic example of one master of the craft recognizing another. But what’s curious isn’t the respect itself, it’s how seldom that admiration bleeds directly into Scorsese’s work. His cinematic universe isn’t exactly littered with overt Hitchcockian fingerprints.

Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese: Two Paths Through the Labyrinth

Alfred Hitchcock’s playground was a twisted hall of mirrors, full of psychological games and taut. His characters were often pawns in elaborate cat-and-mouse setups, where every step had weight and every glance carried secrets. That kind of mechanical precision and manipulation of tension isn’t something Scorsese regularly leaned into. His thrillers, as visceral and unforgettable as they are, don’t quite orbit the same planet as Hitchcock’s finely tuned fear factories.

Is ‘The Studio’ Fun but Shallow? No, Seth Rogen’s Series Is Addictive Because It Gets to the Heart of the New Entertainment Malaise
Image
When a satire of the movie industry takes a big swing, it can succeed only if it connects in a piercingly funny and bold way. It has to offer us an eye-opening new take on how Hollywood works. And that’s the bar “The Studio” has set for itself. I think Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Apple TV+ series about the inner workings of a contemporary movie studio triumphantly clears that bar. “The Studio” isn’t just addictively entertaining — it’s wickedly perceptive. It has a bead on the film business today like nothing you’ve seen. Yet the series, which just aired its sixth episode (there are four more to go), has come in for some dismissals. That’s partly because of its in-your-face style, which some find obnoxious.

Yet it’s also because there are viewers who look at the show and see something broad and derivative rather than new and insightful.

When Naseeruddin Shah Took A Dig At Robert De Niro’s Prep Work For This Cult Classic Film
Image
Naseeruddin Shah And Robert De Niro(Photo Credit –Wikimedia)

Naseeruddin Shah is a seasoned actor who has created a huge impact with his sublime performances among cinephiles, not just in India but across the world. The 74-year-old actor has displayed his acting prowess in myriad films, including Sparsh, Iqbal, Masoon, Katha, Sarfarosh, and Mirch Masala.

In an earlier interview with Hindustan Times, the National Film Award-winning actor was once asked about method acting and a film where he was crazily involved with a character he had essayed, which was hard to get out of. And, like always, he mingled no words to express his blunt opinion. That’s when he candidly remarked about an immensely popular role played by the legendary Hollywood actor Robert De Niro.

What Was That Robert De Niro Movie and Role?

The film’s name was Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, which released in 1976 and eventually...

Something Is About to Happen Review: A Taxi Ride into Transformation
Image
Something Is About to Happen finds Antonio Méndez Esparza returning to his native Spain after a career in U.S. indie cinema to bring Juan José Millás’s novel Que Nadie Duerma vividly to life. At its center is Lucía (Malena Alterio), a forty‑year‑old It support worker whose world collapses when corporate fraud costs her job—and, with it, the stability she thought she’d earned. In a restless act of self‑reinvention, she trades cubicles for the driver’s seat of a Madrid taxi, traversing both the city’s neon‑lit boulevards and its quieter, neglected edges.

Alterio’s performance anchors this transformation, shifting from subdued caretaker to audacious night‑owl with just a glance or a tightened jaw. The film weaves dark comedy and social satire into episodic vignettes—passengers become character studies, each ride revealing a facet of urban alienation or defiant joy.

Adam McKay
Friendship (2025) Movie Review: An Endurance Test of Comedy That Is Hilarious, Yet Existential
Adam McKay
It’s no secret that Hollywood has been somewhat reluctant to dump resources into comedies that do not have a definitive genre slant, as these projects were among the first to be sent directly to streaming services during the fluctuation of distribution methods. Despite the emergence of more unique, diverse comedic voices than ever before in the history of cinema, a straightforward comedy isn’t enough to solidify a theatrical release; those coveted spots are typically reserved for films that appear to be definitely “cinematic” due to some moment of spectacle. While the time may have passed in which defining 21st-century comedic filmmakers like Adam McKay, the Farrelly brothers, David Gordon Green, or Paul Feig could generate buzz based solely on their name, it has encouraged the next generation of humorists to embrace their idiosyncrasies in hopes of standing out.

There’s no other way to describe the style of...

Robert Snow, Secret Service Agent Turned ‘In the Line of Fire’ Adviser, Dies at 93
Image
Robert Snow, a veteran Secret Service agent who served as a technical adviser on films including In the Line of Fire, The American President and Air Force One, died March 22, his family announced. He was 93.

Snow had retired after spending 33 years with the Secret Service when he was called on for his expertise during the making of Wolfgang Petersen’s In the Line of Fire (1993), starring Clint Eastwood as a CIA agent haunted by the JFK assassination.

“In Taxi Driver and other films, we were portrayed as monosyllabic idiots who can’t complete a full sentence and [only] stand on the corners with dark glasses,” Snow told the Chicago Tribune in a 1997 interview. “Until In the Line of Fire, there was nothing to show what the Secret Service really did.”

He worked with Petersen and Eastwood again in the 1997 films Air Force One and Absolute Power, respectively, and on two X-Men movies,...

15 Best Movies Without An Oscar
Image
The Academy Awards are an odd tradition. Every year, voters from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (becoming one of these voters is itself a somewhat mystified bureaucratic nightmare) nominate and award feature films in a number of categories.

Even ignoring the flaws in the process -- such as potential mis-categorization (see co-leads Zoe Saldaña and Kieran Culkin breezing their way to Oscar wins by competing as "supporting actors") -- the prestige and preeminence of the Oscars gives way to a false air of objectivity regarding its honorees. It creates the illusion that winning films are inarguably the best, rather than the beneficiaries of the aggregation of the subjective opinions of a relatively small and unavoidably biased stable of Hollywood elites.

This is all to say, while the Academy Awards are a lot of fun, they are simply unable to honor every film that deserves an award. Below,...

It features De Niro as Jake Lamotta, a volatile boxer, and the director pushes this character’s arc to his creative and emotional limits. To the point that he was almost uncertain about his future in filmmaking.

Marvin Levy, Steven Spielberg’s Publicist and an Oscar Recipient, Dies at 96
Image
Marvin Levy, who spent five-plus decades handling public relations for Steven Spielberg and his films en route to becoming the only publicist to receive an Oscar, died Monday, an Amblin representative announced. He was 96.

Levy worked for MGM in New York and for Columbia Pictures in Hollywood, where he began his relationship with Spielberg on Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). The soft-spoken executive became a “Spielberg Whisperer,” offering counsel to the filmmaker.

In introducing Levy at the Governors Awards in November 2018, Tom Hanks noted that the publicist also advised Spielberg on films including E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), best picture winner Schindler’s List (1993), Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Lincoln (2012).

“Now, all those movies are pretty damn good, but I don’t think any of us in this room would have bothered seeing them without the efforts of Marvin Levy,” a cheeky Hanks said before the publicist came to the stage to accept his Oscar.

'Taxi Driver' Writer Paul Schrader Denies Sexual Assault Allegations
Image
Famed Hollywood screenwriter and director Paul Schrader has decided to issue a statement following the sexual assault accusations that his former assistant made against him a few days ago. Although his legal team has already responded to the allegations, Schrader himself has decided to address the accusations that he vehemently denies: "I have nothing to hide about my conduct."

Per a report by Variety, the Taxi Driver writer has released a formal statement in which he addresses the allegations made by his former assistant, whom he refers to as "plaintiff," whereas all legal filings refer to her as Jane Doe. The lawsuit in which Schrader was accused of sexual misconduct indicates that he "exposed himself" to her, and between 2021 and 2024, she was the subject of a "sexually hostile, intimidating, and humiliating environment." Although the legal proceedings were about to be settled out of court, Schrader backed off. Instead, he has...

Paul Schrader Responds to Sexual Assault Allegation in Open Letter: ‘I Have Nothing to Hide About My Conduct’
Image
Paul Schrader has written a letter to his friends and associates responding to sexual assault allegations posed by his 26-year-old former assistant, claiming her accusations couldn’t be “further from the truth.”

On April 3, Schrader’s former assistant, identified as Jane Doe, alleged in a legal filing that the “Taxi Driver” screenwriter had sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions. One alleged incident occurred shortly after last year’s “Oh, Canada” premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where she claims Schrader exposed his penis to her in his hotel room. She also claimed that Schrader’s lawyer agreed on a monetary settlement after the alleged abuse, but after some “soul searching,” he pulled out of the deal. The Jane Doe’s lawyers then filed a motion in New York state court to enforce the settlement and recoup litigation expenses.

Schrader has since responded to the claims in a letter sent Monday.

Paul Schrader Details Kissing Former Assistant in Letter Addressing Sexual Harassment Lawsuit: ‘I Have Nothing to Hide’

Paul Schrader continued mounting his defense Monday against a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by his former assistant last week, detailing in a written appeal to friends and family two instances where he kissed the young woman on the mouth.

He maintained that they “never had sex in any form” and that he never exposed himself to her in a Cannes hotel room, as she claimed in her Thursday filing.

“I have nothing to hide about my conduct — and that includes my decision not to yield to the pressure of my former assistant’s threat to make her sensational allegations public, a threat that she and her lawyers have now executed,” Schrader wrote in the letter, obtained and reviewed by TheWrap. “If this case ever makes it to trial, I will be honest with the judge and jury who I am confident will see the truth.”

Robert De Niro will be honored at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with an honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement. He will receive this award at the opening ceremony of the 78th festival 14 years after he presided over the jury in 2011. The ceremony will be held on May 13, 2025. De Niro started his career with a young Brian De Palma on early gems “Greetings,” “The Wedding Party” and “Hi, Mom!” (He would reunite with De Palma years later on “The Untouchables”). In 1973, he would star in Martin Scorsese’s “Mean Streets,” which would start...

Robert De Niro to Receive Honorary Palme d’Or at 2025 Cannes Film Festival
Image
Robert De Niro will be honored with an honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement at the opening ceremony of the 78th Festival de Cannes, the festival announced Monday.

De Niro will be honored on May 13, marking 14 years after the two-time Oscar-winning served as President of the Cannes jury in 2011.

De Niro has a long history with Cannes. In 1976, he appeared in two films in the festival’s official selection: Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1900 and Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, with the latter winning the Palme d’Or. In 1983, he opened the festival with Scorsese’s The King of Comedy, following up a year later with Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America. In 1986 he was back with Roland Joffé’s The Mission, the second De Niro film to win a Palme d’Or. More recently, in 2023, he was back on the Croisette with Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

Paul Schrader has been accused of sexual harassment and sexual assault by a former assistant who also alleges that the screenwriter-director reneged on a settlement that was agreed upon by both parties.

In a legal filing for the Jane Doe accuser first obtained by Variety, the plaintiff claims Schrader sexually assaulted her in May 2024 when the defendant’s film Oh, Canada premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

‘Taxi Driver’ Writer Paul Schrader Accused of Sexual Assault
Image
Paul Schrader became known for being behind some of the greatest movies of all time, including Robert De Niro's Taxi Driver, but like so many others, his legacy is now set to be remembered for something other than his impressive body of work. According to The Independent, a 26-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit against Schrader, alleging that the filmmaker "exposed himself" to her, and subjected her to a "sexually hostile, intimidating, and humiliating environment" when she worked with him between 2021 and 2024.

The woman, known only as Jane Doe in documents, accused Schrader of "luring her into a hotel room" and "forcibly grabbing her and kissing her, despite verbal protests." The incident was reported to have taken place when Schrader was showing the premiere of his movie Oh, Canada at the Cannes Film Festival.

In the lawsuit, the accuser says that after that incident, she returned to Schrader’s hotel room three days later,...

The UK title adds that these allegations, the subject of a lawsuit filed in civil court by the unnamed woman (“Jane Doe”), came to light after Schrader reneged on a confidential settlement previously agreed and the complainant filed a new affadavit in New York State Supreme Court.

AP News reports that the complainant is seeking a judge’s order to enforce the agreement after Schrader said he couldn’t go through with it. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Deadline received a statement from the complainant’s legal representatives, Outten and Golden, saying:

“As stated in our motion, Ms. Doe is simply seeking to enforce the settlement agreement between the parties resolving her sexual harassment and sexual assault claims.

Paul Schrader, the screenwriter of “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” has been accused in a legal filing of sexually harassing his former assistant, and of backing out of an agreement to pay her a settlement.

The 26-year-old woman, identified only as Jane Doe, alleges that Schrader grabbed her and kissed her against her will while they were at the Cannes Film Festival last year for the premiere of his latest film, “Oh, Canada.” She protested and was able to free herself and flee the room, she alleges.

Three days later, she alleges that Schrader, 78, summoned her to his hotel room, claiming that he was “dying,” and then exposed his penis to her.

The woman’s attorneys allege that Schrader’s lawyers agreed to a monetary settlement, but that after some “soul searching” he backed out of the deal. They filed a motion in state court in New York to enforce the terms of the agreement,...

The time The Criterion Collection released Kindergarten Cop… sort of
Image
It’s not a tumor! More than a decade ago, The Criterion Collection included 1990’s Kindergarten Cop. Of course, since it was clearly an April Fool’s Day prank, Ivan Reitman’s movie would never make it to the beloved boutique label. But that doesn’t mean Criterion didn’t put all their efforts into their faux release.

For starters, it had absolutely killer cover art featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger in drawing form, complete with a childish coloring job. Flip over to the back of the box and you’d find a truly ingenious write-up that positioned Kindergarten Cop as far more complex than original audiences thought:

“Historically, the policier and the family comedy were two distinct categories. Then, in 1990, Kindergarten Cop gave us all a lesson in genre revisionism. With muscular sensitivity, Hollywood’s last action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger embodies detective John Kimble, who is compelled to go undercover as...

Jodie Foster Played Three Different Gunsmoke Characters Before Her Rise To Fame
Image
It's not uncommon for aspiring actors to start young, but there wasn't any time wasted when it came to queer icon Jodie Foster. She started in commercials as young as three and made her television debut as early as six in an episode of "Mayberry R.F.D." Long before she played the vulnerable defendant in "The Accused" or faced off against Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs," the child prodigy slowly made her way into film with roles in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and "Freaky Friday." By the time she was 12, Foster was not only working on her second Martin Scorsese picture with "Taxi Driver," but it was also the role that led her first of five Oscar nominations — and two wins.

In the interim before her big breaks, however, Foster was kept super busy when it came to guest appearances on a plethora of television shows. She...

Was Robert De Niro’s Legendary Taxi Driver Line Never In the Script?
Image
Was Robert De Niro’s famous “Are you talkin’ to me?” line from Taxi Driver improvised?(Photo Credit –Facebook)

It was during the gritty, neon-lit haze of 1976, when Martin Scorsese dropped a film that would etch itself into cinematic history for decades to come. His cinematic masterpiece ‘Taxi Driver’ provided a glimpse of a dark, feverish descent into urban alienation, and introduced audiences to Travis Bickle, an ex-marine and Vietnam veteran, working as a taxi-driving insomniac whose paranoia and disdain for the city’s decay simmered into something unforgettable.

And, of course, no moment in the film resonates quite like that scene – the mirror, the gun, and the line that would cement itself in pop culture forever, “Are you talkin’ to me?”

The iconic line wasn’t just another scripted monologue. In fact it was pure, unfiltered Robert De Niro and furthermore, it was improvised, raw, and eerily perfect, that...

Did a Race Swap Save 'Taxi Driver' or Undermine It?
Image
Warning: The following article contains extensive spoilers for the 1976 film Taxi Driver.Universally praised in 1976, Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver is a nightmarish glimpse into post-Vietnam America without clear-cut heroes or villains. Unbeknownst to fans at the time, this film went through a radical rewrite, changing the race of one of the most crucial characters in the film. The race-swap is something that has come up in conversation; Quentin Tarantino notably second-guesses the decision as a clumsy compromise forced upon the film by filmmakers who lost their nerve.

Starring Robert De Niro — with Cybil Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, and Jodie Foster in critical supporting roles — the neo-noir was allegedly so controversial that it narrowly avoided an X-rating. It could have been worse. Roaming the urban decay is Travis Bickle, a cabbie picking up the city's "animals" by night, an alienated Vietnam veteran spiraling into a grimy, urban abyss. Preparing a war against no one in particular,...

“It was really scary”: How Did Seth Rogen Convince Martin Scorsese to Make a Cameo In ‘The Studio’?
Image
Imagine pitching a movie so absurd that even Hollywood’s wildest execs would raise an eyebrow. Now, imagine trying to rope in Martin Scorsese, yes, that Martin Scorsese, to make an appearance in a comedy about making that movie. Sounds impossible, right?

Well, welcome to Seth Rogen’s world, where the unexpected is just another Tuesday. Apple TV+’s latest comedy, The Studio, throws audiences into the chaotic world of Hollywood filmmaking, where bad ideas sometimes lead to billion-dollar blockbusters. And who better to navigate this madness than Seth Rogen, a man whose entire career is built on turning ridiculous premises into gold?

A still from The Studio | Credits: Apple TV+

But while Rogen has played plenty of over-the-top characters, his latest role as Matt Remick, a studio executive trying to fast-track a Kool-Aid movie, might just be his most outrageous yet. But the real magic trick? Convincing Martin Scorsese to play along.

Forgotten Movies That Made History
Image
As they get more expensive, widely seen and complicatedly filmed, movie milestones are getting hit all the time. Usually, they’re the movies you’d expect: the blockbusters that sweep all the awards and land on top 10 lists for years to come. Sometimes, though, a little nothing movie can show up, make history and leave before anyone notices.

5 Rock & Rule

1983’s Rock & Rule was notable for two things: 1) somehow snagging voice talents like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Debbie Harry; and 2) having suspiciously good animation for a low-budget Canadian cartoon. In fact, the tale of nuclear rat-like creatures using rock music to summon the forces of evil was the first animated movie to use CGI. Unfortunately, none of that helped it to recoup even a fraction of its budget at the box office.

By 2004, we had an entire Lord of the Rings series, so it’s...

Mark Cousins says ChatGPT scraped “exact summary” of his own book while researching next film

Mark Cousins says ChatGPT presented him with an “exact summary” of a book he wrote almost 30 years ago, when he was researching his new film Story Of Documentary Film.

The Northern Irish filmmaker was speaking in a ‘A Morning With’ conversation at Cph:dox, with Toronto film festival documentary programmer Thom Powers.

“When I started this project, I asked ChatGPT, ‘What is the history of documentary?’” said Cousins, in response to a question about his thoughts on AI technologies. “If it can do it, I don’t need to,” joked the director.

“You know what it did? It was an exact...

Sylvester Stallone Called This Comedy The Worst Movie In His Filmography
Image
If you've paid any kind of attention to Sylvester Stallone's film career for any amount of time, you know he's made some absolutely terrible movies. To be fair, some were out of necessity. Prior to becoming a big screen superstar in 1976 with "Rocky," a briefly homeless Stallone starred in a quickie pornographic romance called "The Party at Kitty and Stud's" (which was rereleased post-stardom as "The Italian Stallion"). Around the same time, he also appeared in the low-budget terrorism thriller "No Place to Hide," which was recut as a comedy and dumped into video stores in 1990 with the title "A Man Called... Rainbo."

For the most part, however, Stallone has been the author of his own cinematic misery. After the wild critical and commercial success of "Rocky", the star went on a decade-plus tear during which he could get anything greenlit. At first, he put his newfound box office...

Robert De Niro’s 10 Best Performances: ‘Taxi Driver,’ ‘Raging Bull,’ and More
Image
It can be difficult sometimes to fully appreciate the fact that we still have a legend like Robert De Niro still with us. Part of it is that De Niro has been a constant for decades now, almost as long as our Modern Hollywood has existed: breaking out as the chief collaborator and muse of Martin Scorsese in the early ’70s with performances in “Mean Streets” and “Taxi Driver,” the two-time Oscar winner personified the grit and edge of the New Hollywood revolution, and remained a vibrant force on film through the ’80s and ’90s.

That said, not every film that De Niro stars in is a hit, and not every performance he gives is up to the standards he’s often set for himself. Especially in his later years, De Niro has a reputation for sometimes coasting, particularly in films that don’t exactly measure up to the classics...

Which Actor Has Worked With Martin Scorsese the Most?
Image
There exists a laundry list of great performers who have worked with Martin Scorsese as he emerged from New Hollywood. But none more frequently, effectively, or memorably than Robert De Niro. While Scorsese has built a strong relationship with several actors, specifically Leonardo Di Caprio in recent years, De Niro is still most closely tied to the American filmmaker, with ten collaborations together.

Among Scorsese’s other frequent collaborators is Catherine Scorsese (7 films), the director’s mother, who often appeared in small roles and famously cooked for cast and crew. Leonardo DiCaprio (6 films) has been Scorsese’s go-to lead since 2002, starring in films like The Wolf of Wall Street and The Departed. Harvey Keitel has also been a mainstay (6 films) and played key roles in the filmmaker’s early works like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, later returning for The Irishman.

Martin Scorsese (M), Robert De Niro (L), and Harvey...

The Cinematography of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Crafts a Hell’s Kitchen for Both the ‘70s and Today
Image
Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) may be barely holding it together as chaos swirls around him — and as the forces that want to tear down New York City also menace his allegedly reformed antagonist Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) — but the world of “Daredevil” looks as rich as it ever has in its newest iteration, “Daredevil: Born Again.”

Director of Photography Hillary Fyfe Spera, who shot seven out of nine episodes for the series, and cinematographer Pedro Gómez Millán, who shot Episodes 4 and 5, have both embraced the mission of giving Murdock’s New York a kind of dirtbag romance — visually speaking, at least — in the grand tradition of beautifully grimy films like “Taxi Driver” and “The French Connection.”

The challenge was crafting a cinematic grammar where that vision of Hell’s Kitchen can co-exist with Matt’s sensory abilities as Daredevil, his personal church that is the courtroom, Fisk’s adventures in mayoral politics,...
